WINNIE L. BRAND
TURBEVILLE — Winnie Lou Brand, 90, widow of Thad Brand, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born May 24, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Lula Wilson.
Survivors include three daughters, Commia Lee Honemond of Washington, D.C., Buenia Gray of Bowie, Md., and Lula Mae Rush of Maryland; 29 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; 38 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m Saturday at Union Hill Freewill Baptist Church, Turbeville, with Pastor Shelly Hickson officiating. Burial will be in Union Hill Cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:40 p.m. from 3394 American Ave., Turbeville.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

CLARENCE P. DEES
Clarence Pinckney Dees, 66, husband of Rosa Jackson Dees, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born June 12, 1936, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Eddie Bubba Dees Sr. and Lillie Frierson Dees. He attended Ebenezer School in Dalzell. He was employed at Plywood Mill and Hurst-Sexton Furniture Store until he retired due to health problems.
Survivors besides his wife include five children, Alana D. Gilliam of Hampton, Va., Darryl L. Dees of Sumter, Myra D. Helton of Kannapolis, N.C., Craig M. Dees of Troutman, N.C., and Gary L. Dees of Statesville, N.C.; six brothers, Louis Dees of New York, N.Y., Eddie Dees Jr. and J.B. Dees, both of Sumter, Boston Dees of Hampton, Roosevelt Dees of Piscataway, N.J., and Johnny Dees of Newark, N.J.; three sisters, Evelyn D. Burnett of Bronx, N.Y., Dianne D. Jefferson of Newark and Mary D. Dennis of New York, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Harry Dees.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with the Rev. Frank E. Williams Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ernest Jackson, the Rev. Julia Prince, Elder Willie Shannon and the Rev. Minnie Dennis. Burial will be in Ebenezer Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, Dalzell.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home, 407 Vining St.
The family will receive friends at the home.

JOHN E. EADY JR.
John E. Eady Jr., 86, husband of Mary Davis Eady, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
Born Nov. 25, 1916, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late John E. Eady Sr. and Rachel Sanders Eady. He attended Sumter County public schools. He was employed with the city of Sumter until his retirement.
Survivors include four sons, James Wesley Eady and his wife, Louise, and Harry Eady, both of Mayesville, Albertus Eady and his wife, Rebecca, and Buster Eady and his wife, Runette, both of Sumter; two daughters, Johnnie Eady McKenzie and her husband, Jones, of Spartanburg and Sue Eady of Sumter; three stepchildren, Mae Francis Commander and her husband, David, of Lynchburg, Walter T. Davis and his wife, Neola, of Mayesville, and Barbara J. Davis of Queens, N.Y.; 26 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Mayesville Community Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Granddaughters will serve as flower bearers.
The funeral procession will leave at 9 a.m. from 150 Bethune Drive, Mayesville.
The family will receive friends at 150 Bethune Drive, Mayesville.

FRANCES K. FELKEL
ORANGEBURG — Frances Kemmerlin Felkel, 86, widow of Leo Madison, died Thursday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Methodist Oaks after a brief illness.
Born in Calhoun County, she was a daughter of the late George David Kemmerlin and Emma Jane Parler Kemmerlin. She was a member of Jericho United Methodist Church and a former member of Jericho United Methodist Women. She was a housewife.
Survivors include three daughters, Sandra Mack and her husband, Smith, of Cordova, Bonnie Brown and her husband, the Rev. Larry, of Sumter, and DeeDee Biebighauser and her husband, Johnny, of Elloree; five grandchildren, Kevin Mack, Travis Brown, Madison Biebighauser, Angie Brown Watt, and John Watt; two brothers, Charlie Kemmerlin of Cameron and Rhett Kemmerlin of Augusta, Ga.; a sister, Helen Gaskins and her husband, Hugh, of North Charleston; and a great-grandson, Hunter Watt.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, George D. Kemmerlin Jr. and Rhett Kemmerlin; and a sister, Lois K. Felkel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jericho United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robin Griffin officiating, assisted by the Rev. Larry Brown. Burial will be in church cemetery.
Kevin Mack, Travis Brown, John Watt, Boyd Felkel, Dick Watkins, Dr. Richard Kemmerlin and Donald Shuler will serve as pallbearers.
Members of the Men’s Sunday School Class of the church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Visitation will held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

SAMUEL FLEMING
SCRANTON — Samuel “Dunk” Fleming, 87, widower of Francis Kelgo Fleming, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System in Florence.
Born Oct. 15, 1915, in New Zion, he was a son of the late Leonard Fleming and Mary Jane Evans Fleming. He attended Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of Howard Chapel AME Church and Trinity Baptist Church of Columbia. He was a retired exterminator.
Survivors include two special caretakers and nieces, Dorothy Fulmore and her husband, Walter, of Lake City and Earline McClary and her husband, Abraham, of Florence; a special caretaker and nephew, Earnest Fleming and his wife, Gwendolyn; and three additional nieces, Bertha Pendergrass of Thomasville, N.C., Majorie Burgess and her husband, John, of Kingstree, and Beulah Miller of New Zion.
Viewing will be held today at Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, 145 N. Church St., Lake City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Baptist Church, 2521 Richland St., Columbia, with the Rev. Thurmond Bowens Jr., pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jerome McCray. Burial will be in Howard Chapel AME Church, New Zion, cemetery.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.
Men of the church will serve as pallbearers.
Ladies of the church will serve as floral bearers.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece and nephew, Dorothy and Walter Fulmore, 1049 Beulah Road in the Beulah community of Lake City.

EVERETTE GEDDINGS
Everette Geddings, 69, husband of Betty Williams Geddings, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Dec. 18, 1933, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Myer and Annie Mae McLeod Geddings. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the state Forestry Commission. He was a member of Sumter Blue Masonic Lodge and a shriner. He was a member and deacon of Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two sons, E. Ray Geddings and his wife, Cindy, of Alcolu and Bryan L. Geddings and his fiancee, Amy M. Wright, of Portsmouth, Va.; three daughters, Sandra G. Purvis of Sumter, Gail West and her husband, Tommy, of Sumter, and Kathy G. Brewer and her husband, Stanley, of Sumter; two brothers, Ashley Geddings and Myer Geddings of Sumter; nine grandchildren, Heather Baker, Kimberly West, Erica Charles, Anthony R. Geddings, Shawn Geddings, Samantha Brewer, Ryan Brewer, Erin Brewer, Reed Brewer; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Baker, Payton Charles and Brice Charles.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Annette Geddings; a son, Gary Eugene Geddings; and 10 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Baptist Church with the Revs. Dennis Welch and G.W. Harrell officiating. Burial with full military honors will be held in the church cemetery.
Deacons of Bethel Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home.

MOTHER AGNES P. KEARSE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Mother Agnes Pinkney Kearse, 77, widow of Willie Kearse, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002.
Born Jan. 14, 1925, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Andrew and Maggie Bennett Pinkney Sr. She attended Sumter County public schools and received a bachelor of arts degree in education from Morris College.
Survivors include six sons, Furman Tucker of Sumter, Gregory, Kenneth, Patrick, Willie Jr., and Dennis Kearse, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; two daughters, Patricia Posch of Portland, Ore., and Maggie Kearse of Brooklyn. four sisters, Anna Protie, Doretha McGee, Patricia Connartia and Maggie Cooke; a mother-in-law, Ruby Kearse; 22 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Deniece Kearse; three brothers, Clifton, Andrew Jr., and Willie Pinkney; a sister, Icesifine Pinkney; and a brother-in-law, Art Kearse.
Funeral services will be held at noon today at Mt. Olive C.O.G.I.C., 277 Eldert St., Brooklyn, with Elder Margaret Heath officiating. Burial will be in Cypress Hills Cemetery.
Unity Funeral Chapel of Brooklyn is in charge of arrangements.

MARGURITE B. MICKENS
Margurite Brown Mickens, 89, widow of Tally Mickens, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Hopewell HealthCare.
Born Sept. 29, 1913, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Harry Brown and Lula Thompson Brown. She attended Sumter County public schools. She was trained as a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church, where she served until her health failed. She was employed as a secretary and bookkeeper at Community Hospital (Community Residential Care Facility). She was a volunteer worker for a number of years. She opened her home for a number of years to children and shared her knowledge by providing religious instruction.
Survivors include a daughter, Barbara J. Dupree of Sumter; a sister, Thelma B. Goodman of Lynchburg; a granddaughter, Sharon Levette Rodgers and her husband, Antonio, of Sumter; two great-grandchildren, Jasmine and Antonio Jr., both of Sumter; a sister-in-law, Margaret Muldrow Brown of Chicago; and a number of nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, Leroy, Cleveland, Harry Jr., Lewis and Rainey Brown.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Alistair McKay, C.SS.R., officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Barbara Dupree, 1042 Old Pocalla Road.

CHARLES A. SATTERFIELD
Charles A. Satterfield, 70, widower of Tonnie Mae Pringle, died Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born June 22, 1932, in Chicago, he was a son of the late Bruce Wade Satterfield and Mary Marcella Booker Satterfield. He attended Chicago public schools. He served in the United States Air Armed Forces, where he fought in the Korean War. After the military, he moved to New York City, where he was employed by the board of education.
Survivors include a loving friend, Wilhemenia Kinder of the home; three daughters, Shirley Slade, Doreen Williams and Sharon Jamison, all of Brooklyn, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wimpy Satterfield.
Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday at the funeral home with the Rev. James O. Robinson, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Florence National Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 11 a.m. from 420 Magnolia St.

ERNEST SPANN
Ernest Spann Sr., widower of Annie Tomlin Spann, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at his home, 872 Harvin St.
Born July 17, 1922, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Annie Spann Wright. He attended Sumter County public schools. In his youth he joined Mulberry Baptist Church, where he served on the trustee board. He retired after 38 years of service from the B.L. Montague Co.
Survivors include five sons, Rowland Symore and Ernest Spann, both of Sumter, Raymon Spann of Hephzibah, Ga., Tech. Sgt. Randolph Spann of Clovis, N.M., and Robert Spann of Kingsland, Ga.; eight daughters, Diane Tiller of the home, Virginia McGill, Calesia Spann, Loretta Spann, Ernestine Bell, Cheryl Williams, Sara Jane Spann, and Venessa Spann, all of Sumter; a brother, Earl Spann Wright; 29 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mulberry Baptist Church with the Rev. O.S. Scott, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Revs. James Blassingame and William Dukes. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from 874 S. Harvin St.

JAMES A. TREXLER
James Alfred Trexler, 72, husband of Hazelene E. Gibbons Trexler, died Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Irmo, he was a son of the late Marie Dominick and Alfred Monroe Trexler. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He retired with 38 years of service from General Telephone Co. as an outside plant superintendent. He held degrees with Central Carolina Technical College, the University of South Carolina Sumter and graduated from Manning High School, Class of 1949. He was a member of the American Legion, Woodmen of the World and the GTE retirement association. He attended Green Acres Assembly of God Church. He was a devoted husband and loving father. Survivors besides his wife of 48 years include two sons, James W. Trexler and his wife, Julie, of Horrell Hill and Terry A. Trexler of Sumter; a brother, Fred Monroe Trexler of Manning; and a grandson, James Trey Trexler.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Revs. Donnie Collins and Delbert Thigpen officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Cary Logan, Casey Logan, Brian McDonald, Marshall McDonald, Russell Trent Sparks and Fred M. Trexler will serve as pallbearers. Dr. Phil Brandt, Butch Harris, Kevin McKenzie and Robert Lee Moore will serve as honorary pallbearers.

DAVID D. WELCH
NEW ZION — David Dupree Welch, 66, husband of Laura Knowlton Welch, died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born March 29, 1936, in New Zion, he was a son of the late James Carson Welch and Mae Goodman Welch. He was a member of Turbeville First Baptist Church and the Woodmen of the World. He retired from Sumter Utilities Inc. as a line foreman.
Survivors besides his wife of New Zion include two sons, Dupree Randal Welch of Lake City and David Michael Welch of New Zion, a daughter, Laura Sandra Thompson of Loganville, Ga.; four brothers, Jackson Welch and Charles Welch of Sumter, Curtis Welch of New Zion and Wayne Welch of Marion; six sisters, Willie Mae Thames and Mary Welch of New Zion, Annie Rae DuBose and Lois Ann DuBose Turbeville, Doris Altman of Timmonsville, and Carolyn McGee of Sardis; and eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Carson Welch Jr. and Bonnie Welch.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Turbeville First Baptist Church with the Revs. Bert Petty and Richard Hudson officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Van Fund of Turbeville First Baptist Church. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.
