SARDINIA — Erma Floyd James, 77, widow of Charles W. James, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at NHC Healthcare of Sumter. Born May 6, 1924, in Florence, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Fannie Floyd. She was a retired secretary and a member of Sardinia Presbyterian Church. Survivors include a son, Charles W. James Jr. and his wife, Susan; a daughter, Janice Ann Moulton and her husband, Fred; a sister, Aurelia Carmon of Scranton; and two grandchildren, Eric and Missy Moulton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sardinia Presbyterian Church with Dr. Gordon K. Reed officiating. Burial will be in Sardinia-Gable Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

BRISTOW JOHNSON JR.
BALTIMORE, Md. — Bristow “Sonny” Johnson Jr., 57, husband of Amy Johnson, died Wednesday, Sept. 26, 2001. Born Nov. 2, 1943, in Sumter, he was a son of Bristow Johnson Sr. and the late Carolyn Johnson. He was raised in Sumter and later moved to Baltimore to reside with his wife. Survivors besides his wife include a daughter, Cynthia Johnson; six brothers, Joseph, Perry, George, Kirk, Danielle and Darryl Johnson; five sisters, Earline Holland, Mary Hunter, Shirley Lane, Marie Carolina and Margie Johnson; and two grandchildren. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Oct. 3 at Mount Zion Cemetery in Lansdowne, Md. Hari P. Close Funeral Service of Baltimore was in charge of arrangements. SUMMERTON — Emma Smalls King Abraham, 99, widow of Willie King and Johnny Abraham, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001. She was born March 1, 1902, in Georgetown County. The family will receive friends at the home of her niece, Daisy Carraway, 1863 Little Star Road, St. Mark community of Manning. Services will be announced by Samuels Funeral Home of Manning.

JESSIE M. BENNETT
SUMMERTON — Jessie Mae Bennett, 54, wife of Alonzo “Big Tank” Bennett, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Essex County, Newark, N.J., she was a daughter of Heneritta Palmer Richardson and the late Lamar Richardson. The family will receive friends at the home, 3467 Oaks Road, Summerton (Road 400, North Santee community). Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service.

CLARENCE BLOCK
COLUMBIA — Clarence Block, 71, husband of Daisy Delaine Block, died today, Oct. 29, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. He was born Nov. 17, 1929, in St. Louis, Mo. The family will receive friends at the home, 2809 Kershaw St., Columbia. Fleming-Delaine Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

WALTER C. SLUSS
Walter Charles Sluss, 50, died Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter.

WILLIAM L. SMITH
DALZELL — William “Billy” Lee Smith died Friday, Oct. 26, 2001. He was a son of Earl and Jean Smith. The family will receive friends at the home of his mother, 2830 Soye Drive, Dalzell, and the home of his father, 2351 Drexel Court, Dalzell. Services will be announced by Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter.

RONALD C. BLUNT
Ronald Charles Blunt, 73, husband of 45 years to Valerie Blunt, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001. Born in London, England, he was a son of the late Hubert Charles and Rosina Parson Blunt. He was a retired master sergeant with the U.S. Air Force with 26 years of service, having served during the Vietnam era. He served in the British Army, being one of the last soldiers to march out of Palestine two days before the formation of Israel. He was of the Episcopal faith. Survivors besides his wife of Sumter include a son, Roger Charles Blunt and his wife, Diane, of Littleton, Colo.; two sisters, Elsie Anley and Rose Clarke, both of London, England; and two grandchildren, Connor Charles Blunt and Eireann Victoria Blunt. He was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Herbert Blunt. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. James Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tony Metz officiating. The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the family residence, 70 Long Barn Court in Sumter. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Association-Mid State South Carolina Chapter, P.O. Box 7044, Columbia, SC 29202-7044. Bullock Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

FREDERICK E. BRINK
BISHOPVILLE — Frederick E. Brink, husband of Clara Powell Brink, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at his home in Bishopville. Born Jan. 24, 1930, in Elmira, N.Y., he was a son of the late Clayton Brink Sr. and Margretta Decker Brink. He was a member of Ashwood Baptist Church, past master of Manville Masonic Lodge No. 232 and a veteran of the United States Air Force. Survivors besides his wife include a son, Frederick “Chip” Brink Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of San Antonio, Texas; a daughter, Tracie Watkins and her husband, Steve, of Lamar; four grandchildren, Chesley, Christopher and Caleb Brink of San Antonio and Stephanie Watkins of Lamar; a brother, Clayton Brink of Horseheads, N.Y.; and three sisters, Ethel Bennett and her husband, Chester, of Lowman, N.Y., Louise Elliott and her husband, Earl, of Brazoria, Texas, and Ivy Rawley of Abilene, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Hedgepath officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery. Lewis Powell, Ed Mims, Don Krieger, Ray Hickson, John Powell, George Powell and Billy Lamkin will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Ashwood Baptist Church or a charity of one’s choice.

SADIE M. HAIR
WEDGEFIELD — Sadie McCall Hair, 88, widow of George T. Hair, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Dan and Eunice Alsbrooks McCall. She was a member of Wedgefield Baptist Church and was retired from Pioneer Dress Co. after 40 years of employment. Survivors include three sons, George B. Hair of Sumter, Ralph Hair of Decatur, Ala., and Allen Hair of Columbia; a brother, D.J. McCall of Sumter; two sisters, Maude Galey and Elizabeth Smith, both of Sumter; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Clyde Hair; a daughter, Mary Jane Hair; a brother, Marion McCall; and four sisters, Mary McCall, Lucille Silver, Belva Truesdale and Pearl McLeod. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Choate officiating. Burial will be in Troublefield Cemetery in Wedgefield. Kipper Hair, Ralph Hair Jr., Lee Cummings, Jeffrey Cummings, Mike McLeod, Reggie Goodman and Bobby Batten will serve as pallbearers. Dr. S. Perry Davis, Shelby Batten, Mike Earnhardt and Blake Carper will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, 802 Gordonia Drive. Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter is in charge of arrangements.

REV. ALFRED W. MALLETT
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Rev. Alfred Waymon “Alpha” Mallett, 75, husband of Christine Huff Mallett, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. Born April 2, 1926, in the Sugar Hill community of Manning, he was a son of the late Eugene Mallett and Dalia Burgess Mallett. He was a 1944 graduate of Manning Training School and attended Philadelphia College of Bible. In his youth, he joined Providence AME Church. After moving to Philadelphia, he joined Zion Baptist Church under the Rev. Leon Sullivan, where he was ordained as a deacon. In 1962, he joined the ministry. He pastored Christ Tabernacle Church from January 1963 until his retirement on Oct. 23, 1999. Survivors besides his wife of the home include a daughter, Felicia Mallett of the home; a granddaughter, Latrice Mallett of the home; an adopted brother, Irvin Burgess of Los Angeles, Calif.; two nephews raised as brothers, William Mallett of Manning and Ambrose Mallett of Denver, Colo.; three sisters, Edith Davis of Atlanta, Ga., Bessie M. McGriff and Ida B. McCollough, both of Manning; and a sister-in-law, Inez Mallett of Manning. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Albertus Mallett and Issac Eugene Mallett. Wake services will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Providence AME Church, Mallett Road, Sugar Hill community of Manning with the Rev. Dr. Bennie Colclough, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Gaymon, the Rev. Barney Dozier, the Rev. Cokley Richburg and the Rev. George P. Windley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The casket will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home of his sister and brother-in-law, Bessie and John McGriff, 2061 Bloomville Road, Manning. Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

DANIEL J. TROTTER III
Daniel Jacob Trotter III, 71, of Sumter, husband of Anna Davidson Trotter, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, in Montpelier, France. Born in Columbia, he was a son of the late Daniel Jacob Trotter Jr. and Lillian Lewis Trotter. He was a longtime Sumter businessman. Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Dan Lewis Trotter of Spring Hill and Richard Williams Trotter of Homestead, Fla.; a daughter, Christina Shadwell of Spring Hill; and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Marjorie Lewis Trotter. The family will receive friends from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at the home of Anna Trotter in Spring Hill.

MARY L. TURNER
LAMAR — Mary Elizabeth Locklair Turner, 82, of 106 Providence Road, Lamar, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at her home, after an illness. Born Oct. 26, 1919, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Lorie and Marie Randolph Locklair. She was married for more than 50 years to the late Hubert Turner. She was a resident of Sumter for a number of years before moving to Lamar in 1998. She was a member of Lamar First Baptist Church and the Moonbeam T.E.L. Sunday school class. Survivors include two sons, Girard Turner and his wife, Jeanette, of Lamar, and Russell Turner and his wife, Diane, of Summerville; a brother, Carrol Locklair and his wife, Fleetwood, of Lamar; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Lamar Chapel of Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lamar Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Lamar Chapel. Memorials may be made to Lamar Baptist Church, P.O. Box 431, Lamar, SC 29069 or the Gideon International, P.O. Box 199, Darlington, SC 29532. Kistler-Hardee Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

GEORGE E. WELCH
TURBEVILLE — George E. “Dickie” Welch, 61, husband of Wilaree Beard Welch, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, after a brief illness. Born in Georgetown County, he was a son of the late George Dargan Welch and Katie Langston Welch. He was a member of Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. He was a truck driver for Woerner Turf East Inc. Survivors besides his wife of Turbeville include three daughters, Lourie Gibbons and her husband, David, and Rita Welch, both of Turbeville, and Lisa Poston and her husband, Dave, of Silverdale, Wash.; four brothers, Gareth Welch of Pensacola, Fla., Alvy Welch of Turbeville, R.J. Welch of Summerville and Francis Welch of Scranton; a sister, Josephine Dawson of Mountain City, Tenn.; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. Welch; and a brother, Morrell Welch. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Horse Branch Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or the American Heart Association. SUMMERTON — Daisy Johnson Bennett, 93, widow of Wash Bennett Sr., died Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning. Born Aug. 25, 1908, in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late William and Lucretia Johnson. The family will receive friends at the home, 1060 Kephart Lane, Summerton. Services will be announced by King Funeral Home of Summerton.
