COLUMBIA — Isaac Jethro Diggs, husband of Rosa Lee Diggs, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center. Born Nov. 5, 1927, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late William C. Diggs and Aurelia Metia Slater Diggs. The family will receive friends at the home, 1065 Dyson Court, Sumter. Services will be announced by Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter.

Retired Col. Thomas J. Fowler, widower of Louise Judd Fowler, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

BALTIMORE, Md. — Adriana Gibson Robinson, 110, widow of Clarence Robinson, died Sunday, March 4, 2001, at Lorinn Frankford Nursing Center in Baltimore. She was born in Clarendon County, S.C. Services will be announced by Fleming and Delaine Funeral Home in Manning, S.C.

WILLIE GAINES JR.
BISHOPVILLE — Willie “Billy,” “Ponytail” Gaines Jr. died Sunday, March 4, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Interstate 20. Born March 4, 1951, in Sumter County, he was a son of Alice Virginia Gaines and the late Willie Gaines Sr. Mr. Gaines was a lifelong member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sumter, but also attended Mt. Hermon Baptist Church in Bishopville, where he resided at the time of his death. He worked with his father’s pulpwood business for many years, but was known as a “handyman” to most. He spent the majority of his adult life renovating and repairing houses and businesses. Among his many accomplishments was his part in the renovation of the S.C. Cotton Museum in Bishopville. Survivors besides his mother of Sumter include a son, Willie “Trey” Gaines III of Columbia; a daughter, Priscilla Urene Gaines of Columbia; a stepson, Jimmie Wilkerson of Arizona; a stepdaughter, LaTrina Inell Johnson of Bishopville; the mothers of these children, Betty Burton of Chicago, Ill., and Ann Johnson Weathers of Fairfax; two brothers, Haywood Gaines of Irvington, N.J., and Edward H. Gaines of Upland, Calif.; two sisters, Olivette G. Moore and A. “Dell” G. Moore, both of Sumter; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Fulton Street, Sumter, with the Rev. James Blassingame, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park in Sumter. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Wednesday. The funeral procession will leave at 12:30 p.m. from the home of his mother, 111 John St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the same home. Williams Funeral Home Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

CLAUDE L. RUSSELL
Claude L. Russell, husband of Betty Trapp Russell, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at Providence Hospital in Columbia. Born in Nevada, Mo., he was a son of the late John David Russell and Rose Brewer Russell. Mr. Russell was a retired U.S. Air Force chief master sergeant and a Vietnam veteran. He was a member of Pine Street Baptist Church in Nevada, Mo., and a Mason. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two sons, Claude Lawrence “Larry” Russell Jr. of Bethesda, Md., and Stephen Russell of Columbia; four brothers, Edward Russell of Zanesville, Ohio, Bob Russell of Nottingham, Pa., Jack Russell of West Plains, Mo., and Jim Russell of Nevada, Mo.; a sister, Rosanna Spring of Roseville, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Graveside services with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with Dr. Robert Winburn officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and at other times at the home. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

CAROLYN B. SMITH
Carolyn B. Smith, wife of the Rev. Sim Smith, died Monday, March 5, 2001, at her home. Born Oct. 7, 1937, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Leonard Branham and Margaret Price Branham. Mrs. Smith was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, where she had served as pianist, Sunday school teacher and Women on{} Missions leader. She was very active in all the churches her husband pastored full time. She was an “A” student in school and was offered a full scholarship to Furman University for scholastics and music. Survivors besides her husband of the home include three sons, Robbie Smith and wife, Joyce, of Pinewood, and Mark Smith and wife, Myra, and Paul Smith and wife, Kelly, all of Sumter; a brother, Leamon{} Branham of Camden; a sister, Lorene Thomas, of Camden; and five grandchildren, Christina, Johni{}, Anna, Patrick and Kevin. She was preceded in death by an infant brother, Lawrence Edward Branham; and a brother, Harvey J. Branham. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Pinewood Baptist Church with the Rev. Carroll Waddell, the Rev. Bennie Barwick and the Rev. Frank Davis officiating. Burial will be in Pinewood Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Billy Johnson, Dargan Elliott, Joe Pack, Ernest Benenhaley, Wilson Ray and Carl Hansen. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home, and at other times at the home, 1966 Pinewood Road, Sumter. Memorials may be made to Long Branch Baptist Church, 2535 Peach Orchard Road, Dalzell, SC 29040. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

SUMMERTON — Annie Virginia Martin Gibson, 90, widow of William Gibson Sr., died Tuesday afternoon, March 6, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning after a brief Illness. Born in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Hampton P. Martin and Amanda Hilton Martin. The family will receive friends at her home, Gibb Road, Summerton. Services will be announced by Fleming Funeral Home in Summerton.

RAYMOND HARVIN
Raymond Harvin, husband of Sarah Green Harvin, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at his home. Born March 1, 1954, in Sumter County, he was a son of Ruth Bowen Jackson and the late George Harvin. The family will receive friends at 125 Carver St. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

TURBEVILLE — Joseph Blake Smith, 34, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, in a local hospital after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Turbeville Southern Methodist Church. MIAMI, Fla. — James Wells Jr., husband of Rose Lee Barnes Wells, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2001, at his home in Miami. Born Sept. 8, 1931, in Lee County, S.C., he was a son of Mary Wells and the late James Wells Sr. The family will receive friends at the home of Thompson and Ethel Isaac, 135 Jefferson St., Lynchburg, S.C. Services will be announced by Commercial Funeral Home in Lynchburg, S.C.

ALICE M. FAISON
Alice McLane Faison, widow of William Faison, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Feb. 7, 1908, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late John W. McLane Sr. and Ida Kershaw McLane. She was reared in a Christian home and committed her life to Christ in her youth and became a member of High Hills Baptist Church. She attended Sumter County public schools and spent most of her life in New York. Survivors include a brother, John McLane; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by three brothers, John McLane, Kershaw McLane and Willie McLane; and two sisters, Lottie Brooks and Florence McLane. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at High Hills Baptist Church with the Rev. E.W. Palmer, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home of Thomas and Alice Miller, 2695 Claremont Road, Rembert. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

SARAH D. KIND
Sarah Daisy Kind, widow of Henry Kind Sr., died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born Jan. 31, 1919, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Raffield Choice and Martha Singleton Choice. Mrs. Kind attended Sumter County public schools. She worked at Sumter Frozen Food for many years and as a cook for the Lowder family until her retirement in 1985. She accepted Christ in her youth and was a member of Wayman Chapel AME Church. She later joined St. Paul AME Church, where she was a member of the Stewardess Board No. 4 and the women’s missionary society and served faithfully until her health began to fail. Her favorite pastimes were fishing, sewing and cooking. Survivors include six sons, Henry Jr., Isadore, Marion and Wesley Kind, all of Sumter, and Revel and Willie Kind, both of New Rochelle, N.Y.; five daughters, Mattie Lindsey and Annie Mae Douglas, both of Trenton, N.J., Bertha Rembert and Betty Fountain, both of Sumter, and Rosa Bennett of Tamarac, Fla.; four brothers, Raffield, Edward and David Choice, all of Sumter, and Daniel Choice of Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Amelia Davis and Viola Furman, both of Sumter; 45 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Joseph and Alberto Kind; three brothers, Sampson, Wesley and Joseph Choice; a sister, Mattie Abraham; and two nephews whom she reared, Joseph and Marion Kind. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today in the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul AME Church, St. Paul Church Road, with the Rev. Melvin Coleman, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Stewards and trustees of the church and friends of the family will be pallbearers. Members of the women’s missionary society of the church will be flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday. The funeral procession will leave at 2:15 p.m. from the home, 90 Choice St. The family will receive friends at the home. MATTIE M. JOHNSON
SUMMERTON — Mattie Mickens Johnson, 87, widow of Eugene Johnson, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Sam and Annie Bosier Mickens. Mrs. Johnson attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she accepted Christ as her personal savior and became a member of Mt. Pleasant UME Church in Panola, and she later joined the Chapel AME Church in Paxville. Survivors include five sons, John Henry Stukes Jr. of Thomasville, N.C., Willie Stukes of Richmond, Va., Eugene Johnson Jr., David Johnson and Joe Lewis Johnson, all of Summerton; four daughters, Essie Mae Wells of Pinewood, Ovilia Oliver of Summerton, Ruth Mickens of Summerton and Cynthia Walker of the home; 27 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by two children, Jack Johnson and Annie Lizza Johnson McConico; two stepsons, David and Willie Stukes; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Chapel AME Church in Paxville with the Rev. William Scott officiating. Burial will be in Conyer Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home, 7 Second St. Dyson’s Home for Funerals is in charge of arrangements.

TALMADGE R. MORGAN
Talmadge R. Morgan, 82, husband of Dorothy Matthews Morgan, died Tuesday, March 6, 2001, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter. Born June 21, 1918, in Andrews, he was a son of the late Fletcher and Laura Morgan. Mr. Morgan retired from E.I. DuPont in Camden and was a co-owner of Camden Hardware Co. until it sold. Mr. Morgan entered the armed services with the local National Guard Unit, Battery E, 178th Field Artillery on Feb. 7, 1941. Later, he transferred to the U.S. Air Force and served for the duration of World War II. Mr. Morgan was a member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church, where he had served on the administrative board, board of trustees and evangelism committee. He was a devoted member of the Wesley Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was also a member of American Legion Post 15. Survivors besides his wife of the home include two daughters, Donna M. Smith and her husband, Dr. Ken E. Smith, of Myrtle Beach, and Debora M. Lane and her husband, C. Gerald Lane, of Columbia; three grandchildren, Alison S. Speight and her husband, Aaron Speight, of Baltimore, Md., Ashley M. Smith, a student at Wofford College in Spartanburg, and M. Grainger Shelley of Columbia; a stepgrandson, H. Collin Lane, a graduate student at the University of Alabama in Birmingham; and a brother, J. Cramer Morgan and his wife, Jocelyn, of Spartanburg, formerly of Sumter. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in Sumter Cemetery with Dr. Louis Jamison and Dr. Ken Smith officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles G. Evans, Bryan Griffin, T. Harold Reese and C. Ellis Stafford. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church, The Kitchen Improvement Fund, 211 Alice Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 or to the Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29204. REV. BENJAMIN MOSES SR.
COLUMBIA — The Rev. Benjamin Moses Sr., husband of Lillie Mae Davis Moses, died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born March 12, 1933, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Willie Moses Jr. and Lurene Samons Moses. The Rev. Moses attended Sumter County schools and furthered his education at the University of South Carolina, Duke University and Morris College. He served in the U.S. Army. In his youth, he joined Mechanicsville United Methodist Church and served faithfully in various capacities. As a pastor, he served in various pastoral duties in the Florence district. He was a dedicated member of the Legendary Golden Five Gospel Group for many years. He was a successful business owner of Moses Upholstery, serving in the community for more than 40 years. Survivors besides his wife include three sons, Benjamin Moses Jr. of Aiken, Malcolm Moses of Lexington and Mark Moses of Sumter; two daughters, Catherine Robinson of Broad Run, Va., and Gina Brand of Sumter; a foster son, M. Earl Ford of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, Willie Moses of Sumter; a sister, Maggie Moses Deas of Sumter; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Mechanicsville United Methodist Church in the Ashwood community of Lee County with the Rev. Herbert Fogle, minister, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the Golden Five Gospel Group. Members of United Methodist Women will be flower bearers. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Thursday. The funeral procession will leave at 12:15 p.m. from the home, 1026 Porter St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home. ESSIE WILDER
Essie L. Binns Wilder, widow of James Wilder Jr., died Saturday, March 3, 2001, at Mariner Healthcare of Sumter East in Sumter. Born Sept. 19, 1916, in Atlanta, Ga., she was the only daughter of the late Henry and Sallie Burnette Binns. Mrs. Wilder was a faithful member of First Baptist Missionary Church, where she served on the usher board, as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Louisa Johnson Club. In 1937, she graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Atlanta. She received a bachelor’s degree in education from Morris College in 1957 and completed further studies at the American University in Washington, D.C. She began her teaching career in Sagami, Japan, in 1958, and other teaching assignments included the District of Columbia public schools, Fort Belvoir Elementary in Virginia and Crosswell Elementary in Sumter, where she retired in 1967. She was also a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the Garden Club and was a former Cub Scout den mother. Survivors include a son, Jason Wilder and his wife, Keiko Wilder, of Sumter; a granddaughter, Nicole A. Wilder of Dallas, Texas; a grandson, Kenji L. Wilder and his wife, Nahlia, of Killeen, Texas; and a great-grandson, Kenji L. Wilder Jr. of Killeen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Missionary Church with the Dr. W.F. Randolph, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. Members of First Baptist Missionary Church will serve as pallbearers and flower bearers. The family will receive friends at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Keiko Wilder, 1 Wingate Court. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES YORK SR.
James York Sr., husband of Flossie Mae White York, died Friday, March 2, 2001, at Dorn Veterans Medical Center in Columbia. Born May 2, 1927, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Pearson and Louvenia Hudson York. Mr. York was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and a lifetime member of Chapter 5 Disabled American Veterans. Survivors besides his wife include six sons, Imam Abdul S. Muhammad (formerly James York Jr.), Timothy York, Calvin York, Curtis York, Mikle York and Theodore Richard York; seven daughters, Viola York Washington, Loretta Marie York Ragin, Priscilla York Thrower, Sunida Evet York, Theola Richall York Carawan, Cindy Ella York Dozier and Nicky Giovanni York Helton; two brothers, Willie York and Thomas York; two sisters, Mary York Allen and Virginia York Perry; 24 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and his step-mother-in-law, Mary White. He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. A wake will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary Inc. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Heritage Chapel with the Rev. Nathaniel Wright officiating, assisted by the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty. Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park. The casket will be placed in the chapel at 2 p.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends at the home of Flossie Mae White York, 534 Knightsbridge St. Job’s Mortuary Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
