WEST COLUMBIA A memorial service for Margaret Gregory Harvey, 73, formerly of Aiken will be held 3 p.m. Saturday at Mount Tabor Lutheran Church in West Columbia conducted by the Rev. Paul Aebischer, the Rev. Virginia (Ginny) Aebischer and the Rev. Jim Rivers, with Friendship Sunday School Class serving as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends in the church assembly hall immediately following the service.

A private graveside service will be held at Putman Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County. Mrs. Harvey, widow of Hilliard McKendrick (Buddy) Harvey Jr., died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004. Born in Union County, she was the youngest child of the late Curtis Franklin Gregory and Letha Kingsmore Gregory. She graduated from Union High School in 1947 and she and Buddy were married in 1949 and moved to Aiken in 1952. A 46-year active member of Millbrook Baptist Church, she was widowed in 1981 and moved to West Columbia in 1998.

Survivors include her eldest son, H. Gregory Harvey and his wife, Betty of Sumter; a daughter, Ruth Anne Lawson and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Lawson of Columbia and son, Glenn T. Harvey and his wife, Mary of James Island; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Godshall of Aiken; and nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Mount Tabor Lutheran Church, Capital Improvement Fund, 1000 B. Ave., West Columbia, S.C. 29169, or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C. 29210. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Irene Deal Rash
Springs Industries retiree

CHESTER Irene Deal Rash, 86, of 110 Brookwood St., Chester, widow of Ernie V. Rash, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2004, at Chester County Hospital. Mrs.Rash was born Jan. 27, 1918 in Cowpens, a daughter of the late Jim Deal and Hazel (Davis) Deal Cookson. She was retired from Springs Industries with 37 years service. Mrs. Rash attended Lockhart schools.

Surviving are four daughters, Carol Ivie, Linda Pressley, Frances Bianco and Gwen Rash, all of Chester; a son, Jimmy Rash of Chester; 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold (Bud) Cookson of Union; five sisters, Faye Miller, Betty Tice and Gayle Turner, all of Lockhart, Lavadar Gaston of Chester and Hazel Fowler of Jonesville.

Mrs. Rash was preceded in death by a son, John D. Rash, a sister Ruth Deal and two brothers, Talmadge Deal and James Deal. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Barron Funeral Chapel by the Rev. John Porter and the Rev. Melvin Pressley. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 tonight at Barron Funeral Home, Chester.

Memorials may be made to The First Church of the Nazarene, 182 Pinckney St., Chester, S.C. 29706. Barron Funeral Home, 133 Wylie St., Chester, has charge of arrangements.

Curtis C. Smith Sr.
Torrington Co. retiree

Curtis Cecil Smith Sr., 75, husband of Virginia Reid Smith of 726 North Duncan By-Pass died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Born in Union on Oct. 10, 1928, he was a son of the late Browning Smith and Lillian Smith Smith. He was a member of Westside Baptist Church. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army, and was retired from Torrington Co.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a daughter, Kathy Garrison of Woodruff; three sons and daughters-in-law, Reid and Judy Smith of Columbia, Curtis Smith II of Union and Maxie and Betty Smith of Union; a sister, Addie Mae Lawson of Buffalo; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the S. R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Jerry Lawson and the Rev. Barry Tucker.

Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Nephews will serve as active pallbearers. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 6:30 until 8:30. The family is at the home, 726 North Duncan By-Pass. Memorials may be made to a church of one's choice. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Dora F. Woods
Domestic worker

Dora Fleming Woods, 83, of White Oak Manor in Rock Hill died Tuesday, Feb, 10, 2004. She born Aug. 15, 1920 in Fairfield County, a daughter of the late George and Martha Koone Fleming. She was educated in the Union County Public School System and was a member of Corinth Baptist Church. She was a domestic worker in Baltimore, Md., and a resident of White Oak Manor Nursing Home for 25 years.

She is survived by a daughter, Freddie Russell Fleming of Union; a brother, Thomas A. Fleming of Union; six grandsons, Andrew Smith, Terry, Curtis, and Fredrick Fleming, all of Union, Ronnie Fleming of Jonesville and Shawn Fleming of Rock Hill; four granddaughters, Vandora Fleming and Wanda Taylor of Union, Sandra Macon of Columbia and Sheila Neal of Yamasse; 17 great grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul Baptist Church. Burial will be in St. Paul Society Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the residence of her daughter, Ms. Freddie Russell Fleming , 317 S. Mountain St. Gibson & Brown Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Bobby G. Leonhardt
Retired from Carlisle Finishing

Bobby Gene Leonhardt, 70, of 26 Mill St., Union, widower of Hazel Johnson Leonhardt, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at 6 p.m. in Spartanburg Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Leonhardt was born in Union Aug. 24, 1932; a son of the late H. Hayward and Allie Mae Lawson Leonhardt. He was a member of the Glory Baptist Church. Mr. Leonhardt was retired from the S.C. National Guard, Union Unit and from Cone Mills, Carlisle Finishing Plant.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Kim L. Brown of the home, Tammy L. and Tim Cooper of Greer and Tonya L. and Dewayne Evans of Dalton, Ga.; a sister, Mildred Hawkins of Union; a brother, James Frank Leonhardt of Union; four grandchildren, Leigh Anne Brown, Lee Cooper, Chuck Rogers and Stephanie Rogers; two great-grandchildren and a number of special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Welcome Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Robert Jarvis and the Rev. Christopher Carr. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be George (Puddin) Rumph, Mike Chastain, Scott Barnett, Travis Cooper, Lewis Horne and Stan Hawkins.

The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 and will be placed in the church at 1 pm. Saturday to await the hour of service. The family is at the home, 226 Mill St., Union. Memorials may be made to the Glory Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 178, Union, S.C. 29379. The S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Virginia D. Bailey
Retired from Torrington Co.

Virginia D. Bailey, 78, widow of Charles B. Bailey, formerly of 211 Walker Heights, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after several months of declining health. Mrs. Bailey was born in Pacolet, July 13, 1925, a daughter of the late Herbert and Ila Worthy Dupree. She was formerly employed with Milliken & Co., Monarch Plant, and was retired from Torrington Co. Mrs. Bailey was a graduate of Pacolet High School and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church.

Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Merrie Bailey of Union; two brothers, Fred Dupree of Norfolk, Va., and James Dupree of Jonesville. Mrs. Bailey was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Bailey and a sister, Louise Robinson. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sardis United Methodist Church Cemetery by the Rev. Boyd Williams. The family will receive friends immediately following the graveside service. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jonell Dobbins
CARLISLE

Jonell Dobbins of Carlisle died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital. Arrangements are incomplete and will be announced later by the Whitney Funeral Home.

Grace T. Jerdo
World War II veteran

Grace Ioline Thomas Jerdo, 79, widow of Raymond L. Jerdo of 1922 Whitmire Highway, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at Wallace Thomson Hospital after an extended illness. Mrs. Jerdo was born in Whitmire, July 27, 1924, a daughter of the late Algie Lee and Grace Ioline Austin Thomas. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II, having served as a corporal in the U.S. Army WAC.

Surviving are a son, Kevin Michael Jerdo of Herman, N.Y.; a grandson, Justin Jerdo also of New York; a sister, Nellie T. Richardson of Newberry; a sister-in-law, Ella J. Mero of New York; and a number of special nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Jerdo was predeceased by a brother, Algie Haskell Thomas. The family is at the home, 1922 Whitmire Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. At this time no services will be held.

Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 915 S. Pinckney St., Union, S.C. 29379; or to Hospice Care of S.C., 128 Medical Science Dr., Union, S.C. 29379; or to a charity of one's choice. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Michael C. Mobley
Union native

Michael Coleman Mobley, 51, husband of Brenda Young Mobley of 120 Sardis School House Road, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2004, at 1:52 p.m. in Wallace Thomson Hospital after a sudden illness. Mr. Mobley was born in Union on March 27, 1952, a son of Edith Gwendolyn Hurt Geiger of Columbia and the late William Coleman Mobley. he was a Baptist and a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.

Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are a son, Jason Coleman Mobley of the home; a sister, Debbie Mobley of Columbia; a brother, Jackie Mobley of Rock Hill; and a grandson, Brandon Jacob Mobley of New Jersey. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Chapel conducted by the Rev. Arthur Smith Sr. Burial will be in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers will be Brad Palmer, Cotton Robertson, Buddy Bright, Terry Young, Steve Hoffman and Johnny Adams. The body will remain at the funeral home where the family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9. The family is at the home, 120 Sardis School House Road. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Robert L. Owens
Fountain Inn native

GRAY COURT Robert Lewis (Buddy) Owens, 63, husband of Mildred Woods Owens, of 1356 Hellams Road, died Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at his home. He was born in Fountain Inn, the son of the late Thomas Arthur and Lola Baucham Owens. Mr. Owens was retired from Yellow Freight Trucking Co. and was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Ricky Lewis Owens of Gray Court; two daughters, Mildred Dianna Miller and Sheila Owens, both of Fountain Inn; six grandchildren, Christopher Miller, Melissa Miller, Trisha Tipton, Ricky Jay Owens, Ryan Lewis Owens and Jade Nikole Lukaszczyk; and a great grandson, Andrew Alan Roberts of Fountain Inn. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Laurens. Gray Funeral Home of Laurens has charge of arrangements.

Gayle C. Phillips
Retired from DSN board

Gayle Crawford Phillips, 64, widow of Harry Ray (Abie) Phillips, of 309 Catawba St., died at her home after a sudden illness. Mrs. Phillips was born in Union, June 19, 1939, a daughter of Lizzie Lawson Crawford of Union and the late James Otis Crawford. She was a graduate of Union High School, Class of 1958, and was retired from the Union County Disabilities and Special Needs Board. Mrs. Phillips was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she was a member of the Ladies Circle and the John Coward Sunday School Class. She was an active volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and the Union County Relay for Life.

Surviving in addition to her mother are two sons, David Ray Phillips of Union and Michael Wayne and his wife, Michele Phillips, of Greenville; two grandchildren, Casey Ryan Phillips and Reanna Starr Phillips; a number of aunts and one uncle. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today at Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Don Alexander. Burial was in Union Memorial Gardens.

Active pallbearers were Don Cody, Keith Davis, Randy Hanvey, Stacey Jones, Larry Lawson and Robbie Littlejohn. The following formed the honorary escort: Tom and Shirley Hamrick, Reese OĠDell, Polly Sherfield and Olin Lee; members of the Ladies 1, 2, and 3 Circle groups, members of the John Coward Sunday School Class of Beth United Methodist Church and co-workers of the Union County Disabilities and Special Needs Board.

The body remained at the funeral home where the family received friends Sunday night from 7 until 9 and was placed in the church at 10 this morning to await the hour of service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund or Church Van Fund, 1705 Lockhart Highway, Union, S.C. 29379. The family is at the home, 309 Catawba St. S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.

Jesse S. Gowan
Retired HVAC installer

GASTONIA, N.C. Jesse Stewart Gowan, 62, of 845 Vista Mountain Lane, died Saturday, Feb. 15, 2003, at his residence. He was a native of Spartanburg, a son of Johnnie Sue Smith Gowan of Jonesville and the late Stewart Richard Gowan. He was a retired heating and air conditioning installer. Mr. Gowan was a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church of Clover.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his wife, Margaret Wilson Gowan; a son, Michael Hyatt of Terrelton, Okla., four daughters, Mary Allen of Huntersville, N.C., Margaret D. McKenzie of Clover, Linda A. Lanier of China Grove, N.C. and Janice M. Pagoota of Mount Holly, N.C.; a brother, Bobby E. Gowan of Conyers, Ga.; two sisters, Judy Hatfield of Midland, Texas, and Kate Vaughn of Jonesville; 16 grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and a great great nephew.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Clover conducted by the Revs. Marvin Carson and Olin Giles. Interment will follow in Long Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas, N.C. The family will receive friends tonight from 7-9 at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Gaston County, P.O. Box 3984, Gastonia, N.C., 28053. Woodlawn Funeral Home of Mount Holly has charge of arrangements.

Henry A. Hawkins Jr., 68, formerly of 2nd St., Union, Ottaray Community, died Tuesday morning, Feb. 17, 2004, in Laurens County Hospital. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the S.R. Holcombe Funeral Home.
