JOSEPHINE C. MAZZIOTTI
Josephine C. Mazziotti, 94, of Ickesburg RR 1, and formerly of Camp Hill, died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003.

She was born Aug. 27, 1909 at Blairsville to the late Jacob and Mary (Erdlejac) Kovacic.

She was a longtime member of the Harrisburg Bridge Club.

She was the widow of John A. Mazziotti, who died in 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Joanne E. Woutersz of West Chester and Joyce M. Mazziotti of Ickesburg; a sister, Rose Carnicella of Altoona; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Sept. 6 in Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Harrisburg. Burial was in Resurrection Cemetery, Harrisburg.

Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, handled arrangements.

SUSANNA K. RINE
Susanna K. Rine, 88, of Duncannon died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2003 at Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield.

She was born Nov. 24, 1914 in Donnally Mills to the late Cloyd and Agnes (Memminger) Kepner.

She was a retired teller from Commonwealth National Bank, New Bloomfield; and a member of Duncannon Presbyterian Church and Duncannon Golden Age Club.

She was the widow of John B. Rine.

Surviving are three nephews, Lewis Kepner of Duncannon, Charles Carl of Newport and J. Cloyd Kepner of Harrisburg.

She was preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters.

Services were held Sept. 8 in her church with the Rev. Dr. Krisana Poontajak officiating. Burial was in Hall’s Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Port Trevorton.

Ronald C.L. Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon, handled arrangements.

RODNEY R. GROFF
Rodney R. Groff, 76, of Hampton, Va., died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 at Hampton Medical Center, Va.

He was born in Perry County, and had been a Hampton resident since 1959.

He retired in 1973 from the Air Force after 24 years, which included service during the Vietnam War. He then continued to work at Langley Air Force Base NCO Club for 12 years.

He was a member of Hampton Elks Lodge 366 and the VFW in Pennsylvania.

Surviving are his wife of 27 years, Robbie “Bobbie” L. Groff; a son and his wife, Cornelius and Linda Groff, and their son, Daniel; a daughter and her husband, Virginia and Andrew Sell, and their two daughters, Kathryn and Crista, all of Florence, S.C.

His extended family includes two stepsons and their wives, Cecil and Candy Broughman and Donald and Chris Broughman of Hampton; a stepdaughter and her husband, Beth and Tom McGrath of Buena Vista, Va.

Survivors also include nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; brothers and their wives, Allen and Helen Groff of New Bloomfield, Patrick and Shirley Groff of Thompsontown, and a sister, Rachel Spangler of New Bloomfield.

A graveside service was held Sept. 13 in Parklawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Norman G. Tippens officiating.

VIOLET M. MILLER
Violet M. Miller, 81, of Pisgah State Road, Shermans Dale, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 in Carlisle Regional Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 17, 1921 in Carroll Twp. to the late Wilbur and Ida (Bentsel) Adams.

She was a member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and enjoyed bird watching and gardening.

She was the widow of Charles W. Miller Sr., who died in 1992.

Surviving are two sons, Charles W. Jr. of Shermans Dale and Randall J. of New Bloomfield; two daughters, Judy L. Morrison and Robyn L. Livingston, both of Shermans Dale; four sisters, Sylvia Ford, Helen Snyder and Janice Rosenberry, all of Carlisle, and Grace Binkley of Linglestown; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Saturday, Sept. 13 in Boyer Funeral Home, New Bloomfield, with the Rev. Alan K. Foor officiating. Burial was in Bloomfield Cemetery.

RICHARD D. SMITH
Richard D. “Dick” Smith, 78, of Blain RR 1 died Saturday, Sept. 6, 2003 in Sarah Todd Home, Carlisle.

He was born Nov. 30, 1924 at Blain to the late Gard M. and Mae V. (Snyder) Smith.

He was a farmer; a former Toboyne Twp. supervisor; a member of Three Springs Church of the Brethren, Blain RR 1; an outdoorsman and avid hunter who had the film, “Call of the Outdoors” made; and formerly was involved with Blain Youth Baseball.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel G. Lyons Smith; two sons, Richard G. “Red” and Cris N., both of Blain RR 1; a brother, Robert E. of Newport; two sisters, Vera M. Thomas of Carlisle and Ida N. Book of Blain; two grandchildren, Scott D. Smith and Katie J. Smith; three stepgrandchildren; Heather Mitten, Arthur Zimmerman and Wayne Zimmerman; two great-grandchildren, Megan M. Smith and Benjamin S. Smith.

A graveside service was held Sept. 10 in Blain Cemetery.

MARY A. HOCKENBERRY
Mary A. Hockenberry, 75, of Grange Hall Road, Millersburg, and formerly of Walterboro, S.C., died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 at home.

She was born in Lykens to the late Charles and Hilda (Zimmerman) Row.

She was a member of Walterboro Church of God, a former member and lay pastor at Matamoras Church of God and Reigles’ Bible Fellowship and a Sunday school teacher for more than 60 years; a painter for Old Country Living magazine; and enjoyed sewing and doing crafts.

Surviving are her husband, Paul D. Hockenberry; two sons, David E. of Newport and Daniel P. of Millersburg; a daughter, Melody A. Hockenberry of Millersburg; four grandchildren, Eric, Christy, Matthew and Paula; and a great-grandson, Caleb.

Services were held Sept. 13 at Reigles’ Bible Fellowship, Millersburg. Burial was in the church Cemetery.

Hoover Funeral Homes, Millersburg, handled arrangements.

LAWRENCE G. MYERS SR.
Lawrence G. Myers Sr., 80, of Duncannon died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003 at home.

He was born Oct. 12, 1922 in Wheatfield Twp. to the late Forrest G. and Annebelle (Arnold) Myers.

He retired from Commonwealth Concrete, Harrisburg; an Army veteran; and a member of American Legion Post 340 and VFW Post 255.

He was the widower of E. Marguerite Myers.

Surviving are a daughter, Evelyn Wright of Duncannon; four sons, Mike of Newport and Paul E., Art W. Sr. and Richard A., all of Duncannon; two sisters, Hannah Owczarek and Mary A. Mutzabaugh, both of Duncannon; 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence G. Jr., and two grandsons, John E. Wright Jr. and Mike Myers Jr.

Services were held Sept. 15 in Ronald C.L. Smith Funeral Home, Duncannon, with the Rev. Harry Roush officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Duncannon.

FRANKLIN C. SHAFFER
Franklin C. Shaffer, 86, of Loysville died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003 at Claremont Nursing Home, Carlisle.

He was employed by Bethlehem Steel, Steelton, for 40 years; graduated in 1936 from New Cumberland High School; a member of First Christian Church, Lemoyne, West Shore Lodge 681, F&AM, Camp Hill, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Harrisburg Forest 43, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Consistory Valley of Harrisburg, Zembo Temple AANMS of Harrisburg, National Skeet Shooting Association and a life member of Carlisle Fish and Game; and an avid hunter and skeet shooter.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Copp Shaffer; two sons, Darryl of Cammal, Pa., and Jeffrey of Shermans Dale; a brother, Raymond “Piney” of New Bloomfield; five grandchildren, Rolf, Colleen, Melanie, Sarah and Daniel Shaffer; and two great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 12 in Musselman Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Lemoyne. Burial was in St. Johns Cemetery, Hampden Twp.

KENNETH J. KNISELY
Kenneth J. Knisely, 84, of Tuscarora Twp., Millerstown, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 in Stonebridge Rehab and Nursing Center, Duncannon.

He was born July 15, 1919 in Newport to the late John D. and Lula (Baker) Knisely.

He was a retired operating engineer and a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers 542; a member of Social Order of Owls, Loyal Order of Moose 232 and VFW Post 34, all of Newport; and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was the widower of June I. Reisinger Knisely.

Surviving are five sons, Arthur R., David K. and Emory L., all of Millerstown, James W. of Newport and Richard P. of Liverpool; two daughters, Bonnie K. Burd and Jean I. Hambright, both of Millerstown; a brother, Darwin C. of Mechanicsburg; two sisters, Goldie Minnich of Honesdale and Faye Hammaker of Marysville; 18 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Sept. 12 in David M. Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with the Rev. Roz Mason officiating. Burial was in Eshcol Cemetery, Millerstown.

LEROY C. PAIGE
Leroy Charles Paige, 74, of Mt. Pleasant Mills RR 1, Washington Twp., Snyder County, and formerly of Liverpool, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2003 in Brookline Manor Nursing Home, Mifflintown RR 1.

He was born Nov. 26, 1928 in Washington Twp. to the late Ray Daniel and Mary (Steffen) Paige.

He retired in 1985 as owner/operator of a tractor trailer rig for Interstate Truck Service, hauling auto parts to Cleveland, Ohio and New Jersey. He previously worked as a truck driver for Harold Heintzelman, hauling produce.

He was educated at the former Freeburg High School; a Protestant; a member of Central States Teamsters Union, Liverpool American Legion Post 364, Richfield Ambulance League, Reliance Hose Company Ambulance League, Middleburg and Freeburg Volunteer Fire Company; and enjoyed doing yard work, flowers and trees.

He was the widower of Ruth Pauline Kauffman Paige, who died Dec. 18, 2002.

Surviving are two sons, Leslie D. of Thompsontown RR 1 and John E. of Apopka, Fla.; two daughters, Judy R. Witmer of Liverpool RR 2 and Linda L. Schoonover of Liverpool; two brothers, Donald of Mt. Pleasant Mills RR 1 and Eugene of Hummels Wharf; seven grandchildren, John Andrew, Johnny and Laura Christine Paige, Yvonne Renee Hubler, James Witmer II and Megan Renee and Ernest F. III Schoonover; six great-grandchildren, Damon, Lucas L. and Joshua Hubler, Ernest F. Schoonover IV and Noah Landon and Jaden Brooke Paige.

Services were held Sept. 11 in Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with the Rev. James R. Bramer officiating. Burial was St. Matthew’s Lutheran Cemetery, Millerstown RR 2.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association of Pennsylvania, Central Region, 3001 Old Gettysburg Road, Camp Hill 17011.

GUY N. SHANAFELTER
Guy N. “Jake” Shanafelter, 79, of Fieldcrest Drive, Mechanicsburg, died Monday, Sept. 8, 2003 at home.

He was born July 23, 1924 at Blain to the late Guy D. and Cora E. (Anderson) Shanafelter.

He was an Army, Navy and Air Force veteran, from which he retired in 1967. He served in World War II and the Korean Conflict and was in the 503rd Parachute Regimental Combat Team and was part of Liberation Forces who jumped on the island of Corregidor.

He was a member of Mechanicsburg Lions Club, VFW Post 477, Carlisle, American Legion Post 232, Dry Run, and a lifetime member of Middletown Anglers and Hunters Association.

Surviving are his wife, Helga M. Shanafelter; two sons, Rodger G. of Mechanicsburg and Roy N. of Lewisberry; two sisters, Inez Bender of Landisburg and Patricia Smith of Blain; two brothers, Kenneth and James, both of Blain; and two grandchildren, Jacob and Allison.

A graveside service was held Sept. 11 at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville.

A memorial service was held Sept. 13 in Three Springs Church of the Brethren, Blain, with the Rev. John S. Kipp officiating.
