WWII vet was former Shamokin postal supervisor

Victor E.J. Bogetti, age 87, of 500 N. Oak St., Coal Township, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died on Dec. 29, 2003, at Evangelical Community Hospital, Lewisburg. Born in Shamokin on Feb. 27, 1916, he was the son of the late Francis and Clara (Ferettino) Bogetti.

Visitation will be on Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, from 7 to 9 p.m. with a Christian Wake Service at 8 p.m. in the James Kelley Funeral Home, 1001 W. Arch St. at Maple Street in Shamokin, Coal Township. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church, First and Chestnut streets, Coal Township. Burial will be in St. Patrick Cemetery, Trevorton.

Mr. Bogetti was a 1933 graduate of Coal Township High School and recently celebrated their 70th anniversary.

He was attempting to cross at the intersection of Market and Mulberry streets in Shamokin. An investigation is pending. He was a life-long resident of Coal Township. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the supervisor of mail in Shamokin. He also previously worked as an agent for Baltimore Life Insurance and as a salesman for Baum's Sporting Goods, Sunbury, serving central and northern Pennsylvania schools.

Mr. Bogetti was married on Jan. 19, 1938, in St. Patrick's Church, Trevorton, by the Rev. McGrath to the former Ann F. He was a member of Our Lady of Hope Church, Coal Township, and also belonged to the following organizations: Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Cardinal Mindzenty, Shamokin; a charter member of the Purple and White Sportsmen; founding member of AMVETS; former president of Shamokin Area Softball League; Loyal Order of Moose, Shamokin and Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was an avid football fan. He was the last surviving member of the Italian Ambassadors String Orchestra, a musical and singing group that performed at various functions and on Sunbury radio station WKOK every Sunday. During the 1980's, he served as a Shamokin area school director. Mr. Bogetti enlisted in the U.S. Army on April 24, 1944, in Camp Walters, Texas, and was honorably discharged on May 9, 1945, from Mason General Hospital, Brentwood, N.Y. He was a radio operator with the Company G, 357th Infantry, 90th Division in the European Theatre of Operations and participated in the Campaign of Western Europe. Wounded during the Battle of the Bulge, he was a recipient of the Purple Heart.

The family will provide flowers. Memorial contributions may be made to Our lady of Hope Church Memorial Fund, c/o Rectory 863 W. Chestnut St., Coal Township, Pa. 17866, or St. Jude Children's Hospital Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105-1942 or to the donor's favorite charity. Relatives and friends attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at our Lady of Hope Church, First and Chestnut streets, Coal Township, on Saturday at 9:45 a.m.

Survivors include one son, Victor F. Bogetti, Shickshinny Lake; two daughters: Dolores Wolfe, Watsontown; and Dianne Callahan Grayson, St. Augustine, Fla.; nine grandchildren: Lisa Ann Rumberger, Elysburg; Lu Ann Stout, Waldorf, Md.; Victor F. Bogetti II, Hunlock Creek; Renee Weiler, Landenberg; Robert Wolfe, Middletown; Alexa Rechel, Douglassville; Mary Jo Maff, Bethlehem; William Callahan, Kulpmont; Alison O'Brien, North Attleboro, Mass.; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Bogetti, Shickshinny Lake; sons-in-law: Robert Wolfe, Watsontown; and Lou Grayson, St. Augustine, Fla.; 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

W. Guy 'Fuzz' Bankes Jr.

W. Guy "Fuzz" Bankes Jr., 79, of 121 Ridge Road, Nescopeck, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died at 7:10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, where he was a patient since Saturday.

Guy was born in Nescopeck on Nov. 21, 1924, the only child of the late Willard G. and Beatrice E. Miller Bankes Sr. A 1942 graduate of the former Nescopeck High School, he was a veteran, having served in the Pacific Theater with the Marine Corps from May 1943 to December 1945. Later, he was an engineering draftsman at ACF and then at Berwick Forge and Fabricating. He retired in 1980 as vice president of Emmons Railcar, York.

A member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Nescopeck, he was also a member of VFW Post 8227, Nescopeck, a life member of Elks Lodge 1138, and member of Nescopeck Hunting and Rifle Club. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener.

Guy is survived by his wife of 57 years, the former Beatrice I. Cleaver; two daughters: Pam Bankes, Westchester; and Mrs. Arthur (Cindy) Pupa, Pittston; and by a grandson.

Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck, where services will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday. The Rev. Fred E. Hickok, his pastor, will officiate. He will be laid to rest with military honors in the family plot at Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut Street, Berwick. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the memorial fund of the church.

Helen G. Whitenight

Helen G. Whitenight, 87, formerly of 111 Fir St., Orangeville, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died at 2:20 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Grandview Health Homes, Danville, where she was a patient since early September. Previously, she was a resident of Vintage Knolls, Danville, from February, 2001 to July, 2003.

She was born in Fishingcreek Township, May 13, 1916, a daughter of the late Delbert and Laura (Davis) Bogart. She resided in Oak Street, Bloomsburg, for 33 years, moving to her last address in Stony Brook Circle in 1987.

Early in her life, she was employed by Bloomsburg Mills Inc. for several years. She last worked at the former Evans Appliance Store, Main St., Bloomsburg.

Mrs. Whitenight was a member of the Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ. She also had been an active member of the ladies auxiliary of Valley of Bloomsburg Post 273, American Legion.

Kent E. Snyder

Army veteran of World War II, retired custodian

Kent E. Snyder, 77, of 2653 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died 10:38 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, in Bloomsburg Hospital.

Kent was born Oct. 4, 1926, in Catawissa R.R. 2, a son of the late Roy and Florence Fahringer Snyder.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, the Philippine Liberation Service Medal and the WW II Victory Medal.

Mr. Snyder retired as a custodian from Central Columbia School District and previously was employed at Milco Industries.

He was a member of St. John Lutheran, Espy; also Espy Fire Co. and Catawissa American Legion post. He enjoyed watching sports, especially Penn State, being with his grandchildren and going fishing.

Also surviving are three children: Mrs. Dennis (Joyce) Laubach, Bloomsburg; Mrs. Dale (Kay) Martenas, rural Bloomsburg; Gregory Snyder and his wife, Sheri, both of Willow Street; five grandchildren: Julie Laubach, State College; Kelly Fensch, New Jersey; Jennifer Martenas, Scranton; Emily and Aaron Snyder, Willow Street; three brothers: Guy Snyder, rural Berwick; Clinton Snyder, rural Catawissa; Wayne Snyder, Lime Ridge.

Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, 2575 Old Berwick Road, Bloomsburg, with his pastor, Rev. Gordon Smith, officiating. He will be laid to rest with military honors in the veterans section at Elan Memorial Park, Lime Ridge. Calling hours are Tuesday, 10 a.m. to noon. Joseph Kaminski

Sister in Numidia survives Mount Carmel man

Joseph Kaminski, 84, of 330 S. Vine St., Mount Carmel, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Friday evening, Sept. 26, at his home, after a long illness.

He was born July 5, 1919, in Mount Carmel, a son of the late Bolclaus "Ben" and Anna (Truszkowska) Kaminski.

Mr. Kaminski went to school in a one-room schoolhouse in Kulp.

He worked at the Baltimore Naval Shipyard during World War II and joined the Merchant Marines under the Marine-Fireman-Oilers-Wipers (M.F.O.W.) Union after the war. He traveled the world in big iron boats and worked for the following shipping lines: Pope & Talbot, American President Lines and Matson Lines. During one of his voyages, he met his wife.

Mr. Kaminski was a member of Divine Redeemer Church and a former member of Our Mother of Consolation Church in Mount Carmel.

He was a member of the Mount Carmel Elks, Senior Action Center and Knights of Columbus Council 628. He is a former member of the Mount Carmel Moose and Mount Carmel Eagles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday at Divine Redeemer Church, Mount Carmel, with the Rev. Norman H. Hohenwarter officiating. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Bear Gap, under the direction of the Joseph J. Stutz Inc. Funeral Home, 40 S. Market St. Mount Carmel.

John R. Beltz

Lifelong farmer, USDA poultry and egg inspector

John R. Beltz, 85, of 30 E. 10th St., Bloomsburg, and former longtime resident of Catawissa R.R. 3, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died at the Bloomsburg Health Care Center late Saturday morning, Dec. 6, 2003, where he had been a resident for the past two weeks for rehabilitation.

Mr. Beltz was born March 30, 1918, in Locust Township, and was the son of the late John W. and Ruth Bittner Beltz.

John served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army 63rd Field Artillery Battalion, in the South Pacific.

Mr. Beltz had farmed in Locust Township from 1946 to 1970. He then went to work for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he was a poultry and egg inspector throughout Pennsylvania for 10 years. He retired on April 30, 1980.

Mr. Beltz was a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Numidia. He was an avid card player, collected hats and was an enthusiastic Philly fan.

Beltz and his wife Darla, of Catawissa, R.R. 3, two daughters, Dr. Kathleen (Beltz) Rarig, of Newtown, and Paulette Hickey and her husband James, of (Espy) Bloomsburg, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren, and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Allen R. Horne Funeral Home, 193 McIntyre Road, Catawissa R.R. 3, with the Rev. Donald L. Snyder, officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Numidia. Visitation will be Tuesday from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Central Pa. Mary L. Tloczynski

Mount Carmel native was retired garment worker

Born in Mahanoy City, Feb. 12, 1928, she was a daughter of the late Frank Hoffman and Theresa Martin.

Mrs. Tloczynski was a 1946 graduate of Mahanoy Township High School, and was a retired garment factory worker.

She was a member of the Church of Our Lady and was a former member of St. Joseph's Church, both of Mount Carmel.

Leiser B. 'Dutch' Johnson

Leiser B. "Dutch" Johnson, 92, formerly of 409 Fowler Ave., Berwick, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, in St. Joseph Hospital, Syracuse, N.Y. He was born January 29, 1911, in Lewisburg, and was the son of the late Cyrus B. and Mary Jane Leiser Johnson. Mr. Johnson graduated from Lewisburg High School in 1928 and Bucknell University in 1933. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He served for 6 yrs. in Troop G, 103rd Cavalry, Pennsylvania National Guard. He was an insurance agent most of his life working for Nationwide Insurance, Hardware Mutual Insurance Co., Lebanon Mutual Insurance Co. as a special agent, and from 1954 to 1986 owned his own insurance agency in Berwick. He also worked for the Pennsylvania Dept. of Public Assistance. Mr. Johnson worked 8 yrs. for ACF Industries in their New York engineering dept.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Berwick, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He was also a member of the Charity Lodge #144, Lewisburg, Royal Arch Chapter #314, Berwick, and Caldwell Consistory, Bloomsburg.

Barbara (Hargraves) Eisenhauer

Barbara J. She was born Feb. 18, 1930, in Shickshinny, and was the daughter of the late Charles Hargraves, and Lillian (Vivian) Hargraves Titus and her husband, William Titus.

She is survived by her five daughters: Karen Maslinski of Berwick, April Maslinski of Berwick, Lynne Embree of Wapwallopen, Mrs. Randy (Kandy) Sudol of Berwick, Mrs. Bruce (Robyn) Rospendowski of Hunlock Creek; three sons: Ricky H. Eisenhauer Sr. of Berwick, Craig M. Eisenhauer Sr. of Hunlock Creek, Scott C. Eisenhauer Sr. of Hunlock Creek; three sisters: Eileen Switzer of Berwick, Mrs. Jack (Marcia) Wall of Berwick, and Betty Applebey, Shickshinny; four brothers: Charles Hargraves of Shickshinny, Walter Hargraves of Shickshinny, Donald Hargraves of Shickshinny, Lynn Titus of Mocanaqua; 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Hester E. (Hons) Pifer

She is survived by her son, Richard L. Pifer of Topeka, Kansas; two daughters: Mrs. James (Gloria) Hauck of Almedia; Mrs. Nelson (Nina) Kulp Jr. of Berwick; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Born in Nescopeck, Dec. 21, 1929, a daughter of the late Paul H. and Ruth Nungesser Slusser.

She worked for a time at a paper mill in Berwick.

Member of St. James Lutheran Ch., Zenith. Enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Entrusted to the care of the Heller Funeral Home, Nescopeck where services will be held Friday 11 a.m. with the Rev. Allen F. Acor, pastor Strawberry Ridge United Ch. of Christ, officiating. She will be laid to rest in Pine Grove Cemetery, Walnut St., Berwick. Calling hours 7-9 p.m. Thursday.

Thomas R. Bender Sr.

Thomas R. Bender Sr., 84, of 420 Avenue E, Riverside, Cemetery-obituaries?utm_source=partner_genlookups&utm_medium=partner&utm_campaign=genlookups_July21_textlink&tr_ad_group=textlinks&tr_funnel=supersearch">died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at Emmanuel Nursing Center.

Born in Elizabeth, N.J., Nov. 15, 1918, he was a son of the late Fredrick and Carolyn (Blatz) Bender.

Mr. Bender served with the Army during World War II.

He was a microbiologist at the Merck Cherokee Plant in Riverside for 41 years, retiring in 1987.

Mr. Bender was a member of St. Joseph Church, Danville, and served as a Eucharistic minister.

He was a Kiwanis member and board member of the 4-H club. He was also a board member of Sunnybrook Park, and served on the school board at St. Joseph School.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, the former Florence Maher; three sons: Thomas Bender Jr., Bellefonte; James Bender, Watsontown; and John Bender, San Diego; two daugthers: Mrs. Dominic (Kathleen) Manocchio, Leesburg, Va.; Mrs. Mark (Betsy) Pringle, Hudson, Ohio; 26 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Catherine Curall of Florida.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church, 18 E. Center St., Danville, with the Rev. William Weary, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in the church Cemetery under the direction of the Brady Funeral Home Inc., 320 Church St., Danville.

Patricia A. Grasley

Funeral services for Patricia A. Grasley, 31 Stone Church Road, Berwick, will be 11 a.m. Saturday from Mayo Funeral Home, 110 Chestnut St., Berwick, with the Rev. Myron Jones officiating. Burial will be in Sunbury Cemetery, Sunbury.

Mrs. Grasley was a cook at various restaurants for more than 30 years.
