Elsie (Hurvitz) Sachs, 90, of Wayland, Mass. and formerly of Providence and Lake Worth, Fla., died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002. She was the wife of the late Elliot Sachs, to whom she was married for 59 years. She leaves a daughter, Judy Sachs Shulman of Barrington; two sons, Coleman R. Sachs of Rossmoor, Calif. and David H. Sachs of Newton, Mass.; three sisters, Ann Hurvitz Maas of Silver Spring, Md., Lee Hurvitz Michaels of Miami, Fla. and Esther Hurvitz Josephson of Charlottesville, Va.; nine grandchildren, Carolyn Sachs Gomberg, Todd Sachs, Scott Shulman, Wendy Shulman Donner, Michelle Sachs Limaj, Jessica Sachs, Karin Sachs, Teviah Sachs and Deborah Shulman; and four great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Saul Hurvitz and Ruth Hurvitz. Services were held Sunday, Dec. 29, at the Riverside Memorial Chapel in New York, N.Y.

Dorothy K. Hamada
Taught school in Hawaii
Dorothy K. Hamada, 94, of Wildflower Road and formerly of Honolulu, died Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at the Hallworth House in Providence. She was the wife of the late Glenn Y. Hamada. Born in Kona, Hawaii, a daughter of the late Senmetsu and Tora (Onaka) Ishikawa, she lived most of her life in Hawaii before moving to Providence four years ago. Mrs. Hamada taught science in seventh grade in Hawaii for 34 years, retiring in 1964. She graduated high school in Hawaii in 1928, and from the University of Hawaii in 1934. She was a member of the Hui Hookipa Club and Hui Lokahi, both in Hawaii. She leaves a daughter, Corinne H. Tan of Barrington; a brother, Tomo Ishikawa, and a sister, Adelaide Yoshi Kimura, both in Hawaii; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A service of remembrance and thanksgiving will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, in the Church of the Crossroads, Honolulu.

Carlo M. Larisa
Served in Pacific during World War II
Carlo M. Larisa, 85, of 281 Waseca Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2002, at the Roger Williams Medical Center in Providence. He was the husband of Philomena (Martini) Larisa, to whom he had been married for 58 years. Born in Barrington, a son of the late Carlo and Terese (Palermo) Larisa, he lived in Barrington his entire life. Mr. Larisa was a letter carrier with the United States Postal Service, working in Barrington for over 22 years before his retirement in 1979. He was a member of the National Letter Carriers Association, and later worked as a bus monitor for Barrington elementary schools. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving as a sergeant with the 172nd Infantry Division. He was among the first American landing parties to attack Japanese strongholds in the Solomon Islands. He served aboard the President Coolidge, which struck a mine and sank, and he survived by swimming to the New Hebrides shore. He also served in Guadalcanal, Rendova, Munda and New Georgia Island. He was lifelong communicant of Holy Angels Church and served as an usher. He was a member of the Sunset Golf League at the Swansea Country Club, and was also a ranger there. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Anthony C. Larisa of Barrington; two sisters, Anne Moretti and Helen DiFanti, both of Cranston; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. He was a brother of the late John, Frank, and Lucy Larisa, Irene Sylvia, Dana Jasparro, Antonetta Martin and Angelina Volloro. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 28, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Angels Church. Burial with military honors followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

Antonetta Pompeii
Former resident of Barrington
Antonetta (Ruggieri) Pompeii, 87, of Cranston and formerly of Barrington, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Morgan Health Center in Johnston. She was the wife of Louis Pompeii. Born in Bristol, a daughter of the late Carmine and Maria (Viafiore) Ruggieri, she had lived in Barrington for 50 years before moving to Cranton seven years ago. Mrs. Pompeii worked for the state Department of Education as a supervisor for its lunch program for 28 years, retiring in 1980. She was a culinary-arts enthusiast, and enjoyed traveling. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Chris Pompeii of Cranston; a sister, Ruth Romano of Plainfield, Conn.; two granddaughters, a grandson and three great-grandchildren. She was a sister of the late John and Frank Ruggieri. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 24, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren, with a Mass of Christian burial in Holy Angels Church, Barrington. Burial followed in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Providence.

Joseph Pietruszka
Navy veteran was born in Barrington
Joseph Pietruszka, 86, of Providence, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Helen (Stachowiak) Pietruszka. Born in Barrington, a son of the late John and Katarzina (Klimek) Pietruszka, he had lived in Providence for 53 years. Mr. Pietruszka was a parts manager for Hinds and Stone Chevrolet in Attleboro, and several other Chevrolet dealerships, for 30 years before retiring in 1978. He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II, and an avid gardener and bird watcher. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Joseph P. Pietruszka of Johnston; a brother, Frank Pietruszka of Rehoboth; and two sisters, Leona Hitchin of Barrington and Rose Pontbriant of Ventura, Calif. He was a brother of the late Benedict Pietruszka, Emily Duzik and Veronica Cabral. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 23, from the Supinski and Borrelli Funeral Home in Providence, with a concelebrated Mass of Christian burial in St. Adalbert Church, Providence. Burial followed in St. Ann Cemetery in Cranston.

Marion E. Pollard
Homemaker, lived in Warren 15 years
Marion E. Pollard, 78, of Child Street, died Saturday, Dec. 21, 2002, at the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center of Home and Hospice Care in Providence. She had been the wife of the late Walker Pollard and of the late John S. Remington Sr. Born in Cranston on May 10, 1924, she was a daughter of the late Jerome T. and Elizabeth (Warburton) Higginbotham. She had lived in Pawtucket before moving to Warren 15 years ago. Mrs. Pollard was a homemaker. She leaves three daughters, Linda Jaworek of Rehoboth, Mass., Elizabeth W. Remington of Pawtucket and Vicki A. Medeiros of Cumberland; two sons, John S. Remington Jr. of Pawtucket and Bruce P. Remington of Hopkinton; and eight grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Bertrom, Eugene and Jerome Higginbotham, Katherine Kinnenburgh , Martha Anthony, Doris Carpenter and Mabel Allen. A service of Holy Eucharist will be celebrated in remembrance of Mrs. Pollard on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 11 a.m., in Christ Church, 1643 Lonsdale Avenue in Lincoln.

Theodore H. Arnold

Theodore H. Arnold, 85, of Child Street, Warren, died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at the Crestwood Nursing Home in Warren. He was the husband of Doris M. (Pagel) Arnold of Warren. Born in Stoneham, Mass., a son of the late Robert E. and Frances (Hewitt) Arnold, he had lived in Warren since March, prior to that living in East Providence for five years and East Hartford, Conn.., for 30 years. He was a process engineer for the Pratt & Whitney Company in Hartford for 30 years, retiring in 1972. A lifetime member of the National Ski Patrol and the Manchester Ski Club, most of Mr. Arnold's patrol and skiing activities centered around Okemo Mountain in Ludlow, Vt. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Barbara R. Tabor of Barrington; two sons, Harry E. Arnold of Brattleboro, Vt. and Theodore H. Arnold Jr. of Windsor, Conn..; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Melvin, Robert and Richard Arnold. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, Providence Corps, 756 Eddy St., Providence R.I. 02903. Funeral and burial services were private. Jesuina F. Dutra, 87, formerly of Everett Street, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2002, at the Grace Barker Nursing Center. She was the wife of the late Francisco M. Dutra. Born in Pereira, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Jose Ferreira and Maria Isabel (Fraga) Ormonda. Mrs. Dutra was a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She leaves three sons, Francisco Dutra in Portugal, Edward Dutra in Canada and Manuel Dutra of Cranston; six daughters, Maria Lourdes Batista, Maria Vierra, Maria F. Silva, Jesuina Simao, and Natalia Rocha, all of Warren, and Linda Rogalski of Newark, N.J.; two sisters, Ermelinda Simoes and Conceicao Silveira, both of San Jose, Calif.; 25 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. Her funeral was on Thursday, Dec. 26, from the William J. Smith & Son Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. She was buried in St. Mary of the Bay Cemetery.

Richard Cordeiro
Played pro baseball in Braves organization
Richard Cordeiro, 69, of Eastover Road, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital. He was the former husband of Margaret Cordeiro of Wallingford, Conn. Born in Bristol, he was the son of the late John and Mary (Tavares) Cordeiro. He lived in Portsmouth for five years, previously living in Bristol for 34 years and North Haven, Conn., for 30 years. He graduated from Colt Memorial High School in 1951 and the University of Rhode Island in 1961. He was a traffic manager for Yale University in New Haven, Conn. for 30 years before retiring in 1991. He was a Private First Class in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Germany from 1953 to 1955. A former professional baseball player with the Milwaukee Braves organization, Mr. Cordeiro was inducted into the Bristol Athletic Hall of Fame. He was a member of Bristol's American Legion Championship baseball team that went to the national finals. He was involved with youth baseball in North Haven for many years. Mr. Cordeiro was also a timekeeper for Roger Williams University's Men's and Women's basketball teams. Mr. Cordeiro leaves a son, Geoffrey Cordeiro of Southwick, Mass.; two brothers, Ernest Cordeiro of East Hampton, Conn. and Raymond Cordeiro of Bristol; and three grandchildren, Ashlee, Taylor and Amanda Cordeiro of Southwick, Mass. Mr. Cordeiro was the father of the late Karen Cordeiro and the brother of the late John, Arthur and Robert Cordeiro and Evelyn Rainey. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at 8:30 a.m. from the George C. Lima Funeral Home with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery.

John W. Stare
Band director in Middletown schools
John Weaver Stare, 85, of 175 Massachusetts Blvd., Portsmouth, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at home. He was the husband of June Ellen (Brown) Davis Stare, and the late Dorothy (Poff) Stare. Born in York, Pa. on Oct. 29, 1917, he was a son of the late Claude and Katherine (Weaver) Stare. Mr. Stare had worked as the band director for Middletown public schools for 20 years until his retirement in 1979. He was the founder and organizer of the Newport Concert Band and was its first conductor. Mr. Stare was an Army veteran of World War II and attained the rank of captain. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John M. Stare of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Rose-Anne Costigan of Fort Myers, Fla.; two sisters, Violet Keathley of Mexia, Texas, and Roberta Metz of Clearwater, Fla.; and three grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ruth Bostic. His funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 21, in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Burial was in St. Mary's Churchyard. Phyllis R. Ryan
Sixth-grade teacher, grade leader in Middletown
Phyllis R. (Carey) Ryan, 80, of 167 Taylor Road, Portsmouth, died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Newport Hospital. She was the wife of the late John M. Ryan. Born in Johnston on Feb. 24, 1922, a daughter of the late George H. and Caroline L. (Heffernan) Carey, she had lived in Needham, Mass., before moving to Portsmouth. Mrs. Ryan was a sixth-grade teacher for the Joseph H. Gaudet Middle School, Middletown, from 1968 until 1988, and had been a grade leader at the school for her last several years there. She was a graduate of St. Xavier Academy, Providence, and Rhode Island College, Class of 1942. She was a parishioner of St. Mary's Church, Newport. Mrs. Ryan enjoyed reading and traveling. She leaves a son, Dr. J. Mark Ryan of Portsmouth; two daughters, Dr. Carol M. and Dr. Susan C. Ryan, both of Portsmouth; and three grandchildren. She was the sister of the late George H. Carey Jr. Her funeral was held Wednesday, Jan. 22, from the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, Newport, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Mary's Church, Newport. John T. Hennessey
Former engineer, Vietnam War veteran
John Taylor Hennessey, 63, of 104 Pleasant St., Portsmouth, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at home. He was the husband of Kathleen (Dutra) Hennessey. Born in Boston, he was a son of the late John J. and Helen (Taylor) Hennessey. He had been the senior principal engineer at Logicon Inc. for six years and was responsible for the installation of anti-submarine instrumentation aboard many Navy vessels, and had previously been the branch head of the Naval Underwater Center for over 20 years. Mr. Hennessey was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War, serving as a lieutenant ASW officer, navigator and weapons officer aboard the Hugh Davis, DD-709. He was a 1960 graduate of Tufts University, with a degree in electrical engineering. He was also a member of the North End Club in Middletown. In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Karen Hennessey of Boston, Kathleen Bouthillier of Mansfield, Mass., and Susan Frost of Middletown; a stepson, Paul Marques and a stepdaughter, Terrie Dugan, both of Newport; and a grandson and three step-granddaughters. A memorial service was held Wednesday, Jan. 22 in Connors Funeral Home in Portsmouth. Burial was private.

Patricia A. Sherman
Worked for Eastern Airlines, Jamestown Distributors
Patricia A. Sherman, 64, of Clinton Avenue, Jamestown, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at home. She was the wife of the late Thomas H. Sherman and the former wife of the late Victor Michalik. Born in Berkeley, Mass., a daughter of the late Francis L. and Margaret M. (McIntire) Jones, she was raised in Jamestown, then moved to Brooklyn, N.Y., before returing to Jamestown in 1970. Mrs. Sherman worked for Jamestown Distributors for 11 years before retiring in 1999. She worked for Eastern Airlines before starting a family. She was an avid bird watcher. She leaves three sons, Michael Michalik of Newport, Or., and Christopher and Paul Michalik, both of Jamestown; a daughter, Kathleen Little of Portsmouth; two brothers, Frank Jones of Toledo, Or., and Paul Jones of Jamestown; three sisters, Ann Drury, Judy Albaugh and Peggy Rice, all of Jamestown, and four grandchildren. Her funeral and burial will be private. Arrangements are by the Fagan Funeral Home.

Oscar J. Paradis
Former engineer and Realtor
Oscar J. Paradis, 87, of 750 Davol St., Fall River, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at St. Anne's Hospital. He was the husband of Irene (Pineault) Paradis, his wife of 61 years. Born in Fall River, a son of the late Odilon and Alpheda (Lavoie) Paradis, he had lived in Tiverton for 18 years before moving back to Fall River 20 years ago. A graduate of BMC Durfee High School, Herrick's Institute, the Bradford Durfee Technical Institute and Navy Engineering School, he had been a mechanical engineering technician in the quality evaluation lab of the Naval Underwater Systems Center in Newport for 31 years before retiring in 1972. He had received a meritorious award for outstanding performance. Mr. Paradis was a real estate broker licensed in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and was very active in the real estate market until 1982. He was a member of the Naval Beneficial Association and an honorary life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Paradis was a member of the Holy Name Society and the Senior Citizens Club of St. Anne Church. He was a fourth-degree life member of the Knights of Columbus, Assembly 1816, in Tiverton, and a third-degree life member of Knights of Columbus Council 4753, also in Tiverton. In addition to his wife, he leaves a daughter, Rachel M. Paradis of East Providence and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Alice Cory, Bertha D'Amour and Albert, Leigh and Jean Baptiste Paradis. His funeral will be held Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003, at 9:30 a.m. from the Auclair Funeral Home, 690 South Main St., Fall River, with a funeral Mass in St. Anne Church, South Main St., Fall River. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum.

Anthony 'Tony' N. Nunes
Postal superintendent, active in veterans groups
Anthony "Tony" N. Nunes, 77, died Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003, at Morton Hospital, Taunton, Mass. He was the husband of Frances (Catalano) Nunes to whom he had been married for 33 years. Born in Warren, he was a son of the late Norbert M. and Lidia (Pontes) Nunes. He was a lifelong Warren resident. Mr. Nunes was the superintendent of postal operations in the Bristol Post Office and had also worked in the Providence and Warren Post Offices. A longtime member of the Warren School Committee, he had served on that board for 25 years. A Navy veteran of World War II, Mr. Nunes was a past commander of VFW Post 122, a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, past commander of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Chapter 13, past deputy commander of the Rhode Island VFW, and past deputy commander of the Rhode Island DAV. He was also past president of the United Veterans Council of Rhode Island and past president of the Eastern States Conference of Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Nunes had served as chaplain for American Legion Post 11 in Warren, and had been a member the order of the Trench Rats, the 40 &8, AMVETS in Bristol and the Warren and Bristol Veterans Councils. A former cubmaster for Warren Pack 25, Mr. Nunes was a member of the Portuguese American Club and the German American Club, both in Warren. He belonged to the United Brothers Lodge 13 of the International Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodge in Bristol. He was a former member of the board of directors of East Bay Mental Health, and had also served on the Governor's Advisory Board for the Rhode Island Veterans' Home in Bristol. He was a member of the former Sowams Fire Company, Engine 4, in Warren. He was a communicant of St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Warren. Besides his wife, he leaves four sons, Norbert Nunes of Santa Cruz, Calif., Kevin Nunes of Vancouver, Wash., Jerry Lawrence of Windham, N.H., and Jonathan Lawrence of Warren; five daughters, Deborah Cardoza of Warwick, Linda Corbett of Frankfurt, Ind., Susan Galligan of Cranston, Dawn Wardyga of Barrington and Debra Romano of East Providence; a sister, Lydia DiSalvo of Bristol; 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was also the grandfather of the late Jason David Wardyga, and the brother of the late Mary DeFelice. A funeral with military honors was held for Mr. Nunes on Monday, Jan. 20, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home, Warren, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Thomas the Apostle Church. He was buried in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bristol. Miguel G. Ferreira

Miguel G. Ferreira, 72, of Mt. Hope Avenue, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at his home. He was the husband of Isaltina (Matos) Ferreira. Born in Faial, Açores, he was the son of the late Miguel and Anna Emilia (Gomes) Ferreira. He lived in Faial for 29 years, Rehoboth for six years and Bristol for the last 27 years. He was a custodian at Brown University for 14 years, retiring in 1993. He was also a member of the Bristol Sports Club. Besides his wife, Mr. Ferreira leaves three daughters, Teresa Medeiros of Bristol, Ligia Garcia of San Jose, Calif., and Susan Cordeiro of Portsmouth; two sons, Horacio Ferreira of Scotrun, Pa., and Michael Ferreira of Bristol; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was the brother of the late Jose Ferreira of East Providence, Antonio Ferreira and Palmira Duarte of Salinas, Calif., Theresa Andrade of Canada and Maria Medeiros of Faial. Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 24, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home at 8 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Sister Eleanore F. Calouro
A Sister of St. Dorothy; raised in Bristol
Sister Eleanor F. Calouro, S.S.D., 66, of Taunton, Mass., died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at Wedgemore Rehabilitation Center in Taunton. Born in Providence and raised in Bristol, she was the daughter of the late Moses S. and Elsie M. (Nunes) Calouro. A graduate of Bristol High School in 1955, she entered the Religious Sisters of St. Dorothy on Sept. 24, 1955, making her first profession on Sept. 27, 1958. She received her final vows on Sept. 27, 1964. Sister Calouro received her bachelor of science degree in education from the former Catholic Teachers College in Providence in 1971 and her master of arts in pastoral care from Emmanuel College in Boston in 1978. She received her certification from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains in 1979. Sister Calouro taught at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel School in New Bedford; St. Patrick's School and the Academy of St. Dorothy, both in Staten Island, N.Y.; and St. Francis Xavier School in East Providence. She went on to the Pastoral Care Ministry at Norwich State Hospital in Norwich, Conn., the St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee, Minn., and her final assignment was at the Southern Ohio Medical Center in Portsmouth, Ohio, from 1985 to her retirement to Villa Fatima in Taunton in 2001. She leaves two sisters, Theresa A. Sweat of Santa Rose, Calif., and Julia A. Calouro of Mendocina, Calif.; three brothers, Moses J. Calouro of Bristol, John H. Calouro of Kennesaw, Ga., and Edwin P. Calouro of Bristol; several nieces and nephews and a great-niece and a great-nephew. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 22, with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Michael G. Erickson
World War II Navy veteran
Michael G. Erickson, 86, of Mason Avenue, died Friday, Jan. 17, 2003, at Silver Creek Manor. He was the husband of Eugenia G. (Borges) Erickson and the late Mary (Norris) Erickson. Mr. Erickson lived in Bristol for 11 years. He also lived in Bethlehem, Conn., and Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a welder for Waterbury Rolling Mills Incorporated before retiring. He served in the Navy during World War II. Besides his wife he leaves two sons, Michael Erickson of Litchfield, Conn. and Kevin Erickson of Bethlehem, Conn.; a brother, John Erickson of Brooklyn; five stepchildren; four grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at the convenience of the family in Connecticut.

Emily (Fawcett) Avery Ruggiero, 90, of Bristol, died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. She was the wife of Nicholas Ruggiero and the late Fred J. Avery. Born in Acushnet, Mass., she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel (Hamer) Fawcett and lived in Acushnet for more than 50 years. Since her marriage in 1989, she lived in Bristol. She was an Episcopalian for many years before joining the Catholic Church and was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star. Formerly active with the Acushnet Grange, she was employed with the former Gaudette's Pavilion, Norman's Bakery and Shaw's Market. She leaves a son, Fred John Avery and his wife Carolyn of Mattapoisett, Mass., and a grandson, Matthew Todd Avery of Belmont, Mass. Her funeral will be Monday, Jan. 27, at 11 a.m. at the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford, Mass. Burial will follow in Acushnet Cemetery.

Agnes F. (Foley) Stanzione, 84, of 69 Church St., died Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of the late Ralph F. Stanzione. Born in Bar Harbor, Maine, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mary Jane (Osler) Foley. Mrs. Stanzione was a homemaker. Mrs. Stanzione was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. She leaves two sons, Ralph M. Stanzione of Tolland, Conn. and Timothy M. Stanzione of Bristol; a daughter, Charlotte M. Whiteside of Bristol; four grandchildren, Leanne M. Faris of Fairfield, Conn., Angela M. and Timothy J. Stanzione and Kyle D. Remy, all of Bristol; a great-granddaughter, Camryn Lee Faris of Fairfield, Conn.; and a sister, Josephine Richardson of Otter Creek, Maine. She was also the sister of the late Dale, William and Francis Foley. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Jan. 21, with a Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. The Rev. Giacomo D. Capoverdi was the celebrant and homilist for the Mass. Offertory gifts were presented by her granddaughters Leanne M. Faris and Angela M. Stanzione. Music for the Mass was provided by daughter-in-law Diane Stanzione, flutist, Lisa Mello, organist/soloist, and Wendy O'Brien, soloist. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery where Fr. Capoverdi read the committal prayers. The following served as pallbearers: sons Timothy M. and Ralph M. Stanzione, grandsons Timothy J. Stanzione and Kyle D. Remy, and David J. Nunes. Civic leader, former Barrington resident
Walter Perry Jr., 87, of Laurelmead in Providence, died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Miriam Hospital in Providence. He was the husband of the late Katharine (Webb) Perry; they had been married for 59 years. Born in New Haven, Conn., a son of the late Walter and Elizabeth (Morgan) Perry, he moved to Rhode Island in 1950 and lived in Newport and Barrington before moving to Providence 10 years ago. A 1936 graduate of Yale University with a major in economics, he completed his education as a night student at the New York University Graduate School of Business Administration. Mr. Perry was a United States Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having enlisted in 1940. He served more than two years active duty during the war. Mr. Perry began his career in the trust department of Guaranty Trust Company of New York City, where he worked while completing his MBA and until he was called up for active duty. After returning from World War II, he worked for the American Insurance Co. in Newark, N.J., as an investment officer. In 1950, he had was hired as an investment officer at the Providence Washington Insurance Co., where he was to go on to become executive vice president and chief financial officer. He later served as a senior vice president and trust officer at the former Old Stone Bank. Mr. Perry was an original member of the State Investment Commission, on which he had served under four governors ' two Republicans and two Democrats. He also served as a director of the National Health and Welfare Retirement Association, the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority, the United Way, the Episcopal Diocesan Trust, St. Andrews School, the former Providence Lying-In Hospital, now Women & Infants Hospital, and the former Mary C. Wheeler School, now the Wheeler School. Mr. Perry was a past president of the Providence Society of Financial Analysts. He leaves two daughters, Nancy P. Harris of East Providence and Patricia P. Merritt of Natick, Mass.; a son, Walter Perry III of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Elizabeth P. Marsh of Prouts Neck, Maine; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a date and time to be announced.
