Ernest Lee Carter, 67, husband of Margaret Ann McLeod Carter, died this morning, June 12, 2001, at his home. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

NORMAN G. ARDIS
MANNING — Norman Gunter Ardis, 71, husband of Margaret Alsbrook Ardis, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Nov. 28, 1929, in Pinewood, he was a son of the late Newell Legrand and Eva Broadway Ardis. He was a retired contractor, a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Manning First Baptist Church. Survivors besides his wife of Manning include a daughter, Sherry Evans and her husband, Donald, of Manning; a son, Glenn Ardis of Manning; a brother, Fred Ardis Sr. of Manning; a sister, Edith Singleton of Sumter; five grandchildren, Chase and Brooke Evans and Kristin, Brett and Breanna Ardis. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Newell, Vernon and Zane Ardis. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Manning First Baptist Church with Dr. David Anderson officiating, assisted by Dr. Paul Sullivan and the Rev. William L. Selman Jr. Burial will be in Clarendon Memorial Gardens. Marvin Alsbrook, Raymond Alsbrook, Bill Ellis, Billy Beatson, Harold Hodge and David Ardis will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and other times at the home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or Manning First Baptist Church. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

THOMAS A. ATKINSON SR.
Thomas A. Atkinson Sr., husband of Willie Mae Barfield Atkinson, died Monday, June 11, 2001, at a local nursing facility after an illness. Born May 23, 1915, near St. Charles, he was a son of the late Joe E. Atkinson Sr. and Lily Hussey Atkinson. He attended Lee County schools and Furman University. Mr. Atkinson was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church, where he was active as a lay speaker. He was a U.S. Air Force World War II veteran and served in England. He retired from Reeves Brothers, Turner Trucking Division after 35 years of employment, where he was manager of the shipping and receiving departments. He was known as “Mr. Tom.” Survivors besides his wife of 55 years include three sons, Allen Atkinson and his wife, Peggy, of Sumter, Clifton Atkinson of Florence, and the Rev. Michael Atkinson and his wife, Sherrie, of Summerville; a brother, Joe Atkinson Jr. and his wife, Betty, of St. Charles; a sister, Mary A. Barber of Columbia; a sister-in-law, Emma Lee Atkinson of Elliott; five grandchildren, Keith and his wife, Laura, Clif, Christopher, Elizabeth and Andrea; a great-granddaughter, Kayla; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Atkinson; and a sister, Julia A. Logan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Baptist Church with Dr. James R. Chandler, Dr. Thomas Painter and the Rev. William Taylor officiating. Burial will be in the family plot at Wells Cemetery in Elliott. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Deacons and members of the Adult Sunday School Department of Grace Baptist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home, 15 Saratoga St. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church Building Fund or to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

EDWARD I. BOWMAN
Edward Isaac Bowman, widower of Mattie Sanders Bowman, died Thursday, June 7, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 3, 1909, in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Edward and Christine Hammett Bowman. In his youth, he joined Second Presbyterian Church, becoming a deacon before joining Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church. Mr. Bowman was a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Army on active duty in Europe and India. He retired from Georgia-Pacific in 1972. Survivors include eight nephews, King David Singleton, Robert Singleton and William Brooks, all of Sumter, James E. Singleton of Hampton, Va., Solomon, Bobby and Marshall Brooks of New Haven, Conn., and Terry Sanders of Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; and a number of other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cassie Bowman. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday at Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church with Eugene Mason, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Willie Dupree, the Rev. Emma Thompson and Deacon Joseph Taylor. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. for viewing until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home of his nephew, King David Singleton, 1285 Tobacco Road. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

MAJ. GARY R. COLLINS
Maj. Gary R. Collins, U.S. Air Force retired, 62, husband of Jane Garber Collins, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia after an illness. Born Feb. 21, 1939, in Hartford City, Ind., he was a son of the late Hershel Cleo and Betty Marie Hanes Collins. He attended DePaul University, where he met his wife of St. Louis, Mo. He received a degree in political science in 1960. He entered the U.S. Air Force as a second lieutenant and remained on active duty until his retirement in 1980. He performed for and supported the Sumter Little Theatre and Shaw Air Force Base theaters, participated in church as a youth leader and member of the choir at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, refereed for the state high school basketball and football associations and YMCA youth leagues, and taught in Sumter area schools as a substitute teacher for many years. Survivors besides his wife of 41 years include a son, Kent R. Collins of Norfolk, Va.; a daughter, Leslie L. Mitchum of Sumter; a sister, Karen L. Thrine of Gaston, Ind.; three grandchildren, Nicholas and Patrick Allen of Norfolk and Taylor M. Mitchum of Sumter. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Stephanie Lynn Collins. Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church with Dr. Rev. Louis Jamison officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home on Nash Street. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to Central Carolina Technical College Scholarship Fund. Bullock Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ODELL A. DAVIS
FLORENCE — Odell A. Davis died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 26, 1942, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie R. Davis Sr. and Golden Thomas Davis. He attended Lee County public schools and was self-employed. Survivors include two brothers, Theodore Davis of Bishopville and Willie Rob Davis Jr. of Sumter; and three sisters, Georgia M. Davis and Frances M. Deberry, both of Columbia, and Lula M. Pearson of Philadelphia, Pa. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, William and Robert L. Davis. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., with the Rev. W.W. Thompson, pastor of Cedar Grove Baptist Church of Chester, officiating. Burial will be in Thomas Town Cemetery, Bishopville. The funeral procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home, 1340 Manville-St. Charles Road, Bishopville. The family will receive friends at the home. THOMAS C. DUKE JR.
Thomas “T.C.” Cleveland Duke Jr., 82, husband of Mildred “Millie” Henderson Duke, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Williamsburg County, he was a son of the late Thomas Cleveland Duke Sr. and Evelyn Graham Duke. He was a retired insurance agent and a member of the VFW Post 3034. He was a World War II U.S. Army sergeant, having served in the European and Pacific theaters under Gen. George Patton of Company 813. He also served in Normandy on D-Day and in Africa and Europe. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Thomas “Tommy” C. Duke III and Daniel “Danny” G. Duke and his wife, Vivian, all of Charlotte, N.C., and James “Jimmy” G. Duke and his wife, Bobbie, of Fayetteville, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Bea Purvis and her husband, David, Sara Largent and her husband, Sam, and Tara Conyers and her husband, Gerald, all of Sumter; a brother, Curtis Duke of Andrews; a sister, Kaye Duke Honeycutt of Simpsonville; four grandchildren, Erin, J.T., Amy and Cody Duke; 17 stepgrandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Burch and Eric Duke; and a sister, Martha Evelyn Duke Jacks. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Morris officiating, assisted by the Rev. Jim Holley. Burial will be in Cedar Swamp United Methodist Church cemetery in Kingstree. Ryan Conyers, Gerald Conyers, J.T. Duke, Gregg Honeycutt, Keith Duke, Graham Duke and Bryan Honeycutt will serve as pallbearers. Allen Henderson, David Purvis, Sam Largent, David Duke, Billy Epps, Robert Bell, L.L. Gore, Dr. Dave Whaley, Dr. Clayton Lowder, members of the VFW Post 3034 and the veterans of Company 813 will serve as honorary pallbearers. Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, Boulevard Church of the Nazarene, Waynick Drive, or the Northside Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, North Main Street. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home on Boulevard Road. RONALD GEORGE
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Ronald “Brother” George died Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Woodhull Hospital. Born Jan. 18, 1964, he was a son of Joretta George Wells and the late John Wesley Wells. In his youth, he attended Morris Chapel Baptist Church. A 1982 graduate of Furman High School with a trade in auto mechanic technology, Mr. George was employed by Tim Hastie’s Service Station. In May 1983, he relocated to New York, N.Y., living with his uncle, aunt and cousin, who adopted him. He quickly learned how to navigate the mass transit system. Employed as a security guard, he was promoted to supervisor of the security department at Baruch College. Simultaneously, he was employed by the WIC Group of Companies. At the time of his death, Mr. George was employed by the GSA Contracting Firm, helping to build a new federal courthouse in Brooklyn. Survivors besides his mother include a son, Rodrick McKenny of Sumter, S.C; two daughters, Rasheeda Kennedy and Chevon Vossar, both of Brooklyn; four sisters, Blondell McElveen, Valerie Moore-Germany, Cassandra Richardson and Theresa McFaddin; his grandmother, Lettie Bethea George of Sumter; his companion, Henrietta Taylor; and a special friend, Sharon Kennedy. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Josh and Rosa Wells; his maternal grandfather, Manning George; and four uncles. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter with the Rev. Marion H. Newton, pastor, officiating, assisted by Minister Ricky Simmons, Pastor Alexander Nathaniel, Minister Ronnie McElveen and Pastor Kenny Rose. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Sumter. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. The funeral procession will leave at 1:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, 10 Lakeside Drive, Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother. Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

REV. TURA R. GLOVER
COLUMBIA — The Rev. Tura Rebecca Glover, 95, died Friday, June 8, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 19, 1905, in Greenwood County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Charles G. and Esther Massey Glover. She attended Abbeville County public schools and completed her education at State A & M College, now South Carolina State University. She taught in Abbeville and Saluda counties until her retirement. She was the first ordained itinerant elder in the Seventh Episcopal District of the AME Church under the leadership of Bishop Reid. She served as an evangelist in the Piedmont conference. Survivors include a brother, the Rev. Dr. Benjamin J. Glover of Columbia; and two sisters, Esther Glover Miller of Youngstown, Ohio, and Willie Mae Glover-Goode. Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. today at Mt. Zion AME Church, Greenwood, with the Rev. James E. Speed Sr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Henderson N. Lowden, the Rev. Raymond Goleman III and Dr. G.T. Devlin Sr. Burial was in the church cemetery. ELLIHUE IRICK
Ellihue Irick Sr., 73, husband of Maisie Graham Irick, died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at his home. Born in Greeleyville, he was a son of the late Forman Ulysses Irick Sr. and Mary Shuler Irick. Mr. Irick was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God Church and retired from Sumter Dairies with 40 years of service. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. Survivors include his wife of Sumter; four sons, Phil Irick, Ricky Irick, Sr. and Ellihue Irick Jr., all of Sumter, and Mark Daniel Irick of Fountain Inn; a daughter, Brenda Gail Buck of Orlando, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Green Acres Assembly of God Church with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. B.B. Graham, Phil Irick Sr., Phil Irick Jr., Ricky Irick Sr., Ricky Irick Jr. and David Collins will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Adult Sunday School Class of Green Acres Assembly of God Church will serve as honorary pallbearers. GLORIA BROWN
Gloria Brown, widow of George R. Brown Jr., died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at the McCoy Nursing Center in Bishopville. Born July 11, 1910, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Samuel C. Ragins and Priscella Richardson Ragins. She was a former member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal in Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home of her sister, Millicent Hampton, 2875 S. Gate Drive. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. of Sumter.

WILSON BUTLER
Wilson Butler, husband of Jeanette Spann Butler, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born March 24, 1918, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joe and Anna Mickens Butler. The family will receive friends at the home, 1444 E. Liberty St. Ext. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. of Sumter.

BISHOPVILLE — Andrew “Andy” Murphy died Monday, June 11, 2001, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. Born June 30, 1945, in Bishopville, he was a son of Olivia Getten Murphy and the late Boyd Murphy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. John AME Church with the Rev. Moses Hamlin Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Boatwright Funeral Home, Bishopville. Ernest L. Carter, 68, husband of Margaret McLeod Carter, died Tuesday, June 12, 2001, at his home. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Brown C. and Viola Mitchum Carter. Mr. Carter attended Green Acres Assembly of God Church. He retired with 27 years of civil service as the plant operator for the Water and Sanitation Department at Shaw Air Force Base. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a daughter, Wendy L. Griffin and her husband, Chris, of Sumter; a son, Ernest L. “Nick” Carter and his wife, Sharon, of Sumter; two sisters, Delma Teplin of Columbia and Inez Grooms of Sumter; a brother, Leroy Carter of Manning; a special brother, Floyd Etheridge of Sumter; two grandsons, Clayton and Kevin Carter; a granddaughter, Sherry Phillips; four stepgrandsons, Heath and Dane Griffin and Shane and Bryan Huff; and three great-grandsons, Matt, Chad and Michael Phillips. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Buddy Griffith and the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. Robert David Frierson, husband of Mary Kay, died Monday, June 11, 2001. Born March 13, 1927, he was a son of the late Rev. W.O. Frierson and Lessie Lee Poston Frierson. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, David R. and his wife, Shari, of Chatham, Ohio, Donnie of Atlanta, Ga., and Danny Herring and his wife, Sherry, of Atlanta; two daughters, Rhonda Herring of Atlanta and Debbie Brooks and her husband, Robert, of Brunswick, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, John Q. Frierson and his wife, Cindy, Robyn A. Steward, and her husband, Jason, Dan Herring and his wife, Lynn, Nikki Vojtus and her husband, Joe, Jason Sterrett and his wife, Jackie, Joseph Korzan, Matthew Steven, Andrew Herring and Sarah and Anthony Brooks; 10 great-grandchildren, Cayla and Keyan Frierson, Sierra and Alannah Herring, Adam and Alec Steward, Cassendra and Kristina Sterrett and Dominic and Madison Vojtus; two brothers, Onnie Lee and his wife, Jean, of Arizona and J.D. Frierson and his wife, Doris, of South Carolina; three sisters, Sadie Timmons and her husband, Willie, Roberta Pratt of West Virginia and Patsy Carr and her husband, Mickey, of South Carolina; a sister-in-law, Sara Jane; and a niece, May. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Bobby Jean Frierson, Scott Harvin Frierson, Jessie Frierson and Odell; an infant sibling; and a granddaughter, Michelle Lynn Frierson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Free Will Baptist Church, 2226 W. 91st St., Cleveland. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at Craciun Funeral Home, 14925 E. Bagley Road at Pearl, Middleburg Heights, Ohio.
