Bernice M. Jeter
Retired from Monarch Mill

CARLISLE - Bernice Mobley Jeter, 67, of 418 Oakdale Ave., Carlisle, died Oct. 20, 2002, at her home after a lingering illness. Mrs. Jeter was born in Union County on Aug. 5, 1935, a daughter of the late Preston and Lizzie Jeter Mobley. She was a member of Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church and was retired from Monarch Mill with 35 years of service as a material handler.

Surviving in addition to her husband are five sons, James E. Jeter Jr. and Larry F. Jeter both of the home, Terry Lee (Joann) Jeter of Carlisle, Melvin Lewis Jeter of Jonesville, and David Lewis (Cynthia) Jeter of Union; three daughters, Annette (George) Vanderhorst and Roxie Ann (Stanley) Means both of Carlisle and Leah M. Jeter of the home; a brother, John M. Mobley of Carlisle; three sisters, Lottie C. Jennings, Cora Lee Mobley, and Hattie Mae Thompson all of Union; 20 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. at Jeter Chapel A.M.E. Church by the Rev. James Johnson Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was held at the home Wednesday evening. Public viewing was Wednesday from 1-7 p.m. and today from 9-11:30 a.m.

The body was placed in the church at 1 p.m. to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 418 Oakdale Ave., Carlisle. Whitney Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Harold H. Sprouse
Retired from Milliken & Co.

Sara Lawson Sprouse, 90, of Oakmont Nursing Home, wife of Harold H. Sprouse, died Oct. 23, 2002, at 4:35 p.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Sprouse was born in Union on Feb. 21, 1912, a daughter of the late John Lewis Lawson and Minnie Scales Lawson.

She was a member of Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class and a member of the church choir. Mrs. Sprouse was a graduate of Kelly-Pinckney High School and was retired from Milliken & Co., Lockhart Plant after 34 years of service and was a former employee of the C&S Cafeteria in Jonesville.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a sister, Elizabeth Lawson of Union; two brothers, J.L. Lawson and James Lawson both of Union and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Sprouse was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Lawson; and a brother, Perrin Lawson. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Keith Sweat, Rev. Richard Lewis and Rev. Alan West. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Sidney Lawson, Brad Horne, Gene Sprouse, Michael Morrison, John Morrison, Terry Sturgill and Ray Finch. The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 1:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Ulus Sturgill, Jimmy Faucett, David Faucett, James Farr, Donald Garner, Buck Sanders, and Billy Gregory. The following are asked to sit in a group: Linda Waters, Rhonda Gibson, Oakmont Nursing Staff, members of the Carlisle Hart Sunday School Class and members of the Louise Kirby Sunday School Class.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-8:30 and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her brother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. James Lawson, 1574 Kelly Road, Union. Memorials may be made to Foster's Chapel United Methodist Church, 392 Pea Ridge Highway, Jonesville, SC 29353. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Ricky Vaughan Jr.
Union County native

Richard Floyd (Ricky) Vaughan Jr., 41, of 747 Brown's Creek Church Road, Union, died Oct. 23, 2002 in Wallace Thomson Hospital. Mr. Vaughan was born in Union on Oct. 28, 1960, a son of Richard Floyd Vaughan Sr. of Union and Wanda Owenby Lockaby. He was a Baptist.

Surviving in addition to his parents are three daughters, Kacie Vaughan and Derrian Vaughan, both of the home and Hunter Vaughan of Jonesville; his step-father, Leon Lockaby; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Renae and Tommy Adams of Union and Melissa and Jerome McBride of Spartanburg; his paternal-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Vaughan of Union; his maternal grandfather, Johnny Owenby of Union and two step-brothers, Mike Lockaby of Columbia and Mark Murphy of Union.

The family is at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Renae and Tommy Adams, 537 Old Pump Station Road, Union. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Ruby Mae Beacham
Former Uniblend employee

Ruby Mae Beacham, of 119 Marcellus St., died Oct. 21, 2002, at her home after an extended illness. She was a daughter of the late Charlie Sr. and Willie Mae Beacham. ÒRuth MaeÓ, as she was affectionately known, was an employee of Uniblend Spinners, United Merchants Co. for many years. She was a member of the McBeth Baptist Church where she served as a member of the Adult Choir.

Surviving are: two daughters, Marilyn Kershaw and Cynthia Jeter; five sisters, Freddie Borah of Bellerose Terrace, N.Y.; Sarah Beacham of Manhasset, N.Y.; Mattie Beacham, Peggy Beacham and Sandra (Ralph) Tucker of Carlisle; four brothers, Leroy Beacham of Meansville, Pa.; Charlie Beacham of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Ray (Sallie) Beacham and Amos (Lisa) Beacham, both of Union; four grandchildren, Sanderia Jeter, Kamcshia Jeter, Lamarwin Kershaw and Lacretia Kershaw, two sons-in-law, James Kershaw and Chris Jeter; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at McBeth Baptist Church by Rev. T.D. Mauney, D.D. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. to await the hour of service. Visitation of the family is being held at the home, 119 Marcellus St. Public viewing will be held at the Union Community Funeral Home today until 7 p.m. and again on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Union Community Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mrs. James W. Black
Retired textile employee

Louise Knox Posey Black, age 81, wife of James Wayne Black, of 237 Haas St., died Oct. 24, 2002 at 3:35 a.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mrs. Black was born in Union on April 12, 1921, a daughter of the late Gettys Knox and Daisy Davis Knox Williams. She was a retired textile employee and was a member of the Ottaray Baptist Church.

Surviving in addition to her husband are three daughters and sons-in-law, June and Johnny Sexton, Judy and Curtis Babb and Linnie and Michael Wells all of Union; three sisters, Naomi Bates, Shirley Brannon and Brenda Shetley all of Union; four brothers, Bobby Knox, Ralph Knox, Olin Knox and Claudie Williams all of Union; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren which included Samuel David (D.J.) Jones who was reared in the home.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. at Ottaray Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Crocker, Rev. Neil Keisler and Rev. Scott Cobb. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ricky Black, Larry Black, Kenneth Black, Charles Black, Randy Davis and Eddie Sexton.

The following are asked to assemble at the church Saturday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Toney Sexton, Billy Haire, Todd Haire, Brad Clark, George Bates, Burton Bates, Junie Williams, Joey Brannon, Tim Brannon, Mike Brannon, Darrell Brannon, Stevie Knox, Ricky Knox and Kevin Shetley. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday to await the hour of service.

The family is at the home, 212 Haas St., Union. Memorials may be made to Ottaray Baptist Church, 200 Lowe St., Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Shirley Bradburn
Employed with Union Services

Shirley Virginia Brad-burn, 58, of Hunt Drive Apartments, 121 Barnado Road, died at her residence Oct. 24, 2002, after a sudden illness. Ms. Bradburn was born in Spartanburg on Aug. 11, 1944, a daughter of the late Leonard Ezell Bradburn and Lucille Melindy Taylor Bradburn. She was a member of the Salvation Army Citadel and was employed with Union Services.

Surviving are two daughters, Diane Epps of Wisconsin and Christy Bradburn of the home; a son, Mark Bradburn of Union; two sisters, Rhonda Hughes of Woodruff and Jeanette Parham of Union; five brothers, Anthony Bradburn of Pacolet, David Bradburn and Jerry Bradburn both of Union, Wayne Taylor of Spartanburg and Ricky Taylor of Union; four grandchildren, Brittany Bradburn, Paine Bradburn, Summer Hogan and Neil Hogan; and two aunts, Frances Taylor and Janie Taylor both of Pacolet.

Graveside services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Rosemont Cemetery by the Rev. Judy Hogan. Active pallbearers will be Chris Taylor, Marty Henderson, Jamie Bradburn, Chad Bradburn and Sammy Hughes. The body will remain at the funeral home. The family is at the home of her son, Mark Bradburn, Apt. B-1, Brittany Manor, Meansville Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Estelle Garland
North Carolina native

WHITMIRE - Estelle Burdell Walker Garland, 86, widow of Thurmon Garland, of 465 Eaves Road, Whitmire, went home to be with God on Oct. 23, 2002 at 1:25 p.m. Mrs. Garland was born in Stecoah, N.C. on Feb. 14, 1916, a daughter of the late Dawson and Mary Stillwell Walker. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Whitmire.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Eulalia and Steve Millwood and Ladenia and Larry Harmon, all of Whitmire; a son and daughter-in-law, R.G. and Phyllis Garland of Canton, N.C.; a sister, Virginia Walker of Canton, N.C.; a brother, Dale Walker of Robinsville, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Burdell Tramell of Whitmire and Candiace Willard of Whitmire, who also was her best friend for 74 years; 10 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Garland was predeceased by a son, Ronald Garland; a daughter, Lavenia Garland; and a granddaughter, Christy Harmon. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Pine Ridge Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Travis King and Rev. Kenny Weaver. Burial will be in the Whitmire Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be, Tim Brewington, Steve McLain, David Garland, Timothy Millwood, Roger Davis and Ronnie Garner. The following are asked to assemble at the church today at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Kendall Gilliam, Shane Brewington, Barak McLain and Gage Millwood. The family is at the home, 465 Eaves Road, Whitmire. Memorials may be made to Pine Ridge Baptist Church Building Fund, Highway 6104, Whitmire, S.C. 29178. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Azalee Porter

Azalee Porter, of 709 Rice Ave. Ext., Oakmont Nursing Home, died Oct. 24, 2002. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Carolina Mortuary. J.B. Smith Retired from Conso James Benjamin (J.B.) Smith, 73, of 2297 Brown's Creek Church Road, died Oct. 22, 2002, in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Smith was born in Union County on March 8, 1929, a son of the late Douglas and Joeella Lindsay Smith. He was retired from Conso Products Co. and attended Bethel Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Bessie Mae Austin and Shirley Thompson both of Union; two sons, James Jones and James Kershaw both of Union; three sisters, Mable Kershaw, Nannie E. Means and Lois Crawford all of Jonesville; and a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Bethel Baptist Church in the Kelton Community by Rev. James E. Tillotson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. to await the hour of service. Viewing and visitation will be Saturday from 11:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The family is at the home of his sister, Lois Crawford, 140 Early St., Jonesville. The Carolina Mortuary has charge of arrangements.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Renae and Tommy Adams, 537 Old Pump Station Road, Union. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.
