LUDOWICI -- Nita Wasdin Ballance, 67, died Jan. 1 at Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla. She was a longtime resident of Long County, a Baptist and the widow of Fred David Ballance.

ALEXANDER -- Mary C. Hadden Harmon, 56, died Jan. 2 at home. She was a native of Jenkins County and retired from King Mills. She was a member of Dry Branch Baptist Church in Perkins and attended Bethel Baptist Church in Alexander. She had been a resident of Burke County for 10 years.
SURVIVORS: two daughters, Melynda Stephens of Augusta and Crystal Rogers of Waynesboro; two brothers, Joe C. Chance of Perkins and Tommy Chance of Savannah; a sister, Joyce C. Hills of Alexander; and four grandchildren.

John C. Hopkins
John C. Hopkins, 85, died Jan. 2 at Savannah Beach Nursing Home. He was a native of Big Stone Gap, Va., and lived in Atlanta for 30 years before moving to Savannah in 1989. Before retiring, he was a pressman with the Atlanta Journal and Constitution and was a member of the Pressman's Union. He was a volunteer and participant in the Special Olympics and was a Baptist.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Mabel Hopkins of Savannah; two daughters, Barbara Pinkston of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Sandi Klimek of Savannah; a son, Douglas Hopkins of Savannah; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. June Wilbanks Ivie, 76, died Jan. 1 at home. She was a native and longtime resident of Greenville, S.C., and a resident of Savannah since 1993. She attended the Unity Church.

HINESVILLE -- Linda Sue Morris Miller, 50, died Jan. 1 at home. She was a native of Richmond, Ky,. and lived in Okinawa, Japan, before moving to Hinesville in 1985. She was employed with civil service as an administrative supervisor for more than 25 years. She was a homemaker and a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Annapolis, Md.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Moreland T. Miller of Hinesville; a daughter, Sandra Anne Miller of Savannah; a son, Jonathan Joseph Miller of Hinesville; her parents, Lucille and Lawrence T. Morris of Harrodsburg, Ky.; four sisters, Sharon K. Claudia L. Parsons
WALTERBORO, S.C. -- Mrs. Claudia Linder Parsons, 91, died Jan. 2 at Summerville Presbyterian Home. She was a native of Savannah and the first woman to serve on the Cotton Exchange in Savannah. She also served as secretary on the Naval Revue Magazine until purchasing it upon the death of former Mayor Thomas Gamble of Savannah. She was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church and was co-owner of Parson Dress Shop in Walterboro. She was the widow of Dowse B. Hamm and Fred C. Parsons.
SURVIVORS: several nieces and nephews.

ADRIAN -- Mrs. Ester Lee Powell, 89, died Jan. 1 at Treutlen County Nursing Home. She was a native of Johnson County and lived in Gray before returning in 1972. She was a homemaker and a member of Scott Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: three daughters, Flossie Ricks, Maggie Lee Douglas and Melba Wilcher all of Adrian; two daughters-in-law, Claudie Mae Powell of Scott and Jerri Powell of Macon; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Harry C. Robbins Jr.
CLAXTON -- Harry Cuthbert "Yogi" Robbins Jr., 57, died Dec. 31 at a hospital in Selma, Ala. He was a native of Daisy, but lived in Selma for a number of years. He served four years with the Air Force.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Nancy S. Robbins of Selma; two daughters, Tonya Robbins of Selma and Kristine Blair of Prattville, Ala.; a son, Harry C. Robbins III of Selma; and a grandson, Trea Blair of Prattville.

BRUNSWICK -- Mrs. Retha Mae Johnson Sapp, 82, died Jan. 1 at home. She was a native of Wayne County and a resident of Brunswick most of her life. She was a member of Golden Isles Parkway Church of God and the Sanctuary Sunday School. She was a homemaker.

Mary E. Sowell
Miss Mary Emma Sowell, 81, died Jan. 1 at Azalealand Nursing Home. She was a native of Hilltonia and a longtime resident of Savannah. She was a retired elementary school teacher, having taught at Juliette Gordon Low School for many years. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, Georgia Teachers Association and the Order of the Eastern Star.
SURVIVORS: a brother, Paul Newton Sowell of Maiden, N.C.; three nieces, Dr. Jana H. Marjenhoff of Bedford, Ind., Joan S. Hart of Hickory, N.C., and Deborah S. McCall of Gastonia, N.C.; a nephew, Jerry L. Sowell of Maiden; and a cousin, Sarah Waters of Sylvania.

Harry J. Wells
Harry Joseph Wells, 85, died Jan. 1 at Candler Hospital. He was a native of Chatham County and the widower of Mary Hubbard Wells. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church. He worked with the Savannah Police Department for 11 years before joining the Chatham County Police Department, where he served as a lieutenant for more than 22 years before retiring. He was a member of the Peace Officers Association.
SURVIVORS: a son and daughter-in-law, Harry J. Wells Jr. and Marcia E. Wells of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; a sister, Alma Wells Upchurch Edgerton of Savannah; a sister-in-law, Agnes Davis Wells of Savannah; two grandchildren, Harry J. Wells III and Heather Wells, both of Charleston; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

HAMPTON, S.C. -- Mrs. Ernestine Priester Altman, 94, died Jan. 2 at Hampton Regional Medical Center. She was born in Hampton County. She was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Run Baptist Church, where she had been active with the Missionary Group, Vacation Bible School and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was the widow of William Raymond Altman.
SURVIVORS: two sons, Martin Altman of Hampton and George Altman of Mount Pleasant; four daughters, Gloria Bowers, JoAnn Freeman and Juanita Peeples, all of Hampton, and Lorain Priester of Allendale; three sisters, Tillar and Nellie Mole, both of Hampton, and Jessie Lee Fennell of North Charleston; 28 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

HILTON HEAD ISLAND -- James Bolger, 76, died Jan. 2 at Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics. He was born in Bronx, N.Y., and moved to Sun City in 1999 from Medford, Long Island, N.Y. He retired from Gulfstream Aerospace Corp.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Lorelei Marriotti Bolger of Hilton Head Island; two sons, James J. Bolger of Westborough, Mass., and David C. Bolger of Selden, N.Y.; two daughters, JoJeanne B. He retired from the Army after 25 years and also retired from Met Life Insurance Co. He was a member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church and a life member of the Retired Officers Association, Golden Isles Chapter, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Golden Isles Chapter No. 4092. He was a member of Ocean Lodge No. 214, F&AM (Knight York Cross of Honor) Brunswick, Chapter No. 66 R.A.M., Ballard Council No. 16 S.M., St. Elmo Commandery No. 21, Knights Templar, Oglethorpe Conclave and Order of Red Cross of Constantine.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Cleo R. Dickerson of Brunswick; two stepsons, David R. Osborne and Cornell Osborne, both of Brunswick; a sister, Jean Tantalo of Sun City, Ariz.; four grandchildren, a great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
