Sallie Black, 100, ex-teacher
SALUDA Sallie Edwards "Mrs. Sallie" Black, 100, a former teacher, died April 28, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood. Widow of O.W. Black Jr., she was born in Saluda County, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clark Edwards. She attended Winthrop College and taught in the public schools of Cheraw, Bennetsville and Chesterfield before returning to Saluda County in 1930. She then taught in Batesburg and Saluda schools. After 1932, she helped her husband run their cattle business at The Circle B Ranch. She joined Red Bank Baptist Church in 1937 and served as a children s Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years and as a director of children s church. She was the Sunbeam leader, director of the Ridge Association and the WMU at the church for many years. She also worked with the Training Union and BYPU. She was a member of the Saluda Gardens Club, the WCTU and LTL, and served as a substitute teacher and lunchroom supervisor. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Harriet Black Davis of Kings Mountain, N.C.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services were at 11:30 a.m. today at Red Bank Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at Ramey Funeral Home. Ramey Funeral Home is in charge.

Kathryn Elizabeth Henderson Capici
HILTON HEAD ISLAND Kathryn Elizabeth Henderson Capici, 77, wife of Anthony J. Capici, died April 29, 2000, at her home. Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Charles A. Henderson and Kate Calvert. She moved to Hilton Head Island in 1972. She retried as an executive secretary with Palmetto Electric and was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Weldon (Ronnie Capici) Wall and Mrs. Phillip J. (Kathryn Capici Porter); a brother, Charles A. Henderson of Columbia; and four grandchildren. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. William Rumsey. Marie Claxton, 100, retired teacher
GREENWOOD Marie LeVerne Smith Claxton, a retired school teacher, died April 29, 2000, at the Martha Franks Retirement Center, Laurens, at the age of 100. The widow of M.L. Claxton, she was born in Rocky Ford, Ga., a daughter of the late Dr. Charles Oslin Smith and Mary L. Benedict. She attended Oglethorpe University, taught in Atlanta public schools and was a member of the Georgia Retired Teachers Association. She was a charter member of Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Atlanta, and the Aliae Sunday School Class of the church. Living in Greenwood since 1953 and formerly of 429 Pennsylvania Ave., she was a member of First Baptist Church of Greenwood and the Benson Sunday School Class. She was also a member of Mount Ariel Chapter of NSDAR, the Greenwood Woman s Club and the Daffodil Garden Club. She was the last member of her immediate family. Survivors include nieces and a nephew. Graveside services will be at 3 Wednesday in Westview Cemetery, Atlanta, conducted by Willard D. Smith. Memorials may be made to a charity of one s choice. Leon W. Crouch
BATESBURG Leon Walter Crouch, 91, widower of Sarah Hann Crouch, died April 29, 2000. Born in Saluda County, he was a son of the late Frank W. and Annie Winn Crouch. He worked with the South Carolina Highway Department Engineers from 1928-42 and with the U.S. Engineers from 1942-44. After serving in the Army during World War II, he returned to form Crouch Brothers Farm and Construction. He served on many Saluda County agricultural committees and was named Saluda County Cattleman of the Year in 1993. He was a member of St. John s United Methodist Church. Survivors include a son, L. Edwin Crouch of Batesburg; a daughter, Mrs. Martin (Linda) Lightsey of Staunton, Va.; a brother, Frank W. Crouch of White Rock; and two grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Barr-Price Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Marty Nason. Burial will be in Ridge Crest Memorial Park. Pallbearers are William C. Born in Cleveland, Ga., she was a daughter the late John Wesley and Maggie Lackey Mobley. She was a former employee of J.P. Stevens and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include a son, James Curtis Mobley of Gadsden, Ala.; two daughters, Bernice M. Evans of the home and Betty M. MARION Mary Fleming Brown, 82, of Penderboro Road, widow of D.B. Brown Jr., died April 21, 2000, at Marion County Medical Center. Born in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Henry Quincy and Mattie Bell Hamilton Fleming. She retired from J.P. Stevens Co. in 1981, after 24 years of service. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg. Survivors include a son, Richard Brown of Raeford; two daughters, Ann B. Chavis of Surfside Beach and Brenda Foxworth of Marion; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Services were held at First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg, conducted by the Rev. BELTON Charles William "Bill" Coleman Jr., 50, of 222 Forest Lane, died April 30, 2000, at his home. Born in Greenwood, he was a son of Audrey Stewart Coleman and the late Charles William Coleman. He was a graduate of Mars Hill College and a management employee in the textile industry. He was a member of Belton Presbyterian Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher and an ordained elder. He retired from the Coast Guard and was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of VFW Post 10601 and the American Legion Post in Columbia. Leonard Napp
LEXINGTON Leonard Napp, 75, husband of Vivian Ross Napp, died April 24, 2000. Born in Yonkers, N.Y., he was a son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Andreckek Napp and a World War II Army veteran, serving in Europe. He received a master s of science degree in music education from Columbia University, New York City, in 1950 and taught music in Florida and Georgia. He also worked as a manager with W.T. Grant in Crisfield, Md., and in other retail sales positions. He moved to Columbia in 1969 and served as the Canteen Officer for the Dorn VA Hospital until 1971. Survivors include his wife; a son, Barry Ross Napp of Newport News, Va.; two daughters, Barbara Napp McLeod of Greenwood and Lori Roberta Napp of Vero Beach, Fla.; and three grandsons. He was also a past deacon of New Providence Baptist Church and active with Boy Scouts. He was a manager of Sumter Dairy for 16 years. Survivors include his wife of Hartsville; a son, Charles E. RIDGE SPRING Mamie Norman Myers, 47, of 3545 Columbia Highway, died May 1, 2000, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital in Columbia. Born in McCormick, she was a daughter of the late Jim and Mary Turman Norman. She graduated from Ridge Spring-Monetta High School in 1971, from Aiken Technical College in 1973 and from Paine College, Augusta, Ga., in 1978. She served with Wachovia Bank of Columbia for 18 years and was a member of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Aiken. Survivors include four sisters, Mary Norman-Boyd and Leila Norman, both of Ridge Spring, Bobbie Norman-Tutt of Aiken and Izora Norman-Gunter of Augusta; and three brothers, Charles Norman and Wilbert Norman, both of Ridge Spring and Joe Lewis Norman of Aiken. Survivors include her husband of Loris; three sons, Barry Spivey and Paul Ray Spivey, both of Loris and Bruce Allan Spivey of Union Mills, N.C.; two daughters, Donna Maria Boozer of Greenwood and June Ellen Lewis of Eastover; five brothers, Raymon Carlos and Roy Carlos, both of Belle Chase, La., Eugene Carlos and Ruben Carlos, both of New Orleans and Donald Carlos of Houma, La.; three sisters, Joyce Whitman of Couer Dalene, Idaho, Iris Pitrie of Houma and Claire Mackin of Foxworth, Miss.; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hardwick Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Earl J. Spivey Jr. Burial will be in Twin City Memorial Gardens. Johnny J. Watts Sr.
GREENWOOD Johnny Joseph Watts Sr., 58, of 143 University St., husband of Earline Roper Watts, died May 2, 2000, at Self Memorial Hospital. Born in Greenwood County, he was a son of the late Brawley Ted Watts Sr. and Ruby Lee Williams Watts. He was a member of Old Mount Zion Baptist Church, Epworth. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons, Johnny Joseph Watts Jr. of Yuma, Ariz. and Leon Frederick Watts of Greenwood; three stepsons, Bernard Roper of Greenwood, Vincent Roper of Fountain Inn and Travis Cunningham of Ware Shoals; four daughters, Erica Watts of the home, Pricilla Parks of Edgefield, LaQuetta Wideman and Cassandra Quarles, both of Greenwood; six brothers, Brawley Watts Jr., Jimmy Lee Watts, Henry Watts, Bryant Arthur Watts, Paul Dunbar Watts and Rufus Earl Watts, all of Greenwood; a sister, Mary Mobley of Greenwood; 18 grandchildren, two reared in the home, Eryn Watts and Kezoria Moss; and a great-grandchild. Services will be announced by Percival-Tompkins Funeral Home, which is in charge.

Margaret A. Woods
ELGIN Margaret Ann Woods, 65, widow of Lloyd N. Woods Sr., died May 1, 2000. Born in Junior, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Homer C. and Mabel Shomo Wagner. She retired from K-Mart. Survivors include two sons, Lloyd N. Woods Jr. of Troutdale, Ore. and Robert Ray Woods of San Diego; two daughters, Susan Kay Perry of Lugoff and Debra Ann Braciszewski of Columbia; a brother, James E. Wagner of Saluda; two sisters, Helen F. Galusha of Fonda, N.Y. and Kathy Warren of Garland, Texas; two grandsons, a step-granddaughter and a step-great-grandson. Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street, Columbia, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation is from 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.
