George Cook, 78, widower of Christina Williams Cook, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born April 22, 1924, in Sumter, he was a son of the late George Cook Sr. and Tossie McDaniel Cook.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece, Flossie, Cook, 1015 Porter St. in Sumter.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

DEACON MOSES MCDUFFIE Sr.
MANNING - Deacon Moses McDuffie Sr., 78, widower of Sarah Hilton McDuffie, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at 101 Richburg St. in Manning.
Born Jan. 2, 1925, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Doc McDuffie and Hennie Huggins McDuffie. He attended the Eadon Street School in Paxville. In his youth he accepted Christ as his savior and joined Mount Zero Baptist Church in Paxville. Later he joined the Church of God by Faith in Davis Station. He served as chairman of the Deacon Board, Senior Choir, Male Choir, Five Man Board of the South Carolina District and father of the church. He retired from Wateree Community Action/Carpenter.
Survivors include six sons, Minister Richmond (Lila) McDuffie, Moses (Brenda) McDuffie, Nathaniel (Barbara) McDuffie and John McDuffie, all of Manning, Bishop (Patricia) McDuffie of Fayetteville, N.C. and Deacon Lenon (Kate) McDuffie of Sumter; three daughters, Eva (George) Spry and Hennie McDuffie, both of Manning and Beulah Gillard of Pineville; two grandchildren he reared as his own, Karen Harvin of Columbia and Caroline Gillard of Sumter; an adopted son, Ulysses (Beverly) Conyers of Columbia; an adopted sister, Liza Huggins of Boston, Mass.; four foster children, Diane Myers and Bell and Randell Conyers of Manning and Willie Roy Conyers of New York; 26 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Lee James McDuffie, and a brother, Levan McDuffie.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Trinity AME Church, 39 Rigby St. in Manning, with the Rev. John A. Fredrick, pastor, and Elder Thomas Davis officiating, assisted by Elders Mack Wilson, James Taylor, Cleveland McBride Sr., Richard Jones and James Lucas. Burial will be in the Mt. Zero Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery, S.C. 261 West, Manning.
Men of the Church of God by Faith and friends of the family will serve as pallbearers. Ladies of the Church of God by Faith and friends of the family will serve as flower bearers.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 101 Richburg St. in Manning.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

JOSEPH D. “J.D.” ARD
MANNING - Joseph Deleon Ard, 60, husband of June Ridgeway Ard, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Jan. 17, 1943, in Lake City, he was a son of the late Troy and Opal Collins Ard. He was a quality assurance technician, a Navy veteran and a member of Second Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Manning, are two sons, Joseph Deleon Ard Jr. and Michael Shawn Ard of Manning; a daughter, Jennifer Delynn Ard of Manning; three sisters, Carolyn Sawyer of Columbia and Gertie Barnhill and Dottie Collins of Marion; a brother, Jerry Ard, of Lake City; and three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, in Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Pec Chatham officiating. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jamie Ridgeway, Jeremy Ridgeway, Ken Justice, Leo Sustaita, Richard DuBose and Mac Bagnal. Honorary pallbearer will be Ken Justice Jr.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence, 609 Pine Court, Manning.

EARTHA GREGG BENNETT
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Eartha Gregg Bennett died at her home in Charlotte on Thursday, April 3, 2003.
She was born on Jan. 17, 1947.
Arrangements are incomplete.
The family will receive friends at 513 Tubbs Court in Bishopville.
Services will be announced by Boatwright Funeral Home.

CHRISTOPHER W. GREEN
BISHOPVILLE - Funeral services for Christopher W. Green, age 14, who died April 3, 2003, will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Calvary Baptist Church. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Norton Funeral Home.
Christopher, born in Columbia, was the son of Jeffery and Barbara McCathern Green Sr. He was a ninth-grader at Lee Central High School.
Surviving besides his parents are: one brother, Jeffery Green Jr.; two sisters, Tasha Backman and April Green; four grandparents, Paul Green, Hazel Stogner, William McCathern and Rhodie Bowers; and a great-grandmother, Edna Green.

H. SHELDEN TIMMERMAN
H. Shelden Timmerman, husband of 50 years to Nancy Gibson Timmerman, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at his residence in Sumter.
Mr. Timmerman was born in Edgefield, a son of the late William Ryght and Marianne Cheatham Timmerman. Having been a musician all of his life, he was a piano performance major at Furman University, and his graduate study was in piano pedagogy at St. Louis Institute of Music. He taught piano and directed the high school chorus in Denmark-Olar High School as well as directing the music at the Denmark First Baptist Church. He moved his family to Sumter in 1965 where he was minister of music at Sumter First Baptist Church until 1968 and also established a private piano studio which he maintained until 2002. He served as a a nationwide adjudicator of piano student auditions for the National Guild of Piano Teacher for more than 20 years and conducted piano teacher workshops in several states. Locally, he was co-organizer, charter member and past president of the Sumter Piano Teachers Association, served in past years on the Community Concert Board of Directors and the Fine Arts Council of Sumter County as well as accompanist / vocal coach for the Second Mill Singers. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of the Holy Comforter of Sumter.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are: one son, Shelden Timmerman Jr., and his wife, Christie, of Rock Hill; one daughter, Lesa Jean Timmerman of Columbia; one brother, John Albert Timmerman of Columbia; one sister, Sabrina Timmerman Walker of Chapin; and two granddaughters, Kristin and Lindsay Timmerman of Rock Hill.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Ryght Timmerman, and one sister, Lula Timmerman Sandifer.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the home and also in the Family Life Center of the Holy Comforter immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Timmerman Piano Scholarship Fund c/o Fine Arts Council of Sumter, 10 Mood Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home for the arrangements.

JAMES “BOBBY” PEAY JR.
James “Bobby” Peay, Jr., 59, died March 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born April 28, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Peay Sr. and Maggie Wiley Peay.
At an early age, Mr. Peay received Christ and joined Rafting Creek Missionary Baptist Church and later studied under the leadership of the Jehovah’s Witnesses. He attended and received his education from Ebenezer High School. He was employed by the Sumter County School System and later worked as a private landscaper until his health declined. He supported and was deeply involved with the Feed the Hungry Children organization.
Survivors besides his wife include two daughters, LoShonda Peay and LeTicia Peay, both of Pascagoula, Miss.; a stepdaughter, Michelle Chapman of Wedgefield; a sister, Betty Ellis of Petersburg, Va.; an aunt, a nephew, a niece and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, April 6, 2003, at 3 p.m. at Job’s Mortuary Parlor, 312 S. Main St., Sumter. Burial will follow at Rafting Creek Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery in Rembert. Victor Jackson will officiate, assisted by Bobby Pearson. The family is receiving friends at the residence, 5560 Dais Rd., Rembert.
Job’s Mortuary, Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SYLVIA B. ELMORE
Sylvia Baker Elmore, 54, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at her home.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of Clyde McSwain Baker Jr. and Rounette Corbett.
She was a member of Bondovlove Baptist Church and was the operations manager for UBS Paine Webber.
Surviving besides her parents of Sumter are two sons, Gerald Wayne Elmore Jr. and his wife, Susan Murphy Elmore of Greenwood, and Bryan Neil Elmore and his wife, Amanda Travis Elmore of Melbourne, Fla., and two granddaughters, Lauren Elizabeth Elmore and Madison Louise Elmore. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Bondovlove Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bondovlove Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Bondovlove Baptist Church Building Fund, 2755 Carter Road, Sumter, SC 29150 or to Hospice Care of Tri-County, 1236-B Wilson Hall Road, Sumter, SC 29150.

LOUELLA “GURDIE’ BRITTON
Louella “Gurdie” Britton, 91, widow of Henry Britton, died Thursday, April 3, 2003, at her home.
She was born April 21, 1912, in Clarendon County and was a daughter of the late Robert China and Mrs. Elizabeth McCoy China.
She was a member of Beulah AME Church, where she served as a member of the Women’s Missionary Society, Stewardess Board, Ladies Club and Church School and Lay Organization. A women’s missionary society unit was named in her honor. She was currently serving as “Mother of the Church.”
Survivors include two sons, George Britton and Harold Britton of Sumter; one daughter, Victoria Prioleau of Springfield, Va; two sisters, Theola Bouldin of Baltimore and Geraldine Gray of Chesapeake, Va; 11 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her son, Henry Lee Britton, two brothers, Robert L. China Sr. and Matthew Isaac; three sisters, Janie Walston, Emily Louise Dancy and Rozenia Lovely.
The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Monday at Beulah AME Church. The Rev. O’Neal Miller will officiate, assisted by presiding Elder Robert L. McCants, the Revs. St. Julian Snider Sr., Archie S. Temoney Sr., Joshua Dupree and Robert L. China Jr.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The body will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. The funeral procession will leave from 1550 Illery Road at 2:30 p.m.The family also will receive friends there. Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

BERTIE P. FICKLING
Bertie Parker Fickling, 78, wife of James Alexander Fickling, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at her home.
Born in Conway, she was a daughter of the late Mini Chestnut Parker and Asa Clarence Parker.
Mrs. Fickling was a member of Bethesda Church of God and was a member and former officer of Women Aglow. She was currently serving as a member of the Board of Elders for Morris Cerello World Evangelist and had for many years.
Surviving are her husband of 60 years of Sumter; two sons, Jimmy A. Fickling Jr. and wife, Bitsey of Manning; Steve P. Fickling and wife, Vicki of Wedgefield; one daughter, Sandy F. McLeod of Sumter; four sisters, Florence P. James and Geneva P. Benbow both of Sumter, Saddie P. Huggins of Charleston and Jo Nell P. Messey of Ft. Worth, TX; eight grandchildren, Kirk McLeod III and wife, Stephanie, Ryan McLeod and wife, Wendy, Chad McLeod and wife, Kristi, Heidi F. Drawdy and husband Glenn, Kelly F. Reardon and husband, Ben, Bretta F. Richburg and husband Kevin, Misty F. Hatfield and husband, Lee, Windy F. Brown and husband, Eddie; 14 great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren and one step great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernie Parker, Clarence Parker and Jennings Parker; and her sister, Ruby P. Pendarvis.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethesda Church of God on the Camden Highway, with the Rev. Al Sims officiating. Burial will follow in the Troublefield Cemetery in Wedgefield.
Pallbearers will be grandsons Kirk McLeod III, Ryan McLeod, Chad McLeod and grandsons-in-law Ben Reardon, Kevin Richburg, Lee Hatfield, Glenn Drawdy and Eddie Brown.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 798 Lang Jennings Drive.
Memorials may be made to Bethesda Church of God, 1402 Camden Road, S.C. 521-North, Sumter, SC, 29150 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

EVELYN N. ANDERSON JAMES
COLUMBIA — Evelyn N. Anderson James, widow of Samuel James, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center.
She was born in Sumter County on Aug. 15, 1924, and was a daughter of the late Mallissa Anderson and James Anderson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Sandy James of 40 N. St. Paul Church Road in Sumter.
Funeral services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

GEORGE COOK
George Cook, widower of Christina Williams Cook, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. He was 78.
Born on April 22, 1924, in Sumter, he was a son of the late George Cook Sr. and Tossie McDaniel Cook.
He attended Sumter County public schools and enjoyed his life-long career of being a successful mechanic. He was in partnership with his brother, the late Haskell “Hack” Cook, owner of Cook’s Garage, until his death. Through his career he was able to touch many lives with his winning personality and smile.
Survivors include his son, Salaam Ghafir of Baltimore; two daughters, Joyce Ann Hill of Baltimore, Patricia Lee Cook of Chicago; an extraordinary niece, Ms. Flossie Cook and two special cousins, Robert Cook and Willie Moses III, who cared for him during his illness; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Haskell “Hack” Cook, and son, Larry Cook.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday. at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in the Ashwood community. The Rev. Herbert Fogle will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m.
The funeral procession will leave from the home of his niece, Flossie Cook of 1015 Porter St., at 1:20 p.m.
