Madlyn Bachus Welsh 92, wife of Rowland Murray Welsh, died Tuesday, August 19, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Poplar Bluff, Missouri, she was a daughter of the late Cornelius Wynard Bachus and the late Alice Ann Horlacher Bachus.
Mrs. Welsh was a member of St. John United Methodist Church and a retired beautician.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; a son, Ronald Murray Welsh of Sumter; a daughter, Linda Ann Welsh Lyons of Sumter; a sister, Maxine Steere of Wichita Falls, Texas; 4 grandchildren, Christia L. Burgess, F. Brent Lyons, Laura Welsh, and Sherry Welsh; and 2 great-grandchildren, Brianna Lyons and Brooke Lyons.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Wynard Bachus.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. LaRue Cook and Rev. Ron Richardson officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 2354 Addison Drive.
Memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church, 136 Poinsett Drive, Sumter, S. C. 29150 or to Bondovlove Baptist Church, 2755 Carter Road, Sumter, S. C. 29150.

Alma J. Avin
1908-2003
Pinewood, S. C.
Alma Lola Johnson Avin, 95, died Wednesday, August 20, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Pinewood, she was a daughter of the late Willie Blanding Johnson and the late Rosa Galloway Johnson.
Mrs. Avin was the oldest member of Pinewood Baptist Church and was a member of the Fidellis Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Young At Heart Senior Citizen Club.
Surviving are four sons, Marshall L. “Roy” Avin and wife Lucille of Manning, William LeGrand Avin of Collinsville, Va., Charles “Buddy” Avin and wife Mildred of Pinewood, and Kenneth A. Avin of Sumter; two daughters, Bessie A. McLeod and husband Cody of Pinewood and Joyce A. French of Portage, Pa.; a sister, Ruby Newton of Florida; 69 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by 2 daughters, Mildred Timmons and Juanita Richmond and 11 brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday at Pinewood Baptist Church with Rev. Bennie Barwick officiating.
Burial will be in the Pinewood Cemetery.
Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.
Great-grandchildren will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Saturday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of Buddy Avin, 4930 Pinewood Road and at the home of Bessie McLeod, 3910 Cody Road.
Memorials may be made to the Pinewood Baptist Church Bus Fund, 10 E. Fulton Street, Pinewood, S. C. 29125.

LaRue G. Tranter
1908-2003
Sumter, S. C.
LaRue Grooms Tranter, 94, died Friday, August 22, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Effingham, she was a daughter of the late Silas Grooms and the late Eva Lee Grooms.
Mrs. Tranter was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church.
She was twice married, first to the late Thomas Moody Ward and later to the late Rolland C. Tranter.
Surviving are two sons, Thomas M. “Tom” Ward, Jr. and wife Frances of Sumter and John Phillip Ward and wife Patsy of Roanoke, Va.; a daughter, Mary Dell May and husband John of Toms River, New Jersey; two sisters, Lovy Leach of Lake City and Wilma Poston of Denmark; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Eva Lee Fulford; three sisters, Ivanell Phillips, Eddie Stewart and Myrtie Mixon.
Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Sunday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Charles Clanton officiating.
The family will receive friends at the home of son, 3030 Joyce Street.
Memorials may be made to Crosswell Baptist Church, 604 Mathis Street, Sumter, S. C. 29150.

Annie Poole
1930-2003
Gable, S.C.
Annie Allene Poole, 72, of Gable, SC, died Sunday, August 23, 2003 at Mariner Health Care West.
Born in Lee County, Ms. Poole was the daughter of the late R. Leighton Poole and the late Carrie Logan Poole. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church and attended Lewis Chapel.
Surviving are three sisters, Virginia Johnson of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, Elizabeth Wright of Nashville, Tennessee, and Shirley Peebles of Gable, SC; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 3:00 pm Tuesday in the chapel of the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Reverend Jerry Watson officiating. Interment will follow in Wells Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral home and at other times at the home of Shirley Peebles, 4995 E. Brewington Rd., Gable, SC.
Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Bernice C. Stephens
1915-2003

Bernice C. Stephens, 87, widow of Vincent Stephens, Sr., died Saturday, August 23, 2003 at the Tuomey Healthcare System.
Born in Lee County she was a daughter of the late Willie Capell and Lonie Godwin Capell.
Mrs. Stephens was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Alcolu and was a retired Nurses Aide. Mrs. Stephens was a resident of Mariner West.
Surviving are four sons, James C. Caples, John Stephens, Vincent Stephens, Jr., Cary Stephens and his wife Sharon, all of Sumter; two daughters, Earline Tennant and her husband Thomas of Summerton and Judy Hershberger and her husband Henry Page of Sumter; one sister, Ada Dority of Sumter; a son-in-law, Robert Wingate of Sumter and a daughter-in-law, Brenda McKnight of Sumter; a special friend, Natalie DuBose of Sumter; 22 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two infant sons and a sister, Grace Yarborough, two brothers, Jessie Capell and Lawrence Capell.
Funeral Services will be held at 4 PM Tuesday at the Church of God of Prophecy in Sumter with the Rev. Raymond Barfield officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 PM Monday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 20 Inglewood Dr.
Memorials may be made to the Church of God of Prophecy, PO Box 1322, Manning, S.C. 29102.
Grandsons will serve as Pallbearers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the Staff of Mariner West.

C.R. Vanden Heuvel, Sr.
1923-2003

Carl R. “C.R. Van, Sr.” Van den Heuvel, 79, widower of Margaret Ann McNulty Van den Heuvel, died Monday, August 25, 2003 at his home.
Born in Beemerville, New Jersey, he was a son of the late William Peter Van den Heuvel and the late Sadie Ayers Van den Heuvel.
Mr. Van den Heuvel was a member of Liberty Hill Presbyterian Church and attended St. John United Methodist Church in Sumter. He was retired owner and operator of C. R. Van Paint Company.
Surviving are one son, Carl R. “C.R.” Van den Heuvel, Jr. and wife Mary of Sumter; two daughters, Peggy Geddings and husband Norman of Sumter, Pat Merrell and husband Tom of Myrtle Beach; a sister-in-law, Helen Van den Heuvel of New Jersey; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. LaRue Cook and Rev. Dr. Eugene Rollins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Claudia Harrelson Russell, 87, wife of Thomas William “Tom” Russell, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at Tuomey Healthcare System.
Born in the Oak Grove Community of Georgetown County, she was the daughter of the late Cleveland “Clevie” Harrelson and the late Esther Porter Harrelson.
Mrs. Russell was a member of Harmony Church and was a graduate of Andrews High School and attended two years of college in Charleston.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; two daughters, Anne R. Norris and husband, Rev. Robert A. ( Bob) of Florence and Elizabeth R. Goodwin of Columbia; two brothers, Jack Harrelson and wife, Grace of Florence and Reuben Harrelson and wife Betty of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three sisters, Marian Gambrell of Brunson, Georgia, Frances Napier of Summerville, S.C., and Rachel Stearns and husband, Irving of Georgetown, S.C.; seven grandchildren, Robbie Norris, Jeff Norris, Todd Norris, Josh Goodwin, Amanda Thorne Suber, Tae Russell Laney and Tom Russell, III; and two great-grandchildren, Sullivan and Cole Norris.
She was preceded in death by a son, Thomas William “Tommy” Russell, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Thursday at Harmony Church with the Rev. Bob Norris officiating and Rev. Drew Choate officiating..
Burial will be in the Sumter Cemetery.
Grandsons and Michael Laney and Johnathan Suber will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and also following the graveside services.

Heppie Respess Hill, 84, widow of Luther Martin Hill, died Saturday, August 23, 2003 at a local nursing facility.
Born in Pike Road, N.C. she was a daughter of the late Arthur Respess and Mary Ellen Cutler Respess.
Mrs. Hill was a member of the Rivermont Church of Christ in Chester, Va.
Surviving are one son, Martin R. Hill of Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Wanda Rohrer of Miami, Fla. and Cynthia H. Jolly of Sumter; three sisters and four grandchildren.
Graveside Services will be held Chester, Va.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, S.C., 29210.

Bernice M Hoffpauir
1928-2003
Sumter, S. C.
Bernice M. Hoffpauir, 74, died Tuesday, August 26, 2003 at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Waco, Texas, she was a daughter of the late Lloyd S. Blackmon, Sr. and the late Marie Mitten Blackmon.
Mrs. Hoffpauir was a member of Shaw Heights Baptist Church where she had previously served as a GA Director and member of the choir. She also founded the church library and served as its Media Director for 25 years. She was a retired Chief Telephone Operator for the 2020 Communications Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base. She was chosen as Regional Outstanding Technical Employee in 1978 and the Technical Information Systems Division honored her as Chief Operator of the year in 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Terry S. Newman of Sumter; a son, Richard L. Hoffpauir of Lawton, Oklahoma; a brother, Lloyd S. Blackmon, Jr. of Oklahoma City, Ok.; two granddaughters, Shyra Marie Wilferd of Columbia and Jessica P. Wilson of Sumter; two great-grandsons, J. Bailey Wilferd of Columbia and G. Hunter Wilson of Sumter.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Guy Courtney Jones.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. Saturday at Alice Drive Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Clay Smith officiating.
Burial will be in Zoar Community Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of her daughter, 600 N. Magnolia Street.

Ralph "Hank" Wilson
1922-2003
Sumter, S. C.
Ralph Holmes “Hank” Wilson, 80, widower of Ruth “Peggy” Rivers Wilson, died Wednesday, August 27, 2003 at a local nursing center.
Born in Florence, he was the son of the late Harold “Mack” McIver Wilson and the late Emmie Haynie Wilson.
He was a lifelong resident of Sumter. He was a graduate of Sumter High School and was very active in high school sports and was received into the Sumter Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. At the beginning of World War II, he enlisted in the Navy, served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Essex for 30 months until the war ended in August 1945. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion Post #15, a life member of VFW Post #3034, Sumter Elks Club #855, the Columbia/Sumter Hunting and Fishing Club and the Mt. Vernon Coffee Club.
He retired in 1990 from Rivers-Wilson Appliance and Furniture Company having been in operation for 32 years.
Surviving are two sisters, Julia Wilson Fennell of Oswego and Mary Wilson Beckham of Columbia; two nieces, Cathy M. McElhaney of Oswego and Becky Moran of Charleston; three nephews, Haynie Beckham of Columbia, Rocky Rivers of Columbia and Mark Rivers of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bruz and Celeste Rivers of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Haynie M. Wilson
Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday in the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Phil Jones officiating.
The family will receive friends from 5 to7 P.M. Thursday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 226 W. Liberty St., Sumter, S. C. 29150 or to a charity of one’s choice.
