EUGENE SPACE
MANNING — Eugene Space, 74, husband of Mrs. Lucile Cantey Space, died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at his home.
Born Sept. 28, 1928, he was the son of Mr. Marshall Space and Mrs. Mary Lou Space DeLaine. He attended the public schools of Clarendon County, and he joined St. Mark AME Church of Alcolu and later joined Macedonia Baptist Church in the Jordan community. He was a devoted member and he sang with the Macedonia Male Chorus. He was employed by Stuckey Lumber Co. and Clarendon County Public Works for many years in Clarendon County.
Survivors include six sons, Mr. Ralph (Betty) Space, Mr. Thomas Joe (Celestine) Space, Mr. Raymond Space, Mr. Chester Space and Mr. Allen Space, all of Manning, and Mr. Eugene Michael (Felica) of Hemmingway; two daughters, Mrs. Phyllis (Joe) Adger and Mrs. Diane (Rev. Emanuel) Evans, all of Manning; a brother, Mr. Richard Johnson of Manning; a sister, Mrs. Tisbia (Harold) Gipson of Manning; 22 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. Willard Space; and two children, Miss Sharon Space and Mr. Cheyenne Space.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Macedonia Baptist Church in the Jordan community of Manning with the Revs. Johnathan Mouzon, Darryl Frazier, Cokley Richburg, Stephen Bowe, O’Donald Dingle and Curtis Cantey and Evangelist Shirley Williams officiating. Burial will follow in State Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1187 Bramble Road in the Jordan community of Manning.
Fleming and DeLaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

VIOLET WOODS
SCRANTON — Ms. Violet Woods, 92, died Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at 3416 Stanley St. in Florence.
She was born Aug. 12, 1911, in Olanta. She is survived by a son, Marvin Jackson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Marvin Jackson, 530 W. Independence Ave. in Lake City.
Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City.

ROSA D. FORD
Rosa Lee Daniels Ford, 57, died Saturday, March 29, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 30, 1945, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Mose Daniels and the late William Bell Pearson Daniels. She received her formal education in Sumter County. At an early age, she joined Mulberry Baptist Church. She served faithfully on the Senior Usher Ministry and the Adult Choir Ministry. She later joined Faith Enterprise, where she served as an usher and as a member of the choir. She had a great love for gospel singing. She sang with the Gospel Queens, the Majestics and the Voluneers. She was employed by Tuomey Health Care System for many years and later employed by McElveen Manor until she became ill.
Survivors besides her father, include a daughter, Claudette (Stacy) Dyches of Bushkill, Pa.; three god-daughters, Angela David of Effingham, Theresa Holiday of Sumter and Tyeshia Gordon of Germany; a brother, Mose Daniels Jr. of Sumter; four sisters, Mary Bell (Robert) Tomlin of Sumter, Eloise (Willie Frank) Gordon of Roosevelt, N.Y., Jeannie (Alfred) Williams of Sumter and Ciera Daniels of North Carolina; two grandchildren, Rondretta and Kevin Dyches; a sister-in-law, Bernette Daniels of Sumter; two aunts, Maggie Wilson and Perleane Rufus of Sumter; two uncles, Julius Daniels and Freddie Rufus of Sumter; a special friend, Freddie Jones of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Friday.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Mulberry Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Ottis S. Scott Sr., pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Jones, the Revs. Dr. Charles H. Davis, Derrick L. Grant, Gerald Tomlin and Gusie Ceasar. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Mary (Robert) Tomlin, 1005 Nathaniel St. in Sumter.
Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SAMUEL REID
GREELEYVILLE— Samuel “Buster” Reid, 93, husband of Beulah Dukes Reid, died Wednesday, April 2, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital in Florence.
Born Aug. 12, 1909, in Greeleyville, he was a son of the late Richard Reid and Sarah Whack Reid.
The family will receive friends at the home, 23 Williams Lane in Greeleyville.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

JAMES PEAY Jr.
REMBERT — James “Bobby” Peay Jr., 59, husband of Lillian Chapman-Peay, died Monday, March 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born April 28, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Peay Sr. and Maggie Wiley Peay.
The family will receive friends at the home, 5560 Dais Road in Rembert.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

ALBERT MOORE
Albert Moore, 80, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends at the home, 130 Shannon Ave., and at the home of his daughter, Sandra “Pat” Wells, 301 Bowman Drive. Services will be announced by Community Funeral Home.

JOSEPH B. BAILEY
MULLINS — Mr. Joseph Boyd “J.B.” Bailey, 77, widower of Margaret Ward Bailey, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Marion County Medical Center after an illness.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Macedonia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Frey officiating. Burial will follow in Cedardale Cemetery, directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home.
Mr. Bailey was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Darlington County, a son of the late Boyd P. and May Hutchinson Bailey. Mr. Bailey was a retired truck driver. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served during World War II. Mr. Bailey was a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Macedonia United Methodist Men and he assisted with the church tape ministry.
Surviving Mr. Bailey are his children, Joe Bailey Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Oswego, Delores B. Osborne and her husband, Bill, of Lincolnton, N.C., Cecelia B. Bass and her husband, Walter, of Garner, N.C., and Paul C. Bailey of Mullins; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ralph Bailey and Richard Bailey, both of Darlington; and a sister, Beaufort B. Bazen of Florence.
Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by a daughter, Cindy B. Butler; and a brother, Thomas G. Bailey.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Pee Dee, 555 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506, or to Macedonia United Methodist Church, 402 N. Main St., Mullins, SC 29574.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Cox-Collins Funeral Home, 715 S. Main St., Mullins.

SHERLENE B. NEWMAN
MANNING — Sherlene Berry Newman, 68, widow of Samuel Myles Newman Sr., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, in Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born April 10, 1934, in Greenwood, she was a daughter of the late Robert George and Edna Tobias Berry. She was a retired nursing assistant and a member of The Presbyterian Church at Manning.
Surviving are two sons, Samuel “Myles” Newman Jr. and wife, Libby, of Gilbert and Gerald “Todd” Newman of Manning; two daughters, Lisa N. Blend and husband, Craig, of Manning and Janet Newman of Columbia; five grandchildren, Leigh Newman, Katie Newman, Jon Myles Newman, Paige Blend and Sam Blend; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Concord Presbyterian Church in Sumter County. The Rev. Dr. William J. Holmes will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends this evening at the residence, 424 Moye Drive, Manning.
Memorials may be made to The Presbyterian Church at Manning, P. O. Box 207, Manning, SC 29102.

GRACIE L. FLOWERS
MANNING — Gracie L. Flowers, 89, widow of James Lee Flowers Sr., died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Lexington.
Born in the Woods Bay community of Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John Thomas and Minnie Seegars Lemmon. Mrs. Flowers was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Manning for approximately 60 years and an active part of the TEL Sunday School Class and of the Friendship House.
Surviving are her son, James L. (Barbara) Flowers Jr. of Manning; daughter, Dianne (Dennis) Dahm of Lexington; grandchildren, James L. (Kathy) Flowers III of Lake City, Lana (Paul Glenn) Elliott of Mt. Pleasant, Ashley Dianne Cobb of Lexington, Jessica Lynn Flowers and Dana Marie Flowers of Manning; great-granddaughters, Taylor Leigh Flowers of Lake City and Ava Grace Elliott of Mt. Pleasant. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Wayne Flowers of Manning; and a granddaughter, Melanie Grace Elliott of Manning.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Dr. Paul Sullivan will officiate. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Kenneth Beatson, Tommy Gamble, Willie Anas, Dickey Hodge, Pete Bradham and Larry Williamson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence, 99 Meadow Drive, Manning.
Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102, or to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.

PEGGY R. FRASER
BISHOPVILLE — Peggy R. Fraser, 59, wife of Hugh M. Fraser and the late James E. Tyler, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.
Born Sept. 10, 1943, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Jesse Baker and the late Audrey Kinlaw Baker. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church.
Surviving besides her husband of Sumter are two daughters, Melissa Wilson and her husband, Raymond, of Bishopville and Janet Brown and her husband, Carroll, of Mayesville; a grandchild, Kayla Marie Brown; two sisters, Carol Christmas of Sumter and Joann Rabon of Ashwood; a brother, J.W. Baker of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dorohy Baker, Doris McGuirt and Bobbie Jean Holloman.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T.W. Mitchell and the Rev. Gene Stokes officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Baptist Church Cemetery, Camden Highway.
Pallbearers will be Gene Holloman, Tony Christmas, Truitt McNair, Gill Christmas, Wayne Rucker and Jay Baker.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at 1655 Raccoon Road, Mayesville.
Memorials may be made to the Hospitality House, 2435 Forest Drive, Columbia, SC 29204 c/o the pastoral care office.

MARVELL W. GOZA
Marvell W. “Blue Eyes” Goza, 96, widow of Eric Chess Goza, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Mayesville, she was a daughter of the late Henry Weinberg and the late Ulrica Lohse Weinberg. Mrs. Goza was a graduate of Goucher College and was a farmer.
Surviving are a son, E. Henry Goza and wife, Sandra Blackwell, of Mayesville; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a niece and a nephew.
She was preceded in death by a brother, U.V. Weinberg; a sister, Carmel Weinberg; and a stepdaughter, Margarett G. White.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Abraham Temoney officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of her son, 3410 Florence Highway.
Memorials may be made to the Dr. Robert Beatty Scholarship Fund, in care of Heath Hoover, 1935 Sans Souci Road, Sumter, SC 29153, or to Beulah AME Church Building Fund, 3175 Florence Highway, Mayesville, SC 29104.

GENEVA BALLARD
Geneva “Boot” Ballard, 82, died Monday, April 7, 2003, at Carolina Pines Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 21, 1920, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late John Bracey and Marie Carpenter Evans.
The family will receive friends at the home, 701 S. Main St.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

CLAUDIA WITHINGTON
JOHNS ISLAND — Claudia Withington entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, April 8, 2003. She was the wife of James K. Withington Sr. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. James Withington are invited to attend the funeral services of the latter in St. John’s Episcopal Church at 1 p.m. Friday. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may call J. Henry Stuhr Inc., West Ashley Chapel in Charleston from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.
Mrs. Withington was born Oct. 31, 1926, in Sumter. She was a daughter of Van M. Richardson and Ruth Brown Richardson. She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church.
Surviving are two sons, James “Jay” K. Withington of Charleston and Ralph Allen Withington of Johns Island; two daughters, Brenda Roth of Phoenix, Ariz., and Vicki Eslick of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, Van M. Richardson Jr. of Eautawville; 15 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

EASTER MAE LADSON
Easter Mae Ladson, 38, died Tuesday, April 8, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born March 5, 1965, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Easter Green Ladson and the late Frank Ladson.
The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, 81 Friendship Apt.
Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary Inc.

LEONARD ADGER Sr.
MANNING — Leonard Adger Sr., 52, died Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born July 7, 1950, in Clarendon County, he was a son of Elizabeth Ludd Adger and the late Sylvester Adger Sr. He was employed by the Sunbeam Corporation for 16 years and later employed by Yusa/EnerSys for another 16 years. He was an avid lover of music and sang with several gospel groups to include the Bright Stars of Manning, Junior Wells and the Gospel Stars, along with Frankie Smalls and the Soul Searchers, both of Sumter. He was previously married to Roxena Dukes Adger of Sumter.
Survivors include three sons, Leonard (Lori) Adger Jr. of Douglasville, Ga., Christopher W. Adger of Atlanta and Derrick A. Adger of Sumter; four brothers, Franklin Adger of NaShua, N.H., Rev. John Earl (Juanita) Adger and Sylvester Adger Jr., all of Sumter, and Jerome Adger of Manning; five sisters, Minnie Ross Thomas and Sarah A. (Randy) Law, all of Sumter, Barbara T. Adger of Augusta, Ga., and Betty J. Lyons and Melissa Adger, both of Manning; three grandchildren, Leonard Adger III, Lamar Adger and Lorenzo Adger; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James LeGrant and Joseph Adger; and a sister, Evelyn Adger.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark Baptist Church in Silver with the Rev. W.J. Chandler officiating, assisted by the Rev. J.H. Pringle.
The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m.
The family will receive friends at the home, 9261 Paxville Highway in Manning.
