WINONA B. FISHER-BUGG
Winona B. Fisher-Bugg, 82, died Friday, March 7, 2003.
She was first married to Arnold Fisher and later to Bernard Bugg.
She was born in Peterborough, N.Y., the daughter of the late Asa Lee and Ora Gertrude Black Browder. She graduated from Cornell University and received a master’s degree from University of Illinois at Carbondale. She served as the dietician at Tuomey Regional Medical Center and, upon her retirement, became an active volunteer. She was an active member and volunteer of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was past president of FoHoLo at Trinity as well as a member of the Church Circle. She was an active member of the YMCA and the Alzheimer’s Support Group.
Surviving is a brother, C. Emerson Brower of Mt. Vernon, Ohio; two daughters, Daphne Fisher Beardsley and husband, David, of Mt. Airy, Md., and Denise Fisher Pruden and husband, Mickel, of Woodland, N.C.; and five grandchildren.
One brother and one sister preceded her in death.
Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity United Methodist Church with Dr. Bob Stillwell officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Winona B. Bugg Educational Fund c/o Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, SC 29150.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

W. ONEIL BOCHETTE
W. Oneil Bochette, 68, husband of Johnnie Faye Baggett Bochette, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County, he was the son of the late Wilbur E. and Jessie Dixon Bochette.
He was a retired U.S. Air Force staff sergeant with 20 years of service, one of which was in Vietnam. He later retired from Sumter County Public Works with 19 years of service. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Aiken. He was an avid fisherman.
He was twice married, first to the late Annie M. McIntosh Bochette.
Surviving are his wife of Sumter, two sons, Kenneth R. Bochette and wife, Lois Ann, of Sumter and Billy E. Bochette and wife, Liz, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; two stepsons, David El Wood and wife, Janice, of Aiken and William “Eddie” Campbell and his wife, Rose, of Sumter; two sisters, Sadie Woodruff of Graham, N.C., and Brenda Nunn and husband, Dean, of Aiken; two brothers, Thomas E. Bochette and wife, Dee, and Laverne Bochette and wife, Linda, all of Sumter; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A brother, Lewis Edward Bochette, preceded him in death.
Funeral serviced will be held 10 a.m. today in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Rev. Tommy Atkinson and Rev. Roy Bowman officiating.
Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the cemetery of Central Baptist Church in Aiken with military honors.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home and will receive friends other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

THELMA G. DUBOSE
MANNING — Thelma Gamble DuBose, 81, widow of Marion Epps “Junior” DuBose Jr., died Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Greenville Memorial Hospital.
Born Jan. 31, 1922, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late James Edward Gamble Jr., and the late Maude Weatherford Gamble. She was a member of New Covenant Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Mora DuBose Vernon and husband, Rev. Douglas Vernon, of Greenville; a brother, James E. “Pie” Gamble Jr. of Manning; two sisters, Louise Thompson and twin sister, Wilma Odom, both of Manning; five grandchildren, Matt Vernon, Ashley Vernon and Davidson Vernon, Marion Epps DuBose IV and wife, Ashley Jones DuBose, and Michael Cothran.
A son, M. E. DuBose III, preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in New Covenant Presbyterian Church. The Revs. Charlie Tyler and Lee Davis will officiate. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery. Nephews will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2185 Greeleyville Highway, Manning.
Memorials may be made to New Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2833 Alex Harvin Highway, Manning, SC 29102.

ROBERT “BOOKIE” JAMES BROGDON
Robert “Bookie” James Brogdon, 49, husband of Shirley Rich Brogdon, died Thursday, March 6, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born Dec. 1, 1953, in Turbeville, he was the son of Ozella Burgess and the late California McFadden. He was adopted and reared by Oree Willard Brogdon and the late evangelist Fannie Brogdon. He received formal education at St. John Elementary School in Lynchburg and was a graduate of Mayewood High School Class of 1971. He also graduated from the Florence-Darlington Technical College truck-driving program. He joined Oak Grove AME Church at an early age.
Survivors besides his wife and parents are six sons, Tyrone Rich, Freddrick Rich, Levi Rich, Antwane Brogdon, Desmond Brown of the home and Reginald McEleveen of Sumter; three daughters, Jennifer Rich of the home, Shontae Brown and Abigail Brown, both of Charlotte, N.C.; Five brothers, John Capers and wife, Martha, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Sean Brogdon and Jamie Brogdon, both of Florence, Corey Cooper of Olanta and Tyrone Brogdon of Atlanta; four sisters, Barbara Simmons and Jackie Brand, both of Olanta, Helen Burgess of Patterson, N.J., and Dorothy Roberts of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
A son, Robert Danille Brogdon, preceded him in death.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Tuesday and a funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at Oak Grove AME Church in Turbeville. Rev. Oliver Davis, pastor, will officiate, assisted by Rev. Wyman McFadden.
Burial will follow at St. Mart AME Church cemetery in Olanta.
Pallbearers will be men of the church and friends of the family. Floral bearers will be ladies of the church and friends of the family.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 1152 Cale Yarborough Road, Timmonsville.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

LEROY JOHNSON
REMBERT — Leroy Johnson, 76, widower of Rozella Bennett Johnson, died March 8, 2003, at his residence, 4500 Dawson Road.
Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Savannah, Ga., he was a son of the late Rev. J.M. Milton and Lubella Johnson and was raised by Ella Gibson. He was educated in the public schools of Savannah, Ga. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard while stationed in Savannah on the USS Richardson. He was employed with Container Inc. for 23 years and later with Sumter Career Center and Reagen Green Acres. He was a faithful member of Joshua Baptist Church, where he served as a member of the senior choir and trustee board. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge while living in Philadelphia.
Survivors include three sons, Melbern D. Johnson of Long Island, N.Y., Alix R. Johnson of Rembert and Eric M. Johnson of Sumter; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one grand-aunt, Annie Grubbs.
The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday from the Joshua Baptist Church, Live Oak Road, Dalzell, with the Rev. Eugene Dennis, pastor, and the Rev. Roosevelt L. Williams officiating. Burial will be in Joshua Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, Dalzell.
Pallbearers will be trustees.
Floral bearers will be missionary and trustee wives.
The funeral procession will leave at 10:30 a.m. from the home, 4500 Dawson Road, Rembert.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Eric Johnson, 2834 September Drive, Sumter, and his home, 4500 Dawson Road, Rembert.

A. OLIVER BRYANT Sr.
MANNING — Allen Oliver Bryant Sr., 76, husband of Ruby Barwick Bryant, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, in Summerton.
Born Oct. 26, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late J.E. and Edith Ridgeway Bryant. He was a retired equipment operator for Richland County Public Works, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, and a member of Little Star Pentecostal Holiness Church.
Surviving besides his wife are five daughters, Elaine Strassburg Hodge of Little River, Glenda B. Guillotte and June Strickland of Sumter, Donna Nesbitt and Leila Bryant of Columbia; three sons, Norris Bryant and Wayne Bryant of Manning, and Daniel Bryant of Columbia; five sisters, Rosalie Burke and Mary Edith Hill of Sumter, Ruby DuBose of Pinewood, Betty Wallace of Georgetown and Raye Wallace of Alcolu; 17 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Allen Oliver Bryant Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Mark Evans and the Rev. Morris Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in June Burn Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of Norris Bryant, 6360 June Burn Road, Manning.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, S.C. Office, P.O. Box 23128, Columbia, SC 29224-3128.

MARTHA W. KNOX
FREEPORT, N.Y. — Martha Watson Knox, 80, widow of Quincy Knox, died March 9, 2003, at Town House Extended Care Center, Uniondale, N.Y.
Born Dec. 9, 1922, in Loris, Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Rosetta Floyd Watson.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

DAVID MULDROW
David Muldrow, 92, husband of Dorothy Brown Muldrow, died March 3, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Nov. 5, 1910, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Thomas and Lena Weston. Mr. Muldrow was an active member of the Quinn Chapel AME Church early in his life. He later attended the Bethel AME Church, where he was an active member of the choir, prayer leader, founder and teacher of the church Bible study until he moved to York, Pa. In the 1930s he moved to Elizabeth, N.J., and attended Clinton Memorial AME Zion Church, where he was a Sunday school teacher, choir member and a deacon. In Elizabeth he was employed for more than 47 years by the Charles Schaffer Chemical and Salt Co. After his retirement in 1984, he returned to the Sumter community, where he enjoyed walking and exercising.
Survivors include three sons, David Muldrow Jr. and Eric Lamont Muldrow, both of Las Vegas, and Christopher Muldrow of Sumter; a daughter, Michele Muldrow of San Diego; a brother, Joseph W. Muldrow; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Angela Muldrow Whitley; four sisters, Lottie Shaw, Carola Gary, Lucille Baker and Maybel Guillard; and seven brothers, Charles, Richard, James, Thomas, Hazel, John and Luther.
Funeral services will be held at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter, Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Whitherspoon officiating. Burial will be in White’s Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from 407 Dogwood Drive, Sumter.
The family will receive friends at 407 Dogwood Drive, Sumter.

MARK A. LONG
DILLON — Mark Anthony “Tony” Long, age 45, beloved husband of Kathy Northrup Long, died Saturday, March 08, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Tony was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., a son of John S. and Tommye S. Long. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Dillon where he was a member of the adult choir, member of the “Fishers of Christ” Sunday school class and a Sunday school teacher for the fifth- and sixth-grade boys. He was an assistant manager with World Finance in Dillon. Tony was an avid softball player, former coach and umpire for city and church softball leagues both in Dillon and in Sumter. He was a Class of 1975 graduate of Sumter High School. He was a beloved husband, father, son, brother and friend.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Dillon and his parents of Sumter are two daughters, Bethany Joy Long and Maryn Taylor Long, both of Sumter; one brother, Rodney D. Long and his wife, Wanda, of Sumter; and one sister, Trina L. Mask and husband, Dan, of Pinewood.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Dillon. The Rev. Jeff Hickman and the Rev. Kevin Howell officiated.
The family received friends from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church prior to the service.
A graveside service was held at 4 p.m. Monday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Sumter. The Rev. Jeff Hickman and the Rev. Kevin Howell officiated.
The family received friends at 3 p.m. Monday at Bullock Funeral Home prior to the service.
Pallbearers were Mickey Fore, Wayne Miller, Gene Hill, Greg Rogers, Gary Rogers, Dallas Jordan and Terry Webster.
Honorary pallbearers were the Fishers of Christ Sunday School Class, the adult choir, Archie Coker, Ronnie Howell and Jackie Watts.
Memorials may be sent to the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Family Life Center Building Fund, 405 Mr. Calvary Road, Dillon, SC 29536.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter to handle the arrangements.

ALICE DURANT
SUMMERTON — Alice “Coote” Durant, 56, died at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning, on Monday, March 10, 2003.
Born in Clarendon County, Dec. 26, 1947, she was a daughter of the late Lillie Rhames Lang and Jenkins Lang.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Julia Lang, No. 5 Third St., Summerton.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

JOE AVANT Jr.
MANNING — Joe “Bug” Avant Jr., 55, died March 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born Aug. 31, 1947, in Lanes, Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Joe Avant Sr. and Elizabeth Harris Avant.
The family will receive friends at his residence, 116 Fulton St., Manning.

WILLIAM MONTGOMERY
William “Tapa” Montgomery, 61, husband of Lelia Singleton Montgomery, died March 9, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Eugene and Lamb Budden Montgomery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Earline Jones, 917 Jenson Road, Sumter, SC 29154.
