McKinley P. Crow Jr.
Slovan man in moving industry for 50 years
McKinley Perry Crow Jr., 73, of Slovan, formerly of Mesta Drive, Washington, died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a three-month illness. He was born October 13, 1927, in Wellsburg, W.Va., a son of McKinley P. and Martha Amos Crow. Mr. Crow was employed by Kelly Mayflower for 20 years, Anderson Transfer for five years, Greene Transfer for three years and owned and operated his own business with Mayflower Van Lines until his retirement. He was in the moving industry for more than 50 years. Mr. Crow made his home with May Wilkins. His first wife, Dorothy Hixenbaugh Crow, died in 1993. His second wife, Mary Harris Crow, survives. Also surviving are a son, William Crow of Graysville; two daughters, Linda Crow and Barbara Schweinebraten, both of Washington; a brother, John Crow of Washington; two sisters, Mary Johnston of Washington and Martha Guiddy of Weirton, W.Va.; five grandchildren, Jeff, Barbara and Sherry Crow, April Schweinebraten and Debra Baumgartner; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are five sisters, Zella Durilla, Irene Kurpil, Helen and Stella Latshaw and Pearl Wheeler.

Josephine K. Czmiel

Josephine K. Czmiel, 84, formerly of Elizabeth Street, Washington, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Washington County Health Center, Washington. She was born April 1, 1917, in Jerome, a daughter of John and Katherine Balout Krofcheck. Mrs. Czmiel was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Hilary Roman Catholic Church of Washington and Washington Senior Citizens. Mrs. Czmiel had attended Belle Vernon schools. On September 12, 1937, she married Charles H. Czmiel, who died May 26, 1984. Surviving are two sons, Charles H. Czmiel Jr. of Sewickley and Jerald Czmiel of Miamisburg, Ohio; a daughter Joan Morrison of Inglewood, Ohio; three grandchildren, Jerald Jr., Mark and Charles Czmiel; and three great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Stanley and Tony Krofcheck; and a sister, Clara Kerekes.

Mary M. Dinch
Retired food service worker for W&J College
Mary M. Dinch, 84, of Washington, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Washington Hospital, following a brief illness. She was born November 8, 1916, in Buffalo Township, Washington County, a daughter of John and Bertha Young Dinch. Mrs. Dinch had been a food service worker for Washington & Jefferson College for more than 10 years prior to retirement. She was a member of Christian Missionary Alliance Church of Washington. Mrs. Dinch was an avid bingo player and enjoyed collecting bottles and four-leaf clovers, as well as flower gardening. On May 22, 1936, she married Edward Mervin Dinch, who died December 31, 1997. Surviving are two sons, Harry E. Dinch and Donald M. Dinch, both of Claysville; a daughter, Darlene Blayney of Lagonda; two brothers, Lloyd and Bernard Dinch, both of Avella; 10 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. Deceased are two brothers, Herman Dinch and an infant brother; five sisters, Ida Thompson, Blanche Clemens, Bessie Kerr, Alice Louis and Verla Allen; a granddaughter, Monica Sue Russell; two great-grandsons; and two great-granddaughters.

Samuel H. Morton
Ordained deacon in La. was WWII veteran
Samuel Hawkins Morton, 80, of Slidell, La., died Thursday, May 24, 2001, in Bossier City, La., from heart disease. He was born in Millsboro, a son of Harry B. and Neonetta Hawkins Morton. Mr. Morton was a former resident of Minneapolis and Shreveport and New Orleans, La., and a resident of Slidell for 23 years. He was a graduate of Waynesburg Presbyterian College, Tulane School of Social Work and Donaldson Real Estate School. Mr. Morton was an ordained deacon and elder of First Presbyterian Church in Slidell. He was a U.S. Army Air Forces veteran of World War II and a member of Slidell Lodge 311 F&AM and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5735. Mr. Morton was a member of Slidell Noon Lions Club and a former member of Teamsters Union in Pennsylvania. Surviving are his wife, Virginia "Ginger" Morton; a son, James E. Morton of Waynesburg; four daughters, Betty Sue Allen of Bossier City, La., Diane Robinson of Pennsylvania, Linda Lou Morton-Zelena of Greensburg and Kathryn Vitek of Waynesburg; two sisters, Emily Ann Mark of Millsboro and Elizabeth M. Lohman of Winterville, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, in First Lutheran Church, Lake City, Minn., followed by burial with military honors in Oakwood Cemetery in Lake City. Arrangements by Honaker Funeral Home Inc., Slidell and Mahn Funeral Home, Lake City.

Rudolph Haiden
Clarksville barber fought in Battle of Bulge
Rudolph Haiden, 83, of Clarksville, died Monday, June 18, 2001, in Greene County Memorial Hospital, Waynesburg. He was born September 8, 1917, in Central, a son of George and Anna Haiden. Mr. Haiden served in the U.S. Army during World War II with the 3rd Armored (Spearhead) Division. He served during the Battle of the Bulge and in five campaigns - Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He lived in Clarksville most of his life, where he was a self-employed barber for more than 50 years. He also was employed at Republic Steel's Clyde Mine in Fredericktown in the 1940s. Mr. Haiden was a member of Carmichaels Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3491, American Legion Post 391 of Fredericktown, Clarksville Area Lions Club and Master Barbers Association. He attended St. George's Serbian Orthodox Church in Masontown. Mr. Haiden loved gardening. On November 26, 1952, he married Agnes Kania, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, MaryAnn Haiden and Elaine Simpson, both of Clarksville; a granddaughter, Haleigh Kristine Simpson; a sister, Mary Bashista of McKeesport; and several nieces and nephews. Deceased are four brothers, Alex Hayden and Ted, Sam and Nick Haiden; and two sisters, Elizabeth Stefek and Helen Gugliardo.

Clarence W. Carden
Fisher Body retiree was Army veteran
Clarence W. Carden, 71, of Finleyville, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Washington County Health Center. He was born January 18, 1930, in Ellsworth, a son of Wes and Lillie Pritchard Carden. Mr. Carden was retired after 35 years of service as a machinist with General Motors Fisher Body Division in West Mifflin. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. Mr. Carden was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Finleyville. He was a member of American Legion Post 613, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge 172, Mingo Rod & Gun Club, Hackett Club, Dallas Lodge 508 F&AM and Auto Workers Union 544 in Dravosburg. Surviving are his wife, Louise Lancaster Carden; two sons, Richard Carden of Finleyville and Lawrence Carden of Bethel Park; a daughter, Darlene Miller of Amarillo, Texas; a brother, Roy Carden of Fairless Hills; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Deceased are two brothers, Earl and Luther Carden; and a sister, Violet Acton.

James C. Coen
Korea veteran was military adviser to Saudi Arabia
James C. Coen, 70, of St. Augustine, Fla., formerly of Cecil Township, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in IHS Greenery of Canonsburg. He was born November 26, 1930, in Cecil Township, a son of James Burl and Mary Brewer Coen. Mr. Coen was a Korean conflict veteran, retired after 22 years of service in the U.S. Army. He was then employed by Vinnell Corp. as a military adviser to Saudi Arabian National Guard, retiring in 1990. Mr. Coen was a member of American Legion Post 137 of St. Augustine. Surviving are a sister, Imogene C. Dalbo of Canonsburg; two brothers, George D. Coen of Washington and William L. Coen of Upper St. Clair; and eight nieces and nephews. A sister, Ilene Coen, is deceased.

Owen J. McGivern
Smith Township road department supervisor
Owen J. "Irish" McGivern, 85, of Slovan, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Washington Hospital. He was born September 24, 1915, in Ohio, a son of William and Jane Murray McGivern. Prior to retirement, Mr. McGivern was employed as a supervisor for the Smith Township road department. He was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Burgettstown, Burgettstown Knights of Columbus Council 3440, Cherry Valley Sportsmen's Club and Slovan Volunteer Fire Department. Mr. McGivern was one of the founders in implementing Slovan Ambulance Service, and was a nephew of the late Phillip Murray, United Steelworkers labor leader. On December 27, 1952, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Burgettstown, he married Lucille Dettorre, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sheila Ramirez Carter of Cecil and Francine Ramirez of Coconut Creek, Fla.; and two grandchildren, Logan and Devin Carter. Deceased are three brothers, Phil, Joe and William McGivern; and five sisters, Janet Dollish, Mary Hausen, Jane McAdoo, Boots Castellino and Betty Henry.

Joseph C. Delpiere
Former McDonald fire chief
Joseph C. Delpiere, 77, of McDonald, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Canonsburg General Hospital. He was born June 4, 1924, in McDonald, a son of Fernal M. and Anna M. Estvan Delpiere. Mr. Delpiere served in World War II and retired from American Bridge Co. in Ambridge and Bellaire Electric as a shop supervisor. He was a life member of McDonald Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as fire chief from 1968 to 1977. Mr. Delpiere was a member of Belgium Club and a local steelworkers union. On August 20, 1947, he married Leona Phillips, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Joann Bennett of McDonald; two sisters, Ruth Klimas of McDonald and Rose Fallert of Bethel Park; and three grandchildren, Brian, Jamey and Tim Bennett. Deceased are a son, Joseph Delpiere Jr.; a brother, Art Delpiere; and a sister, Ella Mountain.

Pearl Miles
Longtime employee of Presbyterian Senior Care
Pearl Miles, 93, of Washington, died Wednesday, June 20, 2001, in Presbyterian Medical Center, Washington. She was born February 20, 1908, in Amwell Township, a daughter of Silas Ingram and Isa M. Bails Miles. Miss Miles was a member of Faith United Presbyterian Church of Washington and a graduate of Trinity High School. While in high school, she began working for Presbyterian Senior Care, from where she retired in 1992. Miss Miles was a member of Order of Eastern Star, Washington Chapter 409. Surviving are a nephew, Cye Miles of Maryville, Tenn.; two great-nephews, a great-great-niece; and a great-great-nephew. Miss Miles was the last of her immediate family. Deceased are two sisters, Bertha Miles and Opal McCarty; and a brother, Walter Miles.

Daniel E. Horner
Retired Army lieutenant colonel from Carlisle
Daniel E. Horner, 47, of Carlisle, died June 12, 2001, in Carlisle. He was born October 1, 1953, in Bedford, a son of the late Floyd Eugene and Shirley L. Otto Horner. Mr. Horner retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. He participated in the ROTC program and was a graduate of University of Pittsburgh. Mr. Horner was twice married. His first wife, Karen Egolf of Germany, and his second wife, Millie Telga of Moon Township, both survive. Also surviving are two sons, Matthew Horner of Moon Township and Kyle Horner of Germany; two brothers, Randall Horner of Aston and Brian Horner of Gardner; and his maternal grandmother, Alberta Otto of New Paris. Services will be held in Pleasantville, with burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Edward Blackburn Funeral Home of Pleasantville is in charge of arrangements.

Michael G. Hoskinson

Michael G. Hoskinson, 31, of 125 Lakewood Drive, Canonsburg, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at home. He was born March 5, 1970, in Mt. Morris, a son of Don E. and Caroline S. Bolyard Hoskinson of Mt. Morris. Mr. Hoskinson was a member of Fox Chapel Church in Mt. Morris. He was employed by CONSOL Energy as a computer analyst. Surviving, in addition to his parents, are his wife, Michelle M. Hoskinson, whom he married June 5, 1993; a sister, Pam Hill of Mt. Morris; maternal grandmother, Edna Bolyard; and a niece. Deceased are paternal grandparents, Harry and Leota I. Hoskinson; and maternal grandfather, Harold Bolyard.

Anthony Leskovic
McGraw-Edison retiree
Anthony Leskovic, 80, of Meadow Lands, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Humbert Lane Health Care Center, Washington. He was born April 26, 1921, in Meadow Lands, a son of Frank and Cecelia Zalar Leskovic. Mr. Leskovic served under the Civilian Conservation Act, retired in 1983 from McGraw-Edison in Canonsburg and was a member of the AFU. He was an avid bowler, who was involved with several bowling leagues, and he enjoyed reading and helping others. Surviving are a sister, Cecelia Mohoric of Meadow Lands; and several nieces and nephews. A brother, Frank Leskovic, is deceased.

Anna Debolt Snyder
Special education teacher in Greene County
Anna Debolt Snyder, 90, of Waynesburg, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Haney's Personal Care Home, Rices Landing. She was born July 15, 1910, in New Geneva, a daughter of Paul and Ethel David Debolt. Mrs. Snyder resided most of her life in Waynesburg where she was a member of First United Methodist Church. She earned three degrees from Waynesburg College, a bachelor's degree in music and bachelor of science and master's degrees in education. She also studied at California University of Pennsylvania and Mansfield State Teachers College. In 1944, Mrs. Snyder became the first teacher in Greene County certified to teach mentally retarded children. Her teaching career included 20 years in Jefferson-Morgan School District and 23 years in Waynesburg Central School District, where she taught special education. She was a member of Pennsylvania Retired Teachers Association. Her husband, Andrew Snyder, is deceased. Surviving are a brother, Bill Debolt of Zanesville, Ohio; and a sister, Helen D. Krause of Washington. A sister, Gladys Debolt, is deceased.

Mary M. Cancelmi, 86, of Baldwin Borough, died Thursday, June 21, 2001. Surviving are three sons, Norbert A., Louis G. and Harry J. Jr. Cancelmi; a brother, Edward Smetana; two sisters, Adoria Frei and Margaret Ryzak; six grandchildren, James, Noreen, Daniel, Annemarie, Louis and Michael; and eight great-grandchildren. Deceased is her husband, Harry J. Cancelmi.

Jerry B. MacCartney

Jerry B. MacCartney, 69, of Beverly Hills, Fla., died Wednesday, June 20, 2001. He was born in Claysville. Mr. MacCartney moved to Beverly Hills six years ago from Franklin. He was a pharmacist and had retired in 1986 from Eli Lilly Co. in Pittsburgh and in 1989 from Franklin Regional Medical Center. Mr. MacCartney was a member of Claysville American Legion. He served in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. MacCartney was Presbyterian. Surviving are his wife, Patricia L. McCrerey MacCartney; two sons, Jeffrey B. MacCartney of Youngstown, Ohio, and Timothy J. MacCartney of Virginia Beach, Va.; three daughters, Deborah A. Beohmer of Virginia Beach, Kellie S. Garland of Polk and Julie L. White of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Jack Earl MacCartney of Boardman, Ohio, and James R. MacCartney of Coudersport; and 12 grandchildren. Harriet V. "Grandma" DuBois, 90, of Willoughby, Ohio, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Lake West Hospital, Willoughby. She was born July 10, 1910, in Bridgeville. Mrs. DuBois was a Lake County resident. She was a former resident of Avella. Surviving are a son, Roger L. DuBois of Hoboken, N.J.; a daughter, Mary Jane Hinton of Willoughby; a sister, Betty Grady of Pittsburgh; eight grandchildren, Sam, Beth, Sue, Doug, Steve, Lise, Scott and Luke; and seven great-grandchildren. A memorial Mass will be held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 10, in Immaculate Conception Church, Willoughby, with the deceased's granddaughter, Beth, officiating. Incorrect information appeared in the obituary of Steve Sarish, published Thursday. Mr. Sarish served with the U.S. Marines, not the Navy; and his daughter, Teresa M. Restanio, died in September 2000, not October.
