Entered into rest Monday, March 14, 2005, Mrs. Edith Lucille Miller Arthur of Graniteville, wife of the late Lewis T. Arthur and daughter of the late Henry Miller and the late Jonelle Chappell Miller Gresham. She is survived by two sons, Jervis J. Arthur and his wife, Alice J. Arthur, of Warrenville and Kenny A. Arthur and his wife, Patricia C. Arthur, of Graniteville; a daughter, Jean Clark and her husband, Woody G. Clark, of Monroe, Ga.; grandchildren, Teresa A. Rawls and her husband, the late Richard Rawls, Jervis W. Arthur, Lisa Clark, Stacey Lund and her husband Bruce Lund, Stephen Clark, Ginger A. Proctor and her husband, Gene Proctor, Kenny A. Arthur II and his wife, Jody Arthur, Yvonne Arthur, Stephanie Arthur, Connie Arthur, Ashley Arthur, Angela Arthur, Lewis T. Arthur III and Natalie Arthur; five great grandchildren, Justin Rawls, Taylor Rawls, Taya Rawls, Cassidee Proctor and Zeke Proctor; a brother, Billy Gresham and three sisters, Emma Bates, Patsy Morgan and Jonelle Smith. She was born in Sweetwater but has been a lifelong resident of Graniteville, having lived at the same address for over 56 years. She was retired from Graniteville Co. She was a charter member of Hillview Baptist Church in Graniteville and a member of the Sunday school class there. She was a member of the Daughters Of the American Revolution. The funeral service will be conducted Friday, March 18 at 3 p.m. in Hillview Baptist Church in Graniteville with the Rev. Timothy Smart and Rev. Louis Swanson officiating. Interment will follow in the Graniteville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bruce Lund, Jessie Bishop, Kenny Arthur II, Gene Proctor, Jervis W. Arthur and Justin Rawls. Honorary pallbearers will be members of her Sunday school class at Hillview Baptist Church and members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The family will receive friends Thursday night, March 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mrs. Arthur will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service on Friday, March 18.

NORTH AUGUSTA - Mr. Henry Courtney Sloan, beloved son of the late Herbert Gene and Josephine Ginish Sloan, entered into rest on Thursday, March 10, 2005.
He is survived by his brother, Mark Steven Sloan of North Augusta.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Hatcher Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Finley Limehouse officiating. Interment will be private.

Mary L. Stapleton
Mary L. Stapleton, 93, widow of J. Mason Stapleton Sr. and formerly of Spartanburg, died Monday, March 14, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Mrs. Stapleton was born in Union County, where she attended elementary and high school before graduating with her bachelor's degree from Asheville Teacher's College. She also earned a master of education degree from Furman University. She was a beloved teacher in the public schools of South Carolina. She served as a principal at Cavins Elementary school near Woodruff, Inman City Schools and Edwin P. Todd Elementary School, Spartanburg. She helped write curricula, sponsored by the Baruch Foundation, for the schools of South Carolina to make students aware of issues pertaining to the preservation of the environment. For most of her adult life she taught church school, including at Trinity United Methodist Church in Spartanburg and Bethel United Methodist Church in Spartanburg. At Bethel she also served on the committee on pastor-parish relations and as chair of the board for the Bethel Children's Day Care. As chair of the committee on church and society, she led a church study on victims of AIDS and ministered herself to those she knew were victims. In all her church activities she stressed the abolishment of racial and ethnic barriers between people in both church and world. She and her husband led in the resettlement of families in Spartanburg expelled from their native country of Laos. Moving to Aiken she became an affiliate member of St. John's United Methodist Church. A skilled cook and devoted homemaker, she was an avid rose gardener and was featured for her work with African violets.
Mrs. Stapleton is survived by her only child, the Rev. Dr. John Mason Stapleton Jr. of Aiken, his wife Cynthia; three grandchildren, Catherine Stapleton Nance of Aiken, her husband Tom, Mark Stapleton of Dallas, his wife Diane, David Stapleton of Boston, his fiancé Marian Martinez of Granada, Spain; a sister, Sarah Allison of Union, sister-in-law, Minnie Lee of Union, sister-in-law, Nita Lee, of Spartanburg; beloved nieces and nephews; and her special Laotian families originally from Laos, now proud United States citizens, including Wu, an especially "chosen" member of the family and her husband, Xang, and their two daughters, now living in Wisconsin, and her beloved students in this country and throughout the world.
A service of death and resurrection is planned for Bogansville United Methodist Church on the Buffalo-Spartanburg Highway at 2:30 p.m. Friday, March 18, with burial in the church cemetery. The service will be conducted by her son John Mason, her grandson Mark, the Revs. Gary Peterson, Larry Hayes, Robert Clyburn and professor Dwight Lambert. The family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Shellhouse funeral Home on Hayne Ave., Aiken on Thursday and after the service in the Bogansville United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall. Pallbearers are David Stapleton, Henry Sinclair, Johnny Sinclair, Tommy Sinclair, Gregg Albares and Tom Nance. Honorary pallbearers are Paul Allison Jr., Charles Littlejohn, William Cantrell and Dr. Frank Lee.

William Melvin Stichert
A memorial service for William Melvin Stichert will be held on Thursday, March 17 at 11 a.m. at George Funeral Homes Historic Downtown Chapel, 211 Park Ave. SW Aiken. Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association in his memory.
Mr. Stichert, 56, of Aiken, died Monday, March 14, 2005 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A lifelong resident of Aiken, he was an automotive technician. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict. He is survived by three children, William D. Stichert, Ardmore, Okla., Sylvia Bosseboeuf, Ardmore, Okla. and Sarah Laguna, Newport, N.C.; his mother, Vivian (Peacock) Stichert, Aiken; two brothers; Jimmy and Johnny Stichert, both of Aiken; and four grandchildren, Brittni, Jalen, McKaila and Nathaniel.

BEECH ISLAND - Mrs. Cecelia Harden Beck, wife of the late Mr. Tillman Beck, entered into rest at the age of 75 in her home Thursday, March 31, 2005.
Mrs. Beck was born in Aiken to the late Gary and Mary Swearingen Harden. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church where she had been a Sunday school teacher for 25 years. She was the former president of the Friendly Neighbor Club.
Surviving are her children, Richard Beck, Marty Beck and his wife Renee Beck, Vickie Luarca, all of Beech Island, Vera Steeger of Washington, and Verna Genier of Minnesota; two sisters, two brothers; beloved friend, Evelyn Thompson; a brother-in-law, George W. Beck; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday at 3 p.m. at Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Clifton Stancel and Mr. Daniel Luarca officiating. Interment will be in Good Hope Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Brooks died March 30, 2005. Born in Newark, N.J., he was the son of Manchester Brooks Sr., and Bernice Williams Veal. He was a retired employee of the SCANA Corp., a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Foundation Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Carolyn R. Brooks; children, Sharon (Anthony) Brooks-Graham, Manchester Brooks III, Christopher Veal and Anthony Rivers; and seven grandchildren.

SALUDA - Guy Bryson, 74, of 185 Cold Harbor Dr., died Friday, April 1, 2005, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born in Unaka, N.C., and the son of the late Hattie Bryson, he was the husband of Julia Claire G. Bryson. Mr. Bryson was first married to the late Ruby Odell Bryson. He was retired from DuPont Savannah River Plant and was a member of the Hollywood Ruritan Club and was a founding member of the Rooster Club. Mr. Bryson was a member of Corinth Lutheran Church and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Surviving is his wife, Julia Claire G. Bryson; one son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Debbie Bryson of Kingsport, Tenn.; one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie Bryson-Damon and Karl Damon of Aiken; two step-sons and step-daughters-in-law, Jimmie and Darlene Bland of Aiken and Hansford and Sherral Bland of Batesburg; one step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Kathleen and Gene Farris of Aiken; three grandchildren, Tracy Bryson, Todd Bryson and Kelci Bryson; and three step-grandchildren, Julianne Spires, Trey Bland and Tyler Bland.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, April 4, at Corinth Lutheran Church with Pastor Bill Ebener officiating. Interment will follow at 4:30 p.m. in Aiken Memorial Gardens.
