BUFFALO - Connie Edna Lawson Johnson, 88, of 202 Church St., Buffalo, widow of Ernell Johnson, died Dec. 25, 2002, at 10 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness. Mrs. Johnson was born in Union County on Nov. 7, 1914, a daughter of the late Riley and Mattie Whitehead Lawson.
She was a member of the Buffalo Baptist Church, a former Sunday School teacher, former Officer of the W.M.U., Group #3, a former member of the Senior Adult Choir and a member of the Ester Scarborough Sunday School Class. Mrs. Johnson was retired from United Merchants, Buffalo Plant. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
Surviving are four daughters, Avonell Zimmer-man, Joyce Ward Hall and Betty Joe Simmons all of Buffalo and Helen Kingsmore of Greenwood; two sons, Doug Johnson and Jimmy Johnson both of Buffalo; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Johnson was predeceased by a daughter, Hattie Jean Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Anderson, Rev. Johnny Burgess and Rev. Phillip Chandler. Burial will be in Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Ernell Johnson, Mack Johnson, Ken Ward, Joe Edwards, George Bryant and Johnny Fallaw.
The following are asked to assemble at the church Friday at 2:45 p.m. to form the honorary escort: Members of the Ester Scarborough Sunday School Class, Staff of Oakmont Nursing Home and Evelyn Lawson, John and Catherine Finch, Dianne Smith, Frances Lancaster, Ruth Gregory, Ruby Varner, Lucille Byars, Mildred Rogers, Linda Betenbaugh, Pauline Scott, Monk Gregory, and Becky and Hugh Sanders.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 and will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home of her son, Jimmy Johnson, 325 Riley Rd., Buffalo. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bessie T. Varner

Bessie (Mammie) Trammell Varner, 91, of Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road, widow of Ernest Varner, died at her home Dec. 25, 2002. Mrs. Varner was born in Swain County, N.C., on Jan. 11, 1911, a daughter of the late Kelly and Anna Morgan Trammell. She was a member of Ottaray Baptist Church and was formerly employed with Conso Products.
Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Janis V. and Fred West of Union; Brenda V. and Morris West of Pauline and Virginia V. and Tommy Cousino of Beach Island; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Varner was predeceased by a sister and a brother, Mary Sinclair and Frank Trammell. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Friday at Sardis United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Randy Smith.
Burial will be in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Keith Gault, Olin Sinclair, Larry Sinclair, Scotty Austin, Thomas Hancock and Dale Mitchell. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service.
The family is at the home, Apt. E-18, Brittany Manor, 296 Meansville Road. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Gene Edward Garner Sr., 74, of Sevierville, Tenn., husband of Mady Garner, died Monday, Dec. 22, 2003, at his home after a year-long battle with cancer. He was retired U. S. Navy and a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, USS Leyte (CV-32) Association, and the USS Greenwich Bay AVP 41 Association.
He was preceded in death by his son, Gene E. Garner Jr., parents, John R. and Gladys G. Garner and brother, C. Bruce Garner. Surviving in addition to his wife area son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Tina Conter of Fairfield, Ohio; two daughters, K.C. Conter of Sevierville and Gladys Prouty of Lynn, Mass.; grandchildren, Alex Conter of Fairfield, Ohio, Shawn, Shannon, and Tonya Prouty of Lynn Mass.; a brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Louise Garner of Union; a sister-in-law, Jewel Garner of Prosperity; aunts, Connie Garner and Vi O'Dell of Union; a sister-in-law and husband, Rhonda and Rick Wessels of Cincinnati, Ohio; three brother-in-laws and wives, Steve and Becky Miller of Ocklawaha, Fla., Stan and Cathy Miller of Madison, Ala., and Brian Rand of Florence, Ky.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Atchley Funeral Home with services conducted by Marc Conter and K.C. Conter. Interment will follow in Boyd's Creek Cemetery with military honors provided. The family will receive friends noon until 2 pm. Saturday at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville, Tenn.

Kathleen K. Quinn

Kathleen Trammell King Quinn, 82, of 3580 East Kesler Lane, Gilbert, Ariz., wife of Lee Quinn, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at 10 p.m. in Banner Hospice of Arizona after several years of declining health. Mrs. Quinn was first married to the late Lawrence Y. King. She was born in Union on May 1, 1921, a daughter of the late Gary and Mattie Davis Trammell. Mrs. Quinn was a Baptist.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two daughters, Donna Scarbrough of Gilbert, Ariz., and Connie Wilson of Union; three sisters, Janice Fowler and Joyce Palmer, both of Jonesville and Maggie Howell of Union; two brothers, Gary Trammell Jr. of Cross Anchor and Francis Trammell of Jonesville; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Quinn was predeceased by a daughter, Gloria Harris, a sister, Mary T. Brewington and two brothers, Thomas (Bud) Trammell and Richard Trammell.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Trinity Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Neil Kiesler and Ricky Wayne Harris. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Dennis Howell, Gerald Howell, Danny Howell, Terry Howell, James Ray (Curly) Harris and Lawrence Carl (Peanut) Harris.
After 5 p.m. today the body will be at the home of her daughter, Connie Wilson, 203 N. Boyce St., Union where the family will receive friends and will be placed in church at 2 p.m. Friday to await the hour of service. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Kathleen L. Pruitt

SPARTANBURG - Kathleen Lamb Pruitt, 91, of Park Place Assisted Living, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002 at her home.
A native of Union, she was the widow of Ray Cleveland Pruitt and was a daughter of the late Joseph Layton and Mary Ellen Lee Lamb. She was a longtime employee of the Carolina Cash Company, having retired in 1989. She was a member of Trinity Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Bobby M. Pruitt and his wife, Joyce D., of Spartanburg; two brothers, L. Wilson Lamb of Union and Ralph H. Lamb of Lake Bowen; three sisters, Carrie Lee L. Lancaster of Jonesville, Hazel L. Bennett of Spartanburg, and Ruth L. Gregory of Union; three grandsons, Robert M. Pruitt of Mt. Pleasant, R. Scott Pruitt of Spartanburg and Mark C. Pruitt of Greenville; a great-granddaughter, Emily K. Pruitt, and a great-grandson, R. Smith Pruitt, both of Mt. Pleasant. She was preceded in death by a brother, J. Harold Lamb and a sister, Willie Mae L. Lancaster.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Union Memorial Gardens conducted by the Rev. Dr. Paul Harmon.

Margaret B. Quinn

Margaret Bishop Quinn, 89, formerly of 211 North Mountain St., widow of Robert L. Quinn, died Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at 1:40 a.m. in Oakmont Nursing Home after an extended illness.
Mrs. Quinn was born in Union on Sept. 8, 1912, a daughter of the late Lawrence Gordon Bishop and Lula Sparks Bishop. She was a member of Lower Fairforest Baptist Church where she had served as church clerk. Mrs. Quinn was a graduate of Union High School and Robinson Business School and was retired from the Department of Agriculture, ASCS Office.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include a number of nieces and nephews. Nieces include Lucille Barnett of Greenville, Frances Gault, Betty Belue, Hazel Trent and June Smith, all of Union, Sara Lanford of Gramling, Delia Boatwright of Aiken, Anne Reynolds of Orangeburg, Jane Miller of Nova Sotoa, Texas; nephews include William F. "Billy" Bishop of Boiling Springs, Earl Bishop Jr. and Donald Hawkins, all of Union.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Jim Cunningham and Dr. Joseph W. Smith Jr. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Donald Hawkins, William F. "Billy" Bishop, Roger Bishop, Stephen Smith, James L. Smith and David Smith.
The family will receive friends at Lower Fairforest Baptist Church Thursday from 2-3 p.m. prior to the service.
The family is at the home of her niece, June Smith, 570 Police Club Road, Union.

Walter M. Conley
World War II veteran
Walter Martin Conley, 79, husband of Dorothy Cudd Conley of 287 Red Oak Road, Barnwell, former residents of Union, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 in Rembert after a sudden illness.
Mr. Conley was born in Gastonia, N.C., on July 19, 1922, a son of the late Walter D. and Alma Conley. He was a Baptist. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a farmer.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, Henry Davis Conley of Union and Charles Ray Conley of Clinton; two sisters, Valerie Garner of Union and Dorothy Conley of Columbia; a brother, Henry Arthur Conley of the Sedalia Community, Union; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Conley was predeceased by a daughter, Ann Conley Epps.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Barry Epps. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens with military honors.
Active pallbearers will be David Garner, Mark Sumner, Butch Lawson, Jonathan Sumner, Terry Samples, Larry Vaughn, Dennis Quinn Jr. and Vernal Stephenson.
The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9.
The family will be at their respective homes.

BATESBURG-LEESVILLE - Brig. Gen. Charles A. Miller Sr. of 292 Howard St., Batesburg-Leesville, died Feb. 27, 2002 at his home.
Born in Rock City Falls, N. Y., he was the son of the late William H. and Alice Cook Miller. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, Batesburg, the Lutheran Men, Rotary Club and the American Legion.

J.R. Bradburn

JONESVILLE - Edward Jack Rufus "J.R." Bradburn, 60, husband of Linda Green Bradburn of 217 Depot St., died Thursday night, Feb. 28, 2002 at his home after an extended illness.
Mr. Bradburn was born in Union on Feb. 11, 1942, a son of the late George and Oby Lee Davis Bradburn. He attended Oakbrook Community Church and was formerly employed with Felters Corporation in Gaffney.
Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Amanda Bradburn of the home; a son, Jason Bradburn of Pacolet; two sisters, Linda B. Horne of Union and Debbie B. McFalls of Shelby, N.C.; six brothers, Everette Bradburn of Jonesville, Donald Lee Bradburn and Frankie Bradburn, both of Shelby, N.C., Otis Bradburn, Donnie Bradburn and Marvin Bradburn, all of Union; a granddaughter, Abby Bradburn of Pacolet. Mr. Bradburn was predeceased by a son, Daniel Edward Bradburn; and a sister, Jenny B. Owens.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Oakbrook Community Church conducted by the Rev. Terry Candler. Burial will be in Jonesville Memorial Gardens.
After 1 p.m. Saturday the body will be at the home of his brother, Everette Bradburn, 225 Church St., Jonesville and will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday to await the hour of service.

Marie Ferrell Stone

NORTH AUGUSTA - Marie Ferrell Stone, 85, died Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002, in a local health care facility after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 2, 2002, at Waters-Powell Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Florence Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of David Long, 6411 Anderson Field Road, Effingham.
Mrs. Stone was born in Timmonsville, a daughter of the late Robert James and Mary Morris Ferrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur Claude Stone, and a daughter, Mary Ann Long.
Survivors include three daughters, Vernelle Gavalas of Union, Linda Baxley of North Augusta and Ruth Hill of Columbia; a brother, Lonnie Ferrell of Newark, Delaware; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
