NEESA E. GARDNER
Neesa Eve Gardner, infant daughter of Christie Gardner and Brandon Arkward of Third Street, New Cumberland, died Thursday, April 15, 2004 in Harrisburg Hospital.

She was born March 19, 2004 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

In addition to her parents, surviving are her maternal grandparents, Trudy and Douglas Gardner, maternal great-grandparents, Paul Boose and Otha and Virginia Gardner, all of New Bloomfield; and many aunts and uncles.

Graveside services were held April 19 in Centre Presbyterian Cemetery, Loysville, with the Rev Alan K. Foor officiating.

Boyer Funeral Home, New Bloomfield, handled arrangements.

DOROTHY V. MARKLE
Dorothy V. Markle, 77, of Tyson Hill, Mifflintown RR 5, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at home.

She was born May 3, 1926 in Montgomery, Ala., to the late Vonnie and Morine L. (Stewart) Herron.

She was a former care giver and she and her husband owned and operated the former Chicken Pen Restaurant, Tyson Hill, Port Royal, for many years; and she enjoyed gardening, yard sales and reading.

She was the widow of Lester S. “Pap” Markle, who died June 9, 1991.

Surviving are a son, George W. of Mifflintown RR 3; a daughter, Morine Carter of Liverpool; two nephews, Charles Herron Jr. of Tallassee, Ala., and Frank Herron of Mongomery, Ala.; a niece, Sue Binkley of Montgomery; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, handled arrangements.

KYLE E. MCNAUGHTON
Kyle E. McNaughton, 21, of Honeysuckle Hollow Road, Newport, died Thursday, April 22, 2004 as the result of a work accident.

He was born July 11, 1982 in Carlisle to John E. and Peggy Fultz McNaughton of Newport.

He was a welder and employed by Taryn Company, Landisburg; a 2001 graduate of Newport High School and Cumberland-Perry Vo-Tech; attended Heart of Grace Community Church, Wila; a member of Millerstown Moose 925; and enjoyed playing the drums, shooting basketball and mowing grass.

In addition to his parents, surviving are a brother, Brady W., at home; his maternal grandparents, Gerald and Sara Fultz of Ickesburg; paternal grandparents, John and Mildred McNaughton of Eshcol; and aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services were held April 26 in Heart of Grace Community Church with the Revs. Bill Earney and Anthony Hill officiating. Burial was in Eshcol Cemetery.

FRANKLIN E. STUCK
Franklin E. Stuck, 62, of Newport RR 2 died Monday, April 19, 2004 from injuries sustained in an accident at his home.

He was born Oct. 5, 1941 in Fermanagh Twp. Juniata County, to Alma G. Varner Stuck of Thompsontown and the late Samuel Marlin Stuck.

He was retired from Hempt Bros., Camp Hill, and Mark-Crete, Inc., Mechanicsburg, and a member of Millerstown Moose Lodge 925.

In addition to his mother, surviving are his wife, Chrys T. Kammerer; a son, David L. of Newport RR 1; a sister, Anise Page of Thompsontown; and two grandsons, Blair Houck and Dilan Stuck.

He was preceded in death by a brother, M. Gene, who died in 1965.

A memorial service was held April 22 in Brown Funeral Home, McAlisterville, with the Rev. Maureen Wagner officiating.

JANET BITNER
Janet Adair Bitner, 90, of Hastings Blvd., Longstown Village, York, and a former longtime resident of Carlisle, died Saturday, May 22, 2004 at York Hospital.

She was born on Monday, Dec. 1, 1913, at Loysville to the late Charles W. and Mary Ellen (Hench) Adair.

She retired in 1975 after more than 30 years of service as a registered nurse at Carlisle Hospital and also had worked for Dr. William E. DeMuth of Carlisle; graduated from Landisburg High School and was a 1936 graduate of York Hospital School of Nursing; a longtime member of Grace United Methodist Church, Carlisle, and had been attending Yorkshire United Methodist Church in York, and a member of Perry County and Cumberland County historical societies; and was known as a great cookie and pie baker and was an avid reader and loved to crochet.

Surviving are her husband of 66 years, P. Galen Bitner of York; a son, Dr. Richard L. Bitner of Reinhold; a daughter, Jane B. Van de Water of York; a brother, Lee H. Adair of Centre; and two grandchildren, Sally A. Van de Water of Boston, Mass., and Peter M. Van de Water of Silver Spring, Md.

She was preceded in death a brother, Jay Adair.

Services were held May 27 in Ewing Brothers Funeral Home, Carlisle, with the Rev. Dennis A. Hummel officiating. Burial was in Westminster Memorial Gardens, Carlisle.

VIOLA P. KYLLONEN
Viola P. Kyllonen, 91, formerly of Camp Hill, died Monday, May 24, 2004 in Manor Care, Carlisle.

She was born Oct. 16, 1912 in Jacobs Creek, Pa., to the late John and Olive Rixey.

She was a member of Christian Life Assembly of God, Camp Hill.

She was the widow of Andrew Kyllonen Jr.

Surviving are four sons, Rev. David of Dillsburg, Rev. Paul of Savannah, Ga., Phillip of Lewisburg and Jonathon of Pittsburgh; a daughter, Lillian Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Services were held May 27 in her church with the Rev. David Kyllonen officiating. Burial was be in Rolling Green Memorial Garden, Camp Hill.

Boyer Funeral Home, Duncannon, handled arrangements.

CHARLES R. BURD
Charles R. Burd, 83, of Newport, and recently of Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004.

He was born July 11, 1920 in Mount Union, Mifflin County, to the late Charles Ray and Ethel (Appleby) Burd.

He retired from Conrail in 1981 and also had been a state road employee and a carpenter; and enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening work.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years and nine months, Miranda M. Dudley Burd of Newport; two sons, Charles W. of Newport and Rick L. of Highspire; a daughter, Joyce D. Van Asdalan of Mt. Holly Springs; a brother, Carl S. of Fruitland Park, Fla.; a sister, Edith Rider of Newport; seven grandchildren; and 10 grandchildren.

A graveside service was held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 2, in Newport Cemetery with pastor Leonard Gochenaur officiating.

Cremation Society of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, handled arrangements.

EARL R. HOOVER
Earl R. Hoover, 87, formerly of Marysville, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 in Homeland Center, Harrisburg.

He was retired from the former Olmstead Air Force Base, Middletown, and West Shore Oil Company, Marysville; a Navy veteran of World War II; and a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Marysville, where he was a former trustee, Marysville Fire Company, Marysville Sportsmen’s Club and Golden Age Club of Marysville.

Surviving are his wife, Janet L. Hoover; a daughter, Peggy L. Ritter of Marysville; two grandchildren, Bradley Ritter of Marysville and Jodi L. Lawler of Fallbrook, Calif.; and two great-grandsons, Clayton and Derek.

Services were held May 29 in Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville. Burial was in Perry Heights Cemetery, Marysville.

HELEN F. COLLEDGE
Helen F. Colledge, 89, of New Germantown and recently a resident of Perry Village Nursing Home, New Bloomfield, died Monday, May 24, 2004 at Perry Village.

She was born Sept. 22, 1914 near Blain to the late Charles P. and Mary A. (Shambaugh) Robinson.

She was a homemaker and a member of New Germantown United Methodist Church and Blain Ambulance Club.

She was the widow of Amos A. Colledge.

Surviving are two sons and a daughter, Richard A. of Mechanicsburg, Joann C. Fyler of Dillsburg and William E. of Port Royal; a sister, Martha Sayers of Camp Hill; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held May 28 in Nickel Funeral Home, Loysville, with the Rev. Roz Mason officiating. Burial was in Blain Cemetery.

ROBERT J. WEISER
Robert J. “Jake” Weiser, 51, of S. Third Street, Newport, died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Hershey Medical Center.

He was born Jan. 6, 1953 in Harrisburg to John H. Snyder Jr. and the late Della Fean (Kirk) Pressler.

In addition to his father, surviving are his wife, Patsy A. Weiser; stepmother, Goldie Snyder of Harrisburg; a son; two daughters; several brothers; and four grandchildren.

Services were held May 29 in David M. Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with pastor Matthew Zang officiating.

ROBERT J. COOK
Robert Jack “Cookie” Cook, 75, of Liverpool RR 2 died Monday, May 24, 2004 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

He was born May 28, 1928 in Liverpool to the late William and Isabel (Salenberger) Cook.

He retired in the late-1980s from Hempt Bros., Inc., Camp Hill, where he was a mechanic for 35 years, and then owned and operated Bob’s Arco Service Station at Liverpool for 10 years; educated in Liverpool schools; a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, Liverpool, and American Legion Post 364, Liverpool; and enjoyed NASCAR and sharpening saw blades.

Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carrie Leona Stroup Cook; two sons, Gary R. of Liverpool and Van E. of Abilene, Texas; two daughters, Sandra M. Cook, at home, and Brenda A. Swartz of Millerstown RR 2; a sister, Dorothy Rice of Shamokin; four grandchildren, Brian and Brady Swartz and Robert A. and Charles Cook; and four great-grandchildren, Thalia and Tatiana Cook, Elias Swartz and Jennifer Ng.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles, and a niece, Bonnie Heckman, who died in May of 2004.

A memorial service was held May 29 in Garman Funeral Home, Liverpool, with the Rev. James R. Bramer officiating.

VERA A. PAUL
Vera A. Paul, 91, formerly of Toms River, N.J., died Wednesday, May 26, 2004 in Kinkora Pythian Home, Duncannon.

She was born Oct. 6, 1912 in Saville Twp. to the late Rufus S. and Florence M. (Stone) Orris.

She was a retired lab technician and a 1931 graduate of Newport High School.

She was the widow of J. Edward Paul.

Surviving are nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Russell Orris, and two sisters, Verna Smith and Ruth Stone.

Services were held May 29 in David M. Myers Funeral Home, Newport, with pastor Donald Hestor officiating. Burial was is Newport Cemetery.

JOHN A. RHOADS
John A. “Dusty” Rhoads, 88, of Shermans Dale, formerly of Marysville, died Sunday, May 23, 2004 in Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill.

He was retired from the former Pennsylvania Railroad and the Cumberland Valley School District, and also was a former employee of Sadler Oil Co., Marysville; and a member of Shermans Dale Fire Company and Shermans Dale Ambulance Association.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews.

Services were held May 27 in Shalonis Funeral Home, Marysville. Burial was in Chestnut Grove Cemetery, Marysville.
