Charles Rettinger Sr.

Charles E. Rettinger Sr., 48, of McDonald, died Saturday, January 31, 1998, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Mt. Lebanon. He was born April 4, 1949, in Washington, a son of Margaret A. Wilson Rettinger of McDonald and the late Edward J. Rettinger. Mr. Rettinger was a 1967 graduate of Fort Cherry High School. Following high school, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam. For the last 20 years, he worked as a coal miner. He currently was employed by Cyprus Amax Minerals Company in Kirby. Mr. Rettinger was a member of the Calvary Presbyterian Church of McDonald. He was the commander of the McDonald American Legion Post 485 of McDonald and was a past second vice president of the McDonald Lions Club. He was involved in forming the Fort Cherry Youth Wrestling program and was also an Area One chairman of youth wrestling and the president of the Waynesburg Wrestling Association. He also was a coach of the Hickory Vikings midget football team. On August 18, 1967, he married Lura Jean Burkett Rettinger, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles E. Rettinger Jr. and Michael E. Rettinger, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, Edward David Rettinger of North Kingsville, Ohio, and William J. Rettinger of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; five sisters, Mary Ann Barnes of Greensboro, N.C., Dona L. Miller of Sykesville, Md., Peggy Dalla Piazza of McDonald, Kathy McCombs of Dubois and Gayle A. Sweetie of Burlington, N.C.; one grandson, Zackery Michael Rettinger; also 27 nieces and nephews and 27 great-nieces and great-nephews.

Joan D. Bridges

Joan D. Bridges, 61, of Maple Terrace View, Washington, died Friday, February 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born September 2, 1936, in Burgettstown, a daughter of Frank Fossie Sr. of Secane and the late Rosella Patterson. Mrs. Bridges was a factory worker for a shoe factory in New Hampshire until her retirement in 1968. She attended Trinity High School and was a member of The Lords Church of Washington. She enjoyed puzzles, crocheting and singing in the church choir. Surviving, in addition to her father, are a son, Nathaniel "Butch" Bridges of Washington; three daughters, Doris Ann Bridges of Saginaw, Mich., Joan D. Hudson of Pittsburgh and Falisha K. Bridges of Washington; a brother, Alvin Wilkerson of Atlanta, Ga.; three sisters, Sandra Trent of Pittsburgh, Vanzela Smith and Virginia Dockery, both of Washington; three grandchildren, Dana Wilson, Jessica Bridges and Nathaniel Bridges; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Elizabeth Briscoe; and a brother, Ronnie Fossie.

Catherine J. Capo

Catherine Jane Capozzoli Capo, 76, of Wolf Avenue, Washington, died at 9:11 a.m. Friday, February 20, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born January 25, 1922, in Lincoln Hill, a daughter of George Roscoe and Minnie Rachel Paul Burgh. Mrs. Capo attended Friendship Community Church and did volunteer work with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Brownies as a leader for many years. She attended Washington High School and owned and operated Ramsey Photo Studio in Washington. On April 26, 1940, she married Patsy Capo, who died January 4, 1993. Surviving are two sons, Patsy L. and John E. Capo, both of Washington; a daughter, Sandra Kay Capo Smith of West Brownsville; a brother, Robert Burgh of Washington; six grandchildren, Charity Smith and Melissa, Kristy, John, Patsy A. and Jillian Capo; and two great-grandsons. Deceased are a son, Randy Capo; a daughter, Joyce Blaisdell; two sisters, Dorothy Rumbaugh and Helen Groves; three brothers, Albert, Tawrence and Richard Burgh; a granddaughter, Paige Smith; and her stepmother, Blanche McFall Burgh.

Guy V. Courtwright
Louisiana resident formerly of Greene County
Guy Vernon Courtwright, 62, of Elm Grove, La., died Wednesday, February 18, 1998, in a Shreveport, La., hospital following a brief illness. He was born September 3, 1935, in Aleppo Township, a son of the late Ray and Letha Hartley Courtwright. Mr. Courtwright lived his early life in Greene County and had resided for the past 13 years in Louisiana. He was employed as a construction worker, truck driver, steel mill worker in Ohio and other areas. On November 14, 1985, in Louisiana, he married Doris Carter, who survives. Also surviving are seven children from a previous marriage; two brothers, Donald Courtwright of Sebring, Ohio, and Mack Courtwright of Cleveland, Ohio; four sisters, Gerry Schaefer of Chambersburg, Sadie Marshall and Betty Lou Marshall of Alliance, Ohio, and Suann Doutt of Waynesburg. Deceased, in addition to his parents, are a brother, James; and a sister, Virginia. A memorial service will be held Saturday morning in Louisiana. James S. Dispenza

Word has been received of the death of James S. Dispenza, 94, of Falconer, N.Y., who died Saturday, February 14, 1998, in WCA Hospital, Falconer. He was born December 25, 1903, in Sicily, a son of Joseph and Rosalie Piazza Dispenza. Mr. Dispenza came to the United States in 1905, settling in Falconer, where he attended the local schools. He worked for 42 years at the Malleable Iron Works, retiring in 1971. Surviving are two sons, Joseph Dispenza of Falconer and Robert Dispenza of North Tonawanda, N.Y.; two daughters, Rosalie Frodelius of Waynesburg and Teresa Alessi of Redmond, Wash.; nine grandchildren, Debra Odle of Apache Junction, Ariz., Amy Bellardo and Jean Wilson, both of Jamestown, N.Y., Kimberly Dispenza of Kenmore, N.Y., Tom Alessi and Michele Walker, both of Graham, Wash., Jeff Alessi of Redmond, Wash., Bob Dispenza and Grant Frodelius Jr., both of Waynesburg; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Dispenza of Falconer; and three sisters, Sarah Mistretta of Glendora, Calif., Ann Catania of Jamestown and Laura Page of Falconer. Deceased are his wife, Catherine M. Gerardi Dispenza, who he married November 23, 1939, in Warren, N.Y., and who died November 1, 1976; two brothers, Joseph and Charles Dispenza; and a sister, Beatrice L. Dispenza.

Sally Fiala

Sally Fiala, 59, of Greensboro R.D.1 (Cabbage Flats), died unexpectedly at 8:20 p.m. Thursday, February 19, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born December 25, 1938, in Mapletown, a daughter of Coleman Brumley of Greensboro and the late Hilda Henrietta Haney Brumley. Mrs. Fiala lived all her life in Greensboro, where she worked as a cashier at the Grocery Bag for about nine years. She was also an Avon salesperson. On June 8, 1957, she married Paul A. Fiala, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Paul C. Fiala of Carmichaels and Bruce A. Fiala of Lake Worth, Fla.; a brother, Ronald F. Brumley of Greensboro R.D.1; a sister, Lucy L. Brumley of Greensboro; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to her mother, is a brother, Lewis A. "Skip" Brumley.

Ernestine L. Holmok
Former special education teacher in Monongahela
Ernestine L. "Tennie" Holmok, 80, of South Orange, N.J., formerly of Monongahela, died Thursday, February 19, 1998, in Overlook Hospital, Summit, N.J. She was born March 4, 1917, in Monongahela, a daughter of Andrew and Mary Valo Matuga. Mrs. Holmok was a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange, and a former member of Transfiguration Church, Monongahela. She taught special education and elementary grades in Monongahela School District before moving to South Orange, where she continued teaching special education. Surviving are two daughters, Loretta Holmock of South Orange and Celeste Reardon of Lincoln, N.H.; three grandchildren, Kyle, Hillary and Travis Reardon; two sisters, Ann Cupper of Belle Vernon and Bessie Polaski of Monongahela; Deceased are her husband, William Holmok, who died in 1993; a brother, Joseph Matuga; and a sister, Margaret Kortina.

Elna Johnson, 81, formerly of Daisytown, died at 3 p.m. Friday, February 20, 1998, in Jefferson Hospital of South Hills Health Care System. She was born November 14, 1916, in Daisytown, a daughter of Jack Hill and Lempi Silander Hill. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker. Surviving are a son, Dale R. Johnson of Daisytown; a daughter, Cynthia G. Jones of York, with whom she made her home; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Celia Kokkila of Belle Vernon; Deceased are her husband, Tauno S. Johnson; and a brother, Leo Hill.

Betty Konicki
Former Marianna resident active in library
Betty Konicki, 79, of Monaca, formerly of Marianna, died Friday, February 20, 1998, in Beaver Medical Center. She was born August 2, 1918, in Beallsville, a daughter of C.M. and Sarah Frederick Pitzer. Mrs. Konicki was a homemaker and longtime resident of Marianna, where she was a member of the Christian Women's Club and Women's Card Club and had been active with the Marianna Community Library for many years. She had attended Rochester Methodist Church for the past four years. Mrs. Konicki enjoyed bingo playing and traveling. Surviving are a daughter, Sara Marlene Dmitrzak of Cranberry Township; a sister, Sara Harris of Rochester; three brothers, Thomas Pitzer of Lake Wells, Fla., Milton Pitzer of Eighty Four and Ronald Pitzer of Rochester; a granddaughter, Paula Marlene Sutton; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Andrew J. Konicki, who died August 18, 1982; a brother, Duane Pitzer; and a sister, Elda Guthrie.

Michael M. Popovich
Retired carpenter from Houston
Michael M. Popovich, 85, of North Main Street, Houston, died Friday, February 20, 1998, at home. He was born November 15, 1912, in Filbert, a son of Metro and Mary Huchok Berects. Mr. Popovich was a retired carpenter, working out of Local 2274 of the Carpenters Union Heavy Construction. He was a member of the Houston Independent Club and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army. On January 24, 1948, he married Julia Scarcell, who died August 14, 1997. Surviving are two brothers, George Popovich of Phoenix, Ariz., and Pete Popovich of Washington; two sisters, Elizabeth Jampol and Mary Curtis, both from California state. Deceased are a son, Michael S. Popovich; and three brothers, John, James and Charles Popovich.

Robert Pyzynski
Retired from Corning Glass in Charleroi
Robert Pyzynski, 85, formerly of Charleroi, died Friday, February 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born January 24, 1913, in Poland, a son of Edward and Kazmira Kozloski Pyzynski. Mr. Pyzynski was a member of Mary Mother of the Church Parish, Charleroi, VFW of Charleroi, Corning Retirees and the Polish National Alliance. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired from Corning Glass in 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Crouch of Lorraine, Ohio; three sisters, Genevieve Pressburger of Roscoe, Helen Luckasevic of Charleroi and Eleanor Sable of Charleroi; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Deceased are his wife, Mary B. Gaydos Pyzynski; and a brother, Henry Pyzynski.

Emile C. Stewart
Union construction worker from McDonald
Emile C. Stewart, 77, of McDonald, died Friday, February 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born May 14, 1920, in McDonald, a son of Charles F. and Anne Steinheiser Stewart. Mr. Stewart served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a construction worker with International Union of Operating Engineers, Local Union 66, for 40 years before retiring in 1982. He was a member of Calvary Presbyterian Church, McDonald, and Midway VFW Post. On March 20, 1954, he married Lillian Tornabene, who survives. Also surviving are a brother, Clyde E. Stewart of McDonald; a sister, Alverta Campbell of Clinton; 21 nieces and nephews and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are five brothers, William, John, Charles, George and James Stewart.

Gary Ralph Talbott

Gary Ralph Talbott, 47, of Duluth, Ga., died Tuesday, February 17, 1998. Mr. Talbott, a native of Washington, was a graduate of Kent State University; was manager of McGinnis Farms Inc., Marietta, Ga.; and was a member of Smoke Rise Baptist Church. His father, Ralph Talbott, is deceased. Surviving are his mother, Frances Talbott of Dunwoody, Ga.; his wife, Pam Talbott; a son, Matthew Talbott of Duluth; two daughters, Amee Timmerman and Whitney Talbott, both of Duluth; three brothers, Alan Talbott of Atlanta, Ga., Carl Talbott of Tupelo, Miss., and Mark Talbott of Atlanta; a sister, Suzanne Shafer of Dunwoody; and two grandchildren, Trae and Tyler Timmerman. Services were held February 20 at Smoke Rise Baptist Church, St. Mountain, Ga. Interment in Arlington Memorial Park, Sandy Springs.

Herbert Thompson, 86, of Oakland, Calif., formerly of Canonsburg, died Wednesday, February 18, 1998. Born January 16, 1912, he was a son of Herbert B. and Grace Staley Thompson. Mr. Thompson was a businessman for 38 years in Montclair, Calif. He loved sports and played football at Canonsburg High School. Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Phyllis Jackson Thompson; two sons, Herbert Thompson and Timothy Thompson, both of Northern California; a daughter, Diane Sullivan of Grants Pass, Ore.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Grace Rasel of Ferndale, Mich., and Ruth Lesso of Canonsburg. Deceased are a son, David Thompson; two sisters, Alice Harris and Marion Marchinok; and three brothers, Paul Thompson, Norwood Thompson and Noel Thompson. Burial is in Oakland, Calif. Darrell K. Bolin, 40, of Denbo, died Thursday, February 19, 1998, in McCalester General Hospital, McCalester, Okla. He was born February 13, 1958, in Brownsville, a son of Kenneth and Myrna Knisley Bolin of Denbo. Mr. Bolin was a painter and a member of the Victory Club of Denbo and OH's Pool League, Fredericktown. Surviving are his wife, Thea Bolin; two sons, Darrell John Bolin of Bridgeville and Wayne Goodman of Denbo; a daughter, Taisa Goodman of Denbo; two brothers, Kenneth Bolin of Fredericktown and Randy Bolin of California state; and a sister, Sherry Chamberlain of Vesta No. 7.

Andrew Christy Jr.
Retired miner was decorated WW II veteran
Andrew Christy Jr., 80, of Carmichaels Street, Rices Landing, died unexpectedly Sunday, February 22, 1998, at home. He was born June 28, 1917, in Millsboro, a son of Andrew Sr. and Mary Jane Parrish Christy. Mr. Christy was a member of Hewitt Presbyterian Church of Rices Landing, where he was a former deacon and served on the Board of Session. He was a resident of Rices Landing the past 32 years and a 1935 graduate of East Bethlehem Township High School. Mr. Christy retired in 1979 as a miner with J&L Steel Corp.'s Vesta No. 5 Mine, where he was employed for 39 years. He was a member of UMWA Local 762 of Vestaburg. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He entered in April 24, 1942, and was discharged October 5, 1945. He was wounded in Italy in December 1943, and at Anzio in May 1944, receiving two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, the E.T.O. Medal with six stars, Presidential Citation and Combat Infantry Badge. Mr. Christy was a member of Hanson-Cole American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, Veterans of Foreign War Post of Uniontown and Elks Lodge 7571 of Waynesburg. On June 30, 1966, in Irwin Presbyterian Church, he married Gloria Sharpnack, who survives. Also surviving are a stepson, Richard Nichols of Hawaiian Gardens, Calif.; two grandchildren; a sister; Rhoda Pollock of Fredericktown; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are four sisters, Ida Dorsch, Mabel Teasdale, Bertha Carrick and Gladys Christy; and two brothers, Harry and Edward Christy.

Florence Fair Coburn
Was operating room nurse at Washington Hospital
Florence "Tillie" Fair Coburn, 70, of Ocean City, N.J.,formerly of Washington, died Sunday, February 22, 1998, at her home, following a brief illness. She was born October 15, 1927, in Washington, a daughter of the late Richard S. and Florence Davis Fair. While in Washington, Mrs. Coburn was a member of First Christian Church, and formerly a member of Diciples of Christ Church, Canonsburg. In Ocean City, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Coburn graduated from Washington Seminary in 1945, and from Washington Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. After graduation, she worked as an operating room nurse at Washington Hospital for several years. On August 2, 1952, in Washington, she married Robert T. Coburn Sr., who survives. In 1981, she and her husband started their own business, Coburn-Myers Bolt & Nut Co., in Trainer. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Deborah Pellegrini of Washington; a son, Robert T. Coburn Jr. of Philadelphia; four sisters, Elizabeth Sibert of Washington, Josephine Fields of Coraopolis, Sue Myers of Ocean City and Sally Hobbs of Birmingham, Ala.; three grandchildren, Richard Pellegrini Jr., Michael Pellegrini and Becky Coburn; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased is her sister, Phyllis Hobbs.

Faye M. Conklin
Elder, deacon of West Union Presbyterian Church
Faye McCullough Conklin, 83, of Waynesburg R.D.2, formerly of West Union, died at 12:10 p.m. Monday, February 23, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness. She was born June 28, 1914, in Ninevah, a daughter of Elmas and Mollie Sweeney McCullough. Mrs. Conklin was a homemaker, She was a member of West Union Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder and a member of the Hannah-Lee Circle and was a former deacon and treasurer. On December 28, 1932, she married J. Warren "Tip" Conklin, who died April 3, 1994. Surviving are two daughters, Donna Rose of Washington and Carol Stephenson of Waynesburg; a son, Robert Gene Conklin of Prosperity; 18 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; a brother, Ivan "Rusty" McCullough of Waynesburg; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a great-grandson, Jonathan Conklin; and a brother, Ralph Silas McCullough.

Paul Huber Hill
Was decorated for gallantry by Gen. George S. Patton
Paul Huber Hill, 76, of Hickory, died at 8 a.m. Monday, February 23, 1998, at Allegheny University Hospitals, Canonsburg, following a two-week illness. He was born September 29, 1921, at Gretna, a son of Huber and Anna Mary Briggs Hill. Mr. Hill attended area schools and Penn Tech Institute. He was Protestant and for many years was associated with Atlasburg Church of the Nazarene. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed by Washington Steel, and was a member of Local 7139. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army in the European Theater with Co. E, 301st Infantry Regiment, 94th Infantry Division, with the Third Army. He was personally decorated for gallantry in action by Gen. George S. Patton in Germany, where he was awarded the Silver Star. He participated in four major campaigns and was awarded four Bronze Stars. He received several other medals including the Expert Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion. On September 4 , 1947, he married Dorothy Dagnana, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Alan A. Hill of Canonsburg; a brother, Roy M. Hill of Hickory; a sister, Ora Hughey of Smith Township; and a grandson, Kevin A. Hill. Deceased are two brothers, Harry and Wray Hill; and two sisters, Emma E. Nelson and Ruth Hill.

Mark Paul Kasparek
1996 Blackhawk graduate dies from car accident
Mark Paul Kasparek, 20, of Darlington, died Monday, February 23, 1998, as a result of injuries from a car accident. Mark was born August 30, 1977, in Rochester, a son of Debra Zimmerman Stewart of Beaver and Gerald Kasparek of Elwood City. He was a member of First Church of God, New Brighton, and a 1996 graduate of Blackhawk High School. Surviving in addition to his parents, are his stepfather, William Stewart of Beaver; a sister, Kimberly Fox of Vectorville, Calif.; a brother, E. Christopher Shields of Darlington; a stepbrother, Jeffrey Stewart of New Brighton; great-grandfather, Carl Strawn of Waynesburg; great-grandmother, Margaret Moninger of New Freeport; two aunts and uncles; and a niece. Deceased are his two grandfathers, Paul Zimmerman and Ed Shields; great-grandmother, Edna Strawn; and great-grandfather, Donley Moninger.

Verona K. Large
Private services were held for Verona K. Large, 59, of Forward Township, Monongahela, who died Thursday, February 19, 1998, at Highlands Hospital in Connellsville. She was born June 24, 1938, in Finleyville, a daughter of Anna K. Coon of Finleyville and the late Joseph Huziak. Surviving are her husband, Charles E. Large, with whom she celebrated 42 years of marriage on January 18; two daughters, Lynn Mitchell of Charleroi and Kimberly Barker of Monongahela; a son, Charles J. Large, at home; two grandchildren, Ian and Erica Mitchell; three sisters, Nancy Milligan of Finleyville, Ann Calvert of Waynesburg and Lillian Mastericola of Florida. Anthony A. Lolli
Furniture store employee was musician, entertainer
Anthony A. Lolli, 81, of Waverly, W.Va., died Thursday, February 19, 1998, in St. Joseph Hospital, Parkersburg, W.Va., following a brief illness. He was born in Wayne, a son of Michael and Rosina Umani Lolli. Mr. Lolli graduated from Radnor High School in 1936 and was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving from 1942 until 1945. He was employed by Sears Roebuck Co. in Philadelphia and Pottstown, worked for Levitz Furniture Co. in Wilmington, Del., and Allentown, before returning to the Sears store in Vienna, W.Va. He retired from Value City Furniture Co., formerly Miller Furniture. Mr. Lolli was a lifelong musician and entertainer, playing guitar and bass with groups throughout Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia, and will be long remembered as a humorist, storyteller and writer. Surviving are a son, Steven Lolli or Ormond Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Diane Lolli of Hamden, Conn.; a granddaughter, Tonia Redding of Newark, Del.; and a brother, John Lolli of Boca Raton, Fla. Deceased are his wife, Bethel McCowan Lolli; and a brother, Louis Lolli.

Doris T. McCain
Burgettstown native taught school 33 years
Word has been received of the death of Doris T. McCain, 66, of James Street, Applewood Manor, Dallas, who died Tuesday, February 17, 1998, in Wilkes Barre. Born in Burgettstown, she was a daughter of Helene Ballard Stafford of Dallas and the late C. Warren Tope. Mrs. McCain was a 1949 graduate of Burgettstown High School; attended Carnegie Institute of Technology for one year; and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1953 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education. While at Pitt she was a member of Beta Sigma Omicron Sorority. Before retiring, Mrs. McCain was employed as an elementary school teacher by the Dallas School District from 1965 until 1986. From 1953 until 1960 she was a teacher in the Mt. Lebanon School District. In 1985 she received an award from College Misericordia, Dallas, for "Excellence in Teaching." She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association; the National Education Association; Rho Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma; the Dallas Women of Rotary; and the Meadows Nursing Center Auxiliary. She was a Red Cross volunteer; a substitute driver for Meals-On-Wheels; and also took puppies from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (S.P.C.A.) to visit patients in nursing homes. She and her husband, Henry J. "Jack" McCain, celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on April 8, 1997. Mr. McCain survives. Also surviving are a son, Marc of Philadelphia; a daughter, Marcy of Houston, Texas; a granddaughter, Allison McCain; two brothers, Charles Tope of Aiken, S.C., and Donald Tope of Stuart, Fla.; a stepbrother, John Stafford of Wheaton, Ill.; three stepsisters, Ruth Duesing of Yalaha, Fla., Helen Holschuh of Hilton Head, S.C., and Marion Springer of Inverness, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Ruth E. McMasters
Owner of Lunch Room in Sycamore, taught ceramics
Ruth E. Wilson Rose McMasters, 82, of 1198 West Wylie Avenue, Washington, died at 12:28 a.m. Monday, February 23, 1998, in Kade Nursing Home, Washington, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 12, 1915, in Metz, W.Va., a daughter of James A. and Essie Campbell Wilson. Mrs. McMasters was a member of West Union Presbyterian Church. She worked for Waynesburg Restaurant as a waitress for several years, later worked as a seamstress for Greenway Manufacturing and as a cook for Waynesburg College, all in Waynesburg, before owning and operating the Lunch Room Restaurant in Sycamore. She also worked with and taught ceramics for several years. Her first husband, Cecil Rose, died July 27, 1959, and her second husband, Clarence M. McMasters, died July 29, 1976. Surviving are a daughter, Judy M. Fonner of Prosperity; two sons, James A. Rose of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Charles E. Rose of Washington; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; a stepdaughter, Dorothy Baker of Silver Springs, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. She was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are a stepson, William M. McMasters; and four sisters and two brothers.

Charles E. Pasco
Member of West Alexander United Methodist Church
Charles E. Pasco, 74, of West Alexander, formerly of Valley Grove, W.Va., died unexpectedly Sunday, February 22, 1998, in his home. He was born November 7, 1923, in Ohio County, W.Va., a son of Charles Errett and Mary Berger Pasco. Mr. Pasco was a member of West Alexander United Methodist Church, where he participated in the Men's Sunday School Class. Mr. Pasco and his wife operated a service station in Valley Grove and he later worked for Woody Knollinger's Middle Creek Grange as a mechanic. He belonged to the West Alexander Saddle Club and enjoyed gardening and horses. He was married to Ella Clark Pasco, who died December 31, 1993. Surviving are two sisters, Virginia Lippian of Maynard, Ohio, and Mary Lou Duymich of Wheeling, W.Va. A sister, Dorothy Lipscomb, is deceased.

Theodore Pschick
Former instructor at W &J College
Word has been received of the death of Theodore "Frank" Pschick, 83, of Maple Glen, who died February 16, 1998, in his home. Mr. Pschick was the son of Gregory and Anna Pschick. He was a 1933 graduate of Canonsburg High School and attended Carnegie Tech. In 1942-43 he was employed as an instructor in the physics department of Washington and Jefferson College in the Army Specialized Training Program. He retired in 1973 as a senior electronics engineer from Philc-Ford Corp., Philadelphia. His wife, Irene Horsky Pschick, is deceased, as well as two sons, Theodore Jr. and Paul Pschick. A requiem memorial service was held at St. Stephen's Orthodox Cathedral, Philadelphia.

Charles E. Wagner
Retired postal carrier and U.S. Army veteran
Charles E. "Tuna" Wagner, 55, of Ash Street, Canonsburg, died Monday, February 23, 1998, in his home. Born December 7, 1942, in Canonsburg, he was a son of the late Charles F. and Marie Manes Wagner. Mr. Wagner was a postal carrier, retiring in 1988 from the Canonsburg and McMurray post offices. He was a member of the Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church; SNPJ No. 138 of Strabane; AFU No. 149 of Strabane; and Polish National Union No. 149 of Strabane, where he was past president. Mr. Wagner had served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the VFW Post 191 of Canonsburg and the American Legion Post 175 of Washington. He was an avid bowler, having bowled for several area leagues. On August 20, 1966, he married Mary Lee Ruse, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Charles E. Wagner Jr. and Brian K. Wagner, both of Canonsburg; a daughter, Tammi Orenbaun of Canonsburg; three grandsons, Coty Wagner and Thomas and Justin Orenbaun; two brothers, Robert Wagner and Dale "Mickey" Wagner, both of Washington; and several nieces and nephews.

Pauline R. Wiley
Registered nurse for 20 years in West Virginia
Pauline R. "Peg" Wiley, 69, of Bobtown, died Sunday, February 22, 1998, at home. She was born December 11, 1928, in Bobtown, a daughter of John B. and Viola Tinkey Wiley. Ms. Wiley was Methodist and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a 1947 graduate of Point Marion High School and attended nursing school at West Virginia University and Fairmont State College. She retired from Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va., where she worked as a registered nurse for 20 years. Surviving are two brothers, Jerome K. Wiley of Bobtown and John L. Wiley of Portland, Ore; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Deceased are a sister, Wilmerine Stahoviak; and three brothers, Louis Eugene Wiley, James Martin Wiley and Lynn McNeil Wiley.

Thomas J. Balaban Jr.
Carmichaels resident retired coal miner
Thomas J. Balaban Jr., 68, of Carmichaels, died Tuesday, February 24, 1998, in UPMC Presbyterian. He was born January 2, 1930, in Dunbar, a son of Thomas and Barbara Markusic Balaban Sr. Mr. Balaban was a retired coal miner at Humphrey No. 7 Mine, Osage, W.Va. and was a member of the UMW Local 1085 of Osage. He was also a member of St. Hugh Roman Catholic Church of Carmichaels. On August 23, 1958, he married Dolores Natale Balaban, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Pam Balaban of Carmichaels and Cindy Balaban of Waynesburg; two brothers, Samuel Balaban of Dunbar and Joseph Balaban of Connellsville; and two sisters, Mildred Balaban and Rose Marie Adamsky, both of Dunbar. Deceased are two brothers, Steve and George Balaban; and two sisters, Catherine Francis and Anna Hodnik.

Andrew A. Bankey Jr.

Andrew Arthur Bankey Jr., 65, of 13316 St. James, Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Blainesburg, died at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, February 24, 1998, in the Malachi House, Cleveland, Ohio. He was born April 29, 1932, in Smallwood, a son of the late Andrew Arthur Bankey Sr. and Elizabeth Malinskey Bankey. He was self-employed painter and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, Dolores Kozar Bankey; two sons, Andrew A. Bankey III and John Bankey both of Cleveland; three daughters, Jacqueline Bankey, Kathleen Wallace and Victoria Bankey all of Cleveland; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Pauline Farkas of Daisytown, Helen Wintzak of East Chicago, Ill., and Marion Bizet of Bentleyville; two brothers, Robert Bankey of Newton Falls, Ohio, and Victor Bankey of Lordstown, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, John Bankey; and a sister, Dolores Griffit.

Valentine DeTemple
Worked as welder at Fort Pitt Bridge
Valentine DeTemple, 70, of Strabane, died Monday, February 23, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals, Canonsburg. Born September 24, 1927, in Canonsburg, he was a son of Frank and Henrietta Jae DeTemple. Mr. DeTemple lived his entire life in Strabane and was Catholic. Prior to retirement he was a welder at the former Fort Pitt Bridge Works in Canonsburg. Mr. DeTemple was a member of SNPJ Lodge 138 of Strabane; the Moose Lodge 127 of Canonsburg; and VFW Post 553 of Strabane. On September 14, 1963, he married Frances L. "Dolly" Neidrick, who died March 8, 1991. Surviving are a son, Valentine J. DeTemple, at home; two brothers, Joseph DeTemple of Washington and John DeTemple of Lakeworth, Fla.; two sisters, Sue Hixenbaugh of Burgettstown and Fran Regelman of Brentwood, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Frank DeTemple, and a sister, Marie Carmen.

Louise Dennis O'Donnell Dunlap, 79, of Mingo Junction, Ohio, formerly of Burgettstown, died Sunday, February 22, 1998, at Rosewood Manor, Yorkville, Ohio. She was born October 2, 1918, in Turtle Creek, a daughter of Charles and Viola Dennis. Surviving is a daughter, Rebecca Sue O'Donnell Creamer of Mingo Junction. Deceased are her first husband, Dave O'Donnell and her second husband, Howard Dunlap; and a sister, Kathleen Charlier. Services and interment are being held in Ohio.

James Grady
Steel worker 16 years with Dravo Co.
James "Noel" Grady, 59, of Houston, died at 5:58 p.m. Monday, February 23, 1998, at Allegheny University Hospitals, Canonsburg, due to cardiac arrest. Born June 28,1939, in Imperial, he was a son of the late Walter and May Grady. Mr. Grady worked for the Dravo Co. for 16 years, where he was a steel worker and he also served with the U.S. Marines for two years. His wife, Elizabeth Visconti Grady, survives. Also surviving are a son, James Grady of Houston; two daughters, Jamie Grady of Las Vegas, Nev., and Dawn Grady of Pittsburgh; three brothers, Robert Grady of North Strabane and Richard Grady and William Grady, both of Bridgeville; and two sisters, Alice Lee of Pittsburgh and Annette Grady of Bridgeville. Deceased are two brothers, Ralph Grady and Vaughn Grady; and a sister, Helen Grady.

Samuel D. Johnson
Member of First Baptist Church in McDonald
Samuel D. Johnson, 89, of Oakdale, formerly of McDonald, died Monday, February 23, 1998, in Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born May 15, 1908, in McDonald, and was raised by foster parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson of McDonald. Mr. Johnson was employed by the Carnegie-Pittsburgh Coal Co. in McDonald, where he earned a special award from the Bureau of Mines for administering first aid. He also worked for two years at the American Bridge Co. in Ambridge, and he was an amateur boxer in his younger days. In 1943, he entered the U. S. Army and served as a corporal during World War II. He was honorably discharged at Fort Dix, N.J., in 1945. Mr. Johnson was a member of First Baptist Church in McDonald, where he was baptized in 1920 by the Rev. G. E. Sallie. He was a member of its Missionary Choir. He was a member of United Mineworkers of America, and a member of Lincoln Star Masonic Lodge 71. On November 16, 1935, he married Bertha Hargrove, who died January 1980. On April 1, 1986, he married Yvonne Lewis, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Monte Gene Edmonds of McDonald and Garrette Lee Edmonds of Washington; four daughters, Portia Littleberry of Pittsburgh, Joyce Morin of St. Petersburg, Fla., Tonya Denise Edmonds of Oakdale and Dawyna Rae Steed of Lindenwold, N.J.; and eight grandchildren. Deceased are a brother and three sisters.

1996 Blackhawk graduate dies from car accident
Mark Paul Kasparek, 20, of Darlington, died Monday, February 23, 1998, as a result of injuries from a car accident. Mark was born August 30, 1977, in Rochester. He is the son of Debra Zimmerman Stewart of Beaver and Edward J. Shields of New Brighton; his birth father is Gerald Kasparek of Elwood City; and his stepfather is William Stewart of Beaver. He was a member of First Church of God, New Brighton, and a 1996 graduate of Blackhawk High School. Surviving are a sister, Kimberly Fox of Vectorville, Calif.; a brother, E. Christopher Shields of Darlington; a stepbrother, Jeffrey Stewart of New Brighton; grandmothers, Shirley Zimmerman of New Freeport and Tillie Shields of new Brighton; great-grandfather, Carl Strawn of Waynesburg; great-grandmother, Margaret Moninger of New Freeport; two aunts and uncles; and a niece. Deceased are his two grandfathers, Paul Zimmerman and Ed Shields; great-grandmother, Edna Strawn; and great-grandfather, Donley Moninger.

Ferne L. Kuhn

The Rev. Ferne L. Kuhn, 76, of Summerville, formerly of Washington, died Tuesday, February 24, 1998. She was born December 2, 1921. Rev. Kuhn was a former minister at the First Church of the Nazarene, Washington, for 20 years. Surviving are her husband, The Rev. John C. Kuhn; five daughters, Judy Glasgow of Beaver Falls, Patricia Summers of Tidioute, Hope Shoemaker of Canonsburg, Doris Davis of Canonsburg and Kathy Wheeler of Washington; a son, John G. Kuhn of Washington; 11 granchildren, Scott Glasgow, Shane Harden, Mark Kuhn, Dawn Harden, Janie Glasgow, Christopher Davis, Jason Davis, Tina Shoemaker, Brandon Wheeler, Jordon Wheeler, Jacob Davis; and three great-grandchildren. A grandson, Shon Harden, is deceased.

Henry C. Reese Jr., 32, of North Main Street, Washington, died Sunday, February 22, 1998, at Washington Hospital. He was born September 18, 1965, in Washington, son of the late Henry C. Reese Sr. and Eleanor J. Reese of Washington. Mr. Reese was Protestant. Surviving, in addition to his mother, is a brother, William J. Reese of Washington; and a sister, Deanna L. Hindman of Washington; one niece; and two nephews. Funeral arrangements will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Betty A. Smith, 66, of Mather, died Tuesday, February 24, 1998, at Washington Hospital. She was born December 30, 1931, in Mather, a daughter of the late James Fencil and Mary Zaverack Fencil of Mather. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Marcellus Church, Jefferson. She lived most of her life in Mather and was a graduate of Jefferson High School. She was a homemaker and enjoyed playing bingo. On February 26, 1949, she married Lloyd Donald Smith, who survives. Also surviving are a son, James L. Smith of Triadelphia, W.Va.; and three grandchildren, Jennifer Fuller, Amanda Houghton and James Lloyd Smith. Deceased is a sister, Dolores Mostowoy.
