ALBERT YATES
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Albert Yates, 62, husband of Evelina Green Yates, died March 4, 2003.
Born Aug. 29, 1940, in Sumter County, he was a son of Fred Dow and Susan Yates.
The family will receive friends at the home of Colclough Jackson, 39A Cannery Road, Dalzell.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

PINKIE L. KILGO
Pinkie L. Kilgo, 100, widow of John H. Kilgo, died March 11, 2003, at Mariner Health, East.
Born Nov. 18, 1902, in Martin, she was a daughter of the late Moses and Josephine Lovett Dunbar.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Audrey Skeens, 208 S. Washington St., Sumter, SC 29150.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

JOHN RHAMES
SUMMERTON — John Rhames, 55, of First Street, Summerton, died at his residence Tuesday morning, March 11, 2003.
Born in the Summerton community of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Maybell Merchant Rhames and Lindberg Rhames.
The family will receive friends at the residence of his sister, Annie Fay Stukes, 3311 Lincoln St., Summerton.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

MABEL L. ENGLISH
MANNING — Mabel Landreth English, 90, widow of Andrew C. English Sr., died Monday, March 10, 2003, in Covenant Place in Sumter.
Born Oct. 21, 1912, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., she was a daughter of the late William O. and Rosa Fann Landreth. She was retired head housekeeper at Clarendon Memorial Hospital and a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, A.C. English Jr., and wife, Ann, of Manning; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sons-in-law, John W. Davis of Baton Rouge, La., and Ret. Col. John G. Gergulis of Brandon, Fla. She was preceded in death by a son, Kenneth Paul English; and two daughters, Carolyn English Davis and Helen English Gergulis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Stephen Bowe and the Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Manning Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Robertson, Harold Furse, Doug Mouzon, Reuben Hardy, J.D. Duke and Lin Rainey.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of A.C. English Jr., 5026 Raccoon Road, Manning.
Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church at Manning, P.O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102 or to Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1794 Old Georgetown Road, Manning, SC 29102.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

REVA F. CALDWELL
Reva Ford Caldwell, 97, widow of James L. Caldwell, died Friday, March 7, 2003, at Mariner Health of Sumter East.
Born Aug. 26, 1905, in the Paxville community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnny and Adeline DuRant Ford. Her education was obtained in the public schools of Clarendon County. She was baptized at an early age and joined Zion Baptist Church in Paxville. In 1927, she migrated to Salisbury, N.C., where she met and married her husband, the late James L. Caldwell, in 1929. While in North Carolina, she joined First Calvary Baptist Church, where she was an usher for 30 years, member of the Willing Worker’s Club, Missionary Circle No. 1 and sang in the gospel choir for 25 years. Reva moved back to Sumter in 1984, where she joined the Walker Avenue Church of God.
Survivors include a special niece and caregiver, Martha Stokes of Sumter; seven additional nieces; eight nephews; and a host of grandnieces and nephews and great- and great-great-nieces and nephews; several first cousins; her caring church family and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 13, at Walker Avenue Church of God with Pastor Bobby Damon officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park.
The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. until the hour of service.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:35 p.m. from the home of her niece, Martha Stokes, 314 Brand St.
The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Martha Stokes.
Sumter Funeral Service Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

DAVID MAGAZINE Sr.
David Magazine Sr., a son of the late Wash and Minnie Magazine, was born Oct. 20, 1924, in Bishopville. He quietly departed this life on Thursday, March 6, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
David attended the public schools in Lee County. After completing his education, he joined the United States Army and served his country and received an honorable discharge. David worked as a brick mason for 45 years, developing many structures for Sumter and surrounding countries.
He leaves to mourn a loving wife, Rosa Mae Magazine of the home, Sumter; three sons, David Magazine Jr. of Brooklyn, N.Y., Bishop Curtis Magazine of Queens, N.Y., and Johnny McDuffy of Augusta, Ga.; one daughter, evangelist Bessie Kennedy of Brooklyn, N.Y.; one stepson, Ricky Magazine of Spartanburg; two stepdaughters, Willie Mae Stuckey of Bishopville and Lurena McDaniel of Sumter; three brothers, James Magazine of Sumter, William Magazine of Bishopville and George Magazine of Bishopville; one sister, Lou Commanda of Bishopville; 14 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Larry W. Barnes, pastor, assisted by evangelist Patricia Magazine. Burial will follow in the Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.
Wake service will be held today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Community Funeral Home.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 1960 South Guignard Parkway, Sumter. Community Funeral Home is in charge of these arrangements.

MARTHA W. KNOX
FREEPORT, N.Y. — Martha Watson Knox, 80, widow of Quincy Knox, died March 9, 2003, at Townhouse Extended Care Center, N.Y.
Born Dec. 9, 1922, in Loris, Horry County, she was a daughter of the late Everett and Rosetta Floyd Watson. She attended the public schools of Horry County, S.C. At an early age, she received Christ and was baptized at Silent Grove Baptist Church. She became a member of Holy Temple Church, Myrtle Beach, S.C., where she was an active member and worked in the community as a cosmetologist. She later moved to Rockville Centre, N.Y. She became a loyal member of St. John’s FBH Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served as a missionary, sang on the choir and served on the usher board. She was an all-around person, lovingly known as “Mama Knox.” To better herself, she became certified as a pediatric and geriatric caregiver. After retirement, she returned back home where she was reunited with Silent Grove Baptist Church and Shield Chapel Hill Church, South Carolina. Survivors include two sisters, Mildred (Leroy) Bowman of Sumter and Earlene Lesane of Baltimore; other survivors, Dianna, Alberta, Michael, Jeffrey, Eunice and the girls; two sisters-in-law, Hattie M. Watson of Loris, S.C., and Rosa Lee Watson of Little River, S.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by one son, Willie Joe Knox; and 11 siblings.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Silent Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Loris, with the Rev. John D. Floyd, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. Burial will be in Silent Grove Cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church Thursday at noon.
Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JOE AVANT Jr.
MANNING — Joe “Bug” Avant Jr., 55, died Monday, March 10, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born Aug. 31, 1947, in the Lanes section of Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Joe Avant Sr. and Elizabeth Harris Avant. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County at Alcolu Elementary School, and he was a graduate of the Manning Training School Class of 1968. In his youth, he joined Greenhill Baptist Church under the pastorage of the Rev. Vandroth Baccus.
Survivors include a daughter, Jessica N. Aiken of Manning; two brothers, Lonnie (Josephine) Avant of Manning and Willie Avant of San Diego; and four sisters, Shirley (Jesse) Lewis, Carrie (David) McDonald, Sadie Williams and Alice (Jackie) Way, all of Manning.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Greenhill Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Men of the church and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers.
Ladies of the church and friends of the family will serve as flower bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home, 116 Fulton St., Manning.

WILLIAM MONTGOMERY
William “Tapa” Montgomery, 61, husband of Lelia Singleton Montgomery, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 14, 1941, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Eugene and Lamb Budden Montgomery. At an early age, he accepted Christ and joined Enon Missionary Baptist Church. He attended the public schools in Sumter and later resided in Brooklyn, N.Y., for several years. He returned to Sumter and worked in his trade as a cement finisher. He later joined Beulah UME Church.
Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, Kisha (Christopher) Pace of Atlanta and Angela Montgomery of Sumter; two stepsons, Albert Kelly and Marion Kelly III, both of Sumter; a brother, Eugene (Rebecca) Montgomery of Sumter; four sisters, Luefenia Glisson, Addrana Jones, Ivory (Maxwell) Benson and Earline Jones, all of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Robert Rhames of Sumter and Jimmy Singleton of Brooklyn; a sister-in-law, Jannie Coleman of Brooklyn; a very special cousin, Susan Conyers; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Carol Montgomery and Pearline Montgomery.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Beulah UME Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Boyd, pastor, officiating, assisted by Bishop Q.B. Conyers, the Rev. Eliza Black and Minister Loretta Jones. Burial will be in Cain Cemetery, Sumter.
The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today.
The family will receive friends at the home of his sister, Earline Jones, 917 Jenson Road, Sumter.

EDITH S. HOWLAND
Edith LaVerne Sullivan Howland, 85, widow of William J. Howland, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Morningside Assisted Living.
Born in Rankin, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William Sullivan and the late Edith Hodges Sullivan.
Surviving are two sons, William M. “Bill” Howland of Sumter and Milton G. Howland of Phoenix, Ariz.; two daughters, Donna Hinkili of Madison, Ohio, and Sandra L. Murdock of Wisconsin; three brothers; and three sisters.
Services will be held in Painesville, Ohio.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the local arrangements.

WILLIE L. McKENZIE Jr.
FLORENCE — Willie “Mutt” Louis McKenzie Jr., 68, husband of Martha Mae Gamble McKenzie, died Sunday, March 9, 2003, at Carolina Hospital System in Florence.
Born Dec. 24, 1934, in the Barineau section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Willie McKenzie Sr. and Charlotte Pearl McFadden McKenzie. He received his formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. In his youth, he accepted Christ and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church, attending until his health failed.
Survivors besides his wife include a son, Willie Louis McKenzie III of Lake City; two daughters, Mary Ann McFadden of Olanta and Betty Jean McKenzie of Baltimore; a brother, Isaac Brayboy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; four sisters, Ida Mae Davis of Cocoa Beach, Fla., Lottie Mae Rogers of Lake City, Rebecca Shaw of Patterson, N.J., and Lero McKenzie of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Clarence and John Henry McKenzie and King Davis; and three sisters, Annie L. McKenzie, Dorothy Mae Nelson and Dorothy Bell Powell.
Funeral services will be held at noon Friday at St. Mark Believers Holiness Church, Delano St., Lake City, with Presiding Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper, pastor, officiating, assited by Bishop O.D. Fulton. Burial will be in McKenzie-Brown Cemetery.
Friends of the family and men of the church will serve as pallbearers.
Friends of the family and ladies of the church will serve as flower bearers.
The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Pearlie Mae Williams, 268 Ed. Road, Lake City.

BERNARD JOSEY
PATERSON, N.J. — Bernard Josey, 55, died Saturday, March 8, 2003, in Paterson.
Born in Richland County, he was a son of the late John Jacoban and Lucy Josey Jacobs. he attended the public schools of Lee County.
Surviving are two sisters, Betty Jean Josey and Patricia Slater, both of Bishopville; and one uncle, Walter Josey of Paterson.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 3 p.m. at St. Mark Baptist Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Williams officiating. Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Walter and Patricia Slater, 531 Manville-Wisacky Road, Bishopville.
Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CECIL DAYSON
Cecil Dayson of Sumter, 82, husband of Ivy James Dayson, died Tuesday, March 11, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Nov. 10, 1920, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Emmitt Dayson and Hortance Murray Dayson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 35 Wright St. in Sumter.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St. in Sumter.
