Meet the Residents

This month we are happy to meet Peter Vitelli.

Peter was born on April 24, 1924. His parents Peter and Anna lived in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, at the time of Peter's birth. Peter's dad Peter was an iceman and his mom, Anna, was a homemaker. Peter was the only boy in his family. He had six sisters. Peter attended Roosevelt Junior High School.

In 1941 Peter meet Catherine Bailey. The couple met at a dance at St. Michael's' Catholic Church in Philadelphia. Peter entered the dance hall dragging his coat on the floor. Catherine drew Peter's attention to his coat and he asked her if she would like to have the full-time job of looking after him. Peter spends the evening teaching Catherine how to dance.

Six months later Peter asked Catherine to marry him. Catherine said "Yes!" The couple eloped to Elton, Maryland to get married on April 22, 1 942. Their best friends Richard Finley and Florence Lombardi joined the couple. They served as Bestman, and Maid Of Honor. When Peter and Catherine returned home to Philadelphia they had a good old-fashioned Italian wedding celebration in Peter's parents backyard. Peter and Catherine resided with his parents in Germantown.

In 1942, Peter was drafted into the Army Air Corp. He was stationed in the Mojave Desert in California. This was a secret base. Peter was a mechanic and later attended Ground Airplane Mechanic School in Texas. Peter received the Good Conduct Medal. He was discharged from the Army in 1945.

Peter worked with his dad delivering ice for the American Ice Company. He also was a mechanic at General Motors and drove truck for Acme Markets in Philadelphia.

Peter and Catherine were blessed with five children, Constance, Kathleen, Antonette, Mary and Peter. They have 15 Grandchildren, 24 Great Grandchildren, and 2 Great Great Grandchildren. Peters daughter Constance was killed in a tragic train accident, leaving behind two young daughters, Connie and Norma. Peter and Catherine adopted their two Grand Daughters and raised them in a loving home.
