GIDDENS, John
Entered into eternal rest on Friday, May 10, 2002, Mr. John (Jack) Drewry Giddens of Johns Island.
The relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral service Monday, May 13, 2002, in J. HENRY STUHR, INC., WEST ASHLEY CHAPEL (3360 Glenn McConnell Parkway) at 4 o'clock. Friends may call at Stuhr's West Ashley Chapel, Monday afternoon, from 2 o'clock until service.
Mr. Giddens was a U.S. Navy Veteran of W.W.II and Korea, he died on May 10, 2002, at home. He was born in Norfolk, Va., on the 8th day of January, 1924, the son of the late Monroe Carson Giddens and Beulah Bonner Giddens. Mr. Giddens enlisted in the USN in January 1941 and retired as a Chief Machinist Mate in 1961. He was a veteran of many Pacific campaigns while serving aboard the destroyer CONWAY in 1942-1943 and the aircraft carrier HANCOCK in 1944-1945. He saw action in the Western Pacific engagements of Guadalcanal, Marianas, and the Formosa Islands. He was awarded the Philippine Liberation Medal with two stars, World War II Victory Medal, and Korean Service Medal. Jack was an avid golfer and long-time member of Shadowmoss Country Club.
Mr. Giddens is survived by one son, Jack Giddens of Charleston, one daughter, Carolyn Grooms, of Charleston, two sisters, Kathryn Libby of Norfolk, Va., Lois Sweigart of Aston, Pa., two brothers, Donald Partin of Williamstown, N.J., Bob Partin of Ridley Park, Pa., two grandchildren, Julie Towles and Shana Caporossi, one great-grandchild Alex Blum. Mr. Giddens was predeceased by step-parents, Lloyd James Partin and Sadie B. Partin.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 267 Calhoun St., Charleston, S.C. 29401, and/or Hospice of Charleston, Inc., 3896 Leeds Ave., North Charleston, S.C.

FRITH, Maggie Lee
Entered into eternal rest on the afternoon of May 11, 2002, Maggie Lee Frith, retired Director of House Administration of M.U.S.C., residence Hollywood, S.C. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service, Monday, May 13, 2002, at 2 o'clock in West Ashley Church of God. Friends may call at West Ashley Church of God prior to service. Burial will be in Quaker Cemetery, Camden, S.C., Tuesday, May 14, 2002, at 11 o'clock.
Ms. Frith was born April 23, 1926, in Anderson, S.C., daughter of Brooks Robert and Betty Horne Frith. Ms. Frith was a member of West Ashley Church of God.
She is survived by her daughter, Mickie F. Short of Tega Cay, S.C., one brother, Roy Frith of Anaheim, Calif., two grandchildren, John C. Short, III, of Fort Mill, S.C., and Deidra S. Smith of Spartanburg, S.C., three great-grandchildren, John C. Short, IV, Kilaann Smith, and Amanda Lee Canterbury.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to West Ashley Church of God, 1560 Ashley River Road, Charleston, S.C. 29407.

Mrs. Powell is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Feances Nesbitt (Leroy), Mrs. Mary Louise Dolandson, Mrs. Jestine Bennett, Mrs. Yvonne Weston and Mrs. Anna Bell Williams. Five sons, Mr. Augusta Weston (Clara), Mr. Richard Mitchell (Doris), Mr. Herbert "Fred" Powell, Mr. James "Bob" Powell (Delores) and Mr. Lenarod Curtis Powell (Shirley), one step-son, Mr. Edward Powell, Jr. One sister, Mrs. Alma Manigault. Two brothers, Mr. Lenarod Mitchell and Mr. Arthur Lee Mitchell. Three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Powell, Mrs. Rebecca White (Rolland) and Evan, Carrie Jackson (Herbert), her brother-in-law, Mr. Bennie Powell. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Viewing for Mrs. Powell will be at the W. M. Smith-McNeal Funeral Home, 4129 Hwy. 17 North, Awendaw, S.C. JAYROE, Charles
GEORGETOWN - Charles Randolph "Randy" Jayroe, 40, died Thursday, May 9, 2002, at his residence.
Mr. Jayroe was born in Georgetown on June 27, 1961, a son of the late John Bernard Jayroe and Shelva Jean Simpson Jayroe. He graduated from Winway High School and managed a restaurant in North Myrtle Beach for a number of years. Mr. Jayroe was a medical technician with the Clarendon County Emergency Medical Service in Manning before moving back to Georgetown in 1996. He was a member of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church.
Surviving are two brothers, John B. Jayroe, Jr. of Georgetown and William G. Jayroe of Murrells Inlet, three nephews, William G. Jayroe, Jr., Troy N. Jayroe, and Joshua C. Jayroe; a niece, Shelva Monroe Goude; and a number of aunts and uncles.
Funeral services will be Monday morning, May 13, 2002, at 11 o'clock in Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Phillip C. Thrailkill and the Rev. Richard C. Jayroe. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery Annex under the direction of the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME.
The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home Sunday evening, May 12, 2002, from 6 until 8 o'clock.

BARNES, Mary Ann
GEORGETOWN - Mary Ann Bauer Barnes, 80, died Friday, May 10, 2002, in Trident Medical Center in Charleston.
Mrs. Barnes was born in Pittsburgh, Penn. on February 19, 1922, a daughter of the late Raymond Frank Bauer and Helen Catherine Schumberger Bauer. She moved to the Rhem's community of Georgetown County in 1943 and worked at the Sears Store in Georgetown for a number of years. Mrs. Barnes retired from Georgetown Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. Mrs. Barnes had lived with her son for the past year and a half. She was the widow of John Manley Barnes.
Surviving are a son, John R. Barnes and his wife Betty of Goose Creek; a brother, Raymond J. Bauer of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Helen M. Baltz of Florence, Ky.; a granddaughter, Yolanda Flynn of Goose Creek; and a great-grandson, Evan Price of Goose Creek.
The Funeral Mass will be Tuesday morning, May 14, 2002 at 10 o'clock in St. Mary Our Lady of Ransom Catholic Church. Officiating will be the Rev. Edward Fitzgerald. Burial will follow in Union United Methodist Cemetery in Georgetown Co.
A vigil service will be seven o'clock Monday evening, May 13, 2002, at the GEORGETOWN CHAPEL OF MAYER FUNERAL HOME followed by visitation until nine o'clock.

SHILLINGLAW, Philip
The relatives and friends of Dr. and Mrs. Philip O. Shillinglaw are invited to attend the graveside funeral service of the former at Rose Hill Cemetery, York, South Carolina. DIGGLE, Jr., Samuel
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Memorial Mass for Samuel Lewis Diggle, Jr., 91, formerly of 1136 Queens Rd., Charlotte, will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Final Commendation and Farewell Prayers will be Elmwood Memorial Gardens. DUNBAR FUNERAL HOME, DUTCH FORK CHAPEL, Irmo, S.C., is in charge. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Holy Angels Nursery, Belmont, N.C. or to St. Peter's Church Building Fund.
Mr. Diggle is survived by his sons: Samuel L. Diggle, III of Lake Murray, S.C. and Charles P. Diggle of Charleston, S.C. and Charles P. Diggle of Charleston, S.C.; sisters, Mrs. Louise Duncan of Largo, Fla. and Mrs. Loretto Lowry of Charlotte; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

WOOTEN, Pansy
Mrs. Pansy Dempsey Wooten, 56, of 4686 Browning Gate Rd. in Estill, died Friday at the Memorial Medical Center in Savannah, after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 25, 1946 in Hampton County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Dempsey and Thelma Freeman Dempsey. Mrs. Wooten was a former secretary at Patrick Henry Academy and was currently the accounting supervisor with Carsonite Industries. She had been very active with the Hampton County Relay for Life and was a member and Sunday School teacher at Nixville Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Edison Wooten of the home; one son, Michael Edison Wooten of Smyrna, Ga.; one daughter, Vicki W. Long of Marietta, Ga.; 2 brothers, Fred Dempsey of Burton, S.C. and Aaron Dempsey of Port Royal, S.C.; 2 sisters, Valorie Griner of Early Branch, S.C. and Nadine Linderman of Denver, N.C. There are 3 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Nixville Baptist Church with burial following in the Nixville Cemetery, directed by PEEPLES-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME of Hampton.
Friends may call at the chapel in Hampton from 6 until 8 p.m. on Saturday evening and Sunday morning prior to services.

MCCURDY, Catherine
The relatives and friends of Catherine Layton McCurdy who died April 27, 2002, are invited to attend her memorial service on Monday morning, May 13, at 11 o'clock. The service will be in St. Luke's Chapel on the grounds of MUSC, the corner of Ashley Avenue and Bee Street.

FULTZ, John
John Gordon (Creta) Fultz, 90, of Cross, a retired foreman and superintendent of iron construction, died Sunday at his residence.
The graveside funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday at Thornley Cemetery. Burial will be directed by RUSSELL FUNERAL CHAPEL, Moncks Corner.
Mr. Fultz was born May 12, 1912 at Berkeley County, S.C., a son of Lewis G. Fultz and Annie Haynes Fultz. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps Tech Sergeant veteran of World War II. He worked for the W.P.A. in a CC Camp. He was an avid bee keeper and a member of the Bee Keeper's Association. He was one of the Founding Fathers of the Cross Volunteer Fire Department. He was elected the first Mayor of Bonneau, S.C. He was a member of the International Brotherhood Association of Iron Workers. He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Edna Parker Fultz.
Surviving are his wife, Lynn Carter Fultz of Cross; two sons, John A. Magliola of Charleston; Robert G. Fultz of Cross; daughter, Edna M. Hood of Macedonia; stepdaughter, Connie Cales of Cross; two stepsons, David James Bazzle of Fort Hood, Texas; Christopher Bazzle of Cross; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren.

MACK, Mazalee

She was the widow of Mr. Clarence Mack, the loving mother of Mrs. Lillia Belle Manigault (Franklin), Mr. Elias Mack (Stella), Mr. Joseph Mack (Eartha), Ms. Susie Mack and the late Mr. Elijah Mack. The loving sister of Mr. Joseph Alston (Elouise) and Mrs. Pearl Hawkins (Herbert). She was the grandmother of five and great-grandmother of six.

SMITH, Jr., Robert
MURRELLS INLET - Robert Jackson Bates "Jack" Smith, Jr., age 60, of Huntington Marsh died May 12, 2002 at his residence.
Mr. Smith was born November 9, 1941 in Augusta, Ga. a son of the late Robert Jackson Bates and Mary Willis Smith.
He received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Georgia and began practicing law in Augusta in 1965, being admitted to practice before all Georgia courts and the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1969 he was appointed by President Richard Nixon to two terms as United States Attorney for Georgia's Southern District. He also served as U.S. Public Defender for four years and was currently serving as a U.S. Administrative Law Judge and had served as Chief Administrative Law Judge based in Charleston, S.C.
He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church of Myrtle Beach and the Beech Island Agricultural Club.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Hope Stalvey Smith, three sons, Robert Jackson Bates "Rob" Smith, III of Athens, Ga., Sam T.G. Smith of Augusta, Ga. and Gene Spivey of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters, Mary Willis Smith of Gainesville, Fla., Talley S. Richey of Charlotte, N.C. and Ginny S. Eagan of Augusta, Ga., 8 grandchildren, two brothers, Michael W. Smith of Richmond, Va., and Joseph E. Smith of Augusta, Ga.; three sisters, Ashley G. Wilson of Atlanta, Ga., Harriet S. Heineman of Roanoke, Va. and Susan O. Rashid of Estes, Neb.
Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 15, 2002 at Lakeside Cemetery with Rev. Mark Goodman and Rev. Harold Lewis officiating.
The family will receive friends at GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, BEACH CHAPEL, from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday.

WILLIAMS, Otis
FARIFAX - Mr. James Otis Williams, husband of Helen B. Williams, died Saturday in the Allendale County Hospital. He was 90.
Mr. Williams was born in Fairfax, July 7, 1911, a son of the late A.J. Williams, and Anna Harter Williams. He was a retired Sales Executive with SCE&G with over 48 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, and was a former president of the Columbia Country Club. He was also a member of the Lions Club, and The Rotary. Surviving, besides his wife of Fairfax are: 2 sons, Arthur Williams of Fairfax and James Williams, Jr. of Aiken, and one brother, H.J. Williams of Fairfax. There are 4 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Mr. Williams was pre-deceased by 1 son, Fred C. Williams, and one grandson, John Williams.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 11:00 in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Fairfax, with burial following in the Fairfax Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. SMITH-RHODEN FUNERAL HOME of Allendale is in charge of arrangements.
