Paul L. Beck
Washington man was scientist and engineer
Paul L. Beck, 67, of Royal Oak Drive, Washington, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington. He was born January 4, 1931, in Canonsburg, a son of Clarence F. and Gladys Metcaff Beck. He was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School and received his bachelor of science degree from Waynesburg College in 1953. He also had special study courses in power system relaying and supervisory management from AIEE, IEEE, Westinghouse, General Electric and the American Management Association. Mr. Beck was employed in the fields of consulting, engineering, design, marketing, service and maintenance of electrical power equipment and systems. During these years, he served on various technical committees of NEMA, IEEE, ANSI and MIC. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, the Industrial Application Society, the Physical Society of Pittsburgh, the Instrument Society of America and the American Association of Advanced Science. He also was an affiliate member of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers, Washington Chapter. Mr. Beck achieved a patent on a solid-state circuit for an anti-pumping x-y circuit for power circuit breakers. He was a member of Church of the Covenant, where he had served as a deacon. In August 1953, he married Dolores M. Maloy, who died April 23, 1997. Surviving are three daughters, Sherri L. Vlainich of Amity, Beth A. Grenfell of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and Donna R. Sheridan of Ruffin, N.C.; four grandchildren, Erica Lynne, Michael Richard and Marc Andrew Vlainich. and Jason Paul Grenfell; a niece; and four nephews. Deceased are a brother, Robert A. Beck Sr.; and a sister, Shirley F. Oldland.

Robert T. Clawson
Former fire chief of Finleyville VFD
Robert T. Clawson, 70, of Venetia, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in St. Clair Memorial Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born August 16, 1927, in Pittsburgh, a son of Albert T. and Thelma Weightman Clawson. He was retired from Pennsylvania-American Water Co. and was a World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. Mr. Clawson was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Roman Catholic Church, Finleyville. He also was a member of Moose Lodge 172 of Finleyville, where he was secretary; Canonsburg Lodge 127; District 11 of the Moose, where he served as past president and secretary; and American Legion Post 613 of Finleyville. He was a life member of the Legion of the Moose, where he served as district secretary and received the Pilgrim Degree of Merit; the Hackett Club; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 553. He also was an associate member of Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department and had served as fire chief from 1965 to 1967. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine School Clawson; two sons, Larry J. Clawson of Clairton and James D. Clawson of Houston; two daughters, Kathleen Finney of Forest, Va., and Karen Reffert of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Lenore Adametz and Joann Heckman, both of New Bern, N.C.; a stepfather, Joseph Adametz of New Bern; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Deceased is a son, Robert Allen Clawson.

E. Lynn Davidson
Iowa man was WWII veteran
E. Lynn Davidson, 83, of North Liberty, Iowa, formerly of Palm Springs, Calif., died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa. He was born September 1, 1914, in Midway, a son of James and Lydia Weaver Davidson. He was a member of American Legion, Los Compadres Riding Club and a charter member of the Elks, all of Palm Springs. During World War II, Mr. Davidson served in the Army Air Force. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Davidson; a son, Barry Lynn Davidson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a sister, Wilma Wilson of Midway; an uncle, William Davidson of Midway; and two nephews.

Helen M. Dziak
Member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish
Helen Martha Dziak, 85, of Fredericktown, died at 4:05 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Golden Moments Personal Care Home, Mather. She was born September 20, 1912, in LaBelle, a daughter of Martin and Dorothy Trun Malindzak. Mrs. Dziak was a homemaker, who enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She was a member of St. Oliver Plunkett Parish, where she was involved in its Christian Mothers and Ladies Guild. She was also a member of Jednota Lodge and the National Slovak Society. On February 3, 1930, she married Paul T. Dziak, who died July 12, 1990, following their 60th wedding anniversary. Surviving are four children, Barbara Richards of Brunswick, Ohio, Paul T. Dziak of Euclid, Ohio, Mary Ann Keruskin of Fredericktown, and Dorothy L. Pinto of Washington; a brother, Edward Malindzak of the state of California; nine grandchildren, Ann M. Leist, Valerie J. Mack, David W. Richards, Peter J. Keruskin, Paul T. Keruskin, Todd E. Keruskin, Matthew W. Pinto, Jason P. Pinto, and Eric M. Pinto; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two infant daughters, Gerradette and Bernadette Dziak; four brothers, John, Joseph, George and Steve Malindzak; and a sister, Lillian Petrick.

Pearl E. Eklund
Member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church
Pearl Eliza Eklund, 90, of Ravenna, Ohio, formerly of Hillcrest Street, Washington, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Long Meadow Care Center, Ravenna. She was born July 2, 1908, in West Alexander, a daughter of Francis Leroy and Sara Alice Burge Hennen. She was a homemaker and a member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Washington. On November 2, 1929, she married Henry E. Eklund, who died July 1, 1993. Surviving are two nephews, George R. Jackson and Ralph Hennen; a niece, Betty Virginia Tymcio; and 16 great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are a brother, Henry E. Hennen; a sister, Lillian G. Ryan; and two nephews, Donald and Robert Hennen.

David W. Garrett
Brownsville man employed by Mon River Towing
David William Garrett, 38, of Vesta 7, Brownsville, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born January 18, 1960, in Lock Four, a son of Robert Gedman and Alice Rice Garrett of Brownsville. He had formerly been employed by Mon River Towing. On September 2, 1977, he married Barbara Garlow, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Joseph Garrett, at home; and a sister, Shirley Marie Hoover of Clarksburg, Md.

Adeline Giacobbe
Member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish
Adeline Giacobbe, 81, of Canonsburg, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in Country Meadows Nursing Center, Bridgeville, following a lengthy illness. She was born March 16, 1917, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Enrico and Josephine DiCio Panzera. Mrs. Giacobbe lived most of her life in Canonsburg, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish, where she participated in its Christian Mothers and Guild. She also was a member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Canonsburg 1211. On November 30, 1936, she married Anthony Giacobbe, who died December 6, 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Angela Marie Lepetre of Claremont, N.H., and Joanne Gump of Canonsburg; a son, John H. Giacobbe of Plaistow, N.H.; a sister, Mary Nicola of Pittsburgh; a brother, Henry Panzera of Bradenton, Fla; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Philomena Pagano and Frances Cacchione.

Gladys O. Kiefer

Gladys O. Kiefer, 87, of Fredericktown, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born October 2, 1910, in Washington, a daughter of William and Florence M. Edgar Sellers. Surviving are five children, John W. Kiefer of Canonsburg, Mary Ann Vihlidal of Bentleyville, Dorothy Chapman of Fredericktown, James Kiefer of Canonsburg and Robert Kiefer of Marianna; 11 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, John T. "Dutch" Kiefer, who died December 30, 1977; a brother; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Margaret Kirkpatrick

Margaret "Marnie" Kirkpatrick, 81, of Cecil, died Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Manor Care Nursing Home, McMurray. She was born October 7, 1916, in Portage, a daughter of John and Lena Clymire Williamson. Her husband, Floyd "Flossy" Kirkpatrick, is deceased. Mrs. Kirkpatrick was a homemaker and a member of Venice Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a son, John L. Kirkpatrick of Canonsburg; four sisters, Ethel Behling and Donna Slovik, both of Cecil, Delores Sachini of Follansbee, W.Va., and Betty Stewart of Cuddy; and a granddaughter, Tammy Mahramas of Bridgeville. Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a son, Robert Kirkpatrick; and three brothers, Alex, Bob and Jack Williamson.

Elmer E. Murphy Jr.
WW II vet, retired from Nemacolin Mine
Elmer E. Murphy Jr., 83, of Carmichaels R.D.2, died at 11:05 a.m. Saturday, July 25, 1998, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg, following a lengthy illness. He was born December 21, 1914, in Ronco, Fayette County, a son of Elmer E. Murphy Sr. and Christina Hower Murphy. On September 19, 1943, he married Clara V. Clark, who survives. Mr. Murphy was a retired coal miner from Nemacolin Mine with 45 years of service. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army in the Phillipines. He was a member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church in Carmichaels and a member of United Mine Workers of America. Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a daughter, Karen L. Murphy of Carmichaels; a brother, Charles Murphy of Glennie, Mich.; and four sisters, Sylvia Morris of Willoughby, Ohio, Edna Varesko of Euclid, Ohio, Dorothy Seni of Maple Heights, Ohio, and Margaret Teagarden of Rices Landing. Deceased are a brother, Jacob Murphy; and two sisters, Mary Baker and one who died in infancy.

Dorthalene M. Rose
Former nurse at Children's Hospital
Dorthalene M. Rose, 78, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Thursday, July 23, 1998, in South Hills Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg. Mrs. Rose was born August 23, 1919, in Mt. Pleasant, a daughter of Norman and Nettie Suter. She was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and received her bachelor of science and masters degrees in nursing from the University of Pittsburgh. She was employed as a nurse at Children's Hospital for 30 years and later worked for Presbyterian Home in Wilkinsburg. She was active in Calvary Lutheran Church in Wilkinsburg. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, John Rose; two brothers, William and Charles Suter; six sisters, Edeline Stefl, Naomi Lamb, Bernice Gelstharpe, Alma Suter, Opal Kastner, and Ruby Harmon.

James R. Sutherland
Mayor of West Alexander for 18 years
James R. "Bob" Sutherland, 63, of 204 Main Street, West Alexander, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born September 6, 1934, in West Alexander, a son of the late J. Roy and M. Elizabeth McAdoo Sutherland. He was mayor of West Alexander for the past 18 years. Mr. Sutherland was a retired inspector for Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corp. of Washington, formerly Jessop Steel. He was a member and trustee of West Alexander Presbyterian Church and a graduate of West Alexander High School. Mr. Sutherland was a member of Pennsylvania Mayors Association and a committeeman for the Republican Party. He also was a member of Pennsylvania SAR, IOOF Lodge 94 of Triadelphia and Wheeling Encampment. Surviving are his wife, Roberta Thornton Sutherland; three daughters, Leigh Ann Quinlan of Pennsylvania, Nancy Bentley of Reston, Va., and Dr. Rebecca Sutherland of Seattle, Wash.; a brother, John Sutherland of Nevada; three sisters, Romaine Fischer of West Alexander, Mary Burris of Birmingham, Ala., and Shirley Watier of Orlando, Fla.; and five grandchildren.

J. Donley Townsend
Retired from state Department of Revenue
J. Donley Townsend, 86, of Burgettstown, formerly of Peters Township, died Friday, July 24, 1998, in the trauma unit of University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, of multiple injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was born February 11, 1912, in Morgantown, W.Va., a son of James Listie and Bessie Hillberry Townsend. A 1930 graduate of Peters Township High School, Mr. Townsend was involved in milk transportation in the Burgettstown area. He later retired from the Department of Sales and Use Tax, Pennsylvania Department of Revenue, Pittsburgh office. Mr. Townsend was a member of Richard Vaux Lodge 454, F&AM of Burgettstown, the Syria Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. of Pittsburgh, and Independent Order of Odd Fellows 81 of Washington, where he was a former Noble Grand. He also was a member of Cross Creek United Presbyterian Church, where he was a trustee and elder. On July 2, 1939, in Washington, he married Margaret McClenathan, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert D. Townsend of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Peggy L. Ragan of Avella; a sister, Arna G. Baird of McMurray; three grandsons, James D. and Joseph H. Ragan, and Neil B. Townsend; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two brothers and a sister.

Pauline Garren
G.C. Murphy manager in Burgettstown
Pauline Garren, 70, of Bavington, died Monday, July 27, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born March 13, 1928, in Cherry Valley, a daughter of Joseph and Anna Irene Mitchell Roman. Mrs. Garren was manager of the G.C. Murphy store in Burgettstown before her retirement. On June 5, 1945, in Winchester, Va., she married Raymond Garren, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary Garren of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Joey, Darcie, Michel and Melanie Garren; and two brothers, Joseph and Andrew E. "Rip" Roman, both of Burgettstown.

Michael Klimenko
Retired foreman for Atlantic Richfield Co.
Michael "Butch" Klimenko, 79, of Langeloth, died Sunday, July 26, 1998, in his home. He was born November 19, 1918, in Slovan, a son of Anise and Mariya Possnack Klimenko. Mr. Klimenko was a 1937 graduate of Union High School, Burgettstown, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He worked for American Zinc Co., Pennsylvania Railroad and retired from Atlantic Richfield Co. (ARCO) as a foreman at its Kobuta plant. Mr. Klimenko was an honorary member of Slovan Veterans of Foreign Wars, ARCO Foreman's Club and Burgettstown Senior Citizens. He enjoyed golf, bowling and watching professional sports. In April 21, 1941, he married Margaret Prado, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Michele Krupey of Greensburg and Dorothy Green of State College; three grandchildren, Alexander and Jillian Krupey and Kylie Green; and four sisters, Elizabeth Klimenko Shockey of Waynesboro, Sonia Trosky Testa of Burgettstown, Martha Trosky Kirschner of Avella and Elsie Trosky Downer of Columbia, Md. Deceased are an infant daughter, Beverly Klimenko; a brother, Nicholas Klimenko; and two sisters, Dorothy Klimenko Swanik and Mary Trosky.
