Jayesh Patel and Deep Patel
Father and Son Jayesh Patel, 34, husband of Kirti Patel, and his son, Deep Patel, 2, both of 755 North Duncan By-Pass, Union, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Mr. Patel was born in Navsari, India, on July 1, 1969, a son of Ishvar and Manju Patel of Union. He was a manager of the American Inn. Deep Patel was born in Bardoli, India, on Dec. 1, 2000, and was a student at Union Christian Day School.
In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Patel is survived by eight sisters, Jaya Patel, Nilu Patel, Gipaben Patel, Niru Patel and Narmadi Patel, all of India, and Parul Patel of Mauldin, and Trupti and Trisha Patel, both of Virginia; three brothers, Dinesh Patel of Watertown, N.Y., Bipin Patel and Narmadi Patel, both of India; an uncle and aunt, Nagin (Babu) and Hansa Patel of Virginia; an aunt, Gulab Patel of India; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thakor and Jasuben Patel of India.
Deep Patel is survived in addition to his mother, his paternal grandparents, Ishvar and Manju Patel of Union and his maternal grandparents, Thakor and Jasuben Patel of India and a number of aunts and uncles. Funeral services were held at noon today at the S.R. Holcome Funeral Chapel. The family is at the home, 755 North Duncan By-Pass, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.

Man, son killed when horse hits car
CROSS ANCHOR - Two members of a Union family on their way to a worship service were killed Saturday night when the car they were riding in struck a horse. Jayesh Patel, 35, and his son, Deep, 2, both died in the wreck, which occurred around 8:10 p.m. on S.C. 49 near Browning Road.
They were seated together in the front passenger seat of a 2000 Nissan Maxima driven by Urmil Patel, 24, also of Union, Lance Cpl. Dan Marsceau of the South Carolina Highway patrol said. The car was traveling west on S.C. 49 when a horse came running toward the vehicle, Marsceau said. They met in the roadway and the horse struck the passenger side of the vehicle.
Wendy Alley, an investigator with the Spartanburg County Coroner's Office, said both the Patels were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. They died from closed head trauma. Urmil Patel was not injured, Marsceau said.
Three other people who were riding in the back seat were injured, but their injuries were not life-threatening, he said. The horse also died. Its owner was located Sunday, Marsceau said. The wreck is still under investigation. The family was on their way to a temple in Greenville when the wreck occurred. Jayesh Patel, a native of India, was the manager of American Inn, and the family lives at the motel on 755 North Duncan By-Pass.
Deep Patel attended school at Union Christian Day School. Today, flags at the school are at half mast and the school's sign reads, In loving memory of Jayesh and Deep Patel. Superintendent Roger Estes said Deep, who would have turned 3 years old in December, already was enrolled in 4-year-old kindergarten. He was that intelligent, he said. He was an adorable child who always had a bounce in his step.
Estes said he had been to visit the Patel family. He said teachers planned to gather together Deep's work, put it in a folder and present it to his family. Funeral services for the Patels will be held today.

James Anderson Sanford
Vietnam War veteran

James Anderson Sanford, 57, husband of Judy Ann Sinclair, of 2010 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003, at his home. Mr. Sanford was born in Union on Aug. 5, 1946, a son of the late Marshall and Annie Pearl Tucker Sanford. He was a graduate of Roebuck High School and attended Spartanburg Technical College. Mr. Sanford was owner and operator of Sanford and Son Logging Co. and was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Vietnam War. He was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church where he served on the church maintenance committee and had previously taught Sunday School.

Surviving in addition to his wife is a daughter, Annette Sanford of the home; a son, Terry Sanford of Pauline; a sister, Marie Farmer of Enoree; a granddaughter, Katlyn Sanford; and a special niece, Randi Canupp. Mr. Sanford was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Forrester. Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church by Dr. Randolph Pettit, Rev. Melvin Shelton and Rev. Monty King. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were James Sinclair, Otis Hembree, Joe Billings, Alan Harvey, Keith Isler and Ray Tucker. The following were asked to assemble at the church Sunday afternoon at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: David Hopkins, Bobby Joe Smith, Larry Wilson, Dean Smith, Joey Chandler, Bobby DeHart, Grady Kirby, Paul Kirby, Robert Burnette, John Sellars, Bobby Sellars, Charles Surrett, Teddy Mann, Dudley Adams and J.W. Billings.

The family received friends in the church immediately following the burial. Memorials may be made to Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, Building Fund, 2153 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, S.C. 29321 or to Union County Cancer Service, c/o Ola Jean Kelly, 117 Fant Lane, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 2010 Mt. Lebanon Road, Buffalo, S.C. 2931. William H. Smith
Buffalo native

William Hosea Smith, 67, of 2946 Mt. Lebanon Road, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at Ellen Sagar Nursing Home after a long illness. Mr. Smith has gone to be with the Lord where he will be able to verbally communicate. Mr. Smith was born in Buffalo, March 24, 1936, a son of Eulalia Lawson Smith of the home and the late Ernest E. Smith. He was a member of Putman Baptist Church where he served as usher of the church for many years.

Surviving in addition to his mother are:a brother and sister-in-law, Ernest Everette and Joan Smith of Buffalo; a niece, Betsy Smoak and a nephew, Rick Smith, both of Columbia; a great niece, Hannah Smith and a great nephew, Alan Smith, both of Columbia. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Putman Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald Tillman and the Rev.

Otis McCluney. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be John Ward, Tommy Lawson, John Lawson, Alfred Moore, Scottie Childers and Steve Freeman. The following are asked to assemble at the church Tuesday at 10:45 a.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of Mr. Smith's Sunday School Class, the staff of Ellen Sagar Nursing Home, Johnny Alexander, Ralph and Janie Childers, Jerry Burgess, Jerry Lawson, Dr. Vivian Clark, Dennis Sherbert, Glenn Sherbert, Nancy Childers, Bertie Kingsmore, Clyde McSwain and Ray Freeman.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday to await the hour of service. Memorials may be made to Putman Baptist Church, 3692 Buffalo-West Springs Highway, Buffalo, S.C. 29321. Virgie T. Stapleton

Virgie Tipton Stapleton, 89, of 102 Pinedale Ave., Union, widow of Marsh Stapleton, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, in Oakmont Nursing Home. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Gwendolyn Ann Norris
Prepco Electric Co. supervisor

Gwendolyn Ann Norris, 49, of Oxon Hill, Md., died Thursday, Sept.25, 2003, in Oxon Hill. She was born April 9, 1954, a daughter of the late Aubrey Norris Sr. and Mattie Browning Norris. She was a member of Oxon Hill Baptist Church. She was employed by Prepco Electric Co. for 29 years and was a supervisor.

Surviving are three brothers, Aubrey Norris Jr. and John D. Norris Sr. of Staten Island, N.Y., and Charles E. Norris of Buffalo; and four sisters, Ruth H. Norris of Metuchen, N.J., Irene Nichols of Decatur, Ga., Bessie Lloyd of Staten Island, N.Y., and Iola Jones of Silver Spring, Md.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wyatt Chapel Baptist Church of Buffalo conducted by the Rev. Dr. Jefferson McDowell. Burial will be in the Wyatt Chapel Church Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be family and friends. There will be no visitation but family and friends may sign the register at the Union Community Funeral Home until 7 p.m. today. The family is at 194 Peakeville Road, Buffalo. The Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Virgie T. Stapleton
Retired from Monarch Plant

Virgie Tipton Stapleton, 89, of 102 Pinedale Ave., Union, widow of Marsh Stapleton, died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home. Mrs. Stapleton was born in Whitney on Aug. 4, 1916, a daughter of the late Leonard Tipton Sr. and Ada Allen Tipton. She was a member of Westside Baptist Church and was retired from Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant.

Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Nancy Tipton Brandt and Robert Brandt of Shiremanstown, Pa.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard Tipton Jr. and Mildred Trammell Tipton, John D. Tipton and Anna Lou Ivey Tipton, all of Union and Sibbie Tipton, widow of Vernon M. Tipton of Jonesville; two grandchildren, David E. Brandt of Shiremanstown, Pa. and Jacqueline Maddison of Voorhees, N. J.; three great-grandchildren, Benjamin Maddison, Jonathan Maddison and Diana Maddison, all of Voorhees, N. J.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Dr. Ken Snead and the Rev. Stanley Tipton. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends Wednesday night from 7 until 9. The family is at the home of her brother, Leonard and Mildred Tipton, 304 Stutts Ave. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

William D. Cheatham
Former barber shop owner

WHITMIRE William Davis Cheatham, 88, of 1862 Hwy. 66, Whitmire, died Sept. 30, 2002, in the Spartanburg Restorative Care Center. Mr. Cheatham was born in Whitmire and was a son of the late James Alexander and Fannie Agnes Watkins Cheatham. He was the former owner of Bill's Barber Shop, member of First Baptist Church and was an avid fisherman.

Surviving are his former wife, Alice Vinson Cheatham Stanley of Clinton; three sons, William C. Cheatham and his wife Loretta of Pauline; Robert C. Cheatham and his wife Phyllis of Monks Corner; and Michael D. Cheatham and his wife Sherry of Whitmire; one daughter, Mary Alice Arrowood and her husband Johnny (Ricky) of Whitmire; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 3 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.

Scott Edwards Sr.

Adolphus Scott Edwards Sr., 32, husband of Debbie Inman Edwards, of 136 Line St., died Sept. 30, 2002, at 12:33 p.m. from injuries received in an automobile accident. Mr. Edwards was born in Union on Aug. 13, 1970, a son of Harry D. Edwards Sr. of Inman and Carolyn Thomas Edwards of Lockhart. He was of the Church of God faith. Mr. Edwards was employed with Save-More Store.

Surviving in addition to his wife and parents are three daughters, Tiffany Scott Edwards, Cecily Paige Edwards and Amanda Sheryl-Lynn Edwards all of Union; a son, Adolphus (A.J.) Edwards of Union; his step-mother, Betty Edwards of Inman; three brothers, Harry D. Edwards Jr., Christopher Todd Edwards and Joshua Shane Edwards all of Union; a step-brother, Tony West of Inman; two step-sisters, Laura Rogers of Duncan and Luanne Green of Campobello; his mother and father-in-law, Harvey and Shirley Inman Smith of Union; a sister-in-law, Crickett Smith of Union; four nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 p.m. at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Roger Roof and Rev. Paul Tessner. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. After 5 p.m. today the body will be at the home, 136 Line St., Union, and will be placed in the funeral chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday to await the hour of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Adolphus Scott Edwards Sr. Memorial Fund, 136 Line St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Marion Garner
Employed with Charter Communications

Marion (Chunky) Garner, 50, of 121 Eubanks St., died at his residence Sept. 30, 2002. Mr. Garner was born in Union on Nov. 17, 1951, a son of Sara Greene Sprouse of Union and the late Eugene Garner. He was employed with Charter Communications.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his step-father, Henry Earl Sprouse of Union; a sister, Diane Burgess of Jonesville; two brothers, Robert E. Garner of Union and Lee Bogan of Portland, Tenn.; nine nieces and nephews, Whitney Garner, Eddie McAbee, Tammy Cannon, Jennifer McAbee, Jessica Taylor, Whitney Bogan, Michael Burgess, Daniel Burgess and Michael Bogan.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Union Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Jack Bratton. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9. The family is at the home of his mother and step-father, Sara and Henry Earl Sprouse, 135 Eubanks St., Union. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Baptist Church, PO Box 10, Union.
