Teacher for Nemacolin and Waynesburg schools
Josephine Horner Mintier, 89, of Portland, Maine, formerly of Waynesburg, died at 7:45 a.m. Thursday, September 24, 1998, in Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was born September 8, 1909, in Carmichaels, a daughter of William Ruth and Mary Rea Horner. Mrs. Mintier was a teacher for 36 years in Nemacolin and Waynesburg school districts. She retired in 1968, and moved to Maine to be near her family. She was a member of North Deering Congregational Church in Portland. Surviving are a daughter, Diana Mintier Bailey of Missouri City, Texas; two granddaughters, Stephanie Rea and Kendal Ruth Bailey; and a sister, Ruth Horner Kenny of Portland. Deceased are her husband, Arthur Mintier, who died in 1965; and two brothers, Earl C. and Winfield Rea Horner.

Mary Lola Nystrom
Owned antique shop on Old Hickory Road
Mary Lola Nystrom, 85, a resident of Rest Haven Nursing Home, Canonsburg, formerly of Old Hickory Road, Washington, died at 2:20 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospital, Canonsburg. She was born October 21, 1912, in Canonsburg, a daughter of Clarence W. and Katherine M. Stangroom Phillips. Mrs. Nystrom was a member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church and had been an active member for many years. She was a former employee of J.C. Penney Co., and she and her husband owned and operated an antique shop on Old Hickory Road, Washington. Mrs. Nystrom was a member of Crossroads Homemakers Club. On October 24, 1936, she married Carl Nystrom, who survives. Also surviving is a son, Dennis C. Nystrom of Pittsford, N.Y.; a daughter, Mona Brahs of West Finley; a brother, Leroy Sarber of Washington; a sister, Dorothy Weaver of Washington; six grandchildren, Robert A. Brahs III, Carla D. Blackhurst, Brant Nystrom, Lori Nystrom, Elizabeth Hershey and Barbara Brunner; and one great-granddaughter. Deceased is a daughter, Ruth M. Boswell; a sister, Ethel White; and two brothers, Clarence and George Phillips.

Mary Pierce

Mary Wise Pierce, 94, of Grandview Avenue, Monongahela, died Wednesday, September 24, 1998, in her home. She was born Sunday, August 28, 1904, in Pisake, N. J., a daughter of William and Anna Demchak. Mrs. Pierce had lived most of her life in Monongahela and was a member of Seven Day Adventist Church of Charleroi. Surviving are a son, Leroy Wise of Medford, N. Y.; three daughters, Irene Zukow of Donora, Louise Forsyth of New Eagle and Loretta Grove of Monongahela; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Demchak of Monongahela. Deceased are two husbands, James Wise, who died in 1936, and Luther Pierce, who died in 1990; and a brother, Joseph Demchak.

Frederick T. Roberts
1949 graduate of Trinity High School
Frederick T. Roberts, 67, of Santa Maria, Calif., formerly of Washington, died Sunday, September 20, 1998, of natural causes. He was born May 2, 1931, in Washington, a son of William and Janet Roberts. Mr. Roberts was raised in Washington, attended local schools, and was a 1949 graduate of Trinity High School. He had lived in Santa Maria since 1972, where he was a member of Elks Lodge 1538. Surviving are a sister, Lois A. Roberts Morss of Los Alamos, Calif.; a niece and several nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Deceased are two brothers, Jack, who died in 1954; and George. At the request of the deceased, there will be no services. Cremation was requested with private inurnment at a later date in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

Eugene E. Butalla
Retired teacher lettered in football at Waynesburg
Eugene E. Butalla, 66, of 720 North Porter Street, Waynesburg, died at 5 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg, following a brief illness. He was born December 1, 1931, in Fayette County, a son of Paul and Anna Sato Butalla. Mr. Butalla spent his early life in Fayette County, lived in Florida for several years and had lived in Greene County since 1978. He was a member of St. Ann Roman Catholic Church in Waynesburg. Mr. Butalla was a 1949 graduate of Masontown High School and was a member of the Waynesburg College Class of 1958. He earned his master's degree from Barry College in Miami, Fla., and continued his education at the University of Miami, Florida State University, Florida International University, all in Florida, and California University of Pennsylvania. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had been stationed in Germany. He worked for Masontown Borough, Asplundh Tree Co., Chrysler Corp. and Fisher Body. He helped in several building trades. Mr. Butalla taught high school at Miami Senior High School, and taught and coached at West Greene High School for two years, retiring in 1987. He was a teacher sponsor for several clubs and was a member of several professional teacher organizations. He was active in sports, having played football, basketball and baseball for Masontown High School and lettering in football all four years at Waynesburg College. On June 22, 1957, he married Sally V. Seifert, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Susan V. Zeis of Springboro, Ohio, Sharon V. Butalla of Silver Spring, Md., and Stephanie V. Bachmann of Hollywood, Fla.; three granddaughters, Ashlynn and Kaylee Bachmann and Kaitlin Zeis; three sisters, Pauline Gostyla of Clifton, N.J., Justin Franklin of Nashville, Tenn., and Helene Mirikitani of Honolulu, Hawaii; three brothers, Paul E. Butalla of Killen, Ala., Joseph D. Butalla of Carmichaels and Stephen P. Butalla of Rotunda West, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews. CORRECTIONS

Dana Cigana, 84, of 111 Pine Avenue, Houston, died Friday, September 25, 1998, in Manor Care of McMurray. She was born January 26, 1914, in Greensburg, and was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, Canonsburg. Surviving are two sons, Angelo Cigana of Canonsburg and Carl Cigana of Muse; two daughters, Toni Finney of Houston and Virginia Fish of Ashtabula, Ohio; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband Angelo Cigana; a son, Anthony, who died in infancy; a daughter, Mary Engott; a granddaughter, Lori Fish; a brother, Frank Bruno; and two sisters, Flora Bruno and Carmella Nagy.

Stephen Gerald Ertle

Stephen Gerald Ertle, 69, of Avella Road, Avella, died at 4:15 p.m. Thursday, September 24, 1998, in Washington Hospital, after an illness of a year and a half. He was born June 27, 1929, in Avella, a son of Stephen and Mary Edith Silvers Ertle. Mr. Ertle was a member of Central Assembly of God Church. He was a graduate of Avella High School and was last employed as a foreman for the state Department of Transportation for 11 years. Mr. Ertle was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force with more than 25 years of service, retiring October 31, 1973, with the rank of chief master sergeant. He served in Korea, Europe, Vietnam and the Philippines. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Vietnam Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, ROAK Presidential Unit Citation, RVN Gallantry Cross, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Philippine Independence Ribbon, Philippine Presidential Citation and the National Defense Service Medal. On March 2, 1969, he married Marilyn Ann Wainscott Ertle, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Stephen G. Ertle Jr. of Pittsburgh; two daughters, Lorna A. Danko of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mary Edith Ertle of Pittsburgh; a sister, Dorothea L. Marks of Washington; three nephews, three great-nephews and two great-nieces. Deceased is a sister, Helen Holmendy.

Gladys M. "Toot" Lennox, 61, of Lind Street, Wheeling, W.Va, formerly of West Alexander, died Friday, September 25, 1998, in Peterson Hospital, Wheeling. She was born September 28, 1936, in West Alexander, a daughter of the late Homer C. and Violet Miller. Mrs. Lennox was Protestant. Surviving are a daughter, Brenda J. Lennox of Wheeling; two brothers, Gene Miller of West Alexander and Ralph Miller of Clarksville; a sister, Wilma Beaty of Prosperity; and six grandchildren. Deceased, in addition to her parents, are two brothers. Services and burial will be held in Wheeling.

Edith L. Miller, 63, of Langeloth, died Thursday, September 24, 1998, in Weirton (W.Va.) Medical Center. She was born August 22, 1935, in Littleton, W.Va., a daughter of the late James Virgil and Sahara Martha Stoneking Wade. Mrs. Miller was a homemaker. Surviving are three sons, Richard Miller of Langeloth, David Miller of Burgettstown and Roger Miller of Washington; five grandsons, two granddaughters, two great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Thelma Pierce of Colliers, W.Va., Eva Prevost of Langeloth and Delia Gillispiee of Zanesville, Ohio; and two brothers, Lee Wade of Toronto, Ohio, and William Wade of Colliers. Deceased are her husband, Robert F. Miller, who died May 11, 1974; and a brother, John Wade.

Laurence C. Addleman
Korean War veteran retired from Mellon Bank
Laurence C. Addleman, 72, of Bethel Park, formerly of Clarksville, died Friday, September 25, 1998, following a brief illness. He was born January 13, 1926, in Clarksville, a son of Earl and Nellie Hartley Addleman. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army. Prior to his retirement, Mr. Addleman had been employed as a trust officer for Mellon Bank for more than 26 years. He was a member of Zollarsville Chapel United Methodist Church, an associate member of Christ United Methodist Church of Bethel Park and a member of Mellon Volunteer Professionals, Nemacolin Bowling League and Family Hospice. On October 17, 1948, he married Patricia Swihart, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Kevin F. Addleman of Indiana; a daughter, Laurel P. Purdue of Dallas, Texas; a sister, Lenora McMinn of Berlin; seven grandchildren, Ian, Heather, Keith and Kyle Purdue, and Rachel, Renee and Nicole Addleman; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Dr. Robert H. Addleman, is deceased.

Bernice Ray Durbin
Former cafeteria worker at West Greene High School
Bernice Ray Durbin, 85, of Graysville R.D.1 (Nineveh), died at noon Sunday, September 27, 1998, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home. Her death was unexpected, despite several years of poor health. She was born August 28, 1913, in Morris Township, Greene County, a daughter of Clyde Donald and Clara Gertrude Clutter Ray. A 1933 graduate of Nineveh High School, Mrs. Durbin had resided in the Nineveh area most of her life and was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. She was a former employee of Greenway Shirt Factory and had last worked as a cafeteria worker at West Greene High School. On August 29, 1936, she married Charles Huffman "Bud" Durbin, who died December 4, 1979. Surviving are two sons, Harold Ray Durbin of Ocala, Fla., and Charles Reed Durbin of Nineveh; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clarence Arthur "Buck" Ray of Waynesburg. Deceased, in addition to her husband, are a son, Larry Roger Durbin; two sisters, Freda Cathers and a sister who died in infancy; and a brother, Boyce Walter Ray.

Paul Jurovcik Sr.
Former principal and Intermediate Unit I teacher
Paul Jurovcik Sr., 59, of Somerset Township, Bentleyville, died unexpectedly Saturday, September 26, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born August 5, 1939, in Crackerjack, Monongahela, a son of the late Joseph John Jurovcik Sr. and Stephanie Martinko Jurovcik. He had formerly been employed at Combustion Engineering in East Monongahela. He was then a teacher for 11 years in the Avella and Chartiers-Houston school districts. He was a former principal at Crossroads Elementary School. Mr. Jurovcik retired from Intermediate Unit I in California after 17 years as an itinerant vision teacher in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties. He had been certified in orientation mobility and taught the visually handicapped. He also was a former summer adjunct professor of orientation mobility at the University of Pittsburgh. From 1993 to 1996, he was a real estate agent for Frontier Realty in McMurray. He had been a Somerset Township auditor for 12 years. Mr. Jurovcik was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Bethel Park, a life member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association and a member of the National Chapter of AARP. On April 8, 1998, he celebrated 37 years of marriage with his wife, Martha Lee Kline Jurovcik, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Beth Ann Jurovcik-Walsh of Belleview, Fla., and Mary Martha Jurovcik, at home; a son, Paul Jurovcik Jr. of Washington; four sisters, Anna Bosdosh of Ellsworth, Mildred Fragello of Monongahela, Carolyn Kokoska of Tempe, Ariz., and Barbara Jean Falappi of Monongahela; and a paternal aunt. In addition to his parents, deceased is a brother, Joseph John Jurovcik Jr.

Hazel M. Kruppa

Hazel M. Kruppa, 89, of Monongahela, died Friday, September 25, 1998, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. She was born April 6, 1909, in Grindstone, a daughter of Steve and Pauline Kasuba. Mrs. Kruppa was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church, Monongahela, and its Christian Mothers. Surviving are a son, Paul Kruppa; a daughter, Dorothy Kevech of Monongahela; five grandchildren, Alan Kevech, Laurie Franks, Andrea Kevech, Heather Kruppa and Guy Kruppa; and seven great-grandchildren. Deceased are her husband, Paul Kruppa, whom she married in June 1926; and five sisters, Velma Grcich, Mary Sampler, Irene Caccavo, Elizabeth Sambol and Helen Culina.

Margaret B. Nagy

Margaret B. Nagy, 92, of Monongahela, died Sunday, September 27, 1998, in her home in Carroll Township. She was born October 8, 1905, in Black Diamond, a daughter of John and Clara Kelleman Bakori. Mrs. Nagy formerly resided in New Eagle for 52 years. She was a member of the former Pocahontas Club and the former L.O.O.M. Ladies Auxiliary, both of Monongahela. She was Protestant. Surviving are three sons, William J. Nagy, with whom she resided, Charles Nagy of Finleyville and Robert L. Nagy of Rostraver Township; three daughters, Margaret Nagy of Coal Center, and Elizabeth Zimmerman and Carol Jayne Anderson, both of Monongahela; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Joseph Bakori of Finleyville; and two sisters, Clara Dewar of New Eagle and Elizabeth Millie of Wexford. Deceased are her husband, Mickey Nagy, who died September 19, 1996; a daughter, Helen Newstrom; a great-grandchild; and two brothers, John and Andrew Bakori.

Merne E. Pizzi
Active in First Baptist Church, Waynesburg
Merne E. Pizzi, 79, of Ninth and Bonar streets, Waynesburg, died at 9:15 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 1998, in Washington Hospital. She was born March 8, 1919, in Dunbar Township, Fayette County, a daughter of Alexander Scott and Bess Syphax Haggart. Mrs. Pizzi spent her early life in Fayette County and the rest of her life in Washington and Greene counties. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesburg, where she was a former deaconess. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star of Washington, a past president of Washington County Medical Auxiliary, a volunteer for Greene County Memorial Hospital, a past secretary for the Red Cross in Waynesburg, a member of the Waynesburg Women's Club and one of the founders of the Women's Bowling League of Washington. Mrs. Pizzi had worked as a secretary for her husband's medical practice in Washington. On July 16, 1938, she married her husband of 60 years, Dr. Wilson B. Pizzi, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Janet Pizzi McConnell of Mt. Lebanon and Deborah Pizzi Campbell of Waynesburg; two sons, W. Bryan Pizzi II and J. Preston Pizzi, both of Washington; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a brother, George Haggart of Roseburg, Ore. A brother, Charles Haggart, is deceased.

Joan I. Thompson
Past matron of Order of the Eastern Star
Joan I. Thompson, 63, of Butler, died Saturday, September 26, 1998, in Butler Memorial Hospital. She was a daughter of E. Gertrude Fowler Marburger of Mars and the late Andrew M. Marburger. Mrs. Thompson was United Methodist and was a past matron and life member of Mars Chapter No. 271, Order of the Eastern Star. She attended University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are her husband, William B. Thompson; two sons, W. Scott Thompson of Tallahassee, Fla., and Steven A. Thompson of Canonsburg; and five grandchildren, John, Greg, Ryan, Erin and Bonnie Joan Thompson.

Albert J. Dunch
Member of Transfiguration Church, Monongahela
Albert J. Dunch, 84, of Billen Avenue, Monongahela, died Monday, September 28, 1998, in Mon Valley Hospital. He was born July 20, 1914, in Atlasburg, a son of George and Mary Sanda Dunch. Mr. Dunch lived most of his life in the Monongahela area where he was a member of Transfiguration Church and its Holy Name Society. He also was a charter member of Valley Inn Volunteer Fire Department. He was a retired maintenance worker for Mon Valley Hospital and was formerly employed by U. S. Steel Donora Works. Surviving are his wife, Sophia Frankovich Dunch, with whom he celebrated 58 years of marriage on November 11, 1997; a son, Albert G. Dunch of Sutersville; a daughter, Marilyn Baran of Shoreham, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Jodi Frank, Cheryl Bailey, Brian Dunch and Marc Baran; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Peter Dunch of Ravenna, Ohio. Deceased are a grandson, Michael Baran; and two brothers, Alphonso and Victor Dunch.

Bryan K. Eddy

Bryan K. Eddy, 40, of 572 Race Street, Waynesburg, died Monday, September 28, 1998, in his home. Mr. Eddy was born February 24, 1958, in Waynesburg, a son of John R. Eddy of Deltona, Fla., and the late Lillian Grimm. He graduated from Carmichaels High School in 1976 and was a laborer for John Howard Enterprises. Surviving are a brother, J. Michael Eddy of Waynesburg; a sister, Kris Williams of Waynesburg; paternal grandmother, Helene Eddy of Waynesburg; and three nieces and one nephew. Services will be private. Interment in Jefferson Cemetery.

John W. Haught
Received Paul Harris Fellow Award
John W. Haught, 85, of South Main Street, formerly of Hawthorne Road, Washington, died at 8:51 a.m. Monday, September 28, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born January 26, 1913, in Shinnston, W. Va., a son of Charles Leonard and Bridgett Beatrice O'Connor Haught. Mr. Haught was an active member of Immaculate Conception Church and was in charge of the CCD Program several years ago. He was a graduate of El Dorado High School, El Dorado Junior Business College, El Dorado, Kan., and was a graduate of Penn Commercial College, where he was a former instructor. Mr. Haught had worked at Nickles Bakery and Washington Barber and Beauty Supply. He worked for 33 years in transportation associated with Suwak Trucking Co. in various operation and sales capacities. He was a member of Greater Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Laurel Mountain Traffic Association, the Traffic and Transportation Association of Pittsburgh and he was a past president of Washington Rotary Club, where he was a member for 57 years. For many years, he chaired the committee that selects a student to be considered for a full-year scholarship abroad. He was personally involved with many of his students, helping to prepare them for their duties as student ambassadors. He also received the Paul Harris Fellow Award and Service Above Self Plaque. Mr. Haught was the subject of a profile published in the Observer-Reporter June 15, 1998. On July 13, 1940, he married Lenore Griffin, who died November 29, 1997. Surviving are two daughters, Sarah A. Iannone of Sacramento, Calif., and Catherine H. Schwarzback of Eighty Four; three grandchildren, Michael and Steven Iannone and Megan Schwarzback; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a daughter, Barbara Jean Haught; and two brothers, Phillip Robert and Heber Haught.

Mary Messina Jensen
Member of Croation Fraternal Union
Mary "Mitzi" Dubravech Messina Jensen, 79, of 28 St. Marys Avenue, Rosebank, Staten Island, N.Y., formerly of Canonsburg, died Sunday, September 27, 1998, in St. Margaret Anne's Sisters of Charity Rehabilitation and Hospital, Staten Island. Born November 11, 1919, in Canonsburg, she was a daughter of Peter and Mary Majan Dubravech. Mrs. Jensen was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Staten Island, and was a member of the Croation Fraternal Union in Canonsburg. Her first husband, Louis Messina, died in 1947. Her second husband, Robert Jensen, died May1981. Surviving are two sons, John Messina and Dennis Jensen, both of Staten Island; two daughters, Roberta Mecca of Elizabeth, N.J., and Faith Cazzozza of Staten Island; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna J. Zylo of Burgettstown; and an adopted daughter. Burial is Wednesday, September 30, on Staten Island.

Luella Kerr Spillers, 94, formerly of Monongahela and Kansas City, Mo., died Sunday, September 27, 1998, in Fayette Health Center, Uniontown. She was born December 13, 1903, in Monongahela, a daughter of Smith B. and Anna M. Adams Kerr. Mrs. Spillers was a member of First Church of the Nazarene in Monongahela. She was a retired mail clerk from the Nazarene Publishing House in Kansas City, Mo. Surviving are five nephews, Lawrence A. and Kenneth D. Matthews both of Monongahela, John "Jack" Matthews of Riverhill, Howard Matthews of Kissimee, Fla., and William Kerr of Finleyville (Mingo); and a niece, Maxine Mizwa of Monongahela; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are her husband, Samuel Spillers, who died in 1988; two sisters, Nevada Cerra and Grace Matthews; and a brother, Arthur Kerr.

Louis J. Vecho

Private services were held for Louis J. Vecho, 89, of Monongahela, who died Wednesday, September 23, 1998, in Washington County Health Care, Washington. He was born October 20, 1908, in Monongahela, a son of Joseph and Mary Vecho. Mr. Vecho was a lifelong resident of Monongahela, where he was a member of St. Anthony's Church. He was a retired self-employed plumber and electrician in Monongahela. Surviving are a sister, Mildred Vecho Tempest of Monongahela; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his wife, Josephine Pezzoni Vecho, who died in 1984; two sisters, Theresa Snodgrass and Ida Kutasie; and three brothers, John, William and Andrew Vecho.

Julia Yodens

Julia Kormuth Yodens, 76, of Clarksville R.D.1, died Sunday, September 27, 1998, in her home. She was born April 10, 1922, in Clarksville, a daughter of Cyril and Julia Michlovich Kormuth. Mrs. Yodens was a graduate of Jefferson High School. She was a homemaker who lived all of her life in the Clarksville area. Mrs. Yodens was a member of St. Thomas Roman Catholic Church in Clarksville and was a member of the Women's Bowling League at Sahady Lanes in Jefferson. On August 13, 1955, she married Alfred A. Yodens, who died March 29, 1996. Surviving are two sons, David W. Yodens of Clarksville R.D.1 and Frederick J. Armstrong of Markleysburg; three grandchildren, Courtney A., Bridget C. and Quinn K. Yodens; and three sisters, Josephine Rucupero of Clark Summit, Constance Dorsey of Pittsburgh and Rosetta DeVito of Baltimore, Md. Helen Grace Condie, 86, formerly of Union Street, New Eagle, died Tuesday, September 1, 1998, in Armstrong County Memorial Hospital, Kittanning. She was born Saturday, September 30, 1911, in Riverview, New Eagle, a daughter of David and Dora Hodgson Condie. She was a lifelong resident of New Eagle, where she was a member of Riverview Baptist Church. She was a 1929 graduate of Monongahela High School; a retired secretary from Mississippi Glass of Floreffe; and was formerly employed by Joseph Horne Co. in South Hills Village. Deceased are three brothers, Andrew, Glenn and James Condie. Several nieces and nephews survive.

Martin P. Flannery
Ohio teacher, football coach, formerly of Wheeling
Martin P. Flannery, 76, of Hannibal, Ohio, died Tuesday, September 1, 1998, in New Martinsville Health Care Center, New Martinsville, W.Va. He was born November 7, 1921, in Wheeling, W.Va., a son of Patrick and Evelyn Flannery. Mr. Flannery was a member St. John Bosco Catholic Church, Sardis, Ohio. He was a graduate of Wheeling High School and West Liberty State College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. Mr. Flannery was a retired teacher and football coach at River High School in Ohio, where he coached several Ohio Valley Athletic Conference champions. He was a member of American Legion Post 760 of Hannibal, the Hilltoppers Athletic Hall of Fame and the River High School Hall of Fame. Surviving are his wife, Gloria Tonini Flannery; a son, Michael Flannery of Hannibal; a daughter, Kim Strawn of Hannibal; two sisters, Mary Bartsch of Wheeling and Kathryn Young of West Liberty, W.Va.; and six grandchildren, Angie and Tony Ensinger, Joey Flannery and Trever, Chris and Stephen Strawn. Deceased are his aunt and uncle, Mamie and William Hoffman, with whom he made his home as a child.

Richard N. Frederick

Richard N. Frederick, 66, of Morganza Road, Hendersonville, died Wednesday, September 2, 1998. He was born September 16, 1931, in Pittsburgh, a son of Stanley A. and Madlyn Carletto Frederick. Mr. Frederick was a graduate of Carrick High School and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict with the U.S. Air Force. He owned and operated Dick's Amoco in Hendersonville for many years and later was a partner in Van-Ed Motors of Washington. Following his retirement, he was employed by Southpointe Golf Club. He was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church of Canonsburg and a former member of Lone Pine Country Club. Surviving are his former wife, Irene Frederick McVay; two daughters, Charlene Frederick of Monongahela and Linda Katrencik of Rochester, N.Y.; and twin granddaughters, Michele and Melinda Katrencik.

Private services were held Wednesday, September 2, 1998, for Frank Luketich, 82, of Ellsworth, Somerset Township, who died Monday, August 31, 1998. He was born August 1, 1916, in McKeesport, a son of John and Anna Luketich. Mr. Luketich retired from Bethlehem Mines, Mine 60. He was a member of Ave Maria Parish, UMWA Local 1197 and the Croatian Fraternal Union of America Lodge 354 of Cokeburg. On April 27, 1940, he married Helen Mordensky, who died January 6, 1973. Mr. Nice was retired from the Regional Transit System of Cleveland and was an avid golfer. Hazel Atlas worker was longtime farmer
Lee A. Teagarden, 90, of Jefferson R.D.1, died Wednesday, September 2, 1998, in his home. He was born July 16, 1908, in East Finley, a son of Dessie P. Stollar, and lived most of his life in Greene County. Mr. Teagarden was a factory worker at Hazel Atlas Glass Factory in Washington and a longtime farmer. He was a member of United Brethren Church of West Finley. On July 30, 1937, he married Opal M. Stevens Teagarden, who survives, and with whom he celebrated their 61st anniversary. Also surviving are four daughters, Letha Powell of Spraggs and Mary Ann, Ellen and Marjorie Shaffer, all of Jefferson R.D.1; a son, Earle Teagarden of Waynesburg R.D.1; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Deceased are three grandchildren, Michelle Shaffer and Kevin and Calvin Teagarden, all who died in infancy.

Oldman G. Ward
Virginia resident born in Brave
Oldman G. Ward, 78, of Salem, Va., died Saturday, August 29, 1998. He was born June 1, 1920, in Brave, a son of Ernest and Ada Cumberledge Ward. Mr. Ward attended school in Waynesburg and was drafted into the Army in 1941, serving during World War II with Battery B, 42nd FA BN as a corporal. He participated in campaigns in Central Europe, Northern France, Ardennes, Normandy and Rhineland, receiving the EAME Ribbon with five bronze service stars and arrowhead, the Good Conduct Ribbon and American Defense Ribbon. He retired as owner of O. G. Ward's Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning Co. in 1981. Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Margaret Moore Ward; a son, Oldman G. "Zeke" Ward Jr. of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter, Sharon Ward Trout of Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, Paul J. Trout Jr. of Richmond and Zach G. Ward of Charlotte; a great-granddaughter; six sisters, Betty and Helen Morris, both of Waynesburg, Dorothy Jennings of Cortland, Ohio, Peggy Sellers of Eustis, Fla., Vaunda Davis of Carmichaels and Mary Braddock of Rochester. Josephine M. Dolan, 81, of Sycamore Street, Washington, died Tuesday September 29, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington, after a lengthy illness. She was born June 19, 1917, in Washington, a daughter of Joseph F. and Margaret Harsock Ross. Mrs. Dolan was employed as a glassworker at Metro Glass in Washington for many years. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Washington, and attended Clark Elementary School and Washington High School. Her husband, Paul Raymond Dolan, died in 1968. Surviving are three nieces, Dolores Boggioni of Columbus, Ohio, and Margaret Caruso and Cindy Main, both of Washington. M. Goldye Hattie

M. Goldye Carroll Hattie, a resident of the District of Columbia for 75 years, died Friday, September 25, 1998. She was born October 5, 1896, in Washington County, a daughter of William H. and Orpha Carter Carroll. Mrs. Hattie was a teacher in Washington County schools prior to moving to Washington, D.C. She was a graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Washington, D.C., and became a registered nurse on April 20, 1929. She served in government service for 30 years. Mrs. Hattie was a member of Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church, Washington, D.C.; Presbyterian Home; Georgetown Presbyterian Church; National Cathedral Association; Order of the Eastern Star, Electra Chapter 2, Washington, D.C., the ladies auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; Metropolitan Police Boys and Girls Clubs; and Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary of Washington, D.C. On April 20, 1929, she married James Hattie, who died in 1938. Surviving are four nephews, one great-nephew, two great-nieces, two great-grandnieces, one great-grandnephew and numerous cousins. Deceased, in addition to her husband, are five sisters, Zata, Reita, Velma, Gwendolyn Carroll Maddox and Audrey Carroll Evans; and two brothers, George R. and Oakley L. Carroll.

Janet M. (Peg) McCormick, 72, of Coyle-Curtin Road, Monongahela, died at 3:59 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 1998, in Monongahela Valley Hospital. She was born November 8, 1925, in Charleroi, a daughter of Hazel Stech. Mrs. McCormick was a member of First Christian Church of Charleroi and Nemacolin Country Club, Beallsville. On August 29, 1943, in First Christian Church, Joplin, Mo., she married William J. McCormick, who survives. Also surviving are a son, William Jon McCormick of Bentleyville; and two grandchildren, Attorney John M. Petrisek of Bentleyville and Janet Petrisek of Bentleyville. Deceased are two daughters, Kathleen (Kam) Petrisek Scherich, who died in 1990, and Kelly McCormick, who died in 1982. Mary P. Walters, 73, of 243 South Washington Street, Waynesburg, died unexpectedly Tuesday, September 29, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. She was born November 6, 1924, in Mt. Morris, a daughter of Ott and Audie Tennant Fox. Mrs. Walters was a retired employee of ALLTEL. She worked as a switchboard operator for more than 35 years, first in Waynesburg and later in Kittanning. She resided most of her life in Waynesburg, lived in Kittanning for a few years and returned to Waynesburg in 1992. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley J. Miller of Waynesburg R.D.5, Linda Moran of Cleveland, Ohio; a son, Russell D. Walters of Wadsworth, Ohio; a sister, Irene Milliken of Waynesburg; six grandchildren, Daniel and Scott Brummage, Allen D. Miller, Stacy Moran and Kristy and Dakota Walters; and four great-grandchildren. Deceased is a son, Clarence Wesley Walters.

She was born September 14, 1919, in Westland, a daughter of Edward D. and Hazel Welch Frye. Mrs. Dichak was a lifelong resident of the Canonsburg and Muse area. She was a homemaker and a member of Muse Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Jerry L. Dichak, of Canonsburg, with whom she made her home; a granddaughter, Kelly L. Norma Jean Hughes, 71, of Albert Street, Washington, died at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a lengthy illness. She was born October 31, 1926, in Washington, a daughter of George Clinton and Helen May Hughes Schoenberger. Mrs. Hughes was a member of Avery United Methodist Church, Washington, and had formerly worked at Jessop Steel as a secretary for 18 years. She was a 1944 graduate of Trinity High School, where she served as head drum major. She attended Muskingham College. On June 2, 1946, she married Glenn L. Hughes, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John Leroy Hughes of Huntingdon and C. William Hughes of Washington; and three grandchildren, Debra Jo Crouse, Nathan William Hughes and Kyle Glenn Hughes.

J. Garrett Hunter
Prominent dairy farmer of West Alexander
J. Garrett Hunter, 87, of West Alexander, died Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Washington Hospital. He was born November 25, 1910, in West Alexander R.D., a son of John H. and Rebecca Winters Hunter. Mr. Hunter was a member and elder of West Alexander Presbyterian Church. He was a graduate of Claysville High School where he received a FFA American Farmers degree. Mr. Hunter was a prominent dairy farmer and co-owner of Toll Gate Ayr Farm. He was a member of the Gideons Society, Claysville Grange, Pomona Grange, National Grange, the State and National Ayrshire Breeders Association, president of the West Alexander Agricultural Fair Association for 43 years, past president of ASCS office of Washington County, an auditor for Donegal Township and a West Alexander school director. On May 16, 1936, he married Adalyn Reed, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, John F. and Dwight R. Hunter, both of West Alexander, and James R. Hunter of Magnolia, Ohio; six grandchildren, Kathy Morgan, Gary, John Mark, Richard and Jeffrey Hunter and Shelli Arnold; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Ralph J. Hunter of Washington; a sister, Margaret Pollock of Eighty Four; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a granddaughter, Jill L. Hunter; a brother, Robert Hunter; and three sisters, Lillian Sampson, Gladys Gittings and Eudora Hunter.

Andrew Mondik

Andrew Mondik, 96, of 112 West Pitt Street, Canonsburg, died at 4:40 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Allegheny University Hospitals-Canonsburg. He was born May 1, 1902, in Canonsburg, a son of Joseph and Mary Bohinsky Mondik. Mr. Mondik was a lifelong resident of Canonsburg, where he was a member of St. Patrick Parish, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Labor Temple. Prior to his retirement, he was employed at Electric Weld in Canonsburg, Flannery Bolt in Bridgeville, Standard Tin Plate and Continental Can Co. On June 2, 1928, in St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, he married Anna Micik, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Anna Marie Novak of Canonsburg; a brother, Frank Mondik of Canonsburg; a sister, Margaret Graytok of Houston; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Joseph, Steve and William Mondik; and two sisters, Mary Mitchell Fritz and Pauline Nodianos.

Robert Eugene Rutan

Robert Eugene Rutan, 84, of Washington, died Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. He was born July 17, 1914, in Sycamore, a son of Hancle and Gay Rutan. Mr. Rutan was a member of First Christian Church of Washington, where he was formerly a deacon and usher. He worked as a meter reader for Columbia Gas Co. more than 30 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Edwin Scott Linton Post 175, American Legion. On November 28, 1970, in Washington, he married Florence Crouch, who survives. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased are his first wife, Edith Leppert Rutan, who died in 1968; and a brother, Howard Rutan.

Velda Hester Cumpston, 87, of 127 Thompson Gardens, Waynesburg, died 8:30 p.m. Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Greene County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 12, 1911, in Dunkard Township, Greene County, a daughter of James C. and Winnie Cook Cumpston. Miss Cumpston was a Protestant and a homemaker. Surviving are a sister, June C. Felicetta "Phyllis" Russo, 75, formerly of 284 North Franklin Street, Washington, died Friday, September 4, 1998, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington, following a lengthy illness. She was born January 22, 1923, in Salerno, Italy, a daughter of Giuseppe and Filomena Perretti Ormando. Mrs. Russo was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Church. She loved gardening, cooking and taking care of and being with her family. On June 10, 1942, she married Giuseppe Russo, who died September 7, 1990. Surviving are three sons, Anthony J., Angelo J. and Michael Russo, all of Washington; four brothers, Michele, Vincenzo, Antonio and Nicola Ormando, all of Italy; two sisters, Caterina Pepe and Rosa Califarra, both of Italy; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Mark, Joseph, Julianne, John, Nicholas and Nina Russo; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased is a brother, Giuseppe Ormando.

Harold L. Salsbury
WWII veteran retired from U.S. Air Force
Harold L. "Curly" Salsbury, 78, of Midwest City, Okla., died August 13, 1998. He was born June 24, 1920, in Ellsworth, to Oscar O. and Florence Mitchell Salsbury. Mr. Salsbury graduated from Trinity High School, was a veteran of World War II and Korea, and retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1966. He then worked in civil service at Tinker Air Base in Oklahoma City, Okla., until he retired. On May 20, 1942, he married Mary Routt, who died December 31, 1992. Surviving are his present wife, Pauline, whom he married May 3, 1994; a daughter, Nedra Jean Murphy; a grandson, Patrick Harold; three stepchildren, Rick Brewer, Cathy Long and Phyllis Monds; five stepgrandchildren; two brothers, Kenneth and Richard; a sister, Irene Adams Gomez; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a sister, Mary Jo Ruff; and a brother, Eugene Salsburg. Services were held August 17 at Meadowood Baptist Church, Midwest City. Burial, with full military rites and Masonic honors, was in Memorial Park Cemetery, Midwest City.

Silvio Tonti
Ironworker on Pittsburgh bridges
Silvio Tonti, 76, of Canonsburg, died Friday, September 4, 1998. He was born October 6, 1921, in Iselin, Indiana, a son of Alfred and Assunta Caggese Tonti. Mr. Tonti was a resident of Canonsburg most of his life, where he was a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church He was a veteran of World War II, serving overseas, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his combat injuries. He spent many years as an ironworker, working on many bridges and skyscrapers in the Pittsburgh area. Surviving are two daughters, Maureen Kusturiss of Eighty Four and Amy Tonti of Mt. Lebanon; a brother, Ebo Tonti of California state; three grandchildren, Angela Dominique Kusturiss, Michael E. Kusturiss III and Andrew Abboushi; and a great-grandchild. Deceased are his wife, Fern Falconi Tonti, who died August 17, 1987; and five brothers, Nick, Anthony, Marco, John and Albert Tonti.

Lloyd S. Hindman
U.S. Navy vet, Presbyterian minister and missionary
The Rev. Dr. Lloyd Stephenson Hindman, 84, of Denton, Texas, died Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Denton. He was born April 3, 1914, in Cross Creek, a son of Dr. and Mrs. A.O. Hindman. He attended Burgettstown public schools and was a 1935 graduate of Washington and Jefferson College and a 1938 graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, Princeton, N.J. He was ordained as a Presbyterian minister on May 19, 1938. The Rev. Dr. Hindman served as pastor of Presbyterian congregations in Maryland, West Virginia, Iowa, Colorado and Texas, and he served as a missionary for three-year terms in Korea and Thailand. He retired from active ministry in 1976. The Rev. Dr. Hindman was a part-time chaplain at Denton Good Samaritan Retirement Village and held various interim pastorates in Texas. He was a member of Denton Kiwanis Club, for which he served as president in 1984. He served as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy for 34 years, including World War II. He retired from the Naval Reserves as a captain. Surviving are his wife, Billie McReynolds Pierce Hindman, whom he married in 1966; a stepdaughter, Patricia Raney of Denton; three daughters, Carolyn Brown of Iowa City, Iowa, Betsy Foster of Forest Grove, Ore., and Amy Hindman of LaConnor, Wash.; two sons, Steve Hindman of Denton and Paul Hindman of Boulder, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His first wife, Bertha Wigman Hindman, whom he married in 1938, died in 1964. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church of Denton. Arrangements were handled by Mulkey-Mason/Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home, 705 North Locust Street, Denton.

Iva Lightfoot Johnson, 101, of Pleasant Hills, formerly of Donora, died Saturday, September 5, 1998, in Pleasant Hills. She was born January 26, 1897, in Lovedale, a daughter of Robert and Allie Jane Lucas. She had lived in Donora most of her life before moving to Pleasant Hills in 1994. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Monongahela. She was a former member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church, Donora, where she had been a choir member and had served on many church committees. Surviving are four daughters, Mildred Lightfoot Medina of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ruth Lightfoot of Pleasant Hills, and Gladys Roddy and Alice Lightfoot, both of Donora; three sisters, Myrtle Davenport of Monongahela, Jessie Branch of Monessen and Kathryn Loins of New York City, N.Y.; nine grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Deceased are her first husband, Alonso Lightfoot, who died in 1937; her second husband, Forrest Johnson, who died in 1979; two daughters, Dolores McDowell and Wilma Lightfoot; three sisters, Irene James, Etta Stamper and Nellie Gaskins; and two brothers, Frohman and Clare Phillips.

Violet Y. Newman, 82, of Preston Road, formerly of Ewing Street, Washington, died at 7 a.m. Saturday, September 5, 1998, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, following a three-week illness. She was born March 15, 1916, in Washington, a daughter of John and Mary Casheba Yosinski. Mrs. Newman was a homemaker and a member of Immaculate Conception Church, Washington. She enjoyed fishing and gardening. On July 8, 1943, she married Earnest George Newman, who died February 7, 1989. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Walter Casheba, Robert Sensky Sr. and John E. Yosinski; and a sister, Helen Sanchez.

Robert Louis Shaffer
Former Dilliner area resident was metalworker
Robert Louis Shaffer, 56, of Cleveland, Ohio, formerly of the Dilliner area, died Thursday, September 3, 1998, in Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. He was born March 29, 1942, in Poland Mines, a son of Elizabeth Deusenberry Presock of Poland Mines and the late Lawrence Shaffer. He was Protestant, attended Mapletown High School and was formerly employed as a metalworker in a bumper factory in Cleveland. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are four sons, Robert Louis Shaffer of Crucible, Robert Louis Jordan and Ralph Jordan, both of Wright City, Mo., and James Shaffer of Bobtown; five daughters, Debbie Shaffer Huzarcheck of Centerville, Robin Shaffer of Jefferson, Kathy Barkley and Carol Shaffer, both of Carmichaels, and Sharon Handford of Harrisburg; two sisters, Diane Presock of Dilliner and Emma Crouse of Forest Hills; a stepson, Robert Jordan of Hopwood; and numerous grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Ralph Shaffer and Jerry Presock. At the request of deceased, there will be no public visitation or services. Arrangements by Richard R. Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion.
