Edward J. Brown
Edward J. Brown, 87, of Aiken, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his residence.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by George Funeral Home, downtown.

Carl L. Dawson,
DuPont Co. retiree
NORTH AUGUSTA - Carl L. Dawson, 76, of Riley Court, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in Pineview Memorial Gardens. Dr. John M. Younginer Jr. will officiate.
Mr. Dawson was a native of Mission, Texas, and had lived in North Augusta for 48 years. He was retired from the DuPont Co. at the Savannah River Plant, and was a Merchant Marine veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Lillian Lyons Dawson; a daughter, Desiree D. Tidwell of North Augusta; a brother, Allen W. Dawson of Livingston, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Woodrow Wilson Cahall, General Motors Corp. retiree
Woodrow Wilson Cahall, 90, of Aiken, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Crouch Funeral Home, North East, Md.
Mr. Cahall was a native of Greenwood, Del. and lived for many years in North East, Md. He had lived in South Carolina since 1994. He was retired from the General Motors Corp. in 1973 and was a member of the United Auto Workers. He was a member of the North East Fire Co., North East, Md., for over 45 years.
Survivors include three daughters, Sarah Marianelli of Newark, Del., Norma Toner of Aiken and Katherine Cahall-Cook of Fairfax, Va.; a son, Aldridge Cahall of Salisbury, Md.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine B. Cahall, a son, Woodrow W. Cahall Jr., a granddaughter and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, 125 Pendleton St., Aiken, 29801, or to St. Joseph Hospice, 681 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken, 29803.
The family will receive friends at Rivers Funeral Home on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.

Willie Cullum, City of Aiken retiree
Willie Cullum, 67, of Aiken, died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Oakwood Baptist Church, Oakwood. The Rev. Wesley Guyton will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Cullum was a native of Aiken. He was retired from the City of Aiken. He was a member of Oakwood Baptist Church, where he served on the usher board. He was a member of the Federation of the Blind and Smith-Hazel Senior Citizens Club.
Survivors include his wife, Alfair Cullum of Aiken; a daughter, Wanda Ulmers of Aiken; a son, Willie B. Cullum of New York; two sisters, Rosa Lee Gunter of Bridgeton, N.J. and Mary Bush of Salem, N.J.; a brother, Josh Hankerson of Jamaica, N.Y.; and a grandchild.
Pallbearers will be his nephews.
The family will receive friends at the residence or at Jackson-Brooks Funeral Home beginning 2:30 p.m. today and at the church Tuesday from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of service.

Anne W. Lewis, Aiken County Historical Museum docent
Anne W. Lewis, of Aiken, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at her residence.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at St. John's United Methodist Church. The Revs. Sheila D. Rogers and Kenneth L. Nelson will officiate and burial will be in the Lewis family plot in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Southern Pines, N.C.
Mrs. Lewis was a native of McCormick and had lived in Aiken since 1976. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Lewis, a son, James W. Lewis, and a granddaughter, Cynthia Lewis.
Mrs. Lewis was a docent at the Aiken County Museum for many years and was active in the Town and Country Club, the Gem Lakes Organization for Women and St. John's United Methodist Church. She was a member of Circle Eleven. Mrs. Lewis also founded scholarships at Winthrop College, Dartmouth College and the University of South Carolina Aiken.
Survivors include a brother, Dewey Willis of McCormick, and several nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to the Organ fund at St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 809, Aiken, 29802.
The family will receive friends at the church following the service. George Funeral Home, downtown, is in charge of arrangements.

Lottie Baughman Smith
Lottie Baughman Smith, 90, of Aiken, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Mattie C. Hall Health Care Center.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Rivers Funeral Home.

Jane Layton Donohue
Jane Layton Donohue, 81, of Aiken, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by George Funeral Home, downtown.

Mildred G. Walker
Mildred G. Walker, 82, of Aiken, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by George Funeral Home, downtown.

Hazel Devore
GRANITEVILLE - Hazel Devore, 81, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Napier Funeral Home, Graniteville. The Rev. Steven Hendricks will officiate. Burial will be in Graniteville Cemetery.
A native of Graniteville, Ms. Devore was a daughter of the late Clint and Alma Jackson Devore. She was retired from the Graniteville Co. with 42 years of service.
Ms. Devore was a member of Graniteville First Baptist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Dorothy D. Kneece, Graniteville; and nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be the deacons of the Graniteville First Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Jewel Gregg Sunday School Class and Graniteville First Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made to the Graniteville First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 119, Graniteville 29829.

Ruth Staley Young
PHILADELPHIA - Funeral services for Ruth Staley Young will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Samaria Baptist Church, Springfield. The Rev. Monroe Bush Jr. will officiate.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Young, 74, of 2343 N. 18th St., died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at her residence.
Friends may call at the residence of her niece, Jacqueline Staley, 2969 Surrey Road, Springfield, or from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Fulmer's Funeral Home of Springfield.

Henry Burckhalter, SCE&G retiree
Henry Burckhalter, 75, of Old Airport Road, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Rivers Funeral Home.
The Rev. James Kirk will officiate and burial will be in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Ricky Burckhalter, Brundy Pursley, Lee Moore, Allen Walton, Andy Morris, Steve Morris and Nat Newsome.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jerome Morris, William Morris, Wilburn Morris, Kenny Newsome, Dr. Norman Pursley, Dr. George Pursley, Bill Pursley and Wilson Moseley.
Mr. Burckhalter was a native of Aiken and a member of Memorial Baptist Church.
He was a retired electrician with SCE&G and was a former member of the 4-H Camp Staff.
He was a past president of the Aiken Carving Club and the Red Bluff Hunting Club.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Morris Burckhalter; a daughter, Janet Burckhalter of Aiken; two sisters, Minnie McKenna of Aiken and Elizabeth Walton of Aiken; a granddaughter and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diane Burckhalter McFarland; two brothers, Ernest and John Burckhalter; and a sister, Annabell Sassatille. He was the son of the late John and Mabel Favor Burckhalter.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1003 Hammond Road, Aiken, 29803; or to the American Diabetes Association, 2711 Middleburg Drive, Columbia, 29204.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, or at the residence.

Marjorie McCann Smyth
AUGUSTA - Marjorie Edith McCann Smyth, 83, died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Windermere Nursing Home, Augusta.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, in the Ridge Spring Cemetery.
The Rev. Chris Fisher will officiate.
Mrs. Smyth was a native of Boston.
She was a retired bank officer.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church and the Eastern Star.
She was the daughter of the late Thomas and Edith Helms McCann and the wife of the late William Astrup Smyth.
Survivors include two sons, William A. Smyth of Monetta and Richard T. Smyth of Johnston; a brother, Russell McCann of La Mesa, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 1186 Mt. Calvary Road, Johnston, 29832.
Shellhouse Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby McCoy Johnson, former cinema manager
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Ruby McCoy Johnson, 68, died Monday, Feb. 12, 2001, at her residence, 2950 Richmond Hill Road.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Stephen D. Posey Funeral Home, North Augusta. Elders Bruce J. Hymas and Billy R. Black will officiate.
Burial will be in Westview Cemetery.
Mrs. Johnson was a native of McDuffie County, Georgia.
She was a former manager of the Thomson Twin Cinema Theater and employee with Bellemead Country Club.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she was a primary teacher.
Surviving are two sons, George Horne, Warner Robbins, Ga., and Greg L. Johnson, Appling, Ga.; three daughters, Vickie Norman, Hephzibah, Ga., and Sonja Kiester and Dianne Leiter, both of Thomson; three brothers, Joe McCoy and J. B. McCoy, both of Augusta, and Chester McCoy, Martinez, Ga.; a sister, Margaret Olsofsky, Augusta; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be George Nichols, Lloyd McCoy, Neal Johnson, Ken Pullum, Clayton Brod and James Embry.
Friends may call from 7-9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Bert Vandervliet
Bert Vandervliet, 92, died Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2001, at Eden Gardens, 1385 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken.

Surviving are his widow, Dorothy L. Fuller Vandervliet; and a son, Dr. Stephen K. Vandervliet, Aiken.
