Robert Mason Nettles
1914-2004
Robert Mason Nettles, 90, husband of Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles, died Monday, October 25, 2004 at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born April 29,1914, in Wedgefield, he was a son of the late Elias Whilden Nettles and Lucy Mellette Nettles.He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, where he served as a deacon and elder.
Mr. Nettles was twice married, first to the late Roland Tucker Nettles, then to Marjorie Brunk Phillips Nettles.
He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Sumter, where he served as a deacon and elder. Mr. Nettles had a life-long relationship with Nu-Idea School Supply Company, a family owned business founded by his father-in-law, Roy H. Tucker. In 1989, he retired as President and CEO. Mr. Nettles received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the school and church equipment business, including, several times, South Carolina and North Carolina representative to the National School Supply Institute. He served on boards of manufacturers of school desks of church pews and equipment in South Carolina, North Carolina and Texas.
Mr. Nettles served as a member of the YMCA Board, Salvation Army Board, Sumter County Development Board, Sumter Committee for Progress, Sumter-Shaw-Lee Area Boy Scout Board, Sumter Area Chamber of Commerce and the Sumter Rotary Club.
Mr. Nettles was a past member of the Brohun Lake Club, Couples Dinner Club, and charter member of the Cotillion Club. He was also a member of First Families of South Carolina and the Huguenot Society.
Mr. Nettles is survived by his wife of Sumter; 2 sons, Robert Mason Nettles, Jr. of Awendaw and Tucker Whilden Nettles of Pawleys Island; 3 daughters, Roland Nettles Moise of Dallas, Texas and Mary Louise Nettles Dalton of Bassett, Virginia and Nancy Lee Nettles Woodward of Sumter; 3 step–daughters, Carol Phillips Kirven of Sumter, Patricia Phillips McEwen of Rochester, N.Y. and Virginia Phillips Nasipak of Del Ray, Fla.; 2 sisters, Margaret Nettles Crumpton of Sumter, Eliza Ann Nettles Wessinger of Columbia; 16 grandchildren ; 11 great-grandchildren; Numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Elias Whilden Nettles, Jr., and a sister, Louise Nettles McLaurin.
Funeral Services will be held at 2PMWednesday at the First Presbyterian Church with the Dr. William Painter and Dr. Zane Moore officiating.
Burial will follow in the Wedgefield Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
His eight grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Tuesday at the Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

Dr. Rafael William Luebbert
1965-2005
Dr. Rafael William Luebbert, 39, husband of Catherine Elizabeth Gordon Luebbert died Thursday, February 10, 2005.
Born in San Antonio, Texas, he was the son of Rafael C. Luebbert and Dr. Gayle R. Owens.
Dr. Luebbert was a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and the Galveston Medical School. He served his residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and Palmetto Richland Hospital in Columbia. He was a family practitioner with Palmetto Family Practice.
Surviving besides his wife of the home are his father of San Antonio Texas; his mother of Austin, Texas; two daughters, Macie Elizabeth Luebbert and Mary Ellis Luebbert of the home; a sister, Kelly Wood and her husband Jason of Jackson, Ga ; maternal grandmother, Phyllis Owens of Austin, Texas and his parents in law, Dan and Jean Johnson of Monroe, NC.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Sunday in the First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Zane Moore, Rev. Josie Holler and Mr. Gregg Martin officiating.
Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bill K. Floyd, Paul Schumacher, Dr. Scott Dilts, Dr. John Fleming, Brian Benenhaley and Scott McLendon.
Honorary pallbearers will be Luke, Jake and Kate Schumacher.
The family will receive friends at the home, 160 Tradd Circle.
Memorials may be made to the Tuomey Foundation, 115 North Main St., Sumter, SC 29150.

Mildred I. Shirley
1922-2005
Mildred I. Shirley, 82, formerly of Sumter, widow of Lee Roy Shirley, died Wednesday, February 16, 2005 in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.
Born in Camden, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late Columbus M. Mahaffey and the late Ila Williams Mahaffey.
Mrs. Shirley was formerly employed by Campbell Soup Company for 14 years. She attended Faith Church of the Nazarene in Mt.Vernon, Illinois.
Surviving are three daughters, Lee A. Osborn and husband Maxie of Mt. Vernon, Illinois; Sandra Jean Jarrell and Kathleen A. Geddings both of High Point, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Ralph, Wayne and Keith Nabors, Lynn Hayes, Stacy Jarrell, Robbie Jarrell, Michael Geddings, and Lisa Huskey; 16 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday in the Chapel of the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 12 Noon to 1:30 P.M. Saturday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.

Evelyn Coward Allen
1927-2005
Evelyn Coward Allen, 77, wife of Julian B. Allen, died Sunday, February 20, 2005 at her home.
Born in Ware Shoals, South Carolina, she was a daughter of the late David Lee Coward and the late Ruth Taylor Coward.
Mrs. Allen was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. She was a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Pharmacy and received her masters degree in Adult Education from the University of South Carolina. She was formerly employed by Sumter School District #17.
Surviving are her husband of Sumter; four daughters, Julie Allen of Sumter; Katie A. Hutchens and husband Dr. Thomas P. Hutchens of Bismarck, North Dakota, Beth A. Edwards of Sumter, and Janie A. Kirkland and husband Steve Kirkland of Chapin; six grandchildren, Lauren Edwards, Allen Edwards, Dan Hutchens, Elizabeth Hutchens, Sarah Talley and Will Talley.
Graveside services will be held at 3 P.M. Wednesday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Stephen Taylor officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Easter Seal Society, Cerebral Palsy Foundation, P. O. Box 128, Columbia, S. C. 29202-0128 or to Friends of the Library, in care of the Sumter County Library, 111 N. Harvin Street, Sumter, SC 29150.

Frances Grant Abbott
1944-2005
Frances Grant Abbott, 60, died Monday, February 21, 2005 at her home.
Born in Columbia, she was a daughter of the late John E. Grant and the late Frances McLaurin Grant.
Mrs. Abbott was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter and the League of Women Voters. She served as co-chairman during the formation of the Green House, home for troubled youth. She was a former teacher with Sumter School Districts Seventeen and Two, and Thomas Sumter Academy and was also formerly employed by Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance Company.
Surviving are a son, Dr. William Benjamin Abbott, III of Birmingham, Alabama; a daughter, Susan Abbott Butler and husband Joseph W. Butler of Sumter; two brothers, John E. Grant, Jr. of Columbia and Henry Grant of La Crescenta, California; and a grandchild, Joseph Collin Butler.
Private graveside services will be held at the Sumter Cemetery with Rev. Dr. Zane Moore officiating.
Memorials may be made to the United Way, 215 N. Washington Street, Sumter, S. C. 29150 or to the National Mental Health Association, 2001 N. Beauregard St., 12th Floor, Alexandria, Va. 22311.

LUTHER NASH JAMISON
Retired USAF Major Luther Nash Jamison Sr., 77, widower of Mary C. Jamison, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Covenant Place. Born in Shelbyville, Ky., he was a son of the late Henry A. and Nancy McDonald Jamison. He was drafted into the Army in 1943 and flew combat missions on B-24s over the skies of southern Europe as a ball turret gunner. He was awarded six Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the ETO Ribbon. Afterward, he attended OCS, completed pilot training in San Antonio, Texas, and attended the USAF Ground Electronics School, Air University Squadron Officers School and Communications and Electronics Staff Officers School. His last assignment was with the NSA at the Pentagon. He declined promotion to the rank of colonel and retired to Sumter after 22 years of service. He was a lifetime member of American Legion Post 15. He graduated from Bagdad High School in Bagdad, Ky., the University of Maryland, Blackstone School of Law, and Sumter Area Technical College. He was a member of Tau Epsilon Sigma Honor Society and honored in “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.” Survivors include three sons, Luther Nash Jamison II and Byron Carver Jamison, both of Sumter, and Dennis Garry Jamison of Columbia; one daughter, Pamela Jamison Reading of Sumter; three brothers, Martin M. Jamison, Edgar R. Jamison, and Julian Jamison, all of Kentucky; one sister, Shirley Dickerson of Kentucky; and 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie Fay Jamison; a brother, Harrison R. Jamison; and four sisters, Edith M. Jamison, Thelma Jamison, Lela L. Kelly and Alma “Christine” Turner. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter with the Rev. Mark Riggs officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors. Pallbearers will be grandsons Garry, Brian, Bobby, Nash, Ryan and Clayton Jamison. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home at 307 Adams Ave. Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

ESSIE L. BINNS WILDER
Essie L. Binns Wilder, 84, widow of James L. Wilder Jr., died Saturday, March 3, 2001. Born Sept. 19, 1916, in Atlanta, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Sallie Binns. The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Jason Wilder, at 1 Wingate Court. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

MARGARET GREGG BUTLER
Margaret Gregg Butler, 72, wife of Nathaniel Butler, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Sept. 20, 1928, in Sumter County, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Rosa Clark Gregg. The family will receive friends at the family home at 610 E. Liberty St. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc.

REV. BENJAMIN MOSES
COLUMBIA — The Rev. Benjamin Moses, 67, husband of Lillie Mae Davis Moses, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Hospital in Columbia. Born March 12, 1933, in Lee County, he was the son of the late Willie Moses Sr., and Lurene Samons Moses. The family will receive friends at the family home at 1026 Porter St. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home.

DOROTHY ‘DOT’ JOHNSON
COLUMBIA — Dorothy “Dot” Johnson, 36, widow of Kenneth “Kent” Johnson, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born March 22, 1964, in the Davis Crossroad community in Summerton, she was the daughter of Elizabeth McDonald Dingle and the late Roosevelt Dingle. The family will receive friends at the home of her mother, Elizabeth Dingle, at Route 1, Box 237, Rowe Drive in the Goat Island community of Summerton. Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

JAMES YORK
COLUMBIA — James York Sr., 73, husband of Flossie Mae White York, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia. Born in Sumter on March 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Pearson and Luvenia Hudson York. The family will receive friends at the family home at 534 Knightbridge Road in Sumter. Services will be announced by Job’s Mortuary.

REBECCA BRIGGS
Rebecca Briggs, 72, widow of the late Leroy Briggs, died Monday, February 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County on June 17, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Jerry and Fannie White Spears. She was a faithful and lifelong member of the Galilee Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities, including vice president of the Senior Choir, president of the Gospel Choir, adviser to the Adult Choir and the Kitchen Aid Ministry. In the Mayesville community, she was a member of the Senior Citizens Club at the Mayesville Community Center and the Helping Hands Club. Survivors include a son, Leroy Briggs of Capital Heights, Md.; three daughters, Nancy Prince of Clinton, Md., Martha Brisbon of Rembert and Ann Deas of Sumter; three brothers, Jerry Spears, Phillip Spears and Willie Spears, all of Baltimore, Md.; and 14 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Charles Briggs; a brother, Henry Spears; and a sister, Annie Mae James. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Palmer Memorial Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2001, at Galilee Baptist Church in Mayesville, with the pastor, the Rev. Eugene Myers, presiding. Burial will be in the Mayesville Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Briggs family home, 210 S. Main St., in Sumter. She will placed in the church at 2 p.m. for viewing until the hour of service. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.

Earline Brown died this morning, March 6, 2001, at her home, 230 Manhattan Ave. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.
