Catherine R. Perry
Registered school nurse in New Jersey
Catherine R. Perry, 71, of Turnersville, N.J., died Wednesday, January 7, 1998. She was born January 31, 1926, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Joseph and Rose Destio Rizzo. Mrs. Perry was a graduate of Presbyterian School of Nursing in Pittsburgh and attended the University of Pittsburgh and was a graduate of Glassboro State College. She taught nursing in South Side Hospital in Pittsburgh and was an industrial nurse for Westinghouse for the U.S. Nautilus Atomic Submarine. She was also a Red Cross nurse in the Korean War and was a school nurse in Washington Township for 20 years. She retired in 1991. Mrs. Perry was a member of the Gloucester County Nurses/N.J. Nurses Association. She went to Disney World with eight senior classes as the school nurse and attended Washington Township band trips to Canada and Virginia. She had a tree planted in her memory at Birches School in Washington Township. She was honored by the mayor and Washington Township School Board on her retirement. Surviving is her husband of 49 years, Edward B. Perry; a daughter, Holly Battiste of Barrington, N. J.; a son, Edward J. Perry of McLean, Va.; a granddaughter, Hannah Battiste; a brother, Albert Rizzo of New Hope; and a sister, Mary Kahny of Princeton, N.J.

Carl St. Clair
Member of Westover United Methodist Church
Carl St. Clair, 87, of 53 Lane Street, Westover, W.Va., died Thursday, January 8, 1998, at Ruby Memorial Hospital. He was born February 21, 1910, in Monongalia County, a son of Freeland and Birdie McClure St. Clair. He was a retired truck driver and a member of the Westover United Methodist Church. Surviving is his wife, Merle Bessie McCord St. Clair; a son, Kenneth M. St. Clair of West Salem, Ohio; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren. Deceased is a son, Roy E. St. Clair; two brothers, Dale St. Clair and "Sport" McClure; and a sister, Opal Ullom.

Albert T. Sypula
Retired craneman of Pullman Standard
Albert T. "Tom" Sypula, 68, of 17-D Sheldon Park, Natrona Heights, died at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 1998, in Allegheny Valley Hospital, Natrona Heights. He had been ill for the past month. He was born April 22, 1929, in Tarentum, a son of Andrew and Anna Backo Sypula. He was a 1947 graduate of Tarentum High School and was a retired craneman for Pullman Standard in Butler, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Our Lady of the Most Blessed Sacrament Parish, Most Blessed Sacrament Worship Site, Natrona Heights. He had lived in Natrona Heights the past 33 years. Mr. Sypula enjoyed all sports, gardening, landscaping and flowers. Surviving is his wife of 48 years, June L. McAllister Sypula; four sons, Thomas G. Sypula of Washington, Lynn D. Sypula of Creighton, Kim M. Sypula of Peters Township and Charles A. Sypula at home; six grandchildren; a brother, Anthony R. Sypula of Sarasota, Fla.; and a sister, Betty McAninch of Sarasota. Deceased are three grandchildren, Peter, Cecelia and Maria Sypula.

George W. Eppler Jr.
Longtime Eighty Four resident was Navy veteran
George W. Eppler Jr., 70, of Eighty Four, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born June 23, 1927, in New Eagle, a son of George and Elizabeth Richardson Eppler. Mr. Eppler was a longtime resident of Eighty Four, where he and his wife owned and operated the family farm. He attended Waynesburg College and was a U.S. Navy veteran during World War II, serving on a mine sweeper. He retired as a mechanic from Millcraft Industries, Washington. Surviving is his wife, Mary Eppler, with whom he celebrated 49 years of marriage on December 4, 1997.

Bernard J. Grebb
One-time California chamber's Man of the Year
Bernard J. Grebb, 88, of 894 Wood Street, California, died 8:30 p.m. Friday, January 9, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born September 24, 1909, in California, a son of John and Marie Urkevitch Grebb. He was a retired wholesale salesman and restaurateur. He formerly was a community leader, having served on the school boards in East Pike Run Township and California for a combined 27 years. He also was a charter member of California Rotary Club, a member of Lions Club, chaired California Community Fourth of July Picnic and was a recipient of California Chamber of Commerce's Man of Year award. He was married for 61 years to Irma Zandardelli Grebb, who died August 2, 1995. Surviving are two sons, J. Budd Grebb and J. Regis Grebb both of California; a daughter, Bernadine Fabriziani of Belle Vernon; two grandchildren, Dr. Barry Fabriziani of Doylestown and Terry Danko of Belle Vernon; two great-granddaughters; and two twin great-grandsons. Deceased are a brother, Staley Grebb; and a sister, Edna Grebb. There will be no public viewing and interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the California Area Senior High School library or California Public Library.

Laura S. Haudenshield
Longtime member of Center Presbyterian Church
Laura S. Haudenshield, 93, of McMurray, died Friday, January 9, 1998, at her home. She was born on January 23, 1904, in Baldwin Township, a daughter of Samuel Louis and Katherine Hogue Simmons She was a member of Center Presbyterian Church for 59 years. Surviving are two sons, James C. Haudenshield of Rogers, Ark., and Charles H. Haudenshield of McMurray; four grandchildren, Scott, Mary and John Haudenshield and Nancy Kelly; and a sister, Marie Wood of El Paso, Texas. Deceased is her husband, Christian Haudenshield.

Herbert D. Hazlett
Retired mechanic at coal mine
Herbert D. Hazlett, 84, of Nannie Street, Washington, formerly of Prosperity, died at 2 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. He was born June 20, 1913, in Fayette County, a son of Charles Addison and Elva Pease Hazlett. He was a member of Upper Ten Mile Presbyterian Church. He formerly was employed as a mechanic at BethEnergy Inc.'s Mine No. 58 in Marianna. He was a 1932 graduate of Trinity High School. On December 20, 1934, he married Frances Anna Huffman who died August 31, 1993. Surviving are two sons, Herbert D. Hazlett of Fredericktown and Melvin Richard Hazlett of Prosperity; four daughters, Cordilia Whitley of Washington, Dolores Montgomery of Waynesburg, Bessie Rockenhauser of Elgin, Ill., and Frances Chappel of Washington; a sister Ora May Gilmore of Greensburg; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Deceased are a grandson, Joseph Hazlett; a brother, Fred Houston, and a sister, Margaret Houston. At the request of the deceased, there will be no visitation. Services and interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to charity of the donor's choice.

Donald Earnest Hench
Fla. man was former Waynesburg resident
Donald Earnest Hench, 82, of Sun Lake Loop, Lake Mary, Fla., died Thursday, January 8, 1998. He was born in Waynesburg and was a graduate of Waynesburg College. He had lived in Waynesburg before moving to Baltimore, Md., and then moved to central Florida in 1987. He was a chemist for the federal government and was a member of Ascension Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Hench of Lake Mary, Fla.; two sons, D. Eric Hench of Winter Springs, Fla., and B. Craig Hench of Lake Mary; and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 12, at Ascension Lutheran Church. Burial in Baldwin-Fairchild Crematory, Orlando, Fla.

Elizabeth A. McCardle
Former Washington resident taught in 7th Ward
Elizabeth Ann McCardle, 84, a resident of Greenwood Methodist Home, Greenwood, S.C., formerly of Allison Avenue, Washington, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. She ws born November 18, 1918, in Washington, a daughter of Edward J. and Elizabeth Kehl McCardle. Miss McCardle received her graduate degree from Penn State University and taught third grade in the 7th Ward School for many years. Although she had made her home in Savannah, Ga., and Greenwood since 1985, Miss McCardle kept her membership in West Washington United Methodist Church. Surviving are three sisters, Sophia Morris of Greenwood, Ruth Carlock of Due West, S.C., and Mary Lappe of Washington; and a brother, Thomas McCardle of New Windsor, N.Y.

Charles W. Meighen
Truck driver for mobile home parks
Charles William Meighen, 66, of 200 Jefferson Street, Evans City, formerly of Greene County, died at 6:48 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 1998, in Passavant Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born March 28, 1931, in Washington, a son of Charles S. and Elizabeth Redinger Meighen. Mr. Meighen was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church, Waynesburg. He worked at several mobile home parks throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania as a serviceman and truck driver. On October 27, 1950 he married Mary L. Minor Meighen, who died May 7, 1994. Surviving are two daughters, Patti Lesnett of Cameron Star Route, Waynesburg, and Maggie Meighen of Cranberry Township; a son, Bill Meighen of Carmichaels; six grandchildren, Vicky Hughes, Daisy, Amanda and Artie Lesnett, Devan Ness and Christopher Meighen; one great-granddaughter; a brother, Giles H. Meighen of Mt. Morris Star Route, Waynesburg; and two nephews. Deceased, in addition to his wife, is a daughter, Marcella Leah Meighen.

Kathryn E. Moore
Waynesburg resident enjoyed bowling
Kathryn E. Moore, 43, of Waynesburg R.D.4, died at 2:47 a.m. Friday, January 9, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg. Miss Moore was born November 11, 1954, in Washington, a daughter of Lois Anderson Moore of Waynesburg R.D.4 and the late Everett Moore. She spent her early life in Waynesburg, and after 18 years in Elyria, Ohio, returned to Waynesburg in March 1997. Miss Moore enjoyed bowling, playing pool and sketching. In addition to her mother, surviving are two sisters, Diane Kniha of Waynesburg R.D.4 and Brenda Green of Eastview; and two brothers, Harry Moore of Khedive and George Moore of Washington. Deceased is a brother, William Stanley Moore.

Robina Rae Murray
Had worked as private duty nurse at AGH
Robina Rae Murray, 86, of 953 Locust Avenue, Washington, formerly of Thomas Campbell Apartments and Henderson Avenue, Washington, died at 11:50 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a long illness. She was born January 9, 1912, in West Newton, a daughter of George and Margaret Herrington Rae. Mrs. Murray was a graduate of the Allegheny General Hospital School of Nursing and worked at Allegheny General as a private duty nurse. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Washington. On September 26, 1938, she married Wilbur T. "Mac" Murray, who died March 17, 1995. Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie J. Keirs, with whom she made her home, and Peggy Scears of Houston; a son, Robert Todd Murray of Washington; six grandchildren, Mark Allan Keirs, Robin J. Burns, Karen L. Keirs, Jennifer L. Murray, Joseph Todd Scears and Jason L. Scears; and five great-grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to her husband, are her stepfather, Robert Holding; and two stepbrothers, William and Howard Holding.

Hannah A. Pollana
Hickory woman had formerly lived in Florida
Hannah Antoinette Pollana, 86, of Hickory, died Sunday, January 11, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born June 7, 1911, in Etna, a daughter of Anthony and Antoinette Alich Laurich. Mrs. Pollana was a member of St. Andrews Roman Catholic Church in Cape Coral, Fla., where she lived for 24 years, and more recently was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Burgettstown. Surviving are two sons, Louis I. Pollana of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and John R. Pollana of Hickory; three daughters, Rosemarie Taylor, Janet F. Bressanelli and Betty Jo Stoner, all of Hickory; a brother, August Laurich of Burgettstown; four sisters, Rose Bongiorni and Mildred Yamber, both of Hickory, and Evelyn Ostop and Mary Yamber, both of Burgettstown; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, John Louis Pollana, who died June 17, 1991; two grandsons, Donnie Taylor and Keith Pollana; and a brother, William Laurich.

James M. Ramsey
Charleroi man was Navy veteran during Vietnam War
James M. Ramsey, 50, of Charleroi, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Haven Crest Nursing Center, Carroll Township. He was born February 13, 1947, in Brownsville, a son of late Thomas J. and Marian Crockett Ramsey. Mr. Ramsey was a member of Mary Mother of the Church Parish, Charleroi, and was a U.S. Navy veteran during the Vietnam War. At the time of his death, he was employed as a tow motor operator at R.T.S. Packaging Company in Charleroi. Surviving are his wife, Sharon Flaherty Spadafora Ramsey; four sons, Michael Ramsey of Monongahela, and Scott, James and Joseph Ramsey, all of Charleroi; two stepdaughters, Lisa Kite of Monongahela and Nicole Nucci of Charleroi; two brothers, Peter Ramsey of Brownsville and Thomas Ramsey of Middleburg, Fla.; two sisters, Margaret Miller and Nancy Wright, both of Beallsville; three stepgrandchildren, Jonathan Kite, Brent Nucci and Charity Parham.

Fred A. Stewart
Retired from McGraw-Edison after 20 years
Fred A. Stewart, 70, of Leet Street, Washington, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, January 11, 1998, at home. He had been ill since September. He was born August 25, 1927, in Washington, a son of Clara Wheeler Stewart of Pittsburgh and the late Fred Stewart. Mr. Stewart had been employed by Washington Bottling Company for 18 years and was employed by McGraw-Edison in the shipping department for 20 years prior to retiring in 1990. He attended Washington area schools, and during World War II served in the U.S. Army Air Force in Labrador. Mr. Stewart was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion and the Independent Club in Washington. He married Josephine P. Mantia, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters; Barbara Jo Jaecks of Albuquerque, N.M., Karen Leek of Washington; two sisters, Marie Adams and Jean Mitchell, both of Pittsburgh; and four grandchildren, Anthony Hull, Daniel Stewart Jaecks, Michael Jay Jaecks and Sara Marie Sharp.

Mary E. Stoneking
New Eagle woman was active in Cub Scouting
Mary E. Stoneking, 71, of Sixth Avenue, New Eagle, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. She was born Wednesday, July 14, 1926, in Los Angeles, Calif., a daughter of George and Lida H. Balmer Schaudt. Mrs. Stoneking lived most of her life in New Eagle, was formerly of the Zelionople area and attended the Mars Area High School She was a member of First Christian Church of Monongahela and its Christian Women's Fellowship. Mrs. Stoneking was active in Cub Scouts for more than 13 years, serving as den mother and committee member and chairperson for Pack 1446, which met at First United Methodist Church of Monongahela. Surviving are her husband, Robert T. Stoneking, with whom she celebrated 45 years of marriage on April 24, 1997; two sons, Robert S. Stoneking and Herbert A. Stoneking, both of New Eagle; a grandson, Ian M. Stoneking; two sisters, Helen Crothers of Portersville and Leona Stasko of Pittsburgh; and a brother, Milton Schaudt of Harmony. Deceased are a sister, Georgetta Schaudt; and two brothers, John and Edward Schaudt.

Althea B. Swift
Formerly of Carmichaels and Nemacolin
Althea B. Swift, 71, of Washington, formerly of Carmichaels and Nemacolin, died at 10:08 p.m. Friday, January 9, 1998, at the Washington home of her son, Gerald E. "Buck" Swift, after a three-month illness. She was born August 3, 1926, in Greensboro, a daughter of Edward Mills and Minnie Garrison Rumble. Mrs. Swift was a graduate of Monongahela Township High School. She had resided with her son for the past two months. On October 25, 1946, she married Walter F. Swift, who died October 21, 1972. Surviving are two sons, Gary L. Swift of West Palm Beach, Fla., and Gerald E. "Buck" Swift of Washington; five grandchildren, Gerald E. Jr., Jeffrey A., Brian and Shari Swift and Chad Groves; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Freda Sweeney of Carmichaels; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Isaac Rumble; and a sister, T. Kathryn Homrock.

Douglas Dale Temple
Graysville resident worked in landscaping
Douglas Dale Temple, 34, of Graysville, died Saturday, January 10, 1998, at home, following a battle with cancer. He was born October 4, 1963, at Waynesburg, a son of Albert Dale and Alma L. Tennant Temple of Graysville. Mr. Temple was a former employee of ABD Sprinklers of Bethel Park and worked at underground construction and landscaping. He was a member of the former Bethel Church in Pine Bank. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Marguerite "Charly" King Temple; three children, Joshua Douglas, Kylie Noelle and Megan Ruth Temple, all at home; a brother, Kevin Temple of Waynesburg; two sisters, Tammy Hinebaugh of Brunswick, Me., and Jody Temple of Graysville.

James Gary Thorpe
Army training instructor during Vietnam
James Gary "Jim" Thorpe, 52, of Langeloth, died Thursday, January 8, 1998, in Grafton, W.Va. He was born September 13, 1946, in Pittsburgh, a son of Rosemary Kovacic Thorpe of Presto, and the late Henry James Thorpe. Mr. Thorpe was a master sergeant training instructor with the 2073rd U.S. Army Training School. He served as a small arms repairman with the 335th Assault Helicopter Company during the Vietnam War. He was an active member of the Church of Christ in Langeloth and the Church of Christ in Grafton. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Kotouch Thorpe of Langeloth; a son, James Clark Thorpe of Langeloth; a daughter, Margaret Jeanne Thorpe of Langeloth; three brothers, Rudolph T. "Terry" Thorpe of Presto, Mark Paul Thorpe of Newport News, Va., and Matthew Henry Thorpe of Wexford; two sisters, Dianne Fiorentini of Carnegie and Mary Marcia Thorpe of Presto.

Wayne S. Ward
Steelworker retired from U.S. Steel's Irvin Works
Wayne S. Ward, 82, of Washington, died at 12:40 a.m. Sunday, January 11, 1998, in Washington Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born October 31, 1915, in Washington, a son of Samuel R. and Sarah Margaret Wolf Ward. Mr. Ward attended Trinity High School before entering the U.S. Army for service during World War II. He worked at the Irvin Works of U.S. Steel until his retirement and was a member of United Steelworkers Union Local 2227. On November 19, 1947, he married Bertha B. Kopko Ward, who died on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. Surviving are a son, Darrell W. Ward of Canonsburg; a daughter, Donna Lytle of Heathrow, Fla.; a stepson, Richard D. Kopko of Washington; a brother, Randall "Ike" Ward of Washington; two sisters, Martha of Oregon and Peggy of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, John, Kenneth and Leo; and three sisters, Betty, Libby and Virginia.
