Angelo Adams, 71, of West Newton, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, in the home of his daughter, Nancy Rostcheek. He was born January 4, 1930, in Clairton, a son of Vincenzo and Jennie Sberna Adamo. Mr. Adams was a retired engineer for Ingram Barge Co. and attended Holy Family Roman Catholic Church in West Newton. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, was a member of American Legion Post 401 of West Newton and a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer. Surviving are five children, Tom Adams of Shreveport, La., Nancy Rostcheek of Monongahela, Jim Adams of Smithton, Dan Adams of Avis and Lisa Adams of Virginia; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mildred Humphries of West Mifflin, Eleanor Minford of Clairton, Gloria DiBella of Detroit, Mich. Deceased are his wife, Marie N. Tortorice Adams, who died in 1995; and a brother, Harry Adams.

Alfred John Bailey

Alfred John Bailey, 57, of Washington, died Sunday, January 7, 2001, in Washington County Health Center following a brief illness. He was born July 19, 1943, in Washington, a son of Thomas and Viola Trevena Kovacicek of Washington. Mr. Bailey had worked in the glass industry and attended Friendship Community Church in Washington. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 927. Surviving are two sons, Alfred John Bailey Jr. of Georgia and Robert E. Bailey of Virginia; two daughters, Elizabeth Barry of Washington and Michelle Bailey of Georgia; three sisters, Viola Connor, Alice Cecchini and Patti Plants, all of Washington; and eight grandchildren. Deceased is a sister, Shirley Williams.

Arthur G. Barnhart
World War II veteran
Arthur G. Barnhart, 81, of Avella, died unexpectedly Saturday, January 6, 2001, in the Washington Hospital emergency room. He was born October 7, 1919, in Scenery Hill, a son of Hamilton and Sadie Ross Barnhart. Mr. Barnhart attended Myers School in Scenery Hill. He was employed at Universal Cyclops Steel Corp. in Bridgeville for more than 40 years until his retirement in 1982. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II in the France Campaign and was a member of Church of the Covenant of Washington. Mr. Barnhart enjoyed gardening, travel and loved to trade cars. On October 12, 1940, in Lincoln Hill, Washington, he married Isabell Jane Huber, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Donna Johnston of Avella and Betty McCombs and Bonnie Reynolds, both of Washington; three brothers, Perry Barnhart of Amity and Edward and Harold Barnhart, both of Washington; two sisters, Esther Beall of Scenery Hill and Dolly Colbert of Pennsylvania; five grandchildren, Melissa Drost, Tom, Traci and Brandon McCombs and Janielle Reynolds; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are a brother, Lester Barnhart; and five sisters, Lucy Wiltrout, Emma Watkins, Daisy McElfrish, Florance Sumney and Elizabeth Bedillion. There will be private services conducted in Nichol Funeral Home, 1873 East Maiden Street, Washington.

Alice M. Capra

Alice M. Capra, 84, of McDonald, died Saturday, January 6, 2001, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. She was born February 17, 1916, in McDonald, a daughter of George Ira and Anna Kozeswik Martinek. Mrs. Capra was a member of St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church of McDonald, McDonald Senior Citizens and McDonald Garden Club and the chairman for the Democratic Committee for Washington County, Surviving are a son, James A. Capra of McDonald; a sister, Emily Carlier of Ohio; five grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her husband, James V. Capra, who died in 1973; two sisters, Anita May Turk and Mary Smith; and a brother, William Martinek. Funeral services are private and are being handled by Thomas-Little Funeral Service Inc. of McDonald. In lieu flowers, contributions may be made to St. Alphonsus Building Fund.

Walter William Clark

Walter William "Bud" Clark, 19, of Claysville, died at 5:05 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2001. He was born June 25, 1981, in Washington, a son of Walter William Clark of Clarksville and Tammy Renee Duncan of Claysville. Mr. Clark was employed by Jessop Employees Club of Washington and attended Clarksville Christian Church. He was a member of the National Honor Society, a 2000 graduate of Beth-Center High School, an avid basketball player and Penguin fan and collected baseball and football cards. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two brothers, David Michael Clark and Steven Anthony Clark, and a sister, Tammy Renee Clark, all of Claysville; a stepbrother, Daniel J. Clark of Clarksville; two stepsisters, Melanie Jane Clark and Nikki Lynn Clark, both of Clarksville; his stepmother, Renee Lynn Clark of Clarksville; paternal grandmother, Alice Clark of Waynesburg; and paternal grandfather, James Lee Clark of Waynesburg.

James Evans Sr.
Retired coal miner was C-M custodian
James Evans Sr., 90, of Canonsburg, died at 1:35 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2001, in Washington Hospital. He was born January 22, 1910, in Greenville, S.C. Mr. Evans was a member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church of Canonsburg and United Mine Workers of America. He was a coal miner for 45 years and last worked in Muse Mine for Consolidated Coal Co. After his retirement, he was a custodian for Canon-McMillan School District. Mr. Evans was married to Thelma Pendelton, who died September 13, 1977. Surviving are a son, James Evans Jr. of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, LaVelle, Victor and Tosha Evans; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Private visitation and services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 6, in Salandra Funeral Home, with the Rev. Lance B. Whitlock of Mt. Olive Baptist Church officiating. Private interment was in Oak Spring Cemetery, Canonsburg. Woodruff Family Services LLP.

Clara Francis

Clara Francis, 90, of Country Meadows, died Friday, January 5, 2001, in St. Clair Hospital, Mt. Lebanon. She was born September 24, 1910, in Salem, a daughter of Caroline and Joseph Fay. Mrs. Francis was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church of Washington. Surviving are her husband, Joseph Francis, of Country Meadows; a stepdaughter, Joyce Trachta of Pittsburgh; two granddaughters, Julie and Alison Trachta; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Deceased are three brothers, Joseph, Charles and Philip Fay; and four sisters, Helen Perkoski, Anna Steffick, Bessie Wiencek and Frances Waldygo.

Beverly D. Havens

Beverly Deloris Havens, 52, of Hattiesburg, Miss., died Saturday, January 6, 2001, in Washington Hospital following an eight-month illness. She was born December 2, 1948, in Ohio and was raised by Ralph and Mary Coffill. Mrs. Havens was a homemaker, and she was Methodist. On July 16, 1995, she married Lewis Mitchell Havens, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Kevin Mann of Washington, Eric Mann of Gulfport, Miss., and Stephen Feeney of Hattiesburg; a stepson, Lewis Mitchell Havens II of Hattiesburg; two daughters, Michelle Yawn of Hattiesburg and Tonya Feeney of Washington; and seven grandchildren. Services were private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were handled by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd.

Irene Ruth Knupp

Irene Ruth Knupp, 45, of Eighty Four, formerly of Millville, N.J., died at 8 p.m. Saturday, January 6, 2001, in her home after a three-year illness. She was born March 16, 1955, in Vineland, N.J., a daughter of Marie Schulz of New Jersey and the late Max Schulz. Mrs. Knupp was Methodist and a homemaker. She enjoyed the outdoors and camping. For the last six years, she was employed by the Observer-Reporter newspaper in Washington and had a newspaper route. On September 10, 1983, she married Galen Knupp Jr., who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Rhoda Schulz of Eighty Four; a son, Michael Ditko; three brothers, George Schulz of Philadelphia, Bobby Schulz of Vineland and Paul Schulz of Millville; and four sisters, Ann Campbell and Bonnie Schulz, both of Vineland, Barbara Cole of Millville and Rose Pierce of North Fort Myers, Fla. Deceased are two sisters, Mary Bishop and Edith Blomberg. Services were private and held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements were made by William G. Neal Funeral Homes Ltd.

Edna L. Lutes, 86, of Canonsburg, died at 4:45 a.m. Sunday, January 7, 2001, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington. She was born October 30, 1914, in Federal, a daughter of Jacob and Lillian Nicholas Hill. Mrs. Lutes was a member of First United Methodist Church in Canonsburg and worked as a waitress and cook for Howard Johnson's Restaurants. She was an avid cat lover and a bingo player. On September 30, 1979, she married her third husband, Eric Lutes, who died in March 1995. Surviving are two daughters, Judith Morris Phillips of Washington and Lynn Pfeffer Markovich of Canonsburg; a brother William Hill of Canonsburg; three sisters, Mary Combs of Washington and Betty Stofan and Carol Polanowski, both of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren, Melissa and Steven Markovich; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are her first husband, James A. Morris; her second husband, Francis (Mike) Pfeffer, who died October 4, 1977; a brother, James Hill; and two sisters, Gladys Stevens and Janet Fisanick.

Edith H. Wilkinson

Edith H. Wilkinson, 84, formerly of Canonsburg, died Thursday, January 4, 2001, in Beverly Health Care, North Strabane Township. She was born July 30, 1916, in North Strabane Township, a daughter of James A. and Rosena Ford Beam. Mrs. Wilkinson was a member of Chartiers Hill United Presbyterian Church. On February 5, 1940, she married Harold E. Wilkinson, who died November 7, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Paul Wilkinson of Islip, N.Y., and Robert Wilkinson of Orange, Texas; two daughters, Marian Plovic and Evelyn Wilkinson, both of Washington; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Richard W. Fox

Richard W. "Peck" Fox, 84, of Waynesburg, died at 10:50 a.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Rolling Meadows Nursing Home, Waynesburg. He was born January 30, 1917, in Jefferson, a son of Charles Fox and Elsie M. Ankrom Fox Willis. Mr. Fox had resided in Waynesburg most of his life and was Protestant. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served with the U.S. Army as a private with Headquarters ASFTC, 1st Training Regiment, 1671st SU. Mr. Fox was a self-employed carpenter and laborer in Greene County until retiring because of illness. He was married to Myrtle Rose Hetrick Fox, who died November 25, 1978. Surviving are two daughters, Elsie M. Hoffman of Clinton and Jeannie Rush of Port Charlotte, Fla.; three sons, Donald L. and Roy T. Fox, both of Waynesburg, and Gary A. Fox of Spraggs; a brother, Dennis Fox of Panama City, Fla.; 16 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Deceased are two sons, Richard and Robert Fox; a daughter, Loretta Fox; a granddaughter, Donna Fox; a great-grandson; a brother, Worthy Fox Sr.; and a sister, Albeta Detzler.
