MOSES HAMLIN Jr.
DARLINGTON — Homegoing service for the Rev. Moses Hamlin Jr. will be Monday at 2 p.m. at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, 400 Main St., Darlington, with the Rev. Robert A. Brown, pastor of Mount Zion AME Church, N.Y.C., officiating. Interment to follow at Snow Hill Cemetery in Florence directed by Jordan Funeral Home.
Rev. Hamlin passed away Wednesday, July 30, 2003, in a Florence hospital, after a brief illness.
Rev. Hamlin leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, Mrs. Edna Mae Hamlin, of 52 years; four daughters, Mary L. (Jackie) Washington of Brooklyn, N.Y., Ella Hamlin of Florence, Diana Hamlin of Charlotte, N.C., and Sharon (Timothy) Dixon of Columbia; four brothers, Leroy Hamlin and James (Ada) Hamlin Sr., all of Darlington, Benjamin (Robesina) Hamlin Sr. of Baltimore, Md., and Rufus (Beverly) Hamlin of Lexington, N.C.; five sisters, Irene Smoot, Bertha Bristow, Lillie M. Wingate and Ethel Gardner, all of Darlington, Fosteen (Leroy) Benton of Winston Salem, N.C.; three aunts; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Edward Harris (Pat) of Hartsville and Henry Harris (Willette); one sister-in-law, Rosabelle Smith of Indianapolis, Ill.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Elizabeth Daney.
A song and celebration for Rev. Moses Hamlin Jr. will be Sunday at 4 p.m. at St. John AME Church, 520 S. Main St., Bishopville.
The family is receiving friends at the family home, 4500 Hoffmeyer Road, Darlington.

NETTIE O. PLAYER
BISHOPVILLE — Nettie Osborn Player, 97, widow of William W. Player, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Hilton Head Regional Medical Center.
Born in Verdon, S.D., she was a daughter of the late Charles W. Osborn and the late Jennie Clark Osborn.
Mrs. Player was a graduate of Arizona State Teachers College and formerly taught school in New Mexico. She was a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church where she served as a former Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of The Elliott Garden Club.
Survivors include a son, Dale W. Player and his wife, Gail, of Bishopville; a daughter, Maxine P. Blakely and her husband, Ed, of Bluffton; grandchildren, Jennie P. Lambe and her husband, Scott, Whit Player and his wife, Beth, Weber Player and his wife, Molly, Tom Player, Ward Blakely, and Clark Blakely; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday in the St. Luke Cemetery, S.C. 341, with the Rev. Jim Ridenhour officiating.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Sunday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home and other times at the home of Dale and Gail Player, 219 Baskin Ave., Bishopville.
Memorials may be made to St. Luke United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Mollie Moore, 60 Bradley Road, Bishopville, S.C. 29010.
Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of arrangements.

PATRICIA A. BROOKS
Patricia Ann Brooks, 42, wife of Joseph Brooks, died July 31, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born May 13, 1961, in Sumter, she was a daughter of Charlie and Elizabeth Bradford Hunter.
Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

MARGARET GERTRUDE TIMMONS SIMS
Margaret “Maggie” Gertrude Timmons Sims, 87, widow of Eugene H. Sims, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at a local nursing center.
Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William Timothy Timmons and the late Eunice Hodge Timmons.
Mrs. Sims was a member of Sumter Bible Church and was retired from Rowe’s Drug Store.
Surviving are two sons, Harvey J. Sims and Wayne T. Sims, both of Sumter; a sister, Lucile Barnes of Sumter; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Robert E. Sims and James H. Sims.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. James Houtz officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Hyatt, Herbert Hudson, William Barnes, Harvin Barnes, Wayne Sims Jr. and Nelson Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

EMMA L. SCHULMAN
DALZELL — Emma L. Schulman, 80, wife of Irving Schulman died Friday, August 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Services will be announced by the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

David John Roche, 42, husband of Anne S. Roche, died Friday, August 1, 2003.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

CARO LEIGH JACKSON McELVEEN
Caro Leigh Jackson McElveen, 94, died Friday, August 1, 2003, at Covenant Place.
Born in Davis Station, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Elwin Morgan Watt and the late Gertrude Ridgill Watt.
Mrs. McElveen was married twice, first to the late Beecher Bryant Jackson and later to the late Edward McElveen.
Surviving are a son, Kirby B. Jackson of Anniston, Alabama; a daughter, Rose Ellen Davies of Austin, Texas; three brothers, John Allen Watt, Thomas D. Watt and E. M. Watt all of Sumter; six sisters, Vera Stokes Bradham, Edna Touchberry, Gertrude Benbow, Marguerite Huggins, Roberta Singleton and Tona Chandler all of Sumter; a step-sister, Iris Mills of Mayesville; three step-brothers, William Singleton of Sumter, Frank Singleton of Chapin and Bobby Singleton of Kentucky; four grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Clyde Watt Hook and Wylma Watt Ridgeway.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Jack Whitehead officiating.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Bible Fellowship Church, 227 Broad Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

QUEEN ESTHER SPRY MITCHELL
MANNING — Queen Esther Spry Mitchell, 72, wife of John H. Mitchell, died Aug. 2, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
She was born May 10, 1931, in the Foreston community of Clarendon County the daughter of the late Henry Spry Sr. and Hattie Simon Spry.
The family will receive friends at the home, 1291 Crossroad Church Road, Manning.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

DAVID JOHN ROCHE
David John Roche, 42, husband of Ann S. Roche, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003.
Born in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of Genieveve Roche and the late Leo A. Roche.
He was the owner and operator of Leo’s Wings and was a member of the Sumter Elks Lodge.
Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include his mother of Camden; two daughters, Laura Roche and Christian Roche, both of the home; a brother, Richard Roche of Kent, Wash.; a sister, Susan Bishop of Lancaster; his mother-in-law, Isobel S. Stewart of Sumter; his father-in-law, Harold W. Stewart and his wife, Shirley W. Stewart, of Sumter, his brother-in-law, Johnathan W. Stewart and his wife, Susan D. Stewart, of Florida.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Bordeaux officiating.
Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
Members of the Sumter Elks Lodge will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.

EMMA L. SCHULMAN
DALZELL — Emma L. Schulman, 80, wife of Irving Schulman, died Friday, Aug. 1, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Dillon County, she was a daughter of the late Hamp Rogers and the late Lonnie Mae Grantham Rogers.
Mrs. Schulman attended the Sumter Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Surviving are her husband of Dalzell; a son, Michael R. Schulman of Newton, Kan.; a grandson, Thomas Murphy of Newton; a niece, Alice Hilburn; five nephews, Frankie, Johnny, Roy, Doug and Donny Dew.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with Pastor Glen Garver officiating.
Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today and noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

ETHEL MAE BLACKWELL GARNER
MANNING — Ethel Mae Blackwell Garner, 62, wife of Eli Garner, died Saturday night, Aug. 2, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital.
She was born Dec. 17, 1940, in Manning the daughter of the late Roddie Blackwell and Ruth Bullock Blackwell.
Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.

ALICE E. RAGIN
SUMMERTON — Alice E. Ragin, 86, widow of Robert Ragin, died Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital, Manning.
Born Feb. 10, 1917, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Ishmell and Eleanor Green.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2878 Liberty Hill Road, St. Paul community, Summerton.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

COLUMBIA — Kayla Moenay Lyles died Monday, July 28, 2003, at Palmetto-Richland Hospital, Columbia.
Born Monday, July 28, 2003, in Columbia, she was a daughter of Kevin Lamont Lyles and Karen Harvin.
Survivors besides her parents, Karen M. Harvin of Columbia and Kevin L. Lyles of Columbia, include her grandparents, Alexander Harvin of Bronx, N.Y., Beulah McDuffie Gaillard of Pineville, Adell M. Jones of Columbia, Lewis Foster of Columbia; great-grandparents, Hattie Harvin of Manning and Bernice Lyles of Columbia; two brothers, Xzavion Wesley of Columbia and Jacob Lyles of Columbia; and an adopted grandfather, Frank Allen.
Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zero Baptist Church with Elder Thomas Davis officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Zero Baptist Church Cemetery.
