Samuel Yukich, 81, of Kings Ridge Terrace, Deltona, Fla., died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Memorial Hospital-West Volusia, Deland, Fla. He was born May 15, 1916, in Farrell, and was a former superintendent of Washington Steel. Surviving are his wife, Helen Yukich; three daughters, Darlene Clark of Miami Beach, Frances Dunlop of Winter Haven and Connie Noell of Deltona, all of Florida.; a son, S. James Yukich of Santa Rosa, Calif.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Frank Yukich of Hermitage and Joe Yukich of Farrell.

Jean S. Hassler, 76, of Lone Pine, died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born December 31, 1921, in Studa (Cross Creek), a daughter of Albert R. and Mary J. Sterling. She was married to Charles A. Hassler, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Curt C. Hassler; one daughter, Robin J. Mullins; one brother, William Kyluck; one sister, Norma Wincek; and two grandchildren, Lea and Jacque Hassler. Deceased is a sister, Mary Johns.

Blanche V. Liming

Blanche Varner Liming, 82, of Route 1, Core, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in her home. She was born March 2, 1916, in Days Run, W.Va., a daughter of John Webster and Leona Belle Tennant Varner. Mrs. Liming was a member of Olive United Methodist Church. Surviving are three brothers, Donald Varner of Wind Ridge, Robert Varner of Florida and Merle Varner of Youngstown, Ohio; seven sisers, Frances Copeland of Core, Ola Willard of Fairview, W.Va., Mary Price of Youngstown, Maxine Norris of Youngstown, Emma Thomas of Sycamore, Betty J. Morris of Waynesburg and Nelli Isner of Elkins; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, Ralph Liming, who died February 8, 1990; two brothers, Marvin Varner and George Varner; and two sisters, Gladys Moore and Lillian Funk.

Opal M. Michaels
Award-winning athlete formerly of Washington
Opal M. Michaels, 74, of Okeechobee, Fla., died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Columbia Raulerson Hospital. She was born October 9, 1923, in Commercial Point, Ohio, a daughter of Rex and Ada Carfrey. Mrs. Michaels was a seasonal resident of Okeechobee since 1986 and became a permanent resident in 1995. She had been a resident of Washington for 27 years. A good athlete who appeared in six national basketball championships and in three national softball championships, she received an outstanding female athlete award from Ohio State University. She also was a secretary, store manager and homemaker. Surviving are her husband of 27 years, Dr. Adlai E. Michaels; a son, Michael J. Pavisich of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; two grandchildren, Michael E. and Debra L. Pavisich; and two sisters, Beulah Justus and Sylia Kintigh, both of Beverly Hills, Fla.

E. Christine Noble
Member of Laboratory Presbyterian Church
E. Christine Noble, 85, of Washington, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born March 14, 1913, in Washington, a daughter of Albert and Lilly Courson Horn. Mrs. Noble attended Pancake School. She was a homemaker and had also worked in the cafeteria at the Pancake school. She was a member of Laboratory Presbyterian Church, Washington Area Senior Citizens and enjoyed quilting and crafts. On August 28, 1936, she married James C. Noble, who died in 1968. Surviving are a son, James R. Noble of Munhall; two daughters, Helen L. Moore of Fredericktown and Ruth E. Hill of Beallsville; a sister, Mary W. Horn of Washington; eight grandchildren, William Moore, Jack Hill, Holly Moore, Christy Rohrer, Mary Zuchowski, Thomas Hill, and James and Lisa Noble; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Lola J. Horn; and a grandson, Douglas E. Moore.

Andrew J. Reposky
U.S. Marine Corps veteran received Purple Heart
Andrew J. Reposky, 74, of Carmichaels, died unexpectedly at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born November 30, 1923, in Newboro, Fayette County, a son of John and Barbara Yunga Repasky. Mr. Reposky had resided in Carmichaels since 1948. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was wounded in action in the Battle of Guam in the South Pacific. He received the Purple Heart for his injuries. He was a member of Cumberland American Legion Post 400 of Carmichaels, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491 of Carmichaels, a life member of Disabled American Veterans Unit 123 of Waynesburg, a life member of the Third Marine Division Association and a member of Carmichaels Senior Center. On October 12, 1948, he married Dawn Glover Reposky, who survives. Also surviving are two nephews, Andrew J. Reposky and Carl Levock; and a niece, Cecelia Levock. Deceased are a brother, John Reposky; and a sister, Mary Levock.

Genevieve C. Savanick

Genevieve C. Savanick, 88, of Carmichaels, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Grace Hospital, Amherst, Ohio. She was born September 8, 1909, in Brooklyn, N.Y., a daughter of Joseph F. and Katherine Machnacka Lencewicz. Mrs. Savanick was a member of St. Hugh Church of Carmichaels. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Dragan of Elyria, Ohio; a son, Andrew Savanick Jr. of Coraopolis; seven grandchildren; and a brother, Walter Lencewicz of Carmichaels. Deceased are her husband, Andrew Savanick, who died in 1969; and a brother, Joseph Lencewicz. Services are private. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Crucible.

Earl F. Stilwell

Earl F. Stilwell, 78, of Third Street, Washington, died at 5:57 p.m. Monday, April 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born December 20, 1919, in Marianna, a son of Frank and Jessie Barr Stilwell. Mr. Stilwell was a member of Keystone Baptist Temple. He had worked at Washington Mould and Foundry from 1969 until 1980, and prior to that was a bartender at Nightcap Lounge. Mr. Stilwell was a member of Alpine Star Lodge 9 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Hawkins Post Home 927. During World War II, he served in the 70th Division in the European, Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He was awarded the European, African-Middle Eastern Ribbon, American Defense Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon and Good Conduct Medal. He was twice married. On January 12, 1946, he married Stacy Fisher, who is deceased. On May 17, 1970, he married Nellie Jane Sartoski Deems, who died January 11, 1997. Surviving are five sons, Russell Wolfe of Louisville, Ky., David Stilwell of Marianna, Edward Stilwell of Aurora, Ohio, Earl Stilwell Jr. of Streetsboro, Ohio, and Edgar Stilwell of Washington; two daughters, Priscilla Armstrong of Slovan and Nancy McConnell of Bavington; a brother, Donald Blair Stilwell of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Deceased are two great-grandchildren; a brother, Roy Stilwell; and two sisters, Loretta and Erma.

Harold M. Villers

Harold Marshall Villers, 59, of Fayette Street, Washington, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, following a brief illness. He was born July 14, 1938, in Washington, a son of Margaret Crile Villers Kelly of Largo, Fla., and the late Fred M. Villers. Mr. Villers attended Trinity High School and served in the Air Force from 1955 to 1959. He was employed by Plasteel Products from 1964 to 1986 and had been employed at Ross Mould since 1987. Mr. Villers was a life member of the Polish Club and was a member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 22. On December 3, 1960, he married Frances Bongiovanni, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Kathy Watts of Claysville; a brother, Thomas Villers of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, JoAnn Simon of Clearwater, Fla.; two grandsons, Chuckie and Christopher Watts; and several nieces and nephews; Deceased is a brother, Donald E. Villers.

Pearl Anna Crowe Wheeler, 72, of Mounts Road, Washington, died unexpectedly at 9:50 p.m. Monday, April 20, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born April 1, 1926, in Ohio County, West Virginia, a daughter of McKinley P. "Doc" and Martha Elizabeth Amos Crowe. Mrs. Wheeler was employed as a dishwasher at Club 40 Restaurant for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, bingo, traveling and enjoyed being with her family. On April 11, 1969, she married Lloyd Wheeler, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Maybelle "Dolly" Alderson of Washington, daughter of Pete Borsos; Martha Ann "Marti" Beecham of Lone Pine and Sheila "Kay" Wheeler of West Alexander, daughters of Demas Frazee of Lone Pine; and Zella Jo Wheeler of Washington, daughter of Lloyd Wheeler; two brothers, John Crowe of Washington and another brother, address unknown; three sisters, Mary Jane Johnson of Washington, Estelle "Suzy" Latshaw of Bulger and Martha Guiddy of Weirton, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren, Mark Samuel Paletta, Michael Demas Paletta, Samantha Ann-Elizabeth Beecham, Amanda Victoria Beecham, Sheila Ann Moses, Franklin R. JoAnn V. Blodgett, 83, of Bethel Park, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born June 29, 1914, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Mario and Josephine Sanguini Prosperi. Mrs. Blodgett was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Bethel Park, and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Surviving are her husband, Nile E. Blodgett; a daughter, Charelle Breen of New Port Richey, Fla.; two sons, Richard Blodgett of Atlanta, Ga., and Douglass Blodgett of Pittsburgh; nine grandchildren, Scott, Todd, Jennifer, Alexyss, Mark, Debra and Richard Blodgett Jr., Kimberly Trbovich, and John Breen Jr.; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rosella J. Cagni, 78, of Peters Township, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. She was born September 20, 1919, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Joseph ahd Theresa Parenti Cagni. Mrs. Cagni was a member of St. Benedict the Abbot Roman Catholic Church, McMurray. Surviving are a sister, Cecelia L. Cagni of Peters Township; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Dolores McLaughlin; and a brother, Alfred Cagni.

Albert D. "Al" Metzner Sr., 82, of Jean Circle, Tampa, Fla., died at 8:32 p.m. Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Canonsburg General Hospital. He had a summer home at Lakeside Drive, Canonsburg, and offices at 14 East Wylie Avenue, Washington He was born September 27, 1915, in Washington County, a son of Robert Michael and Minnie J. Thomas Metzner. Mr. Metzner was owner of Al Metzner Realty from 1946 to 1996 and Al Metzner Motors from 1946 to 1966. He was former president of Pennsylvania Industrial Bankers Association; former president and co-founder of Tylerdale Civic Betterment League for 10 years; a former member of the board of directors of Washington Chamber of Commerce; former Washington chairman of the March of Dimes; former member of Washington County executive board of the March of Dimes National Foundation for 18 years and county vice chairman of the board, and former Washington city chairman of the National Foundation of the March of Dimes. Mr. Metzner was also former chairman of Washington County Child Welfare Board; former president of Washington Optimist Club; former lieutenant governor of Optimist International of Pennsylvania; a life member of the Washington Elks; a member of Harrisburg Moose; former Democratic member of Washington city council and temporary interim mayor of the city of Washington; the Democratic nominee for the 47th Legislative District in 1968, and former member of Washington County Democratic Executive Committee. In 1936, he married Dora Johnston, who died 1961. Surviving are a son, A. David Metzner of Tampa, Fla., and Canonsburg; three grandchildren, Michael of San Diego, Calif., Michelle Metzner Boylan of Tampa and Dr. Mark Metzner of Dana Point, Calif. He made his home with Marge Chuppetta of Canonsburg. Deceased are a brother, George M. Metzner; and a sister, Mary L. Metzner.

William E. Metz
Retired from Immaculate Conception maintenance
William E. Metz, 59 of Michigan Avenue, Washington, died at midnight Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in the Greenery Rehabilitation Center, following a brief illness. He was born May 26, 1938, in Greene County, a son of Lillian Rush Metz Jones of Bethesda, Ohio, and the late Harold Merle Metz. Mr. Metz was a member of Taylorstown Presbyterian Church. He had been employed in maintenance at Immaculate Conception Church prior to his retirement. On September 6, 1958, he married Janet Yvonne Rice, who survives. Also surviving, in addition to his mother, are a son, John Metz at home; three daughters, Sue Ellen Cullen of Washington, Kimberly Ann Marchetii of Canonsburg and Karen Baumgardner of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, Robert Metz of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Kiddle of Detroit, Mich.; four grandchildren, Heather Lynn, William Jake and Amanda Sue Metz and Kimberly C. Raymond L. Pounds
B-24 bomber pilot was German P.O.W. in WWII
Raymond L. Pounds, 82, of 149 Smithfield Street, Canonsburg, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Washington Hospital. Mr. Pounds was born October 16, 1915, in McDonald, a son of Edward and Emma Saintenoy Pounds. He spent most of his life in Canonsburg and attended school in Burgettstown and Canonsburg. After working for eight years in local coal mines, he enlisted in the Air Force in 1942, where he was a first lieutenant heavy bomber pilot. His B-24 Bomber was hit by enemy fire, caught fire and exploded during a bombing run. After parachuting, he was captured and was a German P.O.W. for 11 months. Upon release he was awarded several medals, including a purple heart. Mr. Pounds, prior to his retirement in 1978, was employed by the Canonsburg office of the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier for 341/2 years. He was also a drummer for the Air Force P.O.W. Band. He played with the Lee Barrett Orchestra as the original drummer, and the Johnny Cimino Orchestra, Bobby Vinton Orchestra, Art Hannen Big Band and various other combos. He was also a part-time bus driver for Canon-McMillan School District for eight years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 863 of Canonsburg and the American Legion of Washington. In 1946 he married Dorothy Strehar Pounds, who died February 28, 1994. He later married Mary Ellen Hanley, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, David Pounds of Apple Valley, Minn., and James Pounds of Meadow Lands; a sister, Marie Imperatore of Canonsburg; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a son, Ray Pounds; two brothers, William and Edward Pounds; and a sister, Violet Moran.

Maxine Grim Stewart
Teacher in Washington County and West Virginia
Maxine Grim Stewart, 90, of Wheeling, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at Wheeling Hospital. She was born October 13, 1907, in Washington, daughter of Samuel B. and Annabell Moore Grim. Mrs. Stewart was a longtime teacher in Washington County and in Ohio County, W.Va., where she retired from Ritchie School in Wheeling. She was a member of the Warwood Methodist Church, Wheeling, and a member of the Claysville Chapter of the Eastern Star. She received her associate degree in education from Washington and Jefferson College. Her husband, Charles L. Stewart, is deceased. Surviving are two sons, Robert of Philadelphia and William of Haymarket, Va.; three grandchildren, Ellen L. Stewart, Leah B. Stewart and Laura S. Stewart. Deceased are a brother, Harold Grim and a sister, Dorothy Rhodes.

Stace Wilson
Carnegie Gas retiree from Daybrook, W.Va.
Stace Wilson, 88, of Daybrook, W.Va., died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Monongalia General Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. He was born May 10, 1909, in Days Run, a son of Ulysses Grant and Mary Shriver Wilson. He was a member of Daybrook Church of Christ. During his early years he worked in the oil fields as a tool dresser and driller in both West Virginia and Pennsylvania. He also worked on construction jobs and for Consolidation Coal Company and retired from Carnegie Gas Company in Waynesburg. Mr. Wilson was a fox hunter and horseman and was a member of Daybrook Fox Hunters Club. Surviving are his wife, Mabel Yost Eddy Wilson; four granddaughters, Susan Rockwell, Sally Sapp, Sandy Moore and Lee Ann Shumiloff; three grandsons, Steve, Christopher and Tim Wilson; and a twin sister, Mayme Wilson Jones Haught of New York, N.Y. Deceased are his first wife, Dolly Irene Tennant Wilson, who died April 19, 1972; two sons, Teddy Hugh Wilson and Ivan Blaine "Butts" Wilson; a grandson, Bradley Neil Wilson; and four brothers and three sisters.

Hugh W. Wright, 70, of Short Street, Bentleyville, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at home. He was born November 30, 1927, in Vanceville, a son of William and Mary Weir Wright. Mr. Wright was a 1945 graduate of Bentleyville High School. In June, 1987, he retired from Mathies Mine, New Eagle, where he worked as foreman at the corporation plant. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the end of World War II. Mr. Wright was a member of First Presbyterian Church and American Legion Post 165, both of Bentleyville. On June 17, 1949, he married Eleanor Haddad Wright, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Barry H. and Brad A. Wright, both of Bentleyville; a daughter, Lynn Pompei of Bentleyville, six grandchildren, Jae, Brian and Jeffrey Wright, and Tammy, Tyrone and Taylor Pompei; two sisters, Eoline McElroy and Maxine Wilson, both of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Samuel, Walter and Ralph Wright; and three sisters, Virginia Moore, Adelaide Baker and Dorothy Wright.

Steven J. Smoggie, 59, of Clarksville, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, following an illness of 18 months. He was born July 9, 1938, in Clarksville, a son of Mary B. Butchmay Smoggie of Clarksville and the late George Smoggie Sr. Mr. Smoggie was a retired steelworker, having worked for Jessop Steel Corp. of Washington for more than 35 years. He was a 1957 graduate of East Bethlehem High School, a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church of Brownsville and a member of United Steelworkers of America. Marjorie A. "Margie" Conn, 55, of Bethel Park, died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Southwestern Nursing Center, Jefferson, after an illness. She was born April 24, 1942, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Emma A. Jacobs Conn and the late Wedron A. Conn. Miss Conn was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Bethel Park. She worked for H.J. Heinz Co. for 37 years as a clerk. Surviving are two brothers, Wedron A. Conn Jr. of Avella and Charles W. Conn of Baldwin Township; and several nieces and nephews.

Thomas A. Cushey

Private services were held for Thomas A. "Teets" Cushey, 81, of Venetia, who died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born August 15, 1916, in Hackett, a son of Isaiah and Jeanette Lytle Cushey. Mr. Cushey was a lifelong resident of the Venetia-Finleyville area and was Protestant. He formerly owned and operated Cushey Brothers Beer Distributor in Hackett and retired from Consolidated Coal Co., Montour 4 Mine. Mr. Cushey was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Mildred Hoffman Cushey, with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage July 27, 1997; two daughters, Linda Levandosky of Finleyville and Deborah Kriebel of Venetia; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Dave Cushey of Venetia; and four sisters, Ethel Pemberton and Gail Dobash, both of Venetia, Lorraine Fink of Buffalo, N.Y., and Nellie Hugh of Conn. John J. Hughes Jr.
Practiced law in Claysville for more than 50 years
John Joseph "Jack" Hughes Jr., 83, of Washington, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Kade Nursing Home, Washington. He was born June 27, 1914, in Steubenville, Ohio, son of John J. Hughes Sr. and Lucille Barr Hughes. Mr. Hughes was a member of First United Methodist Church of Washington for more than 70 years. He graduated from East Washington High School in 1932; from Washington and Jefferson College in 1936; and from Pittsburgh School of Law in 1939. Mr. Hughes practiced law in Claysville for more than 50 years. Throughout those years, he was a member of the Washington County Bar Association and the Pennsylvania Bar Association. During World War II, Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Army, first in the 104th Cavalry at Indiantown Gap, and later in the Counterintelligence Corps in Pittsburgh. He served from February 1941 to October 1946. On January 30, 1943, he married Lola Scott. The wedding took place at her parents' home near West Middletown. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 1993. Mrs. Hughes survives. Also surviving are a son, John J. Nina Szott Kontos, 64, of 5578 Clarene Drive, Bethel Park, died at 11:58 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh. Mrs. Kontos was born August 29, 1933, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of Michael and Katherine Szott. A homemaker, she was a resident of Bethel Park since 1956 and was a member of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church of Canonsburg. On November 7, 1953, she married George Kontos, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Tim Kontos of Milwaukee, Wis., and George M. Kontos of Squirrel Hill; two brothers, Ed and Walter Szott, both of Bethel Park; three sisters, Helen Grazianni, Mary Dare and Sophie Eliazeus, all of Bethel Park; a granddaughter, Nicole Kontos; and several nieces and nephews.

World War II veteran was retired steelworker
Charles Roman, 73, of Richeyville, died at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 22, 1998, in his home. He was born May 16, 1924, in Vesta 7 (Centerville Borough), a son of Andrew and Helen Dohonich Roman. Mr. Roman was a member of Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church of West Brownsville, United Steelworkers of America, S.O.A.R. and Hancock-McCune-Horne American Legion Post 705 of Centerville. A retired steelworker, he worked for LTV Steel Corp. in Hazelwood, retiring in 1984. Mr. Roman was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Marine Corps in Okinawa in the South Pacific. Surviving are his wife, Pauline Bobcheck Roman; two sons, Charles M. Roman of Bentleyville and Bernard A. Roman of Uniontown; two stepsons, Edward and Francis Bobcheck, both of Uniontown; three grandsons, Chuckie, Chase and Clay Roman; two sisters, Christine Babich of Fayette City and Mary Sesco of Centerville; a brother, John Roman of Brownsville; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is his first wife, Wilma Kalafut Roman, who died January 22, 1985.
