Brice W. Smith Jr., 64, of Stockdale, died Wednesday, November 4, 1998, in his home. He was born February 16, 1934, in Monongahela, a son of the late Brice W. and Rose Kozemchak Smith. He lived most of his life in Scottdale and was Protestant. He was a member of Allenport Rod and Gun Club and Slovak Beneficial Society. Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War and was a member of American Legion Post 801 of Roscoe. He retired from U.S. Steel, Clairton Works. Surviving are three sons, John Haropko of Belle Vernon, Brice W. Smith III of Donora and Brian Smith of Arizona; three daughters, Darla Seighman and Kim Chipley, both of Charleroi, and Kathy Welch of Donora; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Mildress Ferdinando of Monongahela; and a brother, Donald L. Smith of Monongahela. In addition to his parents, a sister, Margaret Smith Rudean, is deceased. Rose Mary Interval, 75, of Fayette Street, Washington, died at 6:47 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1998, in the emergency room of Washington Hospital. Born May 17, 1923, in Washington, she was a daughter of Samuel and Mamie Spagnola Introvartol. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, and the Friendship Club of the church. She had formerly been employed by Brockway Glass Plant No.7 and was a1944 graduate of Washington High School. Surviving are a brother, Gandy Interval of Washington; two sisters, Mary G. Trifaro of Washington and Bessie "Bea" Oliverio of Washington; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Mary Elizabeth Kerfonta, 80, of Chess Street, Monongahela, died Thursday, November 5, 1998, at her residence. She was born November 12, 1917, in Donora, a daughter of Scott and Ann Williams Teets. Mrs. Kerfonta lived most of her life in Monongahela, where she was a member of Transfiguration Church. Surviving are six daughters, Bernadette Hamilton of Waynesburg, Rita A. Beckinger of Monongahela, Julie Trinkala of Charleroi, Mary Jane Dell of West Elizabeth, Harriet Kiefer of Monessen and Margaret Martin of Cleveland, Ohio; three sons, Anthony of Charleroi, Michael of Elizabeth and Alfred Kerfonta of Finleyville; 24 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel Geisler of Akron, Ohio, and Katherine Paulick of Berea, Ohio. Deceased are her husband, Anthony Gus Kerfonta, who died December 6, 1982; and two stepbrothers, Sherwood and Leonard Teets.

Alice H. Miller, 69, of Glassport, died Friday, November 6, 1998, in her home. She was born December 1, 1928, in Elizabeth, the daughter of the late Harry and Effie Siverling Hansen. Mrs. Miller was a deacon at Round Hill Presbyterian Church, Elizabeth. She was a volunteer at Jefferson Hospital. She was married to Richard L. Miller, who is deceased. Surviving are four sons, Richard L. Jr. of Elizabeth, Barry R. of Naperville, Ill., James H. of Washington and Ronald D. of Cranberry; one daughter, Carol Silverstein of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jean McDougal of Monongahela, Edith Brown of Las Vegas, Nev., and Eileen Russell of Elizabeth; and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph S. Ptaszek

Joseph S. Ptaszek, 76, of North Main Street, Washington, died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1998, in Kade Nursing Home, Washington. Born September 2, 1922, in Glendale, he was a son of the late George and Rosalia Ptaszek. Prior to retirement, Mr. Ptaszek was employed for 35 years with the Union Railroad. He was an active member of St. John's Orthodox Church in East Pittsburgh; served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater and waters around South America; was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175 of the American Legion; and was a 1941 graduate of Scott High School. On October15, 1983, he married Dorothy Fowler, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Leslie Ptaszek of Turtle Creek and Jacquelyn Shields of Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepsons, Hal Shipe of Washington and Mark Shipe of Georgia; three stepdaughters, Linda Shipe of Washington, Connie Selvaggi of Washington and Karen Martin of Florida; two brothers, John Ptaszek of Greentree and Frank Ptaszek of Mechanicsburg; and two sisters, Helen DiCello of Homestead, Pittsburgh, and Anne Isaac of Glendale. Deceased are a stepmother, a brother and a stepdaughter.

Nettie W. Roney
Eighty Four woman retired from U.S. Steel
Nettie W. Roney, 80, of Eighty Four, formerly of McKeesport, died Friday, November 6, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital, Carroll Township. She was born February 18, 1918, in Elrama, a daughter of David and Nettie Carter Wilds. Mrs. Roney was a former member of Park Baptist Church in McKeesport and attended the Church of the Nazarene in Monongahela after moving to Eighty Four. She retired from U.S. Steel, Homestead Works, after 31 years of service. On May 15, 1954, she married John A. Roney, who died June 14, 1993. Surviving are two sons, Robert Roney of Pittsburgh and Gerald Roney of Mt. Lebanon; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

H.P. Simmons

H.P. "Newt" Simmons, 77, of Eighty Four, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 1998, in his home. He was born July 19, 1921, in the Allentown section of Pittsburgh, a son of Carl P. and Louise P. Wagner Simmons. Mr. Simmons, a self-employed mechanic, was the owner of H.P. Simmons Garage in Eighty Four. He had lived in the Eighty Four area since 1955 and was a member of Wrights Methodist Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191 of Canonsburg; and American Legion Post 902 of Houston. He also served with the U.S. Army during World War II. On March 4, 1944, he married Grace I. Leppla, who died May 24, 1993. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Cropp of Greentree; seven sons, Wayne Simmons of Eighty Four, Gary R. Simmons of Pittsford, Vt., Barry D. "Booty" Simmons and Terry W. Simmons, both of Eighty Four, and Jerry C. Simmons, Timmy A. Simmons and Jimmy B. Simmons, all of Venetia; 15 grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family. A brother, Carl Simmons, is deceased.

Frances G. Barbe

Frances G. Barbe, 86, of Greensboro R.D.1, died at 8:45 a.m. Sunday, November 8, 1998, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. She was born May 27, 1912, in Washington, a daughter of Sheldon and Gertrude Hughes McClelland. Mrs. Barbe was a 1930 graduate of Trinity High School, Washington. In her early life, she operated a beauty shop in Waynesburg with her sister, Mary. On December 17, 1934, she married Charles A. Barbe Jr., who survives. She resided in Monongahela Township, Greene County, all of her married life. Also surviving are three sons, Mervin L. Barbe of Frederick, Md., Charles A. Barbe III of Rochester, N.Y., and Bruce M. Barbe of Southlake, Texas; two daughters, Eva Louise Miller of Chardon, Ohio, and Judy S. Ross of Greensboro R.D.1; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Klotz of Lakewood, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are two infant brothers and two sisters, Mary Benton and Irene Polen.

Henry Berger
Former Jefferson Township supervisor was coal miner
Henry Berger, 85, of Clarksville (Pitt Gas), died Friday, November 6, 1998, in St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh. He was born December 23, 1912, in Germany, a son of Richard and Emma Clara Teuber Berger. He was a retired coal miner from Gateway Coal Co. and was a Jefferson Township supervisor for two terms. Mr. Berger lived in Pitt Gas for more than 60 years. He was a member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville, United Mine Workers of America, a charter member of Clarksville Volunteer Fire Company and a former member of Sun Valley Hunting Club. On October 22, 1938, he married Mary Simensky, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Henry Berger Jr. of Cary, N.C.; a daughter, Patricia Gavlick of Denver, Colo.; two grandsons, Jason Berger and Douglas Gavlick; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Hilda Hesse of New York City, N.Y. Deceased are a brother, Bernard Berger; and a sister, Freda Hesse.

Julia Brower, 86, of Youngstown, Ohio, died Friday, November 6, 1998, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown. She was born May 21, 1912, in Dunlop, Ohio, a daughter of John and Anna Obshnik Fedorsin. Mrs. Brower was a member of St. Edward Roman Catholic Church of Youngstown and the Greek Catholic Union. Surviving are two brothers, Michael Fedorsin of Las Vegas, Nev., and John Fedorsin of Youngstown; two sisters, Sue Getsinger of Weirton, W.Va., and Margaret Neuman of Youngstown; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Phillip Brower, who died June 20, 1966; and two sisters, Anna Yadrick, who died April 27, 1983, and Mary Lounder, who died October 26, 1983.

Joseph R. Crowell Jr., 53, of Claysville, died Sunday, November 8, 1998, at the VA Medical Center, Aspinwall. He was born March 18, 1945, in Sewickley, a son of Joseph R. Crowell Sr. of McKees Rocks and the late Christina Kessler Crowell. He was employed by Neville Chemical Co., Neville Island. Mr. Crowell was a member of the American Legion in Erie, and he was Catholic. Surviving are four sons, Joseph R. Crowell III of Minneola, Fla., Mark L. Crowell of Claysville, and Michael A. Crowell and Anthony T. Crowell, both of Buchanon, W.Va.; a daughter, Sherry M. Crowell of Westland; four sisters, Christina Bloom of Sheraden, Mary Ann Kohler and Patricia Friend, both of McKees Rocks, and Suzanne Mixter of Crafton; two brothers, Harry Crowell of Triadelphia, W.Va., and William Crowell of Imperial; and a granddaughter, Natoria Crowell.

Ernest DeHaas II
Dentist and civic leader
Dr. Ernest P. DeHaas II, 78, of Uniontown, died Sunday, November 8, 1998, in Cherry Tree Nursing Center, Uniontown. He was born January 7, 1920, in Smithfield, a son of Dr. Ernest P. DeHaas and Sarah Preece DeHaas. He was raised in New Salem, where his father practiced dentistry. He graduated from Uniontown High School in 1937, from Washington and Jefferson College in 1941 and from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dentistry in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a dental officer from 1944 to January 1946. Dr. DeHaas practiced dentistry in Carmichaels from 1946 until his retirement in 1986. During those years, he was on the staff of Greene County Memorial Hospital, was the school dentist for Carmichaels Area School District and was an active member of Fayette County Dental Society. For more than 20 years, Dr. DeHaas served as a member and president of Carmichaels Borough Council and as a member and chairman of Greene County Housing Authority. He was a longtime director of First National Bank of Carmichaels (now Community Bank) and was a director emeritus at the time of his death. He was a member and past president of Rotary Club of Carmichaels. Dr. DeHaas was an active member of Greene Valley Presbyterian Church of Carmichaels, where he served as an elder, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher. He was active in masonic and shrine organizations and was a past master of Fayette Lodge 228 and a 32nd-Degree Mason. In 1991, he moved to Uniontown and became an active member of Uniontown Area YMCA and Trinity United Presbyterian Church, where he ws a member of the session and was a Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Greene County and Uniontown country clubs. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ladonna M. DeHaas; four daughters, Mary Jo Titus of Smyrna, Ga., Kathleen A. Heroux of Colorado Springs, Colo., Barbara Bocchini of Waynesburg and Gretchen L. Love of Mars; three sons, Ernest P. DeHaas III of Uniontown, Richard J. DeHaas of Hopwood and R. Bruce DeHaas of Clarksville; 13 grandchildren, Timothy, Melissa and Megan Titus, Adrienne, Corey, Robert, Kenwyn and Sarah Abigail DeHaas, Julie Waugh, Katie Foster, Christopher Denver, Anthony Bocchini and Joshua Sheets; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Dr. Robert DeHaas of Washington. Deceased are two sisters, Joanne Rush and Mary Jane Burwell.

Eric S. Galbraith, 18, of 216 Grant Street, Canonsburg, died Sunday, November 8, 1998. He was born July 28, 1980, in Washington, a son of Scott and Carol Krull Galbraith of Canonsburg. Eric was a member of the senior class and an honor roll student at Canon-McMillan High School, where he was quarterback of the football team and a member of the basketball team. While in school, he was a member of Students Against Drunk Driving (S.A.D.D.), the "Mac Pack" and the Varsity Club. Eric also was listed in Who's Who Among American High School Students. He was a member of Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are a sister, Amy Galbraith, at home; his paternal grandparents, George and Verna Galbraith of Canonsburg; an uncle; three aunts; and several cousins.

Ewing "Gary" Garofalo, 87, of East Grant Street, Houston, died Saturday, November 7, 1998, in his home. He was born August 10, 1911, in Arensberg, a son of Panfilo and Anna Rubino Garofalo. He was the retired owner and pharmacist of the former Mountford Pharmacy in Houston. Mr. Garofalo was a member of St. Patrick Parish in Canonsburg. He was a 1930 graduate of Brownsville High School and a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. In July 1945, he married Selma Skirble, who died May 27, 1985. Surviving are a sister, Louise Zammerilla of Uniontown; a brother, William Garofalo of Uniontown; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Dr. Ralph Garofalo, Roger Garofalo and Dr. Carl Garofalo; and two sisters, Philomena DeMichele and Adeline Garofalo.

Gloria Anne Jenkins, 67, of Scenery Hill, died Sunday, November 8, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. She was born October 2, 1931, in Charleroi, a daughter of Ralph W. and Hazel Anna Sutherland Burke. Mrs. Jenkins was postmistress at Richeyville District Post Office before retiring in 1993. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Crowson of Brownsville and Susan Devore of Washington; a son, Herbert M. Jenkins of Eighty Four; and four grandchildren, Lori Jenkins, Audra Shwallon, Matthew L. Crowson and Andrew T. Jenkins. Deceased are her husband, Herbert H. Jenkins, who died April 29, 1972; a grandson, Terry C. Hewitt Jr., who died May 18, 1997; a sister, Dorothy I. Helen S. Kapty, 82, of Donora, died Sunday, November 8, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. She was born January 6, 1916, in Donora, a daughter of Stanislaus and Emilia Wilk Kucia. Mrs. Kapty was a homemaker and a member of Our Lady of the Valley Church, Donora. She also was a member of Donora Senior Citizens Center. Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Manko of Donora, Mitzie White of Fraser, Mich., and Mary Frances Babich of Monongahela; two sisters, Stella Kohut of Monessen and Frances Haywood of Rossiter; a brother, Richard Kucia of Donora; six grandchildren, Patricia and Eric Manko, Monique, Tina and Kim White and Michael Babich; and two great-grandchildren. William B. Lahew
WWII, Korean War veteran was coal miner
William Blair Lahew, 87, of Rogersville, died at 7:25 p.m. Friday, November 6, 1998, in Wilson Personal Care Home, Rogersville. He was born November 23, 1910, in Franklin Township, Greene County, a son of David T. and Helen Belford Lahew. Mr. Lahew spent his entire life in Greene County and was Protestant. He was a World War II and Korean conflict veteran, serving with the U.S. Army. He worked as a coal miner at various mines before retiring in 1972. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793 of Waynesburg, Waynesburg Moose Lodge 461 and United Mine Workers of America Local 6330. Mr. Lahew was twice married. His first wife, Margaret Dillenger Lahew, is deceased. His second wife, Gertrude Cox Lahew, whom he married March 8, 1940, died May 23, 1995. Surviving are five daughters, Connie Loughman of Sycamore R.D.1, Joanne Medlick of Mather, Carolyn Mankey of Prosperity, Pamela Jane Lahew of Holbrook and Lee Ann Rohrer of Florida; four sons, William Jack Lahew of Paducah, Ky., Stanley David Lahew of Cameron, W.Va., Jeffrey Blair Lahew of Waynesburg R.D.5 and Terry Varner of Marietta, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert E. Mildred A. McCreight

Mildred Ann McCreight, 39, of East Washington Borough, died Saturday, November 7, 1998, in her home following a long battle with cancer. She was born December 4, 1958, in Canonsburg Hospital, a daughter of M. Glynn and Alice Chambers McAnulty of Denbo, Centerville Borough. Mrs. McCreight grew up on the family farm in Denbo. She graduated from Bethlehem-Center High School in 1976 and from Penn State University in 1980. She participated in a dairy operation with her father until August 22, 1981, when she married John W. McCreight, who survives. She worked in the luggage department of J.C. Penney Inc. Department Store, Washington Mall, and in the dairy operations of Sam and Beverly Minor near The Spring House. In 1994, she established and had operated until the time of her death Mildred A. McCreight Bookshop in East Washington at the corner of East Beau Street and South Wade Avenue. Mrs. McCreight had a lifelong interest in entomology and worked in mounting and preserving insects at Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh. She was a musician and played sousaphone and baritone horn with the National Band of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Post 47, Uniontown. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Denbo until her marriage, when she became a member of The Church of the Covenant, Presbyterian, U.S.A., Washington. In addition to her husband and parents, surviving are a son, John McAnulty McCreight; a daughter, Amanda Rose McCreight; two brothers, Thomas Glynn McAnulty of Denbo and Bruce Eric McAnulty of Bentleyville; two sisters, Vera Sue McAnulty of Edgewood, Allegheny County, and Virginia Jane McAnulty of Oakland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Evelyn Mae Miller
Former Chrysler Corp. employee born in Crucible
Evelyn Mae Miller, 78, of Belleville, Mich., died Friday, November 6, 1998, in Botsford Hospital, Michigan. She was born May 11, 1920, in Crucible, a daughter of John and Mary Pearl Dayton Dukate. She was a secretary and clerk for Chrysler Corp. in Michigan for 27 years. On October 18, 1939, she married Charles D. Miller, who died July 11, 1966. Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Joan Schultz of Spokane, Wash., and Susan Carol Banners of Belleville; a stepson, Charles D. Miller Jr. of Mokina, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, James Dukate of Stanton, Va.; and a sister, Ruth McDowell of Clarksville. Deceased, in addition to her husband, are three brothers, Earl and Ralph Dukate and John Dukate Jr.

Jonathon Riggle
Ohio teen enjoyed sports
Jonathon J.N. Riggle, 14, of 5540 Manchester North, North Lawrence, Ohio, formerly of Galion, Ohio, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday, November 6, 1998, in Children's Medical Center of Akron, Ohio, as a result of injuries sustained in an accidental shooting. He was born February 20, 1984, in Pittsburgh, a son of John W. Riggle of North Lawrence and Lynda Wolfe Ditty of Galion. He attended North Elementary School in Galion and was attending North West High School in Canal Fulton, Ohio, at the time of his death. He was a member of Community Bible Baptist Church, Mansfield, Ohio. He enjoyed several sports, including baseball, football and bowling. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his stepfather, Gary Ditty of Galion; his grandparents, Linda Wolfe of Lexington, Ohio, Newton and Virginia Riggle of Claysville and Alva and Georgia Ditty of Mansfield; a brother, Joshua R. Riggle of North Lawrence; and four sisters, Alicia N., Joyce A. and Janet L. Ditty, all of Galion, and Michelle Riggle of Prosperity. His grandfather, James Wolfe, is deceased.

Harold Shaffer

Harold Shaffer, 82, of Wildwood, Fla., died Tuesday, November 3, 1998, in Franklin Care Center, Waynesburg. He was born April 20, 1916, in Willard, W.Va., a son of Harry Sears and Eva Lena Spring Shaffer. Mr. Shaffer retired as a coal miner from Consolidation Coal Co. Mine No. 32 in Owings, W.Va. A former resident of Shinnston, W.Va., he had made his home in Florida since 1966. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Shinnston, where he had served as a deacon. Mr. Shaffer was a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army in England. On January 31, 1935, he married Virginia Frances Burnett Shaffer, who died December 3, 1994. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley M. Pickett of Leesburg, Fla., and Judith A. Johnson of Oxford, Fla.; a son, Charles H. Shaffer of Crucible; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Eleanor Smallridge of Bethlehem, W.Va. Deceased are a brother, James W. Shaffer; two sisters, Roxanna Sturms and Bernice Miller; a grandson, Thomas H. Pickett Jr.; and a great-granddaughter. Services and interment will be held in Florida.

John H. Thomas, 72, of Newtown, Dilliner, died Friday, November 6, 1998, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. He was born March 21, 1926, in Nemacolin, a son of John and Ann Marie Baytouf Thomas. He was a retired miner from Bobtown Mine and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Thomas was a member of United Mine Workers of America, and he was Catholic. Surviving are two sisters, Mary Belle "Bebe" Roebuck of Bobtown and Marge Kurilko of Cape Coral, Fla. A sister, Virginia Kurilko, is deceased.

Lena P. Wilkins, 91, of Mt. Morris, died at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 1998, in Smithley Personal Care Home, Mt. Morris. She was born July 17, 1907, in Sardis, W.Va., a daughter of Thomas and Leona Martin Davis. Mrs. Wilkins lived her early life in West Virginia, but the majority of her life was spent in Mt. Morris. She worked at Sundale Nursing Home in Morgantown, W.Va., as a nurse's aide for 10 years. She also was a homemaker. Her husband, Arch S. Wilkins Sr., died March 26, 1960. Surviving are three sons, Ray Wilkins of Hamilton, Ohio, Arch Wilkins Jr. of Westover, W.Va., and Lawrence "Buck" Wilkins of Mt. Morris; five daughters, Maxine Turner of McMilville, Tenn., Mary Ellen Kerns and Evelyn Rose, both of Mt. Morris, Jean Neer of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., and Linda Huggins of Davistown; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Esther Furman of Mt. Morris. E. Richard Bednarski, 64, of Hopewell Township, died at home Wednesday, September 30, 1998, following a nine-month illness. He was born August 12, 1934, in Hopewell Township, a son of Mike and Katherine Wozniak Bednarski. Mr. Bednarski was a 1952 graduate of Trinity High School and was Catholic. He was a lifelong dairy farmer at Bednarski Farms, and had received the Jaycees Outstanding Young Farmer Award, the Conservationist of the Year Award and the Dairy of Distinction Award. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Holstein Association, National Holstein Association and Polish Club. On April 19, 1958, he married Dolores Koski, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Richard M. Bednarski and a daughter, Andrea Bednarski, both of Hopewell Township; a brother, Walter Bednarski of Washington; six sisters, Bertha Ermacoff, Loretta Yanavich and Pearl Legerski, all of Washington, Frances Hartline of Rayland, Ohio; Alice McVay of Prosperity and Marjorie Temple of West Middletown; and a granddaughter, Katie L. Bednarski. Deceased are a son, Ronald Bednarski; and a brother, John Bednarski.

Olive F. Plants Butler, 81, of East 26th Street, Ashtabula, Ohio, died Monday, September 28, 1998, in Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio. She was born March 22, 1917, in Eighty Four, a daughter of Oliver B. and Laura C. Morrison Black. She had lived in Ashtabula the past six months, previously living in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., and in Ebensburg. Mrs. Butler was a member of New Smyrna Beach United Church of Christ and a past member of the First Christian Church in Ebensburg and First Christian Church in Washington. She was a court stenographer for Washington and Cambria counties for 27 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Pennsylvania Court Reporters Association, New Smyrna Beach Chapter 3 Order of Eastern Star, New Smyrna Beach Garden Club and a past member of Ebensburg Betterment Council. Mrs. Butler served as president of the Ebensburg chapter of Dale Carnegie Leadership Training and was a published author, writing "By Order of the Court." She enjoyed flower gardening, sewing and art. Surviving are her husband, retired Lt. Col. Robert P. Butler; four children, H. James Plants Jr. of Hillsboro, Ohio, Martha Clark Kampf of Rome Township, Ohio, Mary Jo Simpson of Sanford, Fla., and Betti R. Zullo of Salisbury, Md.; three stepchildren, James E. Louis A. Chuey, 49, formerly of Houston, died Tuesday, September 29, 1998, in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Pittsburgh, following a lengthy illness. Born April 23, 1949, in Houston, he was a son of Andrew and Mary Gamble Chuey. Mr. Chuey was a graduate of Trinity High School and had received a bachelor's degree in business management from the University of Maryland. He was a former accountant in Maryland and was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served with the U.S. Navy for four years. Surviving are two brothers, Russell Chuey of Scenery Hill and Robert J. Chuey of Houston; a sister, Helen Cipolone of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a sister, Mary Louise Chuey Panchura.

She was active as a member and volunteer at Waynesburg Senior Citizens Center and was a member of Harveys Grange. In 1977, she married J. Russell Morris, who is deceased. Ross and Oma Weimer Garrison. She graduated from Waynesburg College in 1935, where she was a member of Theta Pi sorority. While at Waynesburg, she met her husband, William C. Paul. Mrs. Paul was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Apollo, and taught school in Waynesburg and Apollo for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Amanda Neff of Akron; and a son, Robert G. Paul of Loveland, Colo.; two grandsons, two great-granddaughters and one great-grandson. Deceased are her husband; a sister, Helen Malarick; and a brother, William W. Garrison.

Michael E. Angotti, 91, of Abromaitis Street, Bentleyville, died Thursday, October 8, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals, Canonsburg. He was born April 3, 1907 in Oliver, Fayette County, a son of Pasquale and Maria Carricato Angotti. Mr. Angotti was a member of Ave Maria Parish, St. Clements Church, Ellsworth. He was a barber in Bentleyville for more than 60 years and was also employed at The Meadows as a cashier for 14 years. He was a member of the Barbers Union and a member and past president of the former Bentleyville School Board. He also was a member of Bentworth School Board. Mr. Angotti was secretary and treasurer of the former Bentleyville Moose Lodge for many years. On February 25, 1935, he married Helen Verosko, who died August 29, 1978. Surviving are a daughter, Constance Salvitti of Washington; a son, Michael G. Angotti of Aeia, Hawaii; a brother, Lewis P. Angotti of Ellsworth; two sisters, Rose Adams of Pittsburgh and Mary Kusky of Huntington Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren, E. He was born November 13, 1927, in Beallsville, a son of Hobart M. and Lillian Amos Carroll. Mr. Carroll served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from Bethlehem-Center School District after 12 years of service. Mr. Carroll attended Beallsville United Methodist Church and was a member of American Legion Hancock-McCune-Horne Post 705 and the Miners Club of Richeyville. His wife, Bessie Benner Carroll, died October 21, 1992. Ralph Clelland, 72, of 107 Nice Street, Waynesburg, died Thursday, October 8, 1998, in his residence. He was born October 6, 1926, in Star Junction, a son of George and Elizabeth Morgan Clelland. Mr. Clelland was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was awarded a Purple Heart. A former resident of Fayette County, he resided most of his life in Waynesburg, where he had worked at the Curry Home as a maintenance man, and for the post office as a mail carrier. He later worked at The Meadows for several years. He was a member of Washington Street United Methodist Church in Waynesburg; the James T. Farrell Post 330 of the American Legion; and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4793, Waynesburg. He also was a former member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 461, Waynesburg. Surviving are his wife, Eleanor Marshock Maletta Clelland, whom he married November 16, 1979; a son, David Shane Clelland of New Hampshire; a daughter, Susan Gay Gauthier; three stepchildren, Michael, Georganne and Patty Maletta, all of Rices Landing; four grandchildren; and a brother, Gaylord Clelland of West Middlesex. Deceased are three brothers, George Clelland, David Clelland and Daryl Clelland, who died in infancy; and a sister, Vanetta Lemley.

Donald J. Huggins, 79, of Chandler, Ariz., formerly of Seaford, Del., died July 24, 1998, in Chandler. He resided in Seaford for 32 years before moving to Chandler in October 1997. Mr. Huggins was born in Garards Fort, a son of Glad C. and Emma Beall Huggins. He retired from DuPont in 1980 after 39 years. A World War II veteran with the U.S. Marine Corps, and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Huggins was a Mason for 60 years and served on the board of directors at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Goldie Wilson Huggins; a daughter, Karen Brittingham of Chandler; a son, Roger of Philadelphia; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Opal Reeves of Canonsburg, Elva Phillips of McClellandtown and Betty Henrish of Crucile; and a brother, Floyd Huggins of Connellsville. William E. Shute

William E. Shute, 72, of McDonald, died Friday, October 9, 1998, in Gilchrist Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. He was born October 25, 1925, in Robinson Township, a son of Ludwig and Emilie Detho Shute. Mr. Shute graduated from Penn State University and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was an inspector for the Allegheny County Health Department for 20 years and was past chairman of the Allegheny County Conservation District. He was a farmer. On July 12, 1949, he married Susanna T. Mutton, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary A. Shute of Phoenix, Md.; two grandchildren; five brothers, James of Ashland, Ore., Robert and Richard, both of San Diego, Calif., George of Oberlin, Ohio, and Frank of Sarasota, Fla.; and two sisters, Miriam Fulton of Philadelphia and Alice Bartlett of Sarasota. Frank F. Rodighiero, 92, of Fulton Road, Canonsburg, died Friday, October 9, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born October 18, 1906, in Conco, Provincia DiVencenza, Italy. He came to the U.S. at age 7 to join his parents in Colliers, W.Va. Mr. Rodighiero was a member of St. Patrick Worship Site of St. Patrick Parish, Canonsburg, where he was a member of the Catholic Men's Club and was an usher for more than 35 years. He was a member of Eagles Lodge and the Canonsburg Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Rodighiero was a retired grocer and real estate investor. He opened his first grocery store in Colliers in 1928. His second store followed in Weirton, W.Va., in 1929. After the Depression, he came to Canonsburg and opened The Tiny Store, which was originally at West Pike Street and Strabane Avenue. He built the present store in 1947. Mr. Rodighiero had sponsored many sporting teams in Canonsburg and was a member of the steering committee that formed the Canonsburg Senior Citizens Center, which was first located in the Central Avenue Presbyterian Church. His wife, Irene Velluti, died August 29, 1995. Surviving are two daughters, Sylvia DeFilippo of Canonsburg and Joan Prince of Lake Worth, Fla.; four grandchildren, Frank Prince, Joseph M. DeFilippo, Kim Patterson and Amanda DeFilippo; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia DelPup of Valley Cottage, N.Y. Deceased are a grandchild, Ianne DeFilippo; a brother, Americo Petty; and three sisters, Angeline Stone, Alice Malesardi and Judy Reitter.

Nydia Ruth Applegate, 81, formerly of Monongahela, died Thursday, October 8, 1998, in the EMH Regional Medical Center, Elyria, Ohio. She was born March 20, 1917, in Webster, a daughter of Thomas H. and Catherine Teese Naylor. Mrs. Applegate lived most of her life in the Monongahela area, where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a retired bank teller with the Monongahela office of National City Bank. Surviving are two sisters, Rose Vincent of Elyria and Gwen Morton of Bentleyville; and a brother, Oliver Naylor of Florida. Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Daniel Applegate, who died July 16, 1984; and two brothers, Thomas T. Naylor, who died in 1977, and Joseph O. Naylor, who died in 1964.

She was born January 12, 1911, in Taylorstown, a daughter of Charles E. and Mary W. Waugh Crothers. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Washington and was a graduate of Washington Seminary. Prior to her retirement, she was the secretary/treasurer of the R.G. Johnson Co. Surviving are a brother, Charles J. Crothers of Friendship Village, Upper St. Clair; two sisters, Virginia C. Johnson of Friendship Village and Martha E. "Becky" Knowland of Bennington, Vt.; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and a great-great-niece. A brother, Robert W. Crothers, is deceased. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at Friendship Village at a time to be announced. Hazel Alberta Frye
Lifelong Claysville resident was farmer
Hazel Alberta Frye, 76, of Claysville, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a three-month illness. She was born April 23, 1922, in West Finley Township, a daughter of Gilbert and Hazel Sanders Frye. She had most recently resided at Manor Care Nursing Home, McMurray, and had previously been a lifelong resident of Claysville, where she was a farmer. Miss Frye was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where she had been a member of the choir. She was a member of McGuffey Senior Citizens Center, Claysville, where she participated in dartball, and she attended the Adult Daycare program at Washington County Health Center. She enjoyed music, singing, playing the piano, plants and flowers, baking and spending time with children. Surviving are two brothers, Donald Frye of Conway and Gilbert E. Frye of Claysville; three sisters, Verna Vittek of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, Dolly Grimes of Claysville and Geraldine Calvert of Spraggs; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three sisters, Marjorie Frye, D. Evelyn Pettit and Freda Thomas; and two brothers, Irvin and Herbert Frye.

Joseph Furiga
Served as councilman, mayor in New Eagle
Joseph Furiga, 92, of Tenth Street, Monongahela, formerly of New Eagle, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, in Meade Manor, Monongahela. He was born February 28, 1906, in New Eagle, a son of Siro and Maria Ferrari Furiga. He was a lifelong resident of New Eagle and was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he had served for many years on its church council. Mr. Furiga served the Borough of New Eagle as mayor for 12 years and as a borough councilman for six years. He was appointed to the board of trustees of the former Monongahela Memorial Hospital in 1964, serving as secretary and as a member of the site committee, which established the location of Monongahela Valley Hospital. He had been a member of the board of trustees of Monongahela Valley Hospital since 1972. His 30-year tenure as trustee and director with the health system earned him the Palione Award for dimensions in board leadership in 1995, when he retired from active membership to become member emeritus. Mr. Furiga retired in 1970 after 44 years of service with Combustion Engineering as general foreman of the machine shop. He was a life member of New Eagle Volunteer Fire Department and a member of Arroas Haymakers Association No. 258 1/2 and the Order of Redman, both of New Eagle. He was active in the Optimist Club, Boy Scouts of America and the Monongahela Cemetery Board of Incorporators. He was an avid golfer until the age of 86. Surviving are a daughter, Joanne R. Amoroso of Monongahela; a son, Richard Furiga of Alexandria, Va.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lucy Niccolai of New Eagle and Ann Dipaola of Monongahela. Deceased are his wife, Edith Cain Furiga, who died April 21, 1997; two brothers, Frank and William Furiga; and six sisters, Martha Reale, Pearl DelVitto, Margaret Appolonia, Emma Coligan, Gina Casciani and Mary Furiga.

Joel Edward Stenson
WWII veteran was retired coal miner
Joel Edward Stenson, 77, of Pike Run Drive, Daisytown, died Sunday, October 11, 1998, in Brownsville General Hospital. He was born November 9, 1920, a son of Albert and Veronica Kloc Stenson. Mr. Stenson retired as a coal miner from Crescent Hills Coal Co. and was last employed by Albert's Packing Co., Washington. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church, Daisytown, Peter J. McKean Veterans of Foreign Wars, Daisytown, Centerville American Legion, United Mine Workers of America and Daisytown Athletic Club. Surviving are two sons, William J. and John A. Stenson, both of Daisytown; three grandchildren, Andre, Linda and Dana Stenson; and a brother, George Stenson of Abescon, N.J. His wife, Mary Melinsky Stenson, died November 5, 1997.

Herman N. Torasso
Former Washington man was Sears salesman
Herman N. Torasso, 95, formerly of Washington, died Saturday, October 10, 1998, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Mr. Torasso was a salesman for the automotive department of Sears Roebuck and Co. from 1950 to 1963, and he was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in St. Petersburg. He was married twice. His first wife, Mary Torasso, a former Washington resident, is deceased, and his second wife, Martha Torasso, also from Washington, survives. Also surviving are a son, James Torasso of St. Petersburg; two daughters, Norma Gregoire of Metairie, La., and Kaye Jancaitis of Brandon, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A daughter, Mary Belle Kuntz, is deceased. Arrangements are being handled by Anderson-McQueen Funeral Homes & Cremation Tribute Center, Ninth Street Chapel, St. Petersburg, Fla.

Jack S. Crayne
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
Jack S. Crayne, 77, of Roswell, Ga., died Sunday, October 11, 1998. A native of Pennsylvania, Mr. Crayne served during World War II in the 3rd Army, 94th Infantry Division, and received a Bronze Star. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Smith Crayne; and a niece, Anna Westbrook of Duluth, Ga. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 14, at Green Lawn Cemetery, Roswell.

Janet D. Logue
Retired schoolteacher
Janet D. Logue, 83, of East Finley Drive, Claysville, East Finley Township, died Sunday, October 11, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. She was born December 25, 1914, in Morris Township, a daughter of Calvin and Edna Craft Day. Mrs. Logue was a member of Fairmount United Methodist Church, where she belonged to the United Methodist Women. She was a 1931 graduate of Morris Township High School and a 1935 graduate of Waynesburg College, where she was a member of the Alpha Kappa Phi sorority. Mrs. Logue was a schoolteacher at Joint School, Morris Township, from 1935 to 1936, followed by assignments at Pleasant Grove, Sawhill, Rocky, Stony Point and Lagonda schools. From 1960 until her retirement in 1980, she taught at East-West Finley Elementary School in McGuffey School District. She was a member of Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, Pennsylvania State Education Association and Stony Point Sewing Circle. She served for several years as East Finley Township tax collector during the 1950s. She enjoyed quilting, cooking, baking, sewing and gardening. On August 18, 1938, in Maryland, she married Brady J. Logue, who died October 4, 1994. Surviving are a son, Donald J. Logue of Prosperity; two daughters, Donna Stout of West Alexander and Mary Jo Spina of Claysville; seven grandchildren, Linda Stout West, Tracy Stout, J.O. Stout, Kathy Logue Bedillion, David Logue, Brian Logue and Jeremy Spina; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to her husband and parents, are a son, Robert Logue; a brother, George Day; and four sisters, Hazel Andrew, Phoebe Newman, Eleanor Miller and Mary Muir.

Joseph E. Rahon
WWII vet was a truck driver
Joseph E. Rahon, 87, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of Canonsburg, died Sunday, October 11, 1998, in his home. He was born October 1, 1911, in Canonsburg, a son of John and Eva Antony Rahon. Mr. Rahon was a truck driver for many years and enjoyed dancing. He was Catholic and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Angela Michailides Rahon, died February 1990. Surviving are a brother, Edward Rahon of Canonsburg; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Helen Duda and MaryAnn Koman; and two brothers, John and Steve Rahon. Burial will be Wednesday, October 14, in St. Theodosius Cemetery, Cleveland.

Mario A. Seraly
Retired from U.S. Steel accounting department
Mario A. Seraly, 63, of Rush Avenue, New Eagle, died Friday, October 9, 1998, in West Burlington, Iowa. He was born August 14, 1935, in Donora, a son of the late Stanley "Lallo" Seraly and Fillomena Rangaus Vigliotti. Mr. Seraly lived most of his life in New Eagle and was a member of Transfiguration Church of Monongahela and its Holy Name Society. He served in the U.S. Army. He retired in 1990 with 30 years of service as a timekeeper in the accounting department of U.S. Steel Corp.'s American Bridge Division. Surviving are his wife, Judith Sliger Seraly, with whom he celebrated 42 years of marriage on September 27, 1998; two sons, Anthony Seraly of Eighty Four and David Seraly of Scenery Hill; a daughter, Julie Nickols of Monongahela; two brothers, Guido Seraly of Finleyville and Gary Seraly of Flanders, N.J.; and four grandchildren.

Mary Zubaty
Former nurse's aide at Torrance State Hospital
Mary Mahkovic Zubaty, 82, of Blairsville, died Sunday, October 11, 1998, in Latrobe Area Hospital. She was born October 31, 1915, in Claridge, a daughter of Anton and Mary Shalehar Mahkovic. Mrs. Zubaty was a member of Sts. Simon and Jude Roman Catholic Church, Blairsville. She was a Slovenian polka fan. She was employed as a nurse's aide at Torrance State Hospital prior to her retirement in 1973. Surviving are two sons, John Zubaty of Wingate, N.C., and Ron Zubaty of Washington; a daughter, Janice Stets of Brenizer; five grandchildren, Robert, Laurie, Neal, Leslie and Aaron Zubaty; a brother, Joseph Mahkovic of Irwin; two sisters, Ann Reid of Lorain, Ohio, and Rose Rudy of Amherst, Ohio. Her husband, John F. Zubaty, died April 5, 1994, and her son, Edward Zubaty, died in 1996.

Mabel E. Brottish
Lifelong resident of Jefferson
Mabel E. Brottish, 80, of Jefferson R.D.1, died Tuesday, October 13, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. She was born February 14, 1918, a daughter of Levi and Margaret Rinehart. Mrs. Brottish was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Jefferson. On March 14, 1941, she married John W. Brottish Sr., who died March 29, 1988. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Kay Brottish of Crucible; a son, John W. Brottish Jr. of Mather; four grandchildren, John W. Brottish III, Christine Savchuk, Brian and Nicole Brottish; and a great-granddaughter. Deceased are three brothers, Raymond, Roy and Clarence Rinehart.

Rosemary A. Clutter
Ware inspector for Ball Glass
Rosemary Alberta Clutter, 70, of Henderson Avenue, Washington, died at 10:30 a.m. October 12, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She had been ill since March 25, 1998. She was born August 19, 1928, in Bellevue, Ohio, a daughter of George and Alberta Stockmaster Pirrung. Mrs. Clutter had been employed as a ware inspector for Ball Glass prior to her retirement Surviving are a son, Donald E. Clutter Jr. of Washington; three daughters, Linda L. Reedy of Washington, Nancy Marley of McKees Rocks and Deborah Dawn Wright of Chouteau, Okla.; a sister, Lila Arnell of Washington; five grandchildren, Robert W. and Carnella Reedy, Nicole and Justin Wright and Tina Marley; and two great-grandchildren.

Robert S. DeLegge
Retired welder and former Lions Club member
Robert S. DeLegge, 72, of Carroll Township, died Monday, October 12, 1998, in Mon Valley Hospital. He was born August 13, 1926, in Monessen, a son of Phillip and Angelina Matozzi DeLegge. Mr. DeLegge was a retired welder, having worked for Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp. in Monessen and was an U.S. Navy veteran, having served in World War II. He was Catholic and a member and past president of the former Carroll Township Lions Club. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Esther Goddard DeLegge; three daughters, Gerrie Shire of Monessen, Denise Hallam of Library and Yvonne Chandler of Chalfont; a brother, David DiLegge of Ellicot City, Md.; a sister, Dorothy Coulson of Belle Vernon; and two grandchildren, Robert Grounds and Blake Hallam. Deceased are a sister, Sarah DiLegge, and a brother, Albert DiLegge.

John W. Holmes
U.S. Army veteran of World War II
John W. Holmes, 74, of Washington, died Sunday, October 11, 1998, in his home. He was born April 10, 1924. Mr. Holmes served in the U.S. Army during World War II, operating a tank, and is a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 927. Surviving are three sons, John Wilson Holmes Jr. of Youngstown, Ohio, Charles R. Holmes and David W. Holmes, both of Florida; a daughter, Barbara Ann Holmes of Florida; and three stepchildren, Gerald Malcolm and Donald Mundell and Elizabeth Noreen Johnson. He made his home with Linda Fonner.

Josephine E. Mathis, 60, of Wilkinsburg, died Monday, October 12, 1998, in St. Francis Medical Center, Pittsburgh. She was born April 3, 1938, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Susie Patterson Fullum of Canonsburg and the late Bruce Fullum. She formerly had worked as a presser for Peter Pan Cleaners and as an aide at the Washington County Home. Surviving are two daughters, Dawn Rena Younger of Erie and Christine Elizabeth Mathis of Pittsburgh; two brothers, Glenn Fullum of Carlsbad, Calif., and Clarence Fullum of Canonsburg; and a sister, Doris Fullum of Canonsburg. She formerly was married to Richard Mathis of Washington.

Dorothy L. Nelson
Member of Bentleyville United Methodist Church
Dorothy L. Nelson, 89, of Francis Street, Bentleyville, died at 1:54 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born June 6, 1909, in Ellsworth, a daughter of Adolph and Jennie A. Sonnie Nelson. Miss Nelson was an active member of Bentleyville United Methodist Church, joining the church in 1925, where she had served as Sunday school superintendent. She also taught Sunday school for more than 60 years. She was also past treasurer of Elizabeth class and the church school, and past financial secretary of the church. She served on the administrative board, Pastor Parish Committee, commission on education and council of ministries. Miss Nelson was a retired schoolteacher for the former Bentleyville and Bentworth school districts, having taught English and math for 42 years. While serving as a teacher, she sponsored the Future Teachers Club, Book Club, Dramatic Club, and coached many senior class plays and class night programs. She was a 1927 graduate of Bentleyville High School, received her bachelor's degree of Science and Education in 1931 from California University of Pennsylvania. She attended Duke University, received her master's degree in education from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951. Miss Nelson was a life member of National Education Association, Pennsylvania State Education Association, the Washington County chapter of Pennsylvania School Retirees, Pennsylvania Council of Mathematics Teachers, a life member of the University of California University Alumni Association, a member of Bentworth Senior Citizens, the Golden Agers Club, past treasurer of the Travel Club of the Bentworh Senior Citizens, past treasurer of Bentleyville Public Library Club, past treasurer of Bentleyville Public Library and served as treasurer of the Bentleyville sesquicentennial celebration in 1966. Surviving are a brother, Lawrence A. Nelson of Santa Monica, Calif.; many nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are two sisters, Edith Snyder and Mildred Anderson; and three brothers, Richard, William A. and James Gilbert Nelson.

Julia K. Rocco, 85, of Beallsville Road, Bentleyville, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 1998, in Golden Moments Personal Care Home, Mather. She was born April 16, 1913, in Oliphant Furnace, a daughter of Wasyl and Eva Kotcher. She was a member of the Ave Maria Parish, Bentleyville. She enjoyed cooking, baking and gardening. Surviving are a son, Charles Richard Rocco of Germantown, Tenn.; two daughters, Marian Mazutis of Bentleyville and Lillian Bercosky of Marianna; five grandchildren, Wendy Mazutis Spicer, Amy Mazutis, Rob and Chad Bercosky and Richard Rocco; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Tony Kotcher of Bentleyville; a sister, Rose Ulisky of Bentleyville; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Anthony Rocco, who died July 7, 1963; and two sisters, Ann Kotcher and Mary Novakovic.

Chester C. Tarr
Worked in glass industry for 35 years
Chester C. Tarr, 82, of Waynesburg Road, Washington, died at 5:25 p.m. Tuesday, October 13, 1998, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington, and had been in failing health for the past two years. He was born November 23, 1915, in Washington, a son of Chester B. and Sadie Harmon Tarr. Mr. Tarr was a member of Christian and Missionary Alliance Church and had attended Washington schools. He was a machine specialist having been employed at Hazel-Atlas Glass Co. Plants 1 and 2 in Washington, Midland Glass in New Jersey and Chattanooga Glass in Keyser, W.Va. He had been employed for 35 years in the glass industry. On August 23, 1941, he married Gayle Kiger, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Gary M. Tarr of Washington; a brother, Arthur Tarr of Uba City, Calif.; and two grandsons, J. Gregory and Brian M. Tarr. Deceased are three brothers, Clarence, James O., and Charles Tarr; and three sisters, Thelma Allen, Laura Miller and Florence Gregg.

Lee R. Walker
Flew 70 missions during World War II
Lee R. Walker, 76, one of the original enlisted U.S. Air Force pilots during World War II, died Thursday, September 24, 1998, at his residence in Shalimar, Fla. Mr. Walker retired as a chief master sergeant. He was born March 29, 1922, in Hickory, a son of the late Harry B. and Bena Miller Walker. He attended Hickory High School and graduated in 1940. Surviving are his wife, Beatrice V. Walker; three daughters, Kelly Wells of Melbourne, Fla., Carol Hayes of Salt Lake City, Utah, and Linda Gates of Niceville, Fla.; two sons, Paul Walker of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and Steven Walker of Shalimar; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Willa Dowler of Midway and Freda Zeigler of McDonald; five brothers, Wilbert and Jay Walker of Hickory, William Walker of New Lexington, Ohio, Fred Walker of Cross Creek and Raymond Walker of Weirton, W.Va. Mr. Walker flew 70 missions with the 153rd Liaison Squadron in the European Theater during World War II. He later declined a commission and joined the maintenance unit. After numerous assignments, a tour of Vietnam and a few other assignments, he retired from the 33rd TFW at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., in March 1977. He enjoyed more than 21 years of retirement. Mr. Walker's wishes for cremation will be carried out and a private ceremony will be held at a later date. Any donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or any local hospice.
