Myers, Fla., he was son of Dr. Carey Neilson Barry and Nina Westwood Barry of Fort Myers. He was a senior development chemist with Milliken & Co., Gilliland Plant in Laurens. He was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, where he served as a former chairman of Christian Education Committee, was a choir member and a Sunday school teacher. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of American Chemical Society. He was involved as assistant coach with area soccer teams and was a former president and executive committeeman of local Republican precincts. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Furman University in Greenville and received his Ph.D in Organic Chemistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Also surviving are his wife, Susan Lee Barry; three sons, John Neilson Barry, David Prentiss Barry and Andrew Lee Barry, all of the home; a brother, Michael Burriss Barry of Fort Myers; and a sister, Anne Hill Barry of Lexington, Ky. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Providence Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Daniel C. INMAN -- Helen Fowler "Mima" Calvert, 68, of 34 2nd St. died Aug. 31, 1999, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Inman, she was the widow of Sid Calvert Jr. and daughter of the late Samuel and Bessie Broom Fowler. She was a member of Lighthouse Christian Fellowship and had retired from Inman Mills. Surviving are three daughters, Cathy Guffey and Vickie Branch of Inman and Kay Calvert of the home; five sisters, Blanche Bagwell of Inman, Betty Lankford of Spartanburg, Nannie Lou Mullinax of Rock Hill, Julia Chapman of Morganton, N.C., and Margie Knighton of Augusta, Ga.; a brother, Callie Fowler of Spartanburg; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. CHESNEE -- Alfred Philip Finkelstein, 73, of 271 Oakmont St. died Aug. 30, 1999, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of London, England, he was son of the late Joseph and Jane Kleinsinger Finkelstein. He retired in 1983 as a full-time professor from State University of New York at Albany after 25 years of service. He was formerly employed by Spartanburg Day School where he taught general and advanced placement chemistry and physics. Surviving are his wife, Elsie Landau Finkelstein; two daughters, Martha Jo Vadney of Colonie, N.Y., and Deborah Ann Finkelstein of Houston, Texas; a brother, Laurence Fenton of London; a sister, Sarah Goldblat of Coral Springs, Fla.; and three grandchildren. MARIETTA -- Diana Kay Bowers, 38, of 814 Bowers Road died Sept. 1, 1999, after a battle with brain cancer. A native of Greenville County, she was daughter of Jack E. and Betty J. Moore Bowers of Marietta. She was a former executive assistant to the general manager of WJMZ Radio and was a member of Marietta First Baptist Church. Also surviving are a daughter, Veronica Leigh of Marietta; a sister, Deborah Jones of Marietta; a brother, Danny Bowers of Marietta; her grandparents, Emmett and Blanche Moore of Lake Toxaway, N.C.; and nieces and nephews. He was owner and operator of C&S Heating & Air Co. He attended Jackson Baptist Church and was an Army veteran of the Korean War. Surviving are his wife, Thelma Burgess Sturgill; a son, Anthony Carrol Sturgill of the home; a daughter, Phyllis Higgins of Wellford; and a brother, John Claude Sturgill of Wellford. John Calhoun Horton, 88, of 1735 Old Charlotte Road died Oct. 26, 1999, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Naples, Texas, he was the widower of Catherine Ballard Horton and son of the late Clarence Lockwood and Nancy Kimbrell Horton. He was a member of Carlisle Wesleyan Church and attended Park Hill Baptist Church. He was employed with W.N. Kirkland Inc. for more than 25 years. He was a member of Spartanburg Masonic Lodge No. 70, Scottish Rite, and Shriner's Textile League baseball. He coached Little League and Pony League ball for more than 10 years. He was a Army veteran of World War II, serving in Company B, 20th Engineers that landed at Omaha Beach, Normandy, on D-Day. Surviving are two daughters, Claudia Horton of Asheville, N.C., Cheryl Horton Ellefeson of Spartanburg; a son, Dean Horton of Columbia; and two grandchildren. Claude C. Tate
COLUMBIA -- Claude C. Tate, 88, formerly of Kenilworth Road, died Oct. 25, 1999, at Generations Assisted Living in Batesburg. A native of Gaffney, he was the widower of Pauline W. Tate and son of the late Claude Webster Tate and Elizabeth Jane Williams Tate. He was a member of Shandon Baptist Church, where he had served as a Sunday school teacher for more than 40 years and as a life deacon. He was the retired owner of Tate Realty and a former member of the South Carolina Real Estate Board. He also had served as state president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, as past chairman of the board of directors for the Palmetto Baptist Medical Center and was a former board member for First Carolina Savings and Loan. He was a Master Mason and a member of the York Rite. He had been active with the Boy Scouts of America and was a past State Singles and Doubles Hand Ball Champion. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II. Surviving are a son, David B. Tate of Columbia, a daughter, Claudia Tate Money of Batesburg-Leesville; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Shandon Baptist Church with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. A native of Spartanburg County, he was son of Dorothy Scruggs Simmons of Woodruff and the late James Ballard. He was a member of Church of God of Inman. Surviving are his wife, Alice McGaha Worthy Ballard; his stepfather, James Simmons of Woodruff; a son, Robert E. Ballard of Blairsville; a daughter, Robyn E. Ballard of Blairsville; a stepson, Jack E. Worthy of Blairsville; three brothers, James Ballard and Michael Simmons, both of Spartanburg, and Joseph Ballard of Landrum; and two sisters, Teresa Corn of Boiling Springs and Nancy Faye Greenway of Spartanburg. WOODRUFF -- William Theodore "Bill" Culbreath Sr., 69, of 1050 Cross Anchor Road died Oct. 27, 1999, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Union, he was son of the late William Thomas and Mary Louise Long Culbreath. He was the owner and operator of Woodruff Hardware and Farm Supply and the former owner and operator of Union Hardware. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Woodruff, where he had served as a deacon. He was a member of the Woodruff Chamber of Commerce and had served as president of the Woodruff Lions Club. He was a 1947 graduate of Union High School. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Hayes Culbreath; a daughter, Anna Culbreath Nichols of Winston Salem, N.C.; a son, William Theodore "Ted" Clubreath Jr. of Spartanburg; three sisters, Mary Thomas Cook of West Columbia, Colman Jennings of Newberry and Frances Huggins of Columbia; and two grandchildren. She was a member of Thompson Chapel Baptist Church in Jonesville, where she was a member of the Sympathy Club and an usher. Surviving are two daughters, Grace Beasley of the home and Betty A. A native of Richmond, Va., he was son of Rosylind Green Maybry of Campobello and the late Charles H. Maybry. He was a member of Campobello First Baptist Church and retired as a self-employed car dealer. He was a Shriner, a Gideon and a former chaplain with Inman Community Fire Department. He was a retired contractor and the owner of B & L Construction Co. Surviving are his wife, Peggy Horton Loftis; two daughters, Renee Blackwell and Cindy Peterson, both of Campobello; two sons, Nathan and Kevin Loftis, both of Campobello; two sisters, Betty Norton of Campobello and Nona McClure of Boiling Springs; two brothers, Jerry Loftis of Lyman and David Loftis of Campobello; eight grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. CENTRAL PACOLET -- Kathleen Bennett, 83, of 210 Chestnut St. died Jan. 12, 2000, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Pacolet Mills, she was daughter of the late Ernest and Cora Owensby Mabry. She was a member of Brown's Chapel Baptist Church of Pacolet and retired from Pacolet Manufacturing Co. Surviving are a sister, Connie Gonsalves of Pacolet; a brother, Joe Mabry of Spartanburg; a nephew, Allen Petty of the home; and several other nephews and nieces. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today in Pacolet Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. William Pace. Ralph Bert Lambert, 74, of 101 Bonner Road died Jan. 11, 2000, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg County, he was son of the late James Ruby and Maxie Quillen Lambert. He was a supervisor at Beaumont Mills and retired after 40 years of service. He was a member of Beaumont Baptist Church, where he was a former Sunday school teacher and deacon. He was a lifetime member of Beaumont Lodge No. 376 AFM. He was an Army veteran of World War II. Surviving are his wife, Georgia Marie Scruggs Lambert; a daughter, Vicki L. Hall of Spartanburg; two sons, Ronnie Lambert and Geary L. Lambert, both of Spartanburg; a sister, Norma Pasco of Waterloo; a brother, James Lambert of Pacolet; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Mildred "Jewell" Gillis, 72, died Jan. 11, 2000, in Earl B. Hadlow Center in Jacksonville. A native of Laurens, she was daughter of Everett and Daisy Hughes Gwinn. She was a member of St. Mathew's Catholic Church and was an active member of Ladies of the Moose, L.O.O.M. Lodge No. 2020 in Jacksonville, serving in the offices of Past Sr. Regent 1990-1991, Academy of Friendship Degree and Junior Regent Chaplain in 1985. She moved to Jacksonville from Hamilton, Bermuda, where she was stationed wither her husband, who served in the Navy. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Gillis; two sons, David B. Gillis of Jaksonville and Robert Kent Gillis of Deltona, Fla.; three daughters, Vickie Monti of Brunswick, Ga., Carolyn Gillis of Jacksonville and Kimberly Schreiber of Woodbridge, Va.; a brother, Everett Gwinn of Spartanburg; six sisters, Catherine Henderson, Virginia O'Sullivan and Barbara Gwinn, all of Spartanburg, Jean McElrath of Hemingway, Agnes Rogers of Charleston and Frances Brannon of Cowpens; and two grandchildren. She was first married to the late Ora D. Gaston. Surviving are her husband, Judson L. "Jud" Funderburk of Lancaster; a daughter, Alice Higgins of Gaffney; two sisters, Hazel Steele of Lancaster, and Corinne Moore of Charleston and a stepdaughter, Katherine Funderburk Moore of Atlanta. Walter J. Killough Sr.
GULFPORT, Mich. -- Walter J. Killough Sr., 84, of the Naval Home, formerly of Charlotte, N.C., died Jan. 1, 2000. A native of Charlotte, he was husband of the late Vivian Simmons Killough. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and a member of Oasis Shrine Temple. He was a member of Big Spring United Methodist Church and president of Standard Crankshaft in Charlotte. He was decorated for his service in the Navy, having served on a submarine during World War II, and in the Korean War. He was part of the ground crew, when the Hindenburg crashed in Lakehurst, N.J., in 1937. He retired as a master chief petty officer from the Navy. Surviving are two sons, John W. Killough of Landrum and Walter J. Killough Jr. of Tryon, N.C.; five grandsons; and a great-grandson. Services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, conducted by the Rev.
