LILLIAN GRIFFIN
Lillian Griffin, 56, died Feb. 25, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 1, 1947, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she was a daughter of Mary Evelyn Brooks and stepdaughter of Leslie Brooks of Sumter. She was educated in the public schools of New York and graduated from Brooklyn High School. After graduating, she was employed at the Brooklyn Naval Base and later accepted a position with the Corps of Engineers. Later she relocated to Chicago and was employed by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. In 1996, after her retirement from HUD, she moved to Sumter where she worked as a librarian at the Sumter County Library.
Survivors include a stepbrother, Wade Brooks of Rochester, N.Y.; an aunt, Elsie Brooks of Chester, Pa.; a special friend, Belinda Martin of Atlanta; and a host of cousins and loving friends.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter, with the Rev. Willie Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The funeral procession will leave at 10 a.m. from 549 S. Sumter St., Sumter.
The family will receive friends at 549 S. Sumter St., Sumter.
Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

MILDRED PRINGLE
LANE — Mrs. Mildred Elizabeth Kennedy Pringle, widow of Samuel Mayes Pringle Sr., died Sunday, March 2, at her residence.
Mrs. Pringle was born April 21, 1912, in Alcolu and was a daughter of the late Mark Calvus and Lillie Betts Player Kennedy.
Mr. and Mrs. Pringle were married on December 11, 1930, in Manning, and were longtime residents of Sumter.
They were former members of First Presbyterian Church of Sumter, where she taught Sunday school and was a member of Evenings Ladies Circle. She retired as a dental hygienist for Dr. Charles Penny. Mrs. Pringle was a member of Union Presbyterian Church in Salters.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Pringle was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a sister, Mrs. Lessie Kennedy Daniels.
Survivors include her sons, Samuel Mayes Pringle and his wife, Brenda, of Surfside Beach, and Charles Gary Pringle and his wife, Dolores, of Myrtle Beach; seven grandchildren, Cassandra Smith and Lisa Smith, both of Florence, Debra Brown of Clearwater, Fla., Boyd Pringle of Raleigh, N.C., Alex Pringle of Greenville, Betsy Pringle of Mount Pleasant, and Maxx Pringle of Clemson University and Myrtle Beach, five great-grandchildren, Kerri and Winn Smith, Merritt and Marley Smith, Lillian Pringle; a sister, Mrs. Eloise Kennedy Davis of Sumter and a number of nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel in Kingstree with committal services at 3:30 p.m. at Concord Presbyterian churchyard on Brewington Road in Sumter.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 today at the funeral home and other times at their homes.
Memorials can be made to Union Presbyterian Church or to Tidelands Hospice.
Williamsburg Funeral Home of Kingstree is in charge of funeral arrangements.

LT. COL. JOHN A. SCRANTON
COLUMBIA — The funeral for Lt. Col. John A. Scranton of Columbia who died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, was held Sunday at Greenlawn Funeral Home.
Dr. Noble Miller officiated.
Interment with full military honors was at Greenlawn Memorial Park.
Memorials can be made to The Gideons International, Columbia East Camp, P.O. Box 223, Columbia, SC 29224.
Greenlawn Funeral Home was in charge of funeral arrangements.
Lt. Col. Scranton was a member of Southside Baptist Church. He retired from the U.S. Army, where he served during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He also retired from Stier Supply, where he was the general manager for several years.
Surviving is one brother-in-law, William T. Beckham of Columbia, five nieces, Dona McCall Shaw, Jana McCall Ray, Gena McCall Ridings, Caryn McCall Joyce and Tina Beckham Brown, all of Atlanta; two nephews, Bates T. Beckham of Atlanta and Barton L. Beckham of Columbia; a number of grand and great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Beckham Scranton.

JEROME BRUNSON
Jerome H. “Sonny” Brunson, husband of Ann E. Brunson, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was 50.
He was born June 22, 1952, in Sumter County, and was a son of the late Ive Brunson Sr. and Elise Nelson Brunson.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother, Ive Brunson Jr. of 281 Gamble St.
Funeral services will be announced by Sumter Funeral Home Inc.

CARLYNN E. HOWETH
OWASSO, Okla. — Carlynn Eloise Howeth, local resident of Cheyenne, Wyo., lost her courageous fight with cancer Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at the Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa, Okla., at the age of 75 years.
She was born July 12, 1927, in Wichita, Kan., to Henry Carl and Glyndon Eloise (Winkler ) Janzen. She spent most of her life in Oklahoma. She was reared and educated in Sulphur, Okla., and was a graduate of Sulphur High School. She was married Oct. 29, 1943, at Ardmore, Okla., to Lesslie Howeth. They had made their home in Tonkawa, Okla., from 1960 through 1974. She had worked as a legal secretary at Conoco Oil Co. in Ponca City, Okla., until 1975. In 1977, she and Lesslie moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. She retired from the State of Wyoming Department of Education where she had been secretary to the director of education.
She was a member of the Happy Jack Baptist Church, Polka Lovers Club of America, Golden Spike Women’s Riding Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Lesslie’s U.S. Army 11th Armored Co. B, 55th Battalion Reunion Group.
Eloise loved life and was passionate about her love of animals and the outdoors. She loved horses and enjoyed camping and trail riding in the mountains. She enjoyed driving her buggy horse “Daisy” with her dogs always by her side. She was a person who treated friends as family. She was very artistic and spent many hours painting and doing needlepoint. She also enjoyed sewing for her family. She had an appreciation for music and enjoyed dancing. She continued to advance her education by reading and completing college classes. She will continue to be an inspiration of strength and courage to all who knew her.
Loving family members include two sons and daughters-in-law, Lesslie Lynn and Sandra Howeth of Sumter, S.C., and Roy and Debbie Howeth of Owasso, Okla.; three grandchildren, Amber Howeth of Sperry, Okla., Greg Howeth and his wife, Dana, of Lahaina, Hawaii, and Shari McAleavy and her husband, Billy, of Sumter, S.C.; six great-grandchildren, Colton, Brianna, Abbigail, Kassidy, Marcus and Austin; a special niece, Letha Stanford and her sons, Lesslie and Cameron; and a host of extended relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lesslie Howeth; and a sister, Elayne Mackey.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2003, at the First Free Will Baptist Church in Sulphur, Okla. Serving as officiating minister will be the Rev. Brad Ransom.
Serving as honorary casket bearers will be Johnnie Currie, George McAfee Jr., Jim Beckdolt, Tom Schick, John Williams, Argle Howeth and Rudie Janzen. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation or the local Animal Humane Society.
Arrangements and services were entrusted to Mowery Funeral Service in Owasso, Okla.

ROBERT L. PRYOR
MANNING — Robert LaCoste Pryor, 72, husband of Patricia Shealy Pryor, died Monday, March 3, 2003, in Manning.
Born Sept. 7, 1930, in Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a son of the late Raymond H. and Polly Thomas Pryor. He was a graduate of the University of Kentucky, a U.S. Air Force technical sergeant and veteran of the Korean War, was of the Presbyterian faith, and was a retired data processor for PYA Monarch.
Surviving besides his wife of Manning are a son, Greg Pryor of Walterboro; a daughter, Michelle Feeley of Sumter; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 3 p.m. today in Florence National Cemetery with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating.
Memorials may be made to Westside Baptist Church, 554 Pinewood Road, Sumter, SC 29154.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

JACKSON W. McELVEEN III
Jackson Wally McElveen III, 59, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at his home.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Jackson Wally McElveen and the late Adele Sports McElveen.
Mr. McElveen was a meat cutter with Winn-Dixie and a U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are a friend, Helen McLeod; three sons, Bobby McElveen, David McElveen and Michael McElveen; two daughters, Wanda Sue McElveen and Crystal McElveen, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Donald A. McElveen; two sisters, Pamela McElveen Coker and Shirley Mitchum, all of Sumter; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday in the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Calvin Nesbitt and James McElveen officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 381 Mooneyham Road.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

LELIA L. COOK
COLUMBIA — Lelia Lewis Cook, wife of the late Soloman Cook, died March 3, 2003, at the Heartland of Lexington Nursing Facility in West Columbia.
She was a daughter of the late William and Sytria Harvin Lewis.
The family will receive friends at the home of Virginia Butler at 214 Weatherly Road, Sumter.
Services will be announced by the staff of James Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

PATRICIA COOK
COLUMBIA — A memorial service for Patricia Warmoth Cook, 65, will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday at Bethel United Methodist Church with visitation at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, today from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Camp Burnt Gin at P.O. Box 101106, Columbia, SC 29211.
Patsy Cook died March 2, 2003. Born Sept. 22, 1937, in Chester, she was the daughter of Edward Louis and Margaret James Warmoth of Sumter. A 1955 graduate of Edmunds High School in Sumter, Mrs. Cook earned an associates degree in secretarial science from the University of South Carolina in 1957, after which she worked for the USC School of Journalism and for the South Carolina Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services. She later returned to USC and earned a B.A. degree in education in 1970 and a master’s degree in education in 1974. Mrs. Cook retired from Richland County School District One after 33 years as a special education teacher for students with orthopedic disabilities. Much loved by her students and their parents, she was a dedicated teacher and advocate for the rights of the disabled, always giving selflessly of her time and talent to be of service. Her commitment to the education of special needs students began before public law provided mandates, teaching first at Logan Elementary, Withers School, Brockman Elementary, and later becoming an itinerant teacher for Richland One students with orthopedic disabilities. Her love of teaching and of her students went beyond the classroom walls as she accompanied students on many field trips, including one to Washington, D.C. She developed the first Transition Notebook for use by Special Education teachers in the district, and in 1996 her peers elected her Itinerant Teacher of the Year. After retirement, she continued to work part-time until students on her caseload graduated. In a letter to Mrs. Cook, the parent of a student with whom she had worked for 12 years wrote: “You have a gift as a teacher and your own energy, optimism, and caring make you one of a kind.”
Mrs. Cook was a gracious and lovely lady. She earned many titles for her beauty and charm including being crowned Miss Sumter in 1957 and Miss Columbia in 1958. She participated in the Miss South Carolina pageant twice and was a finalist in 1958. She captured the heart of Tom Cook, originally of Greer, with whom she shared a loving 43-year marriage. She was a devoted mother, adoring grandmother, and true friend to many. She had numerous talents, including painting, and enjoyed gardening, decorating, and spending time at her summer home at Folly Beach.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas T. Cook of Columbia; daughter, Wrenn Cook and husband, Kevin Barber, of Columbia; son, Thomas T. Cook Jr. of Columbia; parents, Louis and Margaret Warmoth of Sumter; brother, Louis Warmoth of James Island; sister, Meg Warmoth Player and husband, Tommy, of Sumter; brother, Frank Warmoth and wife, Zoe, of Kansas City, Mo.; granddaughter, Corinne Cook Barber of Columbia; and a host of beloved relatives and friends.

ODELL BURGESS
We regret to announce the passing of Odell Burgess, age 59, who died on March 3, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
He was the son of the late Jerry Burgess and the late Katherine Petterson Burgess.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Mr. and Mrs. Edgar and Wallace B. Laws, 1533 Vista Lane, Lynchburg.
Services will be announced later by Commercial Funeral Home of Lynchburg.

POYTRESS WALKER
Poytress Walker, age 46, died on Wednesday, March 5, 2003, at the Lexington Medical Center in Columbia.
She was born in Florence, a daughter of Algie D. Walker and Elizabeth Jane Regan Walker. She was a registered intensive care unit nurse at the Lexington Medical Center for 20 years. She was a member of Supporting Sisters and was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving in addition to her parents are two brothers, Michael D. Walker of Florence and Lee Miller of San Diego; six sisters, Ann McArthur of Wolverine Lake, Mich., Sarah Wilson of Greenville, Rebecca Orr of Greenville, Debra Walker Holbert of Charleston, Melissa W. Kaiser of Gilbert and Jocelyn Walker of Summerville.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Miller.
Memorial services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Summerton Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Garland Hart officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Lexington Medical Foundation/Supporting Sisters, 2720 Sunset Boulevard, W. Columbia, SC 29169.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

ROBERT W. LUCK
Robert Whitesel Luck, age 79, died on Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at the Dorn Veteran’s Medical Center in Columbia.
He was born in Montvale, Va., a son of the late William Edward Luck and Lucie Whitsel Luck. He retired as a staff sergeant from the U.S. Air Force with 23 years of service and served during World War II, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.
He later retired from Pony Express. He was a member of Hickory Road Baptist Church of Sumter.
Surviving are one daughter, Kelly L. Dunson of Sumter; one brother, Davis Luck of Lakeland, Fla.; one sister, Lucie Hasselvander of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandchildren, Max Dunson and Matthew Dunson; and one great-grandchild, Kody Dunson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and one sister.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Ridge Dale Cemetery in Richvalley, Va. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bullock Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Veterans Trust Fund of South Carolina, 1205 Pendleton St., Suite 477, Columbia, SC 29210.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

JENERETTE L. DICKEY
READING, Pa. — Jenerette Levant Dickey, 53, husband of Betty Burgess Dickey, died Tuesday, March 4, 2003, at St. Josephs Hospital, Reading.
Born Feb. 14, 1950, in New Zion, S.C., he was a son of Josephine Baker Dickey McCray and the late Hazel Dickey and stepson of the late Willie “Son” McCray.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 1531 Little Star Road, Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

LELIA L. COOK
Lelia Lewis Cook, daughter of the late William Lewis and Sytria Harvin Lewis, died on Monday, March 3, 2003, at the Heartland Nursing Home of Lexington, W. Columbia.
She was born in Sumter on Dec. 29, 1912. She attended the public schools of Sumter and was a graduate of the Lincoln High School. After graduation, she relocated in New York City, where she met and married Solomon Cook. Lelia Cook was a member of Metropolitan AME Church in New York. After many years, she relocated to Sumter and became a member of the Union Station AME Church.
Lelia’s survivors include five grandchildren; 10 great-grands; a niece, Carol Lewis; a nephew, Lowell Lewis of New York; a sister-in-law, Hattie Lewis of Sumter; a close special family member, Virginia Butler of the home; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at the Union Station AME Church with the pastor, the Rev. Friendly Gadson, officiating. Interment will follow in the Bethel Community Cemetery.
James Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
The family will receive friends at the home of Virginia Butler, 214 Weatherly Road, Sumter.
