GARNETT, S.C. -- Joe Bennett died Dec. 29 in the Hampton Regional Medical Center in Varnville, S.C. after a brief illness. He retired from the Continental Container Co. in Pennsylvania.

Bennett of Washington, D.C., Eugene Bennett of Columbus, Ga., Joseph Bennett Jr. of Sacramento, Calif., Joshua Bennett of Garnett, Gerald Bennett of Estill, S.C., and Jonathan Bennett of Lena, S.C.; nine daughters, Ruth De La Cruz of Atlantic City, N.J., Suzanne Cohen of Brunson, S.C., Arebal Young of Savannah, Rosalyn Gould of Martin, S.C., Kimberly Williams of Hampton, S.C., Olga Abdi of Hardeeville, Angela Bennett of Upper Darby, Pa., and Jo Ann Gandy and Regina Heyward, both of Garnett, S.C.; and 64 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

VIDALIA -- Marcia Claire Lumpkin Crain, 54, died Dec. 31 at Meadows Regional Medical Center of Vidalia. She was born in Dade County, Fla., and lived in Homestead, Fla. until 1978 when she moved to Vidalia. She worked for 25 years as a Medical Transcriber and was retired from Meadows Memorial Hospital. She was of the Methodist Faith and a member of Women of the Moose.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Kenneth Crain of Vidalia; a daughter, Teresa Johns of Vidalia; three sisters, Elaine Brandenburg of Vidalia, and Louise Robertson and Mary Ellen Lawrence, both of Homestead, Fla.; a brother, Bill Lumpkin of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandsons, Brook Johns and Tyler Johns, both of Vidalia; and several nieces and nephews.

Dekle Darsey
HINESVILLE -- Dekle Darsey, 92, died Dec. 31 at Memorial Medical Health University after a long illness. He was a native and lifelong resident of Liberty County and had lived in Tampa, Fla. for several years. He formerly worked at Hinesville Bank and was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church and member of A.G. Overman Mens Bible Class, Knight of Pythias, and Liberty Independent Troop. He served on City Council and Hinesville Housing Authority.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Martha Sue Ginter of Sunbury, Ga.; a son, John D. Darsey Jr. of Riverview, Fla.; three sisters, Ethelda Lee and Eloise Patterson, both of Hinesville, and Clem Harrison of Baton Rouge, La.; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Maggie R. Gordon, 78, died Dec. 30 at home. She was a native of Savannah and attended Catholic and public schools of Chatham County. She was a member of West Congregational Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.
SURVIVORS: two daughters, Valarie Gordon of Fairburn, Ga., and Vernida Graves of Riverdale, Ga.; two sons, Caroll Gordon of Atlanta, and Joseph Gordon of Philadelphia, Pa.; a sister, Catherine Felder of West Palm Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Harry Rosendary of West Palm Beach, Fla., and James Rosendary of Monroe, La.; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

HARDEEVILLE -- Ben Heyward, 56, died Dec. 29 at Memorial Hospital. He was a native and lifelong resident of Hardeeville, Levy Community.
SURVIVORS: two sisters, Carrie B. Heyward of Hardeeville and Pearlie M. Heyward of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers, Harold Heyward of Charleston, Roosevelt Heyward of Savannah, Melvin Heyward Jr. and Willie Heyward, both of Hardeeville; and friend, Margaret Campbell of Hardeeville. Bazley Hightower Jr.
Bazley Hightower Jr., 41, died Dec. 30 at Memorial Medical Health University Center. He attended schools in the Chatham County School System and was a laborer with Snelling & Snelling Temporary Services. He was an Army veteran.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Juanita V. Hightower, a daughter, Kyeisha L. Hightower of Savannah; four sons, Bazley Hightower III, Labron Holmes, Darius Holmes, and DeShawn Holmes, all of Savannah; his mother, Pearlie Mae Hightower; three sisters, Earnestine Hargrove, Vickie Hightower, and Georgette Hightower, all of Savannah; two brothers, Kintrell Morris of Ohio, and Ulysses Chisholm of Orlando, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- Allen J. Miller, 83, died Dec. 29 at Sunbridge Care Center in Jesup. He was a native of Camden County and lived in Glynn County for past 70 years. He was the Concessionaire at Sea Island Golf Club for many years and was of the Baptist faith.
SURVIVORS: three sons, Thomas A. Miller of St. Simons Island, Jerry C. Miller of Frankfort, Ky., and Billy R. Miller of Trenton, Fla.; two daughters, Shelba Davies of Brunswick, and Shirley Riverdahl of Rockford, Ill.; two brothers, Ernest Miller of Thunderbolt, and Burl A. Miller of Brandon, Miss.; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

NAPERVILLE, ILL. -- Charlotte Jayne Spell Page, 51, died Dec. 30 at Edward Medical Center of Naperville after a long illness. She was a native of Toombs County, Ga., a graduate of Lyons High School and Valdosta State University, and a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She was a watercolor artist and devoted time raising funds for the National Marrow Donor Program. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church of Charlotte, N.C.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Jim Page of Aurora, Ill.; a daughter, Meredith Page of Athens, Ga.; her mother, Freda Spell of Murryville, Ga.; a sister, Sue Sapp of Jonesboro, Ga.; a brother, Jay Spell of College Park, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

WAYCROSS -- Emily V. Paone, 3, died Dec. 28 at Satilla Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Waycross.
SURVIVORS: her parents, Ronald and Jean Miles of Waycross; four brothers, Ronald Miles Jr., Rodney Miles, Winston Miles, and Nicolas Carter, all of Waycross; two sisters, Louise Miles and Charlene Paone, both of Waycross; her grandmother, Emily Virginia Miles of Charleston; and several aunts and uncles.

Alphonso Polite Sr.
DUDLEY, N.C. -- Alphonso Polite Sr., 45, died Dec. 28 at home. He was born in Savannah and moved to Goldsboro, N.C. in 1978. The last three years he lived in Dudley. He was educated in the public schools of Savannah and attended Savannah State University. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 20 years of service and started "Polite & Sons Trucking Co." in Dudley. He was a former member of Butler Presbyterian Church in Savannah.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Dionne Cook of Ft. Hood, Texas; two sons, Corie Anderson of New York City, and Alphonso Polite Jr. of Goldsboro; his mother, Helen P. Tippins of Savannah; two sisters, Amie L. Polite of Marietta, and Pamela T. BRUNSWICK -- Marie Beasley Owens Reynolds, 77, died Dec. 30 at home. She is a native of McIntosh County and lived in Brunswick for the past 56 years. She was a former employee of J.A. Jones Shipbuilders. She was a member of Trinity Southern Methodist Church and was a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: two daughters, Carol Marie Reynolds Leppard of Brunswick, and Nancy Reynolds Bartlett of St. Simons Island; two sons, Ronald H. Reynolds of Claxton and Jimmie G. Viola L. Stevens, 54, died Dec. 29 at Memorial Medical. She was born in Savannah. She was Food Manager at Beach High School and worked for Chatham County Board of Education for 26 years. She was a member of Garvin's Temple Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Stephanie D. Stevens of Savannah; two sons, Warren Stevens III of Savannah, and Kerry Stevens of Clearwater, Fla.; three sisters, Josie S. Gray of Southfield, Mich., Dorothy J. Jewell K. Riner
ADRIAN -- Jewell Kersey Riner, 85, died Dec. 31 at Macon Memorial Hospital after a long illness. She was a member of Pilgram Rest Primitive Baptist Church and a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: two daughters and a son-in-law, Wannie and Ervin Cordry, and Colleen Kersey, all of Wrightsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Marie Riner of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a sister, Alice Price of Twin City; a brother, Elder Aaron Kersey of Adrian; and 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

ACWORTH, GA -- Norman Luther Toler, 62, died Dec. 27 in Cobb County. He was a native of Jeff Davis County and lived in Acworth for the past two years. He was a retired construction worker.

GLENNVILLE -- Coy Lee Wells, 79, died Dec. 31 at Candler Hospital in Savannah after a long illness. He was a native of Knox County,Tenn., and had lived in Glennville since 1941. He was owner of Tattnall Roofing of Glennville, a World War II Army veteran, and a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: three daughters, Cathy W. Sapp and Judy W. Griffis, both of Glennville, and Susan W. Waters of Savannah; a son, Edward Wells of Glennville; and ten grandchildren and several niece and nephews.

Campbell; a daughter, Cynthia Lee Howell of Tarrytown; a step-son, Merriel Dannie Campbell of Lyons; her mother, Vondell Blaxton of Vidalia; two brothers, Durwood Collins of Lyons and Donnie S. James F. Gambrall Sr.
James F. Gambrall Sr., 70, died Dec. 31 at home. He was a native of Louisville, Ky., and had been a resident of Savannah for the past 50 years. He was an Air Force veteran and was retired from Union Camp Corporation. He was a communicant of St. James Catholic Church.
SURVIVORS: two sons, John E. Gambrall of Ellabell and James F. Gambrall Jr. of Savannah; three granddaughters, Ginger Boney of Norfolk, Va., Diana Rose of Savannah, and Stacy Gambrall of Ellabell; two grandsons, Jonathan Gambrall of Ellabell and Benjamin Rose of Savannah; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

METTER -- Mrs. Tessie Hudson Hadden, 77, died Jan. 1, 2000. The Crawford County native had lived in Candler County since 1949 moving here from Macon. She was a retired supervisor having worked with Twin City Shirt Factory, Metter Manufacturing Company and Care Free Shoe Wear Company. She was a member of Metter United Methodist Church.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Leon A. Hadden Sr. of Metter; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Leon A. Jr. and Kathy Hadden, Bobby Gene and Ellen Hadden and Leon Allen Hadden, all of Metter; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and J.M. Snipes of Metter; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was a retired business owner, a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and Ready Men Sunday School Class. He served in the Navy CB's as a Carpenter's Third Mate.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Lucy Rea McDonald Hamilton of Vidalia; a daughter, Diane Hamilton Coursey of Vidalia; two sons, Ray Hamilton of Ailey and Bobby Hamilton of Vidalia; a sister, Mildred Fletcher of Palm Beach, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

BEAUFORT -- Albert "Goonie" Goodwin Jr., 48, died Dec. 26 at Ralph Johnson Veteran's Medical Center in Charleston, S.C. He was a native of Beaufort.
SURVIVORS: his mother, Gladys Simpkins of Long Beach, N.Y.; two sisters, Gussie M. King of Philadelphia and Barbara Norwood of Oakland, Calif.; two brothers, Paul Goodwin of West Germany and John Henry Simpkins Sr. of North Babylon, N.Y.

Waverly F. Harvey
BRUNSWICK -- Waverly Forrester Harvey, 91, died Dec. 31 at Southeast Georgia Medical Center. The Alabama native had been a resident of Brunswick from 1945 until 1970. She moved to Hazlehurst in 1970 and returned to Brunswick in 1983. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Brunswick and the Dorcas School Class. She had been active in PTA and was a former member of Brunswick Woman's Club, Exchangettes and a Pink Lady.
SURVIVORS: locally, a daughter, Mary Jane Harvey Murray; a granddaughter Kendra Murray Blackerby and a grandson, Cliff Murray.
