RUHAMA L. BURRISS
MANNING — Ruhama Lee Burriss, 82, widow of Frank J. Burriss, died this morning, April 23, 2001, at her daughter’s home in Manning. Born July 21, 1918, in Spartanburg, she was a daughter of the late Sloan B. Lee and Grace Glover Lee. Mrs. Burriss was a member of Manning United Methodist Church and attended Coker College and Converse College. Survivors include a daughter, Carolyn Coffey and her husband, Fin, of Manning; and two grandsons, Tom and Frank Coffey, both of Manning. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Manning United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Pettit, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Arthur Jordan, Ferrell Cothran, G.H. “Fuzzy” Furse III, Joe Henry King Jr., Lucien McCutcheon and John Burriss Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Nelle Wells Sunday School Class of Manning United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the home of Carolyn and Fin Coffey, 2 Hickory Ridge Circle. Memorials may be made to Manning United Methodist Church or Tri-County Hospice, 2650-A Hardee Cove, Sumter, SC 29150. Stephens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BLANCHE K. LEE
OLANTA — Blanche K. Lee, 87, widow of Ellie D. Lee, died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at her home. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Dainy Dargan Kirby and Sudie Adeline McElveen Kirby. Mrs. Lee was a retired school cafeteria worker. She was a member of Olanta Baptist Church, where she was a member of the adult ladies Sunday school class, the Olanta Baptist Church Ladies Circle Group No. 4 and the senior citizens’ association. Survivors include three daughters, Cherrie Diane Roshto, Deborah Elizabeth Lee and Barbara Jean Park, all of Columbia; a brother, Charles Kirby of Florence; and two sisters, Vide Rebecca White of Olanta and Joan Brock of Camden. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Ryan S. Kirby, Floyd Kirby and Dainy T. Kirby. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Olanta Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Floyd Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the S.C. Autism Society, 229 Parson St., Columbia, SC 29169 or ARC Of The Midlands. Floyd Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

HATTIE H. McFADDEN
LYNCHBURG — Hattie Hickson McFadden, 105, widow of William McFadden, died Thursday, April 19, 2001, at her home, 9695 Bill Lane. Born Feb. 10, 1896, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late James and Jessie Goodman Hickson. Mrs. McFadden attended Wes Lemmon School. She was a member of St. John United Methodist Church for 89 years. She became a member at 16 years of age and was honored with the title, mother of the church. She and her husband were married for 67 years prior to his death in 1981. Prior to becoming landowners and partners in their own farming enterprise, they were tenant farmers. She perfected the art of homemaking, was an accomplished seamstress and an excellent cook. Survivors include four daughters, Clattie McFadden and Dorothy McKnight, both of the home, Alma Lemmon of Philadelphia, Pa., and Bernice M. Evans of Los Angeles, Calif.; an adopted son, Valdalster McFadden of the home; a son-in-law, Dr. Ernest S. Evans of Los Angeles; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John United Methodist Church with the Rev. George Coursar officiating. Burial will be in Chandler Cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Tuesday. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ELOISE B. OVERSTREET
MANNING — Eloise Brown Overstreet, 82, widow of George Lee Overstreet Sr., died Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Southland Nursing Home in Florence. Born Jan. 8, 1919, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late George Ardee Brown and Susie Hancock Brown. Mrs. Overstreet was a member of Santee Baptist Church. Survivors include her children, Barbara Jean Gibson and husband, Earl, of Hartsville, Gloria McKissick and husband, David, of Florence, and G.L. Overstreet Jr. and wife, Dianne, of Manning; two brothers, Heyward Brown of Sumter and Herbert Brown of Alcolu; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Jimmy Eldreth and the Rev. Allen Mathis officiating. Burial will be in Florence Memorial Gardens in Florence. Pallbearers will be Len Brown, Stanley Brown, Glenn Brown, Everett Parks, Robert McKissick, the Rev. Allen Mathis and Ernie Brazell. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Florence Pee Dee Hospice or Santee Baptist Church. Stephens Funeral Home in Manning is in charge of arrangements.

SAMSON SINGLETON
Samson Singleton, 92, widower of Lucy McCaw Singleton, died Thursday, April 18, 2001, at his home. Born May 15, 1908, in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Frank and Rosa Dixon Singleton. Mr. Singleton attended Sumter County public schools. He was a former member of Hopewell Baptist Church in Dalzell. He was a self-employed farmer. He sold his plentiful crops in Sumter and in the surrounding areas for more than 65 years. He was the family historian. Survivors include four sons, Spencer Singleton, Samson Singleton Jr., Jerry Singleton and Moses Singleton, all of Sumter; four daughters, Pauline Singleton, Rosa Wilson and Clara Ford, all of Sumter, and Frances Singleton of Long Island, N.Y.; a brother, Frank Singleton of Sumter; two sisters, Lillie Mae Robinson of Sumter and Annie Bell Singleton of Long Island; 21 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Isiah Singleton; and three sisters, Irene Phillips, Julia Davis and Francis James. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul AME Shaw Church with the Rev. Melvin Coleman, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Willie Wright and the Rev. Sammy Simmons. Burial will be in Singleton-St.Paul AME Shaw Church cemetery located on St. Paul Church Road. The casket will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The family will receive friends at the home, 4120 St. Mark Circle. Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur L. Mackey, 78, husband of Nella “Sissie” Mackey, died today, May 1, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home.

MELVIN ANDERSON
LYNCHBURG — Melvin Anderson died Friday, April 27, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter. Born April 25, 1960, in Lynchburg, he was a son of Shirley Wells Anderson and the late James Anderson. Mr. Anderson professed Christ and joined Mt. Pleasant AME Church in his youth. He was a former employee of Piggly Wiggly, where he worked for seven years. He attended Lee County public schools and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1979. Survivors besides his mother of Lynchburg include a son, Edward Wilson of Columbia; four sisters, Barbara Anderson of Sumter, Carolyn Commander of Lynchburg, April Hudson of Sumter and Charlene Hudson of Mayesville; his maternal grandmother, Carrie Bell Wells of Lynchburg; his paternal grandmother, Mary Damon Anderson of Lynchburg; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant AME Church in Elliott with the Rev. Davie Brown, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 3 p.m. Wednesday. The family will receive friends at the home, 4224 Elliott Highway, Lynchburg. Job’s Mortuary Inc. in Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

ERVIN RAGIN
SUMMERTON — Ervin “Papa D” Ragin died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born May 14, 1930, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Charlie and Georgia Ragin. Mr. Ragin attended Scott’s Branch school in Clarendon County and Taw Caw Baptist Church. He had numerous friends and was a fun-loving person. Survivors include his companion, Jessie Coard of Summerton; eight sons, Ervin Bowman, Thomas Bowman, Charlie Bowman, Robert Bowman and William Bowman, all of Philadelphia, Pa., Willie Jackson of New York, Anthony Coard of Summerton and Frank Parker; seven daughters, Margaret Carroll, Annie Adams, Julia Bowman and Barbara Bowman, all of Philadelphia, Dorothy Blanding of Manning, and Ruth Coard and Wilhelmina Richburg, both of Summerton; four children whom he helped rear, Jessica and Adrian Coard, and Trayvon and LaShayla Richburg, all of the home; two sisters, Willieana Kittrell of New York and Edith Jackson of Summerton; 33 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a child. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Taw Caw Baptist Church in Summerton with the Rev. William T. Johnson, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Edith DeLaine. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The funeral procession will leave at 3:30 p.m. from the home, Fourth Street, Summerton. The family will receive friends at the home. Fleming Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

DUSTIN A. SIMMS
FOUNTAIN INN — Dustin Aaron Simms, 17, of Fountain Inn died Saturday, April 21, 2001, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. Born in Sumter, he was a son of William and Joy Watson Simms. He was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He was a senior at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville. His dream was to be a chef and to own his own restaurant. He was currently employed at Arizona Steakhouse. Survivors besides his parents of Fountain Inn include a sister, Jessica Lynn Simms of the home; his paternal grandmother, Molly Thompson of Abbeville; his maternal grandmother, Patricia Watson Longberry of Sumter; four uncles, Jerry Simms of Massachusetts, Ronnie Simms of New Hampshire, Jeff Watson of Miami, Fla., and James Watson of Sumter; and two aunts, Janice Watson of Sumter and Judy Watson of Charleston. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Joseph D. Watson. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 24, in Simpsonville. Burial was in Cannon Memorial Park cemetery in Simpsonville. Cannon Funeral Home-Jones Chapel, Simpsonville, was in charge of arrangements.

REV. E. THOMAS SMITH
SIMPSONVILLE — The Rev. E. Thomas “Tom” Smith, 53, husband of Nancy Lyons Smith, of 9 Brookhaven Way, died Sunday, April 29, 2001. Born in Washington, D.C., he was a son of Margaret Shipley Smith and the late Walter Scott Smith. He was associate pastor and minister of music at First Baptist Church of Mauldin, where he was a dedicated supporter of mission projects and a mentor to the youth of the church. He previously served as minister of music at First Baptist Church in Kannapolis, N.C., Ocean View Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach and was an officer in The CenturyMen, a national choral organization for ministers of music. Survivors besides his wife and his mother of Trussville, Ala., include a son, Clayton Thomas Smith of Simpsonville; and a daughter, Kimberly Suzanne Smith of Columbus, Ohio. He was preceded in death by a sister, Melinda Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Mauldin with the Rev. Gary E. Strickland and Dr. J. Kirk Lawton officiating. Burial will be in Graceland East Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at The Mackey Mortuary, Century Drive. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund or Music Ministry of First Baptist Church of Mauldin, 150 S. Main St., Mauldin, SC 29662. The Mackey Mortuary in Greenville is in charge of arrangements.

NANCY BEARD
Nancy Beard died Tuesday, May 1, 2001. Born June 26, 1960, in Boston, Mass., she was a daughter of Walter Gainey Jr. and Frances Timas Gainey. Services will be announced by Palmer Memorial Chapel Inc.

YVETTE JACKSON
Yvette Jackson died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Born June 30, 1966, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Betty Gettis Jackson and the late Julius C. Jackson. The family will receive friends at the home of her grandmother, Ira Bell Muldrow Johnson, 23 Guignard Drive. Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

PEARL G. RICHARDSON
Pearl G. Richardson died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter County, she was a daughter of Paul Wilson and the late Ethel Wilson. The family will receive friends at her home, 309 Manning Ave. Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home.

CARRIE L. BALLARD
SUMMERTON — Carrie Lee “Sister” Ballard, widow of Robert Ballard, died Sunday, April 29, 2001, at Lake Marion Nursing Home. Born March 15, 1916, in Summerton in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Wash and Maude Walters Brunson. Mrs. Ballard attended Clarendon County public schools. In her youth, she was a member of St. James AME Church. In later years, she joined the Church of God, where she was mother of the church. Survivors include two sons, John Ballard of Philadelphia, Pa., and Willie J. Ballard of Cerro Gordo, N.C.; four daughters, Jane Brown of Wilmington, N.C., Bobbie Lee Gaters of Summerton, Janie Mae Guilford of Utica, N.Y., and Elizabeth Ballard of Winter Haven, Fla.; two sisters, Rosa Aiken of Ruffin and Clara Frances Fladger of Jacksonville, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church with Elder James Taylor officiating, assisted by the Rev. O’Donald Dingle. Burial will be in Mt. Zion AME Church Cemetery, Camp Bob Cooper Road, Davis Station. The casket will be placed in the church at noon. There will be no viewing after the service. The funeral procession will leave at 12:35 p.m. from the home of her daughter, Bobbie Lee Gaters, Clarendon Court Apartments, Apt. 3-B. The family will receive friends at the same home. Viewing will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Summerton Funeral Service. Summerton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

MARION W. HORNE
SPARTANBURG — Marion Lee Williams Horne, 74, of Spartanburg and Camden, died Monday, April 30, 2001, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. A native of Shreveport, La., she was a daughter of the late Robert Willson and Marion Lee Russell Williams. She was a retired school teacher and a member of Grace Episcopal Church of Camden. Survivors include a son, Joseph Allen Horne III of Chattanooga, Tenn.; four daughters, Jenny Lee Horne Thomas of Chattanooga, Tenn., Annie Dunreth Horne Collins of Roswell, Ga., and Margaret Marion Horne Darr and Nancy Susan Horne Vetter, both of Spartanburg; and 12 grandchildren. Funeral services and burial will be held in Monroe, La. Memorials may be made to Carolina Children’s Home, 3201 Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29240, or to Episcopal Children’s Home, 234 Kings Mountain St., York, SC 29745. Bobo Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

CHESTER LIGHTY
BISHOPVILLE — Chester Lighty, 74, a retired police officer in Lee County, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at his home. Born Jan. 7, 1927, in Lee County, he was a son of the late Carrie Lighty Scott and the stepson of the late Albert Scott. He attended Lee County public schools and graduated from Dennis High School in 1946. Mr. Lighty served with the Lee County Sheriff’s Department from November 1974 through December 1992. He graduated from the S.C. Criminal Justice Academy and did further study in law enforcement at USC Sumter and Sumter Area Technical College. His studies included homicide, crime scene investigation, first response, constitutional law and narcotics intelligence. He retired as a captain of investigation. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Scarborough Lighty of the home; five sons, Robert Lee Lighty of Saudi Arabia, Chester Lighty Jr., Earl Lighty and Eddie Lee Lighty, all of Bishopville, and Leroy Lighty of Philadelphia, Pa.; five daughters, Rozenia James, Barbara Lighty, Carrie Belton and Ruth Lighty, all of Bishopville, and Dorothy Lighty of Columbia; a brother, Rufus Lighty of Bishopville; two stepsisters, Bessie Austin and Mary Howard, both of Bishopville; 20 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wisacky with the Rev. Sellers, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at noon Thursday. The family will receive friends at his home, 29 Lighty Lane, Wisacky. Square Deal Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ARTHUR L. MACKEY
Arthur L. Mackey, 78, husband of Nella “Sissie” Mackey, died Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Abilene, Texas, he was a son of the late Clinton Mackey and Vera Stevens Mackey. Mr. Mackey was a member of Bondovlove Baptist Church and the American Legion. He was a retired U.S. Air Force senior master sergeant with 30 years of service. He was a World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran. He also retired from the National Bank of South Carolina with 12 years of service as a courier. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include two daughters, Rosa Taylor and Sally Mackey, both of Spring, Texas; a brother, Roland Mackey of Richardson, Texas; three grandsons; and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Foy Mackey and Lavone Mackey. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald O. Richardson officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Pallbearers will be members of the American Legion, friends and family members. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and at other times at the home. Memorials may be made to Bondovlove Baptist Church Building Fund, 536 Mimosa Road, Sumter, SC 29150. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

ALBERT NEAL
LAKEVIEW, LONG ISLAND, N.Y. — Albert Neal, husband of Dorothy Zuell Neal, died Saturday, April 28, 2001. Mr. Neal was born in Sumter, S.C. He was a member of the DAV, Brave Hearts of St. Francis, Ministry for Catholics of African Ancestry, Ushers Society, O.L.I., Lakeview Council and NAACP. Survivors besides his wife of Lakeview include two sons, Albert Neal Jr. and Andre’ Neal; a daughter, Maria Neal; a brother; and five sisters. Funeral services were held at 9:45 a.m. today at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church. Burial was in Calverton National Cemetery.
