HOWARD M. BROWN
BISHOPVILLE — Howard M. “Pete” Brown, 82, husband of Nelle F. Brown, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born in Lee County, he was a son of the late George L. Brown and the late Bessie Nesbitt Brown.
Mr. Brown was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He was retired from DuPont.
Surviving besides his wife are a son, G. Howard Brown Sr. of Sullivans Island; three daughters, Sonia B. Spivey and her husband, Tommy, of Sumter, Angie B. Purpura and her husband, Phil, of Florence, and the Rev. Denise B. Seymour and her husband, Joe, of Rembert; 10 grandchildren, Jodi S. Hewett, Lori Seymour, Josh Seymour, Lauren Spivey, Julie Purpura, Alaine Purpura, Leslee Purpura, Laura Purpura, Rudder Brown and Kep Brown; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Michael D. Brown.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. The Rev. Ken Phelps will officiate. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home, 95 Wild Goose Lane, Bishopville.
Memorials can be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM COSTNER
William “Gary” Costner, 69, husband of Margaret Owens Costner, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Palmetto Health Richland in Columbia.
Born in Edgefield, he was a son of the late Joseph Lester Costner Sr. and Rubye Wood Costner.
Mr. Costner was twice married, first to the late Mary Grooms Costner and then to Margaret Owens Costner.
Mr. Costner was a Baptist. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a retired construction employee.
Surviving in addition to his wife of Sumter are two stepdaughters, Michelle Warner Powell and her husband, Rob, and Shannon Warner Perry and her husband, David, all of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; three sisters, Isabelle C. Cheek of Sumter, Corrie Ellen C. Sauls of Irmo and Faye C. Inabinet of Columbia; five grandchildren, Austin Powell, Spence Powell, Ethan Powell, Courtney Perry and Alex Perry; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Eustice Wood Costner and Joseph Lester Costner.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Sumter Cemetery. The Rev. Donnie Collins will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Bob Ferrell, David DuBose, Tommy Turbeville, Hugh Hodge, Clint Hodge and Dewey Trantham.
The family will receive friends at the home.
Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260 or to the charity of one’s choice.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SADIE B. PEARSON NELSON
Sadie Bell Pearson Nelson, widow of George “J.W.” Nelson, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Hopewell Nursing Home in Sumter. She was 85.
She was born in the Davis Station section of Clarendon County on March 14, 1917. She was a daughter of the late Eugene and Ella Pearson.
She received her education from Clarendon County public schools. She was a member of Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station and attended faithfully when she was able.
Survivors include two conservators, Shirley Umstead of Durham, N.C., and Beulah Parson of Davis Station; two grandnieces, Sandra Moore and Monica Pearson; two grandnephews, William Eugene Pearson and Raymond Perry, all of Baltimore.
She was preceded in death by her brother, William Eugene Pearson, and nephew William Edward “Bob” Pearson.
The funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at Laurel Hill AME Church in Davis Station. The Rev. Ronnie Brown will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Norman Umstead Jr. Burial will be in Hopkins Cemetery in Davis Station.
The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m.
The funeral procession will leave from Samuels Funeral Home at 11:20 a.m.
The family will receive friends today at Ramada Inn on West Boyce Street, S.C. 261.
Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of funeral arrangements.

MARION D. RILEY
Marion Douglas Riley, 61, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1942, in Clarendon County. He was a son of Mrs. Louise Riley and the late Mr. Smith Riley. He received his education from Clarendon County public schools. He was a member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Bracey Riley, of the home; two daughters, Betty Ruth Billups and her husband, Anthony, and Mrs. Mary Ruth Hastie, both of Sumter; one brother, Steve Riley and his wife, Thelma, of Paxville; five stepbrothers, George Robinson, Leon Riley, Lee Riley, David Riley and Robert Riley; two sisters, Viola Lee of Portsmouth, Va., and Margie Pearson of Brooklyn, N.Y.; five stepsisters, Eller Wilson, Shirley Ann Bore, Edith Amos, Emma Lee and Ella Williams.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter. The Rev. Marvin Hodge will officiate. Burial will be in Bradford Cemetery.
A wake service will be held today from 6 until 7 p.m. at Community Funeral Home. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Anthony Billups of 520 Pioneer Drive, Sumter.
Viewing will be at Community Funeral Home from 1 until 9 p.m. today.
The body will be placed in state at the church Tuesday from 1 p.m. until the hour of service.
Community Funeral Home of Sumter is handling the arrangements.

EVELYN A. JAMES
Evelyn Nesbitt A. James, 78, widow of Samuel James, died Friday, April 4, 2003, at Palmetto Baptist Hospital.
Born in the Claremont community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James Anderson II and the late Mallissa Anderson (centenarian). She was the third child of five siblings. In her youth, she joined Wayman Chapel AME Church. She received her education in the public schools of Sumter County, Miami and Charleston. After returning home from school, she met and married her devoted late husband in 1946. Later they migrated to New York for a number of years. She was employed with the Westinghouse Co. where she made many friends. Upon returning to the Sumter community, she and her husband bought a farm, built their home and she began her membership at Mount Zion UM Church along with her husband. They resumed their ardent passion for farming and created a special home in which they reared a family of five daughters and a son. In addition to farming a variety of crops, they became the first black family to raise chickens and turkeys for Campbell Soup, and also were instrumental in assisting many black farmers to do likewise.
Survivors include a son, Vernon (Rosalina) James of Sumter; five daughters, Linda V. Alston of Sumter, Evelyn “Poopie” V. (Calvin) Woods and Betty A. James, all of Columbia, Elaine “Bunny” James M.D. of Los Angeles and Sandy D. James of Sumter; an aunt, Mattie Wilson; two sisters, Ruby A. Sanders of New York City, Ruthell A. Muldrow of Sumter; four sisters-in-law, Melcina K. Anderson, Lottie M. Anderson, Lillie Pitts and Eartha L. (Reuben) Davis; eight grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. She is also survived by a host of special nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and a special little cousin, Anthony L. Branch.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Leroy Anderson and James Anderson III; and a devoted son-in-law, Louis Alston.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion UM Church with the Rev. Telley L. Gadson officiating. Burial will follow in Harvin Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be the men of Mount Zion UM Church.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
Floral bearers will be the women of Mount Zion UM Church.
The remains will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
The funeral procession will leave at 1 p.m. from 40 N. St. Paul Church Road.
The family will receive friends at 40 N. St. Paul Church Road.
Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

ROUNNETTE C. BAKER
Rounnette Corbett Baker, 74, wife of Clyde McSwain Baker Jr., died Monday, April 7, 2003, in Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Jan. 12, 1929, in Manning, she was a daughter of the late John Allen and Ola Thigpen Corbett. She was a member of Bondovlove Baptist Church.
Surviving besides her husband of Sumter are a brother, John A. Corbett of Manning; five sisters, Lois Corbett Kennedy of Kingstree, Johnnie Mae Corbett Repsher of Manning, Ola Virginia Corbett Brago of Goose Creek, Mary Corbett Lotwis of Manning and Helen Corbett Weeks of Manning; two grandsons, Gerald Wayne Elmore Jr. and wife, Susan Murphy Elmore, of Greenwood and Bryan Neil Elmore and wife, Amanda Travis Elmore, of Melbourne, Fla.; and two great granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sylvia B. Elmore and a sister, Betty Lou Corbett Harring.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Bondovlove Baptist Church. The Rev. Ron Richardson will officiate. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Lin Rainey, Johnny Weeks, Robbie Weeks, Allan Richburg, Johnny Corbett and Terry Benton.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Bondovlove Baptist Church Building Fund, 2755 Carter Road, Sumter, SC 29150. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

ELLANORA G. SESSION
SUMMERTON — Ellanora Green Session, 53, widow of Robert Session, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Oct. 1, 1949, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of Archie Bell Brown and the late Sanders Green.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1037 Homer St. Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

ANTHONY L. WILSON
PHILADELPHIA — Anthony Lee Wilson, 33, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003.
Born Aug. 17, 1969, in Philadelphia, he was a son of Ernestine Deas.
The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 6360 Rhodes Drive in Rembert.
Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

LEONARD ADGER Sr.
MANNING — Leonard Adger Sr., 52, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born July 7, 1950, in Manning, he was a son of Elizabeth Ludd Adger and the late Sylvester Adger Sr.
The family will receive friends at the home, 9261 Paxville Highway.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

ADA P. GREGG
MAYESVILLE — Ada P. Gregg, 93, widow of Henry Gregg, died Sunday, April 6, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 14, 1909, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Pete and Ella Durant Peterson.
The family will receive friends at the home, 154 Carbett St. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

HANNAH L. ACKERMAN
Hannah Levy Ackerman, 99, widow of Emil Ralph Ackerman, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Covenant Place.
Born in Bishopville, she was a daughter of the late Oscar Levy and the late Minnie Needle Levy.
Mrs. Ackerman was former owner and operator of the Ben Franklin Store in Wallace, N.C.
Survivors include a son, Roger W. Ackerman and his wife, Deane, of Sumter; a sister, Rita Fogel of Georgetown; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Pam Ackerman Brown.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sumter Jewish Cemetery with Rabbi Robert Seigel officiating.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Ackerman, Steve Menaker, Tim Jurs, Abe Stern, Hugh Humphries, Harold Babhan, Arthur Ness and Joe Hallow.
Honorary pallbearers will be Hubert Osteen, Charles Propst, Chris Caison, Robert Moses, Seymour Levin and Rand Bailey.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, 117 Snowden St. from 5 to 7 tonight.

PEARL R. GODWIN
Pearl Roberta Godwin, 82, widow of Foster Godwin, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, in Burke, Va.
Born July 14, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Ruth Lawrence and Estell Coulter Brown.
Survivors include two sons, Foster Godwin of Blythewood and Samuel Lawrence Godwin of Hopkins; a daughter, Vera Jones of Burke; a sister, Ruby Timmons; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra LaNell Truett Inman and a brother, Joe Earl Brown.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sumter Cemetery with Vinning Long officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at 175 Macy St.
