Thomas E. Duckworth, 88, of Weetamoe Drive, the first chief of the permanent Warwick Fire Department, died April 4, 2003, at home. He was the husband of the late Adeline (Cipollone) Duckworth. Born in Cranston, a son of the late Thomas J. and Ellen L. (Coyne) Duckworth, he had lived in Warwick most of his life. He had served as chief of the fire department from its establishment as a permanent department in 1956 until his retirement in 1973. He had previously served as chief of the Lakewood Volunteer Fire Company for many years. He was a past president of the New England Association of Fire Chiefs, the Rhode Island Fire Chiefs Association, and the Warwick Regular Firemen's Association. He was a past first vice president of the New England Division International Fire Chiefs Association. He was a life member of the Massachusetts Fire Chiefs Association and the Rhode Island Firemen's League. He was a member of the Warwick Retired Police & Fire Association and an honorary member of the Rhode Island Fire Instructors Association. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He leaves a son, Edward T. Duckworth of Warwick, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Timothy Church, 1799 Warwick Ave. Burial with military honors was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Lorin B. Kinney Sr., 56, of Blackstone Ave., a retired insurance agent and successful entrepreneur, died April 3, 2003, at home. He was the husband of Linda S. (Weston) Kinney. Born in Providence on February 12, 1947, he was a son of the late Norman and Grace (McNamara) Kinney. He was a 1965 graduate of North Attleboro High School. He worked as an insurance agent. He also founded, owned and operated several successful businesses, which he was involved in until his retirement due to disability seven years ago. He served in the Army from 1967 to 1970, completing two tours of duty in Vietnam. He leaves two sons, Lorin B. Kinney Jr. and James Kinney, both of Warwick; a brother, N. Scott Kinney in Michigan; a sister, Gail I. Wain of Coventry; three grandchildren, Brexton, Sloan and Logan Kinney; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held from John J. Diamond Funeral Home, 180 North Washington St., North Attleboro, with a funeral Mass in St. Mary Church, 14 Park St., North Attleboro. Burial was in Rhode Island Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. Carol Beth Berman, 46, of Willow Glen Circle, a nurse, died April 2, 2003, in Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. Born in Providence, a daughter of Bernard and Florence (Grossman) Sarenson, both of Cranston, she had lived in Cranston for nine years before moving to Warwick 16 years ago. She had worked at Kent County Memorial Hospital for six years. She was a graduate of Cranston High School West, Class of 1974, and the Rhode Island College School of Nursing in 1980. She was a former member of Temple Beth-El, Providence, and a member of the Strikes and Spares Bowling League. Besides her parents she leaves a daughter, Stacy Lynne Berman of Warwick; a brother, Michael Sarenson and his wife, Kim, of Cranston; a sister, Judith Paige and her husband, Jeffrey, of Warwick; and two nephews, Justin Paige and Matthew Sarenson. A funeral service was held in Temple Am-David, 40 Gardiner St. Burial was in Lincoln Park Cemetery. Warren A. Clarke, 57, of Park Lane, Coventry, a casino coin cashier, died April 1, 2003, at home after an illness. He was the husband of Joyce B. (Fortune) Clarke. Born in Providence, a son of the late Phillip W. and Mary I. (Hartzel) Clarke, he had been a resident of Providence and Cranston before moving to Coventry eight years ago. He had been employed at Foxwoods Casino in Mashantucket, Conn., for nine years as a cashier. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War. Besides his wife he leaves a son, Jonathan Clarke of Cranston; a daughter, Kelli Anne Clarke of Winter Haven, FL; two stepsons, Richard E. and Stephen P. Fiske, both of Providence; two stepdaughters, Lisa A. and Debra J. Fiske, both of Providence; a brother, Gerald W. Clarke of Salt Lake City, Utah; a sister, Patricia A. Hulkow of Coventry; and nine step-grandchildren. Elizabeth Louise Such, 81, of Mount View Drive, Cranston, a retired tax examiner, died April 4, 2003, at Catholic Medical Center, Manchester, NH. She was the wife of the late Frederick P. Such. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Henry M. and Mary Ann (McDermott) Heaney, she had lived in Providence before moving to Cranston 20 years ago. Mrs. Such had worked as a tax examiner in the audit division for the IRS, Providence, for 25 years, retiring in 1983. She had previously worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs Regional Office, Providence. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception Church. She leaves a son, Michael P. Such of Cranston; a daughter, Mary E. Allen of Manchester; a brother, Frank Heaney of Greenville; a sister, Mary Leonard Heaney, RSM, of Bristol; and six grandchildren. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Gaetano and Colomba (Regine) Mattera, she had lived in Warwick for six months, previously residing in East Greenwich for 40 years. She leaves a son, Alfred C. Romano of Warwick; a brother, Caesar Charles Mattera of Coventry; and a grandson, Patrolman Paul W. Romano, PPD of Providence. She was the sister of the late Joseph Mattera and Evelyn Mattera. The funeral was private. Jeannette B. Armstrong, 85, of Royal Crest Apartments, Cedar Pond Drive, a retired retail sales associate, died March 31, 2003, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Foster Armstrong. Born in Menominee, Mich., a daughter of the late Raymond and Clara (Larson) Bigger, she had lived in Stamford, Conn., for 37 years before moving to Warwick 14 years ago. Mrs. Armstrong had worked as a sales associate for Bloomingdale's in Stamford for 20 years, retiring in 1988. She was a volunteer in pastoral care at Kent Hospital for 10 years, where she interviewed patients and notified parishes of ill parishioners. She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star, Adah Chapter 15, East Greenwich, and Greenwood Community Church. She had formerly been a member of first Presbyterian Church, Stamford, for 37 years. She leaves a daughter, Judith A. Cunnion and her husband, Francis P. Cunnion Jr., of Warwick; a nephew, Kenneth Johnson in Florida; two nieces, Mary A. Rolando of Newport and Carole Klaver of Menominee; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. A memorial service was held in Greenwood Community Church, 805 Main Ave. Burial was private. Frances E. Girouard Sr., 80, of Mill Wheel Road, a retired machinist, died April 4, 2003, in Golden Crest Nursing Center, North Providence. He was the husband of Dorothy (Ross) Girouard. They had celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary in December 2002. Born in Providence, a son of the late Joseph N. and Marion L. (Solbrig) Girouard, he had lived in Warwick for 26 years, previously lived in West Warwick. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II. He had been a machinist for General Dynamics, Quonset Point, North Kingstown, for 10 years, retiring in 1987. Besides his wife he leaves a daughter, Shirley L. Imbeault of Warwick; a son, Francis E. Girouard Jr. of Cranston; a sister, Rita Smith of Chicago; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Joseph, Gerard and Raymond Girouard. Mrs. Anderson had been a physical therapist technician at the former Cranston General Hospital for two years before retiring in 1977. She leaves three sons, Michael T. Anderson of San Francisco, and Steve P. and Mark W. Anderson, both of Cranston; three daughters, Kathy A. Anderson of Chicago, Tracy I. Lanoue of Warwick and Jacky A. Born in Winooski, Vt., a daughter of the late Walter and Katherine (Kissel) Sakovich, she had lived in Providence before moving to Warwick in 1946. She leaves two sons, James J. Jaworski Jr. of Orange, Conn., and Richard W. Jaworski of Westfield, Mass.; a daughter, Kathryn E. Jaworski of Westford, Mass.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Josephine M. Jessie Fratus, 85, of Waldo Road, died April 6, 2003, at home. She was the wife of the late Clarence F. Fratus. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late Salvatore and Maria (Carrier) Basso, she had lived in Warwick for 44 years, previously living in Providence. She leaves a son, George C. Fratus, retired detective with the Yarmouth Police Department, of Yarmouth, Mass.; two daughters, Claire Cotoia and Darlene P. Narciso, both of Warwick; four brothers, Orest Basso of Northridge, CA, Herbert Basso of Taunton, Mass., and Frank and Paul Basso, both of Providence; four sisters, Evelyn Mainelli of North Providence, Louise Madency of Cranston, Agnes Gould of Seminole, Fla., and Marie Badessa of Providence; 11 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Kenneth R. Fratus of the Warwick Police Dept., who was the first Warwick policeman killed in the line of duty in 1971, and sister of the late Hugo Basso and Phyllis Nash. Thomas K. O'Shaughnessy, 77, of Shore Acres Avenue, North Kingstown, a Navy Fire Department captain before retiring, died September 30, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital, Warwick. He was the husband of Ruthe A. (Sheroda) O'Shaughnessy. Born in Minneapolis, Minn., he was a son of the late John J. and Ellen M. (Cooper) O'Shaughnessy. Mr. O'Shaughnessy had served in the Navy Fire Department - at the former Quonset Point Naval Air Station, in North Kingstown, and later at the Naval Education and Training Center, in Newport for 20 years before retiring as a captain. A Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired from the service in 1963, as a chief petty officer. He had served on the board of governors of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 42. Mr. O'Shaughnessy was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He was a communicant of St. Francis de Sales Church. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Judith S. Oaks of Lincoln, Anne Marie Dion of Warwick and Maureen Counterman of Sioux City, Iowa; three sons, Thomas K. O'Shaughnessy Jr. of Bristol, John J. O'Shaughnessy of West Warwick and Christopher P. O'Shaughnessy of North Kingstown; two brothers, John J. O'Shaughnessy of Minneapolis and Gerald R. O'Shaughnessy of Kinvarra, Ireland; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was a brother of the late Patrick, Francis and Emmett O'Shaughnessy. Thomas V. Doyle Jr., 64 of Rustic Way, a retired chemical technologist, died September 30, 2002, at home. He was the husband of Ruth (Ridgewell) Doyle. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., a son of the late Thomas V. Doyle Sr. and Louisa (Hobelmann) Doyle, he had lived in Warwick for 41 years. He was a graduate of Cranston High School and the Community College of Rhode Island. Mr. Doyle had been a chemical technologist at Water's Corp., in Milford, Mass., for 14 years before retiring in 1997. He was a member of the. Toastmasters Club at Water s. A member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, in which he was a division vice captain, he was a past commander of the Coast Guard Auxiliary's former Flotilla 705, and a member of Flotilla 709. Mr. Doyle was also a former instructor of swimming and first aid for the American Red Cross. He had been a champion amateur wrestler. Besides his wife, he leaves two daughters, Alexis Heather Doyle of Warwick and Heidi Doyle-Hall of Covington, Ga.; a brother, Walter D. Doyle in Oklahoma; and three grandchildren, Robert, Rory and Joshua Hall. A memorial service, presented by the Coast Guard Auxiliary, was held in the Carpenter-Jenks Quaker Lane Chapel, 659 East Greenwich Ave., West Warwick. Claire Y. (Morin) Marquis, 75, of Halifax Drive., formerly of North Kingstown, a hairdresser, died September 30, 2002, at home. She was the wife of the late Edmond A. Marquis. Born in Ipswich, Mass., a daughter of the late Joseph and Agnes (Bernier) Morin, she had lived in Warwick for seven years. Mrs. Marquis had been self-employed as a hairdresser for many years. She was an active member of Knitwits, in Warwick, a group that makes quilts and afghans for patients at the Hasbro Children's Hospital, in Providence. She enjoyed traveling, and was an accomplished seamstress. She leaves three sons, Joseph E. Marquis of Knoxville, Tenn., Roland F. Marquis of Ipswich and Charles W. Marquis of North Kingstown; three daughters, Marie A. Galanek of Belchertown, Mass., Celeste M. Canham of Oceanside, Calif., and Gabrielle M. Morgan of Warwick; four sisters, May MacIsac of Encinitas, Calif., Eva MarcAurelle of San Diego, Calif., Anita Gillis of Beverly, Mass., and M. Annette Morin of Lakeside, Calif.; and four grandchildren. She was a sister of the late Roland Morin. Shirley E. Peters, 70, of Fuller Street, a retired housekeeper, died September 28, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of Donald E. Peters. Born in Warwick, a daughter of the late Elmer and Mary E. (Healey) Graves, she had lived in the city all her life. Mrs. Peters had been a housekeeper for Avalon Nursing Home, in Warwick, for 17 years before she retired. She was a member of the Pilgrim Senior Center. Mrs. Peters was a member of Woodbury Union Church, Presbyterian. She enjoyed making crafts and playing bingo. Besides her husband, she leaves a son, David C. Horsch of Merrimack, NH; three daughters, Debra Roy of Plymouth, Mass., Kathleen L. Wilson of New Haven, Conn., and Linda J. Saniti of Providence; a brother, Elmer L. Graves of Warwick; a sister, Junis Merchant of Modesto, Calif; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Thomas Sr. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., a daughter of the late Robert and Eleanor (Fry) Morrison, she had been a lifelong resident of Warwick Mrs. Thomas was a file clerk at Leesona Corp. before retiring, and had formerly worked as a secretary at CKM Corp. She was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and St. Mary's Episcopal Church. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons, Dennis J. Thomas Jr. of Warwick and Steven K. Born in Providence, a daughter of the late William J. and Louise I. (O Neil) Cassidy, she had lived in Warwick since 1953. Mrs. Higginbotham was a secretary for the National Life Insurance Co. in Providence for 22 years, retiring in 1963. She was a communicant of St. Benedict Church. She leaves a sister, Mary T. Cassidy of Providence, and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Rev. William J. Cassidy, retired Capt. Harold A. Cassidy, Rhode Island State Police, retired Air Force Col. Anthony V. Polito - 9/22/2002
Anthony V. Polito, of Pine Haven St., Las Vegas, Nev., a retired professional trumpeter, died September 22, 2002, at Odyssey Health Care Center, Las Vegas. He was the husband of Virginia A. (Yeremian) Polito. Born in Providence, a son of the late Vincent and Angela (Preziuso) Polito, he had lived Warwick before he moved to Las Vegas in 1998. A professional musician, Mr. Polito was first trumpeter in the Glen Gray Orchestra during the Big Band era, and had played locally at the El Morocco Supper Club, Warwick Musical Theatre, Ocean State Theatre, and at Bovi's with the Big Jazz Band. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, serving in Europe, and had played in the Army Air Force Band. He was a 1955 graduate of Berkley College of Music, the former musical director at Bryant College, in Smithfield, brass instructor at Hope High School, Providence, and a music instructor at Ragosta's music studio in Cranston. From 1990 to 1998, he was the bugler with the Rhode Island National Guard for military funeral ceremonies. He had been an executive board member of the Providence Federation of Musicians, Local 198, for 24 years. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Nancy A. Polito and Lynn Polito-Perez, and her husband, Joseph Perez, all of Las Vegas. He was the brother of the late Edmund Polito. Mr. Saravo had been a carpenter for many years before retiring. He was a communicant of St. Gregory the Great Church. Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Stanley and Rosalie (Stahelak) Nicynski, he had lived in Warwick for 47 years. Mr. Nicynski had been a courier for the Warwick Land Co., Providence, for 40 years before retiring. He was an avid bowler and a member of the St. Timothy and the Coventry Senior Bowling Leagues. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and a communicant of St. Timothy Church. Besides his wife, he leaves seven daughters, Elaine D. Blair, Nancy A. Smith, Madeline S. White, Ruth M. Page and Jane A. Nicynski, all of Warwick, Joan S. O'Brien of Coventry and Rose W. Marginson of Tampa, Fla.; two sisters, Sophie Cunha of Pawtucket and Helen Kinsley of Seekonk; 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. He was the brother of the late William, Joseph and Stanley Nicynski. The funeral was held from the Thomas & Walter Quinn Funeral Home, 2435 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Timothy Church, Warwick Ave. Burial with military honors was in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 02701-4688 would be appreciated.

Helen L. Bonner, 73, of Lakeland, Fla., formerly of Warwick, died September 25, 2002, at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was the wife of the late Leon T. Bonner Jr. Born on May 16, 1929, in Warwick, a daughter of the late Arthur J. and Gertrude (Soucy) Rose, she had been a lifelong resident of the city until she moved to Florida a month ago. She leaves two sons, Keith T. Bonner of Lakeland and Mark J. Bonner of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Madeline Rose of Warwick; three brothers, Edward and Cordon Rose, both of Warwick, and Arthur Rose in Maryland; and two grandchildren.

Thomas W. Leahy Jr. - 9/27/2002
Thomas W. Leahy Jr., 70, of Warwick Ave., a retired machinist, died September, 27, 2002, at Kent County Memorial Hospital. Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas W. and Alphena (Cappuccilli) Leahy, he had lived in North Providence before moving to Warwick eight years ago. Mr. Leahy had been a machinist at the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics in North Kingstown for 10 years before retiring in 1994. He had previously worked at the Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He leaves two brothers, John J. Leahy of Warwick and Anthony R. Leahy of Coventry; and five nieces and a nephew. The funeral was held from Peter J. Barrett Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Kevin Church, 333 Sandy Lane. Burial was in St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.
