WADLEY -- Joe V. Slater, 85, died Jan. 14 at Jefferson Hospital in Louisville. He was a retired heavy equipment operator at Fort Gordon. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Wadley and a member of the Masons.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Evelyn Slater of Wadley; a daughter, Mary Cecil Ivy of Adrian; a brother, Felton Slater of Stillmore; a sister, Leola Freeman of Wadley; and two grandchildren, Johnny and Joey Ivy, both of Miami.

Dorothy V. Sullivan
ALMA -- Dorothy Valdeese Sullivan, 79, died Jan. 13 at home. She was a native of Pierce County and a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Lawrence M. Sullivan Sr. of Brunswick; two sons, Buddy Dux of Jacksonville, Fla., and Lawrence M. Sullivan Jr. of Brunswick; three daughters, Barbara Dux of Brunswick, Bette Dux of Jacksonville and Mary Sullivan Hart of Brunswick; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Helen K. Swartz
Mrs. Helen Kunes Swartz, 94, died Jan. 14 at Heritage Park Nursing Home. She was a native of Iowa and a resident of Savannah for the past 10 years. She was a retired school teacher from Nebraska.
SURVIVORS: stepsons, Kenneth Swartz of Savannah and William Swartz of Inglewood, Calif.; and a brother, John Kunes of Huntington Beach, Calif. Burial will be in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood. Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Hodgson Chapel.

Madie Lee K. White
VIDALIA -- Madie Lee Kelly White, 83, died Jan. 13 at Fairview Park in Dublin. She was a Telfair County native, lived in Macon until 1954 when she moved to Vidalia. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Vidalia, where she was president of WMU and member and teacher of the Steadfast Sunday School Class. She was a member and past president of Vidalia Women's Club and was a homemaker. She was the widow of Manuel Webster White.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Kathy Blount of Vidalia; two sons, Bob White of Vidalia and John White of Macon; two sisters, Dot Ellis of Ocala, Fla., and Louise Griffin of Macon; a sister-in-law, Nita Cloud of Little Rock, Ark.; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

CLAXTON -- Jane Cartee Sapp, 78, died Jan. 14 at Evans Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Tattnall County and a member of Old Anderson Primitive Baptist Church. She was a homemaker.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Roscoe Sapp of Claxton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Carson and Madeline Sapp of Dublin, Therrell and Marie Sapp, and Connie Sapp, all of Claxton, and Betty Sapp of Daisy; a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and David Strickland of Claxton; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

ALMA -- William Edward Robinson, 52, died Jan. 14 at his home. He was a native of Sidell County, Ky., and served in the Navy during the Vietnam War.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Catherine Smith Robinson of Alma; four children, Billy Don Robinson of Alma, Randall Thomas Robinson, William Edward Robinson Jr. and Renee Dawn Robinson, all of Cambridge City, Ind.; a brother, Kenneth Robinson of Corbin, Ky.; two sisters, Joy Gabbard of Liberty, Ind., and Betsy Lee of Milan, Ind., and seven grandchildren.

Robert Moore
SWAINSBORO -- Robert Moore, 88, died Jan. 13 at Emanuel Medical Center. He was born in Atlanta and had lived most of his life in Emanuel County. He was a retired farmer, attended Emanuel Harvest Church and was an Army veteran of World War II.

BEAUFORT -- Irene Gooding Schroder, 83, died Jan. 13 at Beaufort Naval Hospital. She was born in Hampton. She was a homemaker and a member of the Baptist Church of Beaufort.

Deloris B. Lytle
RIDGELAND -- Mrs. Deloris Bowers Lytle died Jan. 12 at Medical University of South Carolina. She was born in Jasper County. She was a member of Second Euhaw Baptist Church Cooler in Ridgeland.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Howard Lytle of Ridgeland; daughters, Katina R. Lytle of Atlanta and Lyndia J. Lytle of Ridgeland; brothers, Johnnie Swinton of Savannah, Ga., Elijah Swinton of Ridgeland, Harry Swinton of Houston and Curtis Swinton of Ridgeland; a sister, Deila M. Houston E. Odom
WASKOM, Texas -- Houston E. Odom, 76, died Jan. 10 in Marshall. He was a native of Geneva County, Ala., and a former resident of Brunswick. He moved to Texas in 1998, where he lived for six years coming from Griffin, Ga. He was a minister with Norwich Street Church of God. He had pastored several churches including, Adel Church of God; Statesboro Church of God; Sharon Park Church of God in Savannah; Hazlehurst Church of God and Hickory Street Church of God in Jesup.
SURVIVORS: sons, Houston E. Odom of Waskom, Jimmy R. Odom of Woodstock and Earl M. Odom of Brunswick; brothers, John Odom of Port St. Joe, Fla., Horton Odom of Columbus and Victor Odom of Crawford, Ala.; a sister, Bonnie Dykes of Sunny Hills, Fla., and May Hall of New Brockton, Ala.; five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Reba W. McKinzie
SWAINSBORO -- Reba Ann Wommack McKinzie, 72, died Jan. 14 at Washington County Regional Medical Center in Sandersville. She was a native of Washington County. She was a homemaker and a member of Blundale Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: her husband, John H. McKinzie of Swainsboro; a daughter, Reba Mae McKinzie Henry of Swainsboro; two sisters, Ellen Boatright of Port Wentworth and Lillian Hitchcock of Sandersville; a brother, Oscar Wommack of Sandersville; and a grandson, Jeremy Henry of Moultrie.

Terry L. Brown
HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- Terry Lee Brown, 57, died Jan. 14 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics. He was born in Fremont, Ohio, and moved to Hilton Head Island in 1987 from Augusta, Ga. He was a radio personality who later managed TV and radio stations in Tennessee and Georgia. He was an avid golfer locally and resided on a sailing sloop. SURVIVOR: a brother, William R. Brown of North Port, Fla. Services will be in Florida. The Island Funeral Home.

Walter H. Shipman
BRUNSWICK -- Walter Henry Shipman, 91, died Jan. 13 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center. He was enlisted in the Army in 1927 and served 20 years. He was a veteran of World War II and retired as a chief warrant officer. He was a member of the 94th Infantry Division. He was formerly active in Little League and the Boy Scouts. He was a volunteer at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He had lived in Brunswick since 1982.
SURVIVORS: a son, Walter Shipman of Brunswick; three daughters, Margaret Mangold of Rockledge, Fla., Lorraine Topolski of Cassadaga, N.Y., and Barbara Ingersoll of N. Tonawanda, N.Y.; 13 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and several and nephews.
GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Mount Olivet Cemetery in Kenmore, N.Y. A memorial mass will be held later at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Brunswick.

Charles E. Sherwood
DUBLIN -- Charles Edward "Chuck" Sherwood, 48, died Dec. 28 at home. He was a native of Des Moines, Iowa, and lived in Dublin for the past nine years. He was a 1969 graduate of Glynn Academy of Brunswick. He attended Brunswick Junior College until he joined the Navy in 1971. He served in the Navy for almost 10 years and retired as a disabled veteran. He owned and operated Sherwood Fences in Brunswick with his father, before moving to Dublin to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.
SURVIVORS: his mother, Betty J. Sherwood of Cumming; two sisters, Judie Fogle of Cumming and Jean Bonenberger of Brandon, S.D.; a niece, Jennifer Fogle of Cumming; a nephew, Don Bonenberger of Brandon; three great-nieces and many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was cremated Jan. 1. A memorial service will be held in the spring at Edo Miller and Sons Funeral Home in Brunswick.

Dewitt Sharpe
UVALDA -- Dewitt Sharpe, 74, died Jan. 13 at Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Augusta. He was born in Montgomery County and lived in Miami from 1948-1958, returning to Toombs County and the Montgomery County area. He was a retired hardware store operator and a member of Alston Methodist Church in Alston. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the VFW in Vidalia.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Ruth Pye Sharpe of Uvalda; daughters, Wanda Etchison of San Antonio, Teresa Lynn of Duluth, Kathy Pelkey of Round Rock, Texas, and Nan Winge and Sarah Gray, both of Uvalda; a sister, Barbara Sharpe of Uvalda; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
VISITATION: 7-9 p.m. today at Murchison Funeral Home in Vidalia. SERVICES: 3 p.m. Sunday at Murchison Funeral Home, burial in Sharpe Cemetery near Alston.

Laverne S. Moody
Laverne "Peggy" S. Moody, 77, died Jan. 13 at her home. She was a native of Gum Branch and lived there for many years and attended Gum Branch Baptist Church. She later moved to Savannah where she lived most of her adult life. She taught kindergarten at Grove Park Kindergarten, which later became Jacqueline's Child Care. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Temple for 35 years and a member of The Love Sunday School Class.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Gregg H. Moody and B. Lynn Moody, both of Savannah; her mother, Essie Smiley of Jesup; a brother, Richard D. Smiley of Jesup; six sisters, Melva Brannen of Jesup, Mary Gooding, LaTrelle Smiley and Johnnie Morrow, all of Savannah, Kay Wright of Augusta and Shirley Mathis of Durham, N.C.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth R. McKellar, 86, died Jan. 10 at Savannah Rehab. She was a native of Arkansas and had lived in Savannah for the past 15 years. She was a graduate of the University of Arkansas and a member of Wilmington Island Presbyterian Church.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Robert R. McKellar of Savannah and Scott McKellar of St. Louis; a sister, Helen McKellar of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Charles R. Rhodes of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joann Cooper
HINESVILLE -- Joann Cooper, 61, died Jan. 13 at her home. She was a native of Salisbury, N.C., and had lived in Hinesville for the past 20 years. She received a B.S. degree in Human Resources at St. Leo College at Fort Stewart and was employed at Army Community Services. She was Lutheran and President of the Parish Council Lutheran Heritage Fellowship at Fort Stewart.
SURVIVORS: two daughters, Jerrie Markiewicz of Battleground, Wash., and Cynthia Ross of Fort Knox, Ky.; three sisters, Lucille Wagner of Asheville, N.C., Jane Waller, Salisbury, N.C., and Shirley Raymond of Salisbury, N.C.; three brothers, Hubert, James and Ben Agner, all of Salisbury, N.C., and four grandsons.

Preston P. Bow
SCREVEN -- Preston P. Bow, 79, died Jan. 12 at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. He was a native of Kentucky and had lived in Screven for the past 10 years. He retired from the Army, having served in World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was deputy sheriff with the Burkesville, Ky., sheriff's department and was a member of the Methodist faith and a Mason. He was the widower of Eula Mae Bow.
SURVIVORS: four daughters, Jeanie Porter of Douglas, Joan Van Fleteren of Grand Rapids, Mich., Patsy Johnson of Humble, Texas, and Deborah McGee of New Caney, Texas; a son, Jack Dixon of Millbrook, Ala.; a sister, Regina Tapps of Elizabethtown, Ky.; 18 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Pearl E. Bellis
ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- Pearl Elizabeth Bellis, 86, died Jan. 11 at Brian Center Inn on St. Simons Island. She was a native of Tennessee and had lived on St. Simons Island for the past two weeks. She was a homemaker and member of the Church of God.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Brent Thomas of St. Simons Island and Don Bellis of Douglasville; a daughter, Vicki B. Hufstetler of Marietta; two brothers, Fred Godbehere of Birmingham, Ala., and Vernon Godbehere of Huntsville, Ala.; three sisters, Ruth Carroll of Birmingham, Ala., Jane Maple of Leeds, Ala., and Birtie Kirkland of Mobile, Ala.; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

BRUNSWICK -- Lewie Gates, 72, died Jan. 14 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Bogalusa, La., and a resident of Glynn County for the past 12 years, coming from Gulfport, Miss. He was retired from the Air Force, having served during Vietnam and the Korean Conflict.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Shirley Gates of Brunswick; four daughters, Connie Fox of Gulfport, Carlene Kinstle, Debbie Smith and Darlene Guy, all of Brunswick; three sons, Jimmy Gates of Saucier, Miss., and Johnny and Larry Gates, both of Gulfport; 22 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

VIDALIA -- Hoke S. Evans, 91, died Jan. 14 at Meadows Regional Medical Center. He was a retired steam fitter and welder. He had served in the Navy. He was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church near Lyons.
SURVIVORS: a son, Robert Evans of Irvine, Calif.; three daughters, Joan Vono of Syracuse, N.Y., Barbara Koolarian of Providence, R.I., and Mary Dockery of San Antonio; 17 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Rose J. Harrington
CLYO -- Mrs. Rose Elizabeth "Lizzie" J. Harrington, 103, died Jan. 12 at Effingham County Hospital Extended Care Facilities. She was born in Hardeeville and moved to Effingham County. She was a homemaker and a member of Pentecostal Holiness Church in Clyo.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Lonnie Mae Milton of Clyo; a son, Henry Reddick of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Irene Wright of Charleston, and Annie Evans of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Rosa Jones of Egypt; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
