Mrs. Frances Joshua Jackson, 80, died Jan. 5 at Savannah Rehabilitation Center. She was a native of Adrian and a resident of Savannah for many years. She was a founding member of Pentecostal Church of Christ and served on the Mother Board.

Herbert Sheppard, 75, died Jan. 4 at home. He was a native of Savannah. He attended Chatham County public schools and retired from Mullinex Amusement Co. He was an Army veteran.

Florence G. Wiley
Mrs. Florence Gibbons Wiley, 76, died Jan. 5 at home. She was a native of Savannah. She was a member of Clifton Baptist Church and sang in the Senior Choir. She was a musician and played for several churches many years ago. She was a former employee of the Chatham County Board of Education and served as a cook at Robert W. Groves High School.

Alma Browder
Mrs. Alma Browder, 81, of Bloomingdale, died Jan. 3 at Tara Nursing Home in Thunderbolt. She was born in Thomasville, N.C., and lived in New York for 50 years before returning to Georgia. She was a member of Elmwood Church of God in Columbia.

Calvin Lane Sr.
MILLEN -- Calvin Lane Sr., 99, died Jan. 2 at Jenkins County Hospital. He was born in Jenkins County and was a retired farmer. He was a member of Lane Grove Baptist Church, chairman deacon of the Usher Board, superintendent of the Sunday school and a member of Pilgrim Association.
SURVIVORS: five sons, Sam Lane of Portal, Alexander Lane of Elmhurst, Ill., Calvin Lane Jr., Elbert Lane and Tony Lane, all of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; three daughters, Lona Lovett of Statesboro, Susie Harden of Atlanta and Corine Thomas of Millen; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mary M. Manier
ST. SIMONS ISLAND -- Mary Murray Manier, 79, died Jan. 6 at Brian Center Inn on St. Simons Island. She was born in Wynn, Ark., and lived in Glynn County since 1977. She attended business college and retired from Sea Island Co. as a bookkeeper with 11 years of service. She was a member of St. Simons Women's Club, Brunswick-Golden Isles Antique Auto Club and First United Methodist Church of Brunswick.
SURVIVORS: her husband, Allen H. Manier of St. Simons Island; two daughters, Joy Erwin of Auburn and Catherine Riddle of Johnson City, Tenn.; a half brother, Lynn Cranford of Memphis, Tenn.; and a grandson, Christopher Erwin of Auburn. MIDWAY -- Stewart Henry Mattair, 93, died Jan. 5 at home under care of Hospice of Hinesville. He was born in Montbrook, Fla., and lived in Thomasville most of his life before moving to Midway. He retired as a foreman with Seaboard Coast Line Railroad. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the widower of Alice Thelma Smith Mattair .

J. Taylor McMakin
SANFORD, Fla. -- J. Taylor McMakin, 82, died Dec. 26 at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center in Brunswick. He was born in Annapolis, Md., and lived in Sanford for 30 years. He was a member of Sanford Meadows Seventh-day Adventist Church and retired from the Navy.
SURVIVORS: two sons, John T. McMakin of Brunswick and William C. McMakin of Sanford; a brother, Joseph P. McMakin of Wilmington, Del.; two grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. WARNER ROBINS -- Mrs. Loviett Hall Miller died Jan. 2 at Elberta Health Care. She was a former resident of Hazlehurst and a member of St. Matthew's AME Church for many years.

BRUNSWICK -- Jesse Newbern Jr., 81, died Jan. 6 at home. He was a native of Broxton and a resident of Glynn County the past 55 years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Brunswick, a former member of the Board of Trustees and a former chairman of the Pastor Parish Committee. He was a member of Ocean Lodge No. 214, F.&A.M., and a former director of Boys Estate, whose the library is named in his honor. He was treasurer of Quail Run Homeowners Association. He retired as co-owner of South Georgia Millwork of Brunswick.
SURVIVORS: three daughters, Juanda N. Ponsell of Griffin, Hoy N. Cook of Jacksonville, Fla., and Janice N. Edna Arnett Reynolds, 89, died Jan. 5 at home. She was born in Screven County and was a former resident of Bradenton, Fla. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was married to the late William B. Cowart and the late Clarence Reynolds.

The Rev. Japan Holmes Sr.
The Rev. Japan Holmes Sr., 77, died Jan. 4 at Candler Hospital. He was born in Screven and lived in Savannah most of his life. He was an Army veteran of World War II and retired from Union Camp Corp. after 39 years of service. He was a member of First Union Baptist Church and was pastor of both Miller Grove and Springhill Baptist churches in Statesboro. He was moderator of the Fourth District Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Association and a son of First Union Baptist Church.
SURVIVORS: his wife, Carrie M. Holmes of Savannah; four sons, Elder Jerome Goldwire of De Riddle, La., Japan Holmes Jr. of Savannah, Bernard L. Holmes of Akron, Ohio, and Calvin C. Holmes of Jacksonville, Fla.; two brothers, the Rev. Aaron P. The Rev. Walker D. Sapp
The Rev. Walker Dent Sapp died Jan. 5 at Candler Hospital. He was born in Jenkins County and was a retired pastor of Rocky Ford Baptist Church and Needful Baptist Church, Millen. He lived in Savannah for many years and was owner of Sapp's Barber Shop and a member of Tremont Temple Baptist Church.

WARNER ROBINS -- Mrs. Laura Quarterman, 82, died Jan. 3 at Houston County Medical Center. She was born and educated in Bryan County. She lived in Miami for 40 years before moving to Richmond Hill in 1983. She lived in Warner Robins since 1993. She was a homemaker and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Richmond Hill.
SURVIVORS: a daughter, Roxcena Lewis of Warner Robins; a son, Lawrence Quarterman of Miami; a brother, Willie Jackson of Richmond Hill; a son-in-law, Allen Lewis of Warner Robins; a daughter-in-law, Cynthia Quarterman of Miami; and five grandchildren, Dr. Allen Lewis of Elizabethtown, Ky., Capt. Fulton E. Bell
SHADY DALE -- Fulton E. Bell, 87, died Jan. 5. He was born in Hagan and was the widower of Janet Rogers. He was an industrial arts teacher at Savannah High School and in the late 1930s became director of Vocational and Industrial Arts Trade School in Richmond Hill. He later became a farmer in Savannah. He was later a farm manager and farmer in Waynesboro, and his last farm was in Shady Dale.
SURVIVORS: three sons, Roger, William and Henry; a sister, Ethel Dillard of Arnoldsville; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Loyd E. Ends, 79, died Dec. 6 at Candler Hospital. He was a native of Indianapolis and a resident of Savannah since 1984. He was a retired salesman in Indianapolis and was a greeter at Wal-Mart Store near the Savannah Mall. He was a member of Alee Temple, the Scottish Rite, the Frank F. Baker Masonic Lodge No. 46 and the Eastern Star. He was also a member of Chapel-in-the-Gardens Presbyterian Church and an Army veteran.
