CHARLES H. MULDROW
WASHINGTON, D.C. — Charles Henry Muldrow died Thursday, March 13, 2003, after a brief illness.
Born Sept. 3, 1945, in Washington, he was a son of Mrs. Mureen Muldrow Morris of Washington and the late Mr. Charles H. Williams.
He graduated from high school and attended Phelps Vocational School where he specialized in mechanics and electronics. He served in the United States Navy from 1964-1968. He moved to Sumter in 1977. He joined Mount Pisgah AME Church, where he sang in the Senior Choir. He was employed by Montague Industrial Inc. He was a third junior vice commander of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 5. He also held the position of the Aide to D.A.V., State Department Commander. He was Scout Master of the Boy Scout Troop 136 of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and District Commissioner for Henry Shelor Pee Dee Area Council for Troops 136, 109 and 132. He was Brotherhood Advisor of Order of the Arrow. He received the Henry Shelor District Award of Merit, the Silver Beaner and the Wood Badge Award. He attended Boy Scouts of American College of Commissioner Science and was qualified as a master of commissioner science. He was in the process of setting up a handicapped Boy Scout Troop for the Pee Dee Area Council of the Henry Shelor District.
Mr. Muldrow was a compassionate and caring person who spent many days helping youth and senior citizens.
Survivors besides his mother, includes a stepmother, Mrs. Rose Ann Williams of Sumter; a daughter, Ms. Michele McClain of Virginia; a brother, Mr. James L. Felder of Columbia; two sisters, Mrs. Barbara Jean Williams of Tampa, Fla., and Ms. Joyce M. Williams of Columbia; aunts; nieces; nephews; a special and devoted friend, Mrs. Gladys Gilmore-Scarborough of Sumter and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 21, at Community United Methodist Church in Washington.
Bacon Funeral Home of Washington is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the Boy Scout Troop 136 or to Disabled American Veterans Chapter No. 5 of Sumter.

MICHAEL J. CARUSO
Michael James Caruso, 45, died Friday, March 7, 2003, in Edgewater, Fla.
Born in Topeka, Kan., he was a son of Elinor Bobick Caruso and the late Nicola D. Caruso.
Surviving are his mother of Sumter; two sons, Anthony Scott Caruso of Maryland and David Patrick Caruso of Edgewater; and a sister, Kathryn L. Caruso of Bowie, Md.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Nick Patrick Caruso.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 22, in the Chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. LaRue Cook and the Rev. Cheryl Caruso officiating.
Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.

WILLIAM H. MIMS
MYRTLE BEACH — Mr. William Hoyt Mims, 70, of 1214 Stalvey Ave., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, in the Conway Nursing Center after an illness.
Born in Lake City, a son of the late Marshall and Mary Floyd Mims. He retired from the A & P Tea Company, was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and served in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Florine Cole Mims of Myrtle Beach; two sons, Allen Mims of Myrtle Beach and Michael McGee of Lake City; a daughter, Sharon Edwards of Myrtle Beach; six grandchildren, Traci and Elizabeth Mims and Jason and Caroline Edwards, all of Myrtle Beach, and David and Jennifer McGee, both of Lake City; three nephews, John Mims of Sumter, Dan Mims and Eric Mims, both of Olanta; and two nieces, Beth Mims of Sumter and Connie Mims of Olanta.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Odell Mims and Bernard “Jimmy” Mims.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today at Scranton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Lake City Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2507 Old Miles Road, Lake City, SC 29560.

JAMES H. RICHBOURG
SUMMERTON — James Hunter Richbourg, 79, widower of Helen Messervy Richbourg, died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Summerton.
Born Dec. 3, 1923, in Summerton, he was a son of the late Bennie Fladger and Sadie Hunter Richbourg. He was a retired farmer, an Army Air Corps veteran of WWII, a member of Summerton United Methodist Church, where he was president of the Men’s Bible Class, and a member of the Summerton Lion’s Club.
Surviving are two daughters, Helen Louise Bruggemann of Charleston and Frances Ann Richbourg of Summerton; two sons, James Hunter Richbourg II of Sumter and Alexander John Richbourg III of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Sara Bryan of Columbia; three brothers, Bennie Fladger Richbourg Jr. of Charleston; Ret. Col. John Allen Richbourg of Alexandria, Va., and Henry Morris Richbourg of Port Ludlow, Washington State; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Summerton United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carolyn R. Malphrus officiating. Burial will follow in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the home, 7 Walker St. in Summerton.
Memorials may be made to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery, c/o Johnny Scott, 11 Caldwell Street, Summerton, or to Summerton United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 35, Summerton, SC 29148.

SARA C. OWENS
BISHOPVILLE — Sara Ruby Cox Owens, 88, widow of Herbert L. Owens, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Covenant Place.
Born in Lancaster County, she was a daughter of the late Rosman Cox and the late Odie Reynolds Cox.
Mrs. Owens was a member of Memorial Chapel.
Surviving are two daughters, Marguerite Owens Vaughn of Bishopville and Eleanor Beggan and her husband, Clayton, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Dan Luff and the Rev. Ron Glass officiating. Burial will follow in Piedmont Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 2398 Green Lane in Bishopville.

WILLIE M. BLANDING
MANNING — Willie Mood Blanding, husband of Eloise Blanding, died Friday, March 14, 2003, at his home.
Born Feb. 1, 1931, in Manning, he was a son of the late Stephen Blanding Sr. and the late Sallie Cummings Blanding.
He retired in 1998 after working in Philadelphia, Pa., for 35 years with the NECCO Candy Company.
Survivors include a son, Darrell Blanding of Philadelphia; two daughters, Deborah Hatchell and Adrian Dickson, both of Philadelphia; a brother, Jewel Blanding of Manning; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Bell Thames and Mrs. Elloree Gooden, both of Boston, Mass.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mount Zero Baptist Church in the Paxville Community with the Rev. Dr. C. Richburg officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 1216 Dowell St. in the Red Hill Community of Manning.

ROBERT E. GAINES
Robert Edward Gaines, 50, widower of Valerie M. Braxton Gaines, died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Feb. 28, 1953, in Essex, Va., he was a son of Bertha P. “Marie” Gaines and the late Robert Wendell Gaines. He was educated in the public schools of Walker-T-Grant and graduated from James Monroe High School in Fredericksburg, Va. After graduation, he joined the United States Army where he served his tour of duty in the Vietnam War and received an honorable discharge.
Survivors include a son, Andrea Malone; four daughters, Uneika Gaines, Robben Gaines, Tiffany Smith and Angel Malone; a brother, Ricky Gaines of Woodbridge, Va.; a sister, Evangelist Barbara C. Camp of Colonial Beach, Va.; and several grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Quinn Chapel AME Church with the Rev. Lavern Witherspoon officiating, assisted by Evangelist Barbara C. Camp. Burial will follow in White’s Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Thruston Lane (Jamail), Bernard Leonard, Randell Murphy, Kevin Loney and Brian McCleod.
Floral bearers will be Yulandria Ragins, Lakeya Cooper, Shana Johnson, Tiffany Smith, Rebecca Robinson, Margaret Rembert and Tasha Cooper.
The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home, 2415 Bryson Road.
The family will receive friends at the home.

MAYBELL J. SPANN
Maybell Johnson Spann, 79, widow of Williams Spann Sr., died Monday, March 17, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 16, 1923, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late James Johnson and Fannie Cabbagestalk Johnson. She attended the public schools of Sumter County. She confessed Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age when she joined Mount Olive AME Church.
Survivors include five sons, Arthur Spann of Mesa, Ariz., William Spann of Table City, N.C., James Spann of Mayesville, Charles Spann of Dalzell and SSG Charles L. Spann of Garden, Mich.; a daughter, Susie Brisbane of the home; an adopted daughter, Rosa Lee McQuillar of Bishopville; three sisters, Louise Alston of Washington, D.C., Elizabeth Brailsford of Linden, N.J., and Evelyn Jefferson of Dalzell; 38 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren and 13 adopted grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Catherine Spann Nickens, two sisters and two brothers.
A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 tonight in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Mount Olive AME Church in Woodrow with the Rev. Timothy A. Johnson Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roberta Wilson. Burial will follow in Colclough Cemetery in Sumter.
Pallbearers will be grandsons and members of the Woodrow Elite Club.
Floral bearers will be family members and members of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
The funeral procession will leave at 1:15 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Susie Brisbane, 5460 Raymond Jenkins Road in Dalzell.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Susie Brisbane.

ROBERT H. SMITH
GREENVILLE — Robert Harvin Smith, 69, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Tuesday, March 18, 2003, at Greenville Memorial Hospital after a long illness.
A native of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Robert Stewart Smith and Laura Cutter Smith. He served as a specialist three-class in the U.S. Army Signal Corps during the Korean Conflict. He graduated with honors from Clemson University in 1959 with a bachelor of science in electrical engineering. He was a registered professional engineer in the state of North Carolina. He retired from Ecusta as director of project engineering. He was the former owner of Viking Equipment of Asheville, N.C. He was a member of Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church, where he was an active elder and former chairman of the Board of Deacons. Recently, he served on the property and finance committees as well as several others in the past. He was a member of the Board of Transylvania County Arts Council.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy Still Smith; a son, Robert Harvin Smith Jr. of the home; a daughter, Sherry Smith Hyatt and her husband, Chuck, of Jasper, Tenn.; two brothers, George E. Smith and his wife, Jean, of Charleston and Ronnie Smith and his wife, Diane, of Gable; two sisters, Ruth Pearson and her husband, Newton, of Bishopville and Roberta Hulme and her husband, Mike, of Newbern, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Laura Blynn Short and her husband, Matt, of Sandy Springs, Ga., and April Hyatt of Charlotte, N.C.; a stepmother, Sadie Smith Ridgeway of Newbern and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jessie Cannon.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Moody-Connolly Funeral Home.
The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. at Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church and conducted by the Rev. Keith Thompson and the Rev. Ron Gilmer. A private burial will be in Pisgah Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brevard Davidson River Presbyterian Church Building Fund, 300 E. Main St., Brevard, NC 28712.

PAMELA GREGG
Miss Pamela “Nee Nee” Gregg, 29, died Monday, March 17, 2003, on North Western Street in Sumter.
Born March 1, 1974, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Mr. Harold Gregg and Mrs. Mattie Witherspoon Gregg. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County.
Survivors besides her parents include, two sons, Marcus Antonio Gregg and Herbert Lamont Gregg, both of the home; a daughter, Melissa Monique Gregg of the home; and two brothers, Willie Harold Gregg and Alfred Burgess and his wife, Sonya, all of Sumter.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at Faith Enterprise Church with the Rev. Leon Winn officiating, assisted by the Rev. Alvin Wells, the Rev. Leroy T. James and the Rev. M.G. Walters. Burial will follow in the Bradford Cemetery.
The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home, 237 Clement Road.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the home.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LUTHER THOMPSON
SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Elder Luther Thompson, 78, husband of Lillie Mae Thompson, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at Dosher Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 1, 1925, in Mullins, he was a son of the late Elliott and Liza Thompson.
During his youthful years, he worked as a longshoreman, a carpenter and was a pastor of Friendship Holiness Church for 30 years.
Survivors besides his wife include, a son, Lawrence Smith and his wife, Victoria, of Bolivia, N.C.; a brother, Woodrow Thompson and his wife, Anna Bell, of Sumter; a sister, Ruth Sellers of Syracuse, N.Y.; five stepchildren, Eunice Roberts, Kenneth Roberts and his wife, Karen, all of Southport, Saundra Roberts of St. Pauls, N.C., Pernell Roberts of Longs and Oscar Roberts Jr. of Raleigh, N.C.; a stepgrandchild, Demetris “Tony” Roberts; four sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, and a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 19, at Friendship Holiness Church in Bolivia with Elder Teon Taylor officiating, assisted by Elder Emauel Evans.
