(Rego) Souza. Besides his parents, survivors include a brother, Carl J. Souza, and his wife, Erica; maternal grandparents Joseph and Jeannette (Kruczek) Rego of Westport; paternal grandparents Louis B. and Georgina (Rego) Souza of Maine and Dorothy (Walsh) Botelho of Westport; a niece; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and a godson, Ronald Botelho. He was the grandson of the late George Botelho. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m.. on Friday, March 22, 2002, at the Potter Funeral Home, 81 Reed Road, Westport. Burial will be private.

Served in Rhode Island National Guard
Joseph P. Souza, 59, of Seaconnet Avenue, Portsmouth, died Friday, July 26, 2002, after an illness. He was the companion of Betsy Bottari of Portsmouth. Born in Fall River, he was the son of the late Joseph and Antonetta (Faria) Souza. Mr. Souza served in the Rhode Island National Guard. He leaves two sons, Philip Souza Rechner of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Jason Souza Rechner of San Diego, Calif.; a brother, Paul Souza of Lima, Peru; a half sister, Branca Christina Souza of Santa Maria, Azores; and three grandchildren. His funeral was private.

Manuel F. Souza
Longtime resident, World War II vet
Manuel F. Souza, 84, of 43 Hilton St., Tiverton, died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at St. Anne's Hospital in Fall River. He was the husband of Mary (Martin) Souza. Born in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Jesse F. and Anna Souza. He had lived in Tiverton for the last 60 years. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a machine operator for the Bristol Knitting Mills. He was a communicant of Holy Ghost Parish. During World War II, Mr. Souza served in the United States Army as a fifth-grade technician under General Patton. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Campaign Ribbon and European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon. He was also a charter member of the VFW, Post 5392 in Tiverton and a member of the Cup Defenders of Bristol. In addition to his wife, he leaves two daughters, Mary Pauline Faria and Catherine Ann Souza, both of Tiverton; a brother, John Souza of Portsmouth; two sisters, Madeline Silvia of Middletown and Florence Medeiros of Bristol; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was the brother of the late Jesse, Dennis and Joseph Souza, Mary Augustine, Angelina Venancio and Emily Marshall. His funeral will be held Friday, August 2 at 8 a.m. from the Pocasset Memorial Funeral Home, 462 Main Road, Tiverton, with a Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Ghost Church, Judson Street, Tiverton, at 9 a.m. Burial will be at Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Main Road, Tiverton.

Marguerite Souza, 84, of Oak Hill Nursing Home, Pawtucket, formerly of Carousel Drive, East Providence, died Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002, at the home. Born in Warren, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Ethyl (Stokes) Doyle. She was raised in Warren, moved to East Providence n the 1930's and had lived in Pawtucket for the past six years, Ms. Souza was the owner of the former Marguerite Powers Dresses in Providence. She leaves a daughter, Sharon Duquette of Riverside; four grandchildren, Mellisa Simpson, David Tierney and Robert Duquette, all of East Providence, and Karalyn Duquette of west Hollywood, Calif. She was the mother of the late Carolyn Tierney, twin sister of the late Myrtis Robinson and sister of the late Helen Orth. Her funeral was private.

Maria C. deMedeiros
Born in the Açores, lived here for 27 years
Maria C. deMedeiros, 81, of Shaws Lane died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of the late Manuel I. deMedeiros. Born in Santa Barbara, Sao Miguel, the Açores, Mrs. deMedeiros was the daughter of the late Antone C. and Maria Rosa Branco. Mrs. deMedeiros lived in the Açores for 55 years and lived in Bristol for 27 years. She worked at American Tourister Company of Warren for six years before retiring in 1981. Mrs. deMedeiros leaves three daughters, Rosa Pacheco of Warren, and Lurdes Chora and Maria doRego of Canada; four sons, Nicolau deMedeiros of Canada and Jose, Manuel and Armando deMedeiros of Bristol; two sisters, Conceicao Sousa of Canada and Mariana deJesus of Lisbon, Portugal; 19 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was the sister of the late Antone and Joao Branco. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 19, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth Church. The Rev. Fernando Cabral was the celebrant of the Mass. Maria deMedeiros and Paula Reiche were the readers. Nicole Pereira, Kristin Pacheco, Carlos deMedeiros and Armand deMedeiros presented offertory gifts. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, where the Rev. Cabral offered committal prayers. George deMedeiros, Paul deMedeiros, Hermano doRego, Jeff Reiche, John Pereira and Armando deMedeiros were pallbearers.

Elsie Faria
Longtime resident, leaves son in Bristol
Elsie Faria, 70, of Maple Lane died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. She was the wife of Raymond R. Faria. Born in Fall River, Mrs. Faria was the daughter of the late Manuel and Mary (Ponte) Rezendes. Mrs. Faria lived in Bristol for 52 years after moving from Warren, where she lived for 18 years. She was employed at G Tech for 10 years before retiring in 1999. Mrs. Faria leaves three sons, Raymond R. Faria Jr. of San Clemente, Calif., Steven G. Faria of North Miami Beach, Fla., and Michael A. Faria of Bristol; two brothers, Antone "Cal" Rezendes of California and Manuel Rezendes Jr. of Florida; a sister, Rosalie Monast of Warwick and nine grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Keith M. Faria. Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 21, at 8 a.m. from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, 367 High St., with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Church, 577 Wood St. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.

Raymond Medeiros
National Guard sergeant, lived here for many years
Raymond Medeiros, 61, of Fall River and formerly of Bristol died Saturday, March 16, 2002, at St. Anne's Hospital, Fall River. Born in East Providence, a son of the late Manuel Rose Grace (Rosa) Medeiros, he had lived in Bristol for many years before moving to Fall River. He worked as a service technician at Forest Property Management Inc. of East Providence for the past several years and had previously worked for the former Almacs Supermarkets. He was a staff sergeant in the Rhode Island Army National Guard. He leaves two daughters, Kristine Foster of Warren and Lynn-Marie DaPonte of Bristol; his former wife, Suzanne Almeida of Bristol; a stepbrother, Joseph Francis of Johnston and two grandchildren, Timothy C. and Amanda L. Foster of Warren. He was also the stepbrother of the late Anthony Francis. The funeral service and burial will be private.

Marion H. Litchfield
Longtime Tiverton resident was avid gardener
Marion H. Litchfield, 77, of Riverside Drive, Tiverton, died Tuesday, March 12, 2002, at the Manitee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton, Florida. She was the wife of Alvin M. Litchfield. Born in Lancaster, Penn., on Feb. 5, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Charlotte (Schemburger) Hoffman. She lived in Tiverton for 55 years, previously residing in Connecticut. Mrs. Litchfield was vice-president of Litchfield Construction in Tiverton and Litchfield Pools in Westport for many years, before retiring 12 years ago. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Tiverton and was active in many church groups. An avid gardener, Mrs. Litchfield was known to drive with a bucket and shovel in her car so she could stop by the roadside if she spotted flowering plants, especially Gerber daisies, of which she was particularly fond. She was devoted to her family. Besides her husband, she leaves three sons, Wayne M. Litchfield of Charlotte, N.C., and Kim E. Litchfield and Jameson W. Litchfield, both of Tiverton; a daughter, Sandra Almeida of Raynham, Mass.; two brothers, Richard Hoffman of Southington, Conn., and Robert Hoffman of Hampton, Conn.; a sister, Leah Barnes of Walingford, Conn.; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Edward, Warren and James Hoffman, Beatrice Toothe and Doris Bovini. A funeral service for Mrs. Litchfield was held on Saturday, March 16, in Central Baptist Church. She was buried in Pocasset Hill Cemetery, Tiverton.

William J. Mack
Computer analyst lived in Portsmouth
William Joseph Mack, 41, of 42 Albert St., Portsmouth, died Sunday, March 17, 2002, at Newport Hospital. Born in Bremerhaven, Germany, on Sept. 8, 1960, he was the son of the late Commander John Mack, U.S.N., and the late Theresa Mack. Mr. Mack worked as a computer analyst at the former Putman Financial and Liberty Financial, now Fleet Financial, for many years. He was a graduate of Portsmouth High School, Class of 1978 and a graduate of Roger Williams University, Class of 1985. He was a communicant of St. Barnabas Church in Portsmouth. Mr. Mack was a member of the Newport Dog Training School, the Colonial Bassett Hound Rescue League and Fort Adams Trust. He was an active supporter of the Robert Potter League for Animals in Middletown. He leaves a sister, Maria H. Mack of Wakefield. His funeral is on Thursday, March 21, at 9 a.m., from Connors Funeral Home, 55 West Main Road, Portsmouth, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m., in St. Barnabas Church, 1697 East Main Road. Retired teacher's aide leaves husband in Portsmouth
Carmela Katherine Lappino, 87, of Village House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Newport, died Thursday, March 14, 2002, at home. She was the wife of Vincent J. Lappino of Portsmouth. Born in Elizabeth, N.J., she was the daughter of the late John and Giovanina (Tanucci) Trabachino. Mrs. Lappino was a teacher's aide in the Elizabeth public school system before retiring. She was a member of St. Anthony Church in Elizabeth and the St. Anne's Society and St. Joseph's Society. She enjoyed crocheting. Besides her husband, she leaves a daughter, V. Jean Stack-Yablonski of Westfield, N.J.; a granddaughter, Lauren H. Carson, and a grandson, Andrew P. Carson, both of Portsmouth. Funeral and burial are private.

Social worker at Council on Aging
Patricia Ann Lucianno, 60, of Gifford Road, Westport, died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 5, 1942, in Fall River, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary (Ovilla) Soares. Mrs. Lucianno had been a social worker for the Council on Aging. She leaves three daughters, Ginger (Lee Ann) Lucianno of Westport and Lynn Marie Lucianno and Barbara Perez, both of Fall River; a son, Victor A. Lucianno of Fall River, and five grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Patricia A. Lucianno. A funeral Mass will be held Monday, April 1, at Holy Rosary Church, Beattie Street, Fall River. Arrangements are by Boulé Funeral Home in Fall River. Interment will be private.

Dr. Philemon Truesdale Marvell II
Physician, owner, operated Newport Family Practice
Dr. Philemon "P.T." Truesdale Marvell II, 33, of 18 Perry St., Newport, and West Main Road, Little Compton, died Saturday, March 23, 2002, unexpectedly at his home. Born on Oct. 15, 1968, in Fort Benning, Ga., he was a son of Dr. Philemon "Captain" Truesdale Marvell, owner and operator of many walk-in clinics in Newport and Southeastern Massachusetts, and Rhonda (Moore) Marvell, both of Little Compton. He was the great-grandson of the late Minna (Dickinson) Truesdale and the late Dr. Philemon E. Truesdale, noted area surgeon and founder of the former Truesdale Hospital and Truesdale Clinic in Fall River. He was the great-great-nephew of Alice Brayton of Green Animals, a part of the Newport Preservation Society in Portsmouth. He lived in Bordeaux, France, for seven years, in Little Compton all his life, and in Newport for the past four years. Dr. Marvell owned and operated Newport Family Practice and worked with his father at Tru Med in Fall River and Hyannis, Mass. A physician for nearly 10 years, he loved his profession and his thousands of patients. Dr. Marvell practiced in the Newport-Fall River area at Charleton Memorial, St. Anne's and Newport hospitals. At the same time, he conducted medical research and published many medical articles. He founded the Total Health Care Fair in Newport and established Women's Health Care and Medical Minute on the Newport radio station, and made house calls as well as boat calls. He attended preschool and first grade in Bordeaux, Wilbur & McMahon Schools in Little Compton, Friends Academy in Dartmouth through Grade 9, Fountain Valley School in Colorado Springs and graduated from Providence Country Day School with national honors in physics. A 1988 honors graduate in physics from the University of Vermont, he attended the University of Grenada Medical School, did his residency at Brown Medical School Pawtucket Memorial Hospital and became a certified medical doctor in internal medicine. He was a sailor and aviator with a private pilot's license, a member of the Sakonnet Yacht Club, Bailey's Beach in Newport, Newport Preservation Society and International Yacht Restoration School. He was an honorary member of the New York Yacht Club. Dr. Marvell also worked for the Department of Disabled Services and was board eligible for addictive medicine and was a medical review officer. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Edward Brayton "Ted" Marvell of Newport; grandparents, Elinor T. Marvell of Tiverton and Mary Tugwell of Florida; aunts and uncles, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Wiggins and Tom Moore of Florida, Mr. and Mrs. Chandler Kirwin of Canada and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Marvell of Virginia, and several cousins. He was a grandson of the late Thomas Brayton Marvell, Dr. Frank Tugwell and Avery D. Moore. A celebration of his life will be on Saturday, March 30, at 11 a.m. at United Congregational Church on the Little Compton Commons. Burial will be private. Contributions in his memory may be made to the International Yacht Restoration School, Sakonnet Yacht Club, Sail Newport, hospitals he serviced, Wilbur House or Green Animals of Newport Preservation Society.

Edna Mae Palumbo
St. Jean parishioner, lifelong resident of Warren
Edna Mae (Trombley) Palumbo, 90, of Schoolhouse Road, Warren, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Antonio Palumbo. Born in Hebronville, Mass., she was a daughter of the late George E. and Mary Alice (Harris) Trombley. She lived in Warren her entire life. She was a homemaker and had worked in the factory of the former Premier Thread in Bristol for 10 years, having retired in 1977. She was a communicant of St. Jean Baptiste Church. She leaves five daughters, Pearl Sousa of Bristol, Dolores McClure, Jacqueline Busse and Ann Marie Primiano, all of Warren, and Cynthia Young of Clairmont, N.H.; two brothers, Carl Trombley of Warren and Joseph Trombley of East Providence; a sister, Blanche Fontes of East Providence; and 25 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild. Her funeral was held yesterday, March 27, from William J. Smith and Son Funeral Home, Warren, followed by a Mass of Christian burial in St. Jean Baptiste Church, Warren. Funeral services for Norberto "Bert" Couto were held on Thursday, March 21, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian burial followed at St. Elizabeth's Church. The Rev. Joseph D. World War II veteran, 56-year resident of Bristol
Joseph Ralph Faraone, 78, of Valley Drive died Monday, March 25, 2002, at Roger Williams Hospital. He was the husband of the late Clara (Correia) Faraone. Born in Chicago, he was a son of the late Joseph and Rose (Loverde) Faraone. He lived in Bristol for 56 years and wintered in Florida since moving from Chicago. He worked for Kaiser Aluminum Corp. for 32 years before retiring in 1973. He was a member of the Portuguese Independent Band and Bristol Elks Lodge 1860. Mr. Faraone served with the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He leaves a son, Joseph T. Faraone of Bristol; a daughter, Rena Salvas of West Warwick; a brother, Christopher Faraone of McHenry, Ill.; a sister, Rose Aldini of Oak Brook, Ill.; three grandchildren, Kristin Trexler, Amy Rice and Seth Faraone; and a great-grandson, Michael Joseph Trexler. He was a brother of the late Isabel Serpico. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 30, at 8 a.m. from the George C. Susan Paradiso, 75, of Market Street, Swansea, died Friday, March 22, 2002, at home. Born in Providence, she was the wife of Nicholas Paradiso. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Paradiso leaves a foster brother, Dennis Botelho of Mystic, Conn.; a foster sister, Mary Silva of Bristol, and three grandchildren. She was the mother of the late Judith Susan Moe. Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 27, from the George C. Mr. St. John, an attorney who lived in Little Compton, died Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, in Providence. Philippines native, lived in Portsmouth
Sabina Pangilinan, 80, of 72 Chace Road, Portsmouth, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at St. Anne's Hospital. She was the wife of the late Antero Pangilinan. Born in the Philippines on Oct. 27, 1921, she was the daughter of the late Fabian and Maria (Centeno) Abogado. Mrs. Pangilinan was a member of the Filipino American Association. She leaves a daughter, Fidela Edsall of Portsmouth, and eight other children in the Philippines. Her funeral was private. She will be buried in the Philippines.

Sister Mary Clarissa Paiva
Principal at St. Elizabeth's, born in the Açores
Sister Mary Clarissa Paiva, 103, died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, at Grace Barker Nursing Home, Warren. Born Oct. 4, 1898, in São Miguel, Açores, she entered the Sisters of Dorothy in September of 1916, professing her final vows in August of 1928. Sister Paiva received a bachelor's degree in education from Manhattan College in New York and a master's in education from Fordham University in New York in 1958. She was a teacher and principal at various Catholic schools in Reading, Pa., Staten Island, N.Y., New Bedford, Mass., Detroit, Providence, Newport and Bristol. For 16 years, Sister Paiva was principal of St. Patrick School on Staten Island, followed by five years as the head of Mount Carmel School in New Bedford and five more as principal of St. Elizabeth School in Bristol. Following her retirement in 1975, she remained active in her religious community until she moved to the nursing home in 1989 for medical reasons. She leaves a sister, Anna Castro; a niece, Dorothy Carroll; and a nephew, Anthony Castro, all of Bristol. Her funeral was held Saturday, March 23, from the George C. Lima Funeral Home, Bristol, with a Mass of Christian burial at St. Elizabeth's Church, Bristol. The Rev. Thomas J. Ferland was the celebrant for the Mass. The Rev. Joseph D. Santos Jr. and the Rev. Joseph McSweeney were concelebrants. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bristol, where Fathers Ferland, Santos and McSweeney offered the committal prayers.

Mary Ann Carreiro
Owner of Mary Ann Sewing served in Korean Conflict
Mary Ann Carreiro, 67, died unexpectedly on Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River. She was the wife of Charles J. Carreiro of Westport. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late John M. and the late Corrine F. (Darrow) O'Kelly. She had lived in Westport since 1966. For 20 years, Mrs. Carreiro worked as a bookkeeper for the former Singer Sewing Machine Co. of Newport. In 1977, she opened and operated the Mary Ann Sewing Machine Repair Shop in Westport. She served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Mrs. Carreiro was an excellent seamstress. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed walking. She was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in Westport. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Charles J. Carreiro Jr. of Fall River and Steven Carreiro of Westport; a daughter, Brenda Souza of Westport; five brothers, John and Joseph O'Kelly of California, Thomas and James O'Kelly of Virginia and William O'Kelly of Arizona; four sisters, Corrine Lee of Indiana, Kathleen Herman of Iowa, Eva Mae Carreiro of Westport and Elaine Riley of North Carolina; and four grandsons, three granddaughters, three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held on Monday, March 25, from the Potter Funeral Home, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at St. John the Baptist Church in Westport.

Alice M. Mlynek, 83, formerly of Warren, died Tuesday, March 19, 2002, at Country Gardens Nursing Home in Swansea. She was the wife of the late Aloy "Skippy" Mlynek. Born in Warren, she was a daughter of the late Edmund and Mary (Rockett) Lapane and had lived in Warren most of her life. Mrs. Mlynek leaves a son, Robert Mlynek of Harrisburg, Pa.; three daughters, Nancy Boulanger of Bristol, Margaret Bryden of Warwick and Paula Goodman of Johnston, and nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Florence Aiello of 187 Mt. Hope Ave. died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital. Born in Bristol, she was a daughter of the late Pasquale and Irene (Bifaro) Aiello. She was a textile worker for many years for the former Bristol Manufacturing Co. before retiring from Converse Rubber Co., formerly in Bristol. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, as well as an avid gardener. She leaves a sister, Catherine Diodati of Bristol, as well as many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She was a sister of the late Carmela "Millie" Valerio, Mary DiSalvo, and James Aiello. Capoverdi Jr. was the celebrant and homilist. Amanda Candelmo and Jacqueline Armillotto were readers. Stephanie Blair, Lisa Grimo and Gina Merritt presented the offertory gifts. Burial followed in St. Mary's Cemetery, where Father Capovedi read the committal prayers. Serving as pallbearers were Paul Blair, Pasquale Grimo, Kevin Merritt, Stephen Smith, Christopher Grimo, Carl Grimo and Paul Debuc.

Dorothy Greene
Artist, Barrington resident for 25 years
Dorothy Greene, 82, of County Road died Monday, March 18, 2002, at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence. She was the wife of the late Philip Greene. Born in West Warwick, a daughter of the late Alfred and Doris (Saunders) Theroux, she had lived in Barrington for 25 years, moving here from Narragansett. An artist, Mrs. Greene was an active member of the Rhode Island art community and a co-founder of the Narragansett Arts Festival. She leaves a son, Philip Greene of Barrington; two sisters, Millie Tulli of Florida and Pat Theroux of Coventry, and four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her funeral was held Saturday, March 23, from the Wilbur-Romano Funeral Home in Warren. Burial followed in Princes Hill Cemetery in Barrington.
