CHARLES E. RICE
Charles Edward “Pete” Rice, 56, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Missouri, he was a son of Birdie Althoff Rice and the late Tom Rice. He was an avid woodworker.
Survivors include three sons, David Rice and Richard Rice, both of Irmo, and Russell Rice of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Dawn Rice of Petersburg, Va., and Francine Rice of East Hampton, Mass.; a brother, Bob Rice of Fulton, Mo.; three sisters, Henryetta Cave and Shirley Jean Barry, both of New Bloomfield, Mo., and Doris Staats of Grove Springs, Mo.; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today in the chapel of Bullock Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mt. Taboe Cemetery in New Bloomfield.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, Memorial and Tributes, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

JOHNNIE SMITH
NEW ZION — Johnnie Fitzgerald “Gerald” Smith, 28, of 2206 Lake Woodberry Circle, Brandon, Fla., died Monday, June 3, 2002, at the home of his parents.
Born Sept. 9, 1973, in Sumter, he was a son of Johnnie L. Smith Jr. and Betty A. McFadden Smith. He joined Friendship Presbyterian Church, where he was a member of the usher board, the youth choir and the young adult choir. He served as secretary at Sunday school and traveled with the Presbyterian Youth Mission to Korea in 1993. He graduated salutatory in the 1991 class of East Clarendon High School in Turbeville. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in electrical engineering in 1996. He was a member of the Chi Zeta chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He was employed as an aerospace electronic system engineer, an aircraft application consultant and worked in navigation operations for Honeywell International in Clearwater, Fla.
The remains will be placed in the church 9 a.m. Saturday at Melina Presbyterian Church on Black River Road in Gable. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
The Rev. Carnell Hampton will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Stanley W. Jones, the Rev. Jerome McCray, Dr. Rodney A. Foster, the Rev. Sam Whack Jr. and Elder Marshall Ivey.
Pallbearers will be members of the Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Honorary pallbearers will be classmates and Friendship Presbyterian Men.
Floral bearers will be Friendship Presbyterian Young Adult Women and classmates.
The family will receive friends at the home of the parents, 10932 Black River Road, New Zion.
Memorials may be made to Friendship Presbyterian Building “in memory of Johnnie Fitzgerald Smith,” 10123 Black River Road, New Zion SC 29111.

JOSEPH STUKES
MANNING — Joseph “Bubba Son” Stukes, 80, husband of the late Mae Bell Stukes, died Saturday, June 1, 2002, at 513 West Huggins St. in Manning.
Born Feb. 2, 1922, in the Davis Crossroad section of Clarendon County, he was a son of the late Friendly Stukes and Millie Lawson Stukes. He was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and joined Spring Hill AME Church in his youth. He was a retired farmer and maintenance technician.
Survivors include two caregivers, Lucille Hicks and her husband, Altee, of Manning and Mozetta Isaac and her husband, Jefferson, of Gable; and two sisters-in-law, Ruth Stukes and Margaret Miller, both of Manning.
Funeral services will be held 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 North Church St., Manning. Rev. Jerome McCray will officiate. Burial will be in Manning Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the home of his niece and her husband, Lucille and Altee Hicks, at 513 West Huggins St., Manning. Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

EVERLINA M. WESTON
EASTOVER — Everlina Moore Weston, of 600 Henry St., died Saturday, June 1, 2002.
Born in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late William Moore Sr. and Marion Thompson Moore.
Survivors include three sons, John Moore and his wife, Bertha, David Moore and his wife, Barbara, and Roosevelt Weston; nine daughters, Bessie Branham, Ruth Sumter, Lenor Cleary, Corine Scott, Maggie Camper, Rosa Johnson, Anna Wilson, Mary Scott and Ethel Grant; four brothers, Edmond, Hamilton, Sam and William Moore Jr.; a sister, Susanna Snow; and grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at Antioch AME Zion Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Palmer Memorial Chapel of Columbia is in charge of arrangements.

NELL O. WILLIAMS
Nell Owens Williams, 82, widow of Harold Otis Williams, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, in Bainbridge, Ga.
Born Dec. 21, 1919, in Chadbourn, N.C., she was a daughter of the late D.S. “Terry” and Ivey Boartfield Owens. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She moved to Sumter at the age of 7, where she lived all of her life. She graduated from Sumter Girls High School in 1936 and was married to Harold O. Williams on Oct. 4, 1942. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Anne W. Grumbles and her husband, George, of Bainbridge and Terrie W. Gainey and her husband, Larue, of Sumter; a son, Ronald Williams and his wife, Ria, of Columbia; two sisters, Grace Owens Humphrey of Sumter and Bettie O. Clemmons and her husband, Dr. William Clemmons, of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Frances Montalbano Owens of Charleston; and three grandchildren, Glenn Grumbles of Tuscon, Ariz., Stormy Grumbles of Augusta, Ga., and Regina Fahey of Conyers, Ga.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. William Clemmons, the Rev. Dr. Thomas Painter and the Rev. Donald Burnett officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

ERNEST McFADDEN
OLANTA — Ernest “Tuter” McFadden, 77, husband of Daisy McFadden, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at McLeod Regional Hospital in Florence.
He was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Clarendon County. The family will receive friends at his residence, 4132 Swann Road, Olanta.
Services will be announced by Green’s Funeral Home of Lake City.

HAROLD A. WEATHERSBEE
Harold A. “Dick” Weathersbee Sr., 74, husband of Bonnie M. Weathersbee, died Friday, June 7, 2002, at his home.
Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Colin M. Weathersbee Sr. and the late Esther Bartlette Weathersbee. He was a member of First Southern Methodist Church, the Claremont Masonic Lodge No. 64 and a Shriner. He was the former owner of Custom Metalizing and Machine Company, Inc. and was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors besides his wife include two sons, Gary Lee Weathersbee and his wife, Alice, of Rimini; and Harold A. “Ricky” Weathersbee Jr. and his wife, Connie, of Sumter; three grandchildren, Blake Weathersbee, Lindsey Weathersbee and Katie Weathersbee; a brother, Harry B. Weathersbee Sr. of Sumter; two sisters, Margaret Garrett of Sumter and Vernice Marston of Orlando, Fla.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Elaine Weathersbee; a brother, Colin M. Weathersbee Jr.; and a sister, Myrtle Mae Weathersbee.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home with the Rev. Steve McLellan officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Masonic rites.
Pallbearers will be Blake Weathersbee, Dale Bean, Billy Glasscock, George Smith, Sonny McElveen and Jimmy Cole.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of Claremont Masonic Lodge No. 64.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home of his son, 1161 Rockdale Blvd.

MARGARET DENNIS ALSTON MCLEOD
REMBERT — Margaret Dennis Alston “Ms. Sugar” McLeod, 90, widow of Ransom McLeod, died Monday, June 3, 2002, at her home.
Born March 13, 1912, in Sumter, she was the daughter of the late Willie Dennis and Amy Holliday Dennis. She was affiliated with Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Survivors include six children, Minnie Alston, Shirley Lokey and Thomasina Pearsall, all of Philadelphia, Pa.; Edna Rembert of Union, N.J.; Dorothy Branch and Herbert Alston, both of Richmond, Va.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witness-North, 2250 Thomas Sumter Highway, U.S. 521 North, Sumter.
The funeral procession will leave 10:30 a.m. from her home, 6540 Camden Highway, Rembert.
The family will receive friends at her home.

HAROLD DOMONIQUE HUGGINS
Harold Domonique Huggins Jr., 12, died Tuesday, June 4, 2002, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.
Born Aug. 13, 1989, in Hartsville, he was the son of Harold Huggins and Patricia Rembert Huggins. He was a student at Chestnut Oaks Middle School in Sumter County. He attended Camp Kemo in Leesville. He was sent on a trip by the “Make A Wish Foundation” to Disney World where he met all of the Disney characters. He was a loving and kind child to all who knew him.
Survivors besides his parents include a brother, Harold Devonte Huggins; three sisters, Kayla and Patra Huggins of the home and Tamara Nelson of Sumter; his maternal grandparents, Alphonso and Pansy Rembert of Bishopville; his paternal grandparents, Harry and Luvenia Nelson of Bishopville; two great-grandmothers, Nellie B. Price of Bishopville and Helen Covington; and two special friends, Adrianne Cummings and Fredrick Owens of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by two great-grandmothers and four great-grandfathers.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at Chestnut Oaks Middle School, U.S. 401 North, Sumter. Pastor Walla Brown of Sandy Bluff United Methodist Church will officiate.
Burial will be in Benjamin Chapel AME Churchyard Cemetery in Bishopville. Pallbearers will be members of Liberty Hill Lodge No. 357. Floral bearers will be friends of the family.
The funeral procession will leave 3:20 p.m. from the home, 525 E. Calhoun St., Sumter. The family will receive friends at the home. Williams Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LILLIE B. SPIGNER
MANNING — Lillie B. Spigner, 92, widow of the late Luther C. Spigner, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence.
Born July 29, 1909, in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Robbie and Etta Brunson Barfield. She was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Ruby Sullivan of Turbeville, Lillian “Sis” Garneau of Manning, Patsy Coker of Denmark, and Hope Anderson of Camden; five sons, Ed Spigner of Florence, Ralph Spigner of Columbia, Bob Spigner and Fred Spigner of Manning, and Mac Spigner of Alcolu; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Luther Clyde Spigner Jr.; a grandson, Maxie Sullivan; and a son-in-law, Jimmy Sullivan.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Tuesday in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning. the Rev. Stephen Bowe and the Rev. Preston Grimsley will officiate. Burial will follow in Clarendon Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Spigner, Ral Spigner, Robbie Spigner, David Spigner, David Sullivan, Damian Garneau, Ray Coker and Brad Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Spigner, Freddie Spigner, Greg Spigner, Patrick Garneau, Todd Coker and Matthew Spigner.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning, and at other times at the residence, 14 Major Dr., Manning.
Memorials may be made to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.

DR. JAMES E. BELL
SANTEE — Dr. James Edward Bell Jr., 80, husband of Jean Martin Bell, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center in Sumter.
Born Jan. 27, 2002, in McCormick, he was a son of the late James Edward Bell and the late Ferol Acker Bell. He graduated from the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina; served an internship and residency at Roper Hospital and the Medical University of South Carolina in Obstetrics and Gynecology; was a physician in the practice of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Sumter since 1953 with Sumter OB-GYN (formerly The Woman’s Clinic, P.A.) He was a member of Santee Presbyterian Church, and was a former longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, where he served on the Diaconate. Dr. Bell was past president of the Rotary Club of Sumter, an honorary member of Rotary Club of Lake Marion, recipient of the Order of the Palmetto in 2002, diplomat of the American Board of OB-GYN since 1956, named South Carolina’s first volunteer Physician of the Year, volunteer and contractual physician in the local family planning clinics since 1961, member of the American Medical Association, South Atlantic OB-GYN Society, Sumter-Clarendon-Lee Medical Society, South Carolina Medical Association, past president of the South Carolina OB-GYN Society, past president of the South Central Association of OB-GYN, member of the THEGOS Society, Southern Medical Association, South Central OB-GYN Society, was co-founder of The Rib Open Golf Tournament, board member of Bank of America, member of the board of directors of Carolinas Health Hospitals and Health Services, Inc., shared services for hospitals in North and South Carolina, Master Mason, member of the Shrine and Royal Order of Jesters, founding chairman of the Utilization Review Committee for Tuomey Regional Medical Center, and former Chief of Staff of Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Survivors besides his wife of Santee include two sons, James Edward Bell III and his wife, Dawn, of Sumter and Georgetown; Frederick McDonald Bell and his wife, Cynthia, of Sumter; two daughters, Katharine Bell Ratterree of Spartanburg; Anne Middleton Bell of Sumter; a stepson, Jack Ryan Martin Jr. and his wife, Meg, of Summerton; a stepdaughter, Jeanne Martin Gasque and her husband, John, of Holly Hill; 11 grandchildren; and five stepgrandchildren.
A private burial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Summerton Evergreen Cemetery in Summerton, with the Rev. John Doubles officiating. Pallbearers will be the grandsons, Charles Edward Ratterree, Benjamin Everett Ratterree, Kyle Thomas McManamy, William Orin Ratterree, James Michael Bell and John Martin Gasque. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m Tuesday in First Presbyterian Church in Sumter, with Dr. Ed McLeod, the Rev. Dean Piper and the Rev. John Doubles officiating.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 472 Santee Drive, Santee.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210, or to the Medical University of South Carolina Fund for Scleroderma Research, ATTN: Dr. Richard Silver, or to Summerton Evergreen Cemetery Fund.

MARIE M. ADDISON
MANNING — Marie Myers Addison, 83, widow of Walter Randolph Addison, died Saturday, June 8, 2002, at Lake Marion Nursing Home in Summerton.
Born July 23, 1918, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late H.J. Myers and the late Laura Geddings Myers Porter. She was a member of Santee Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Maranda A. Arnold of Clemson; a son, Edwin Addison of Clermont, Fla.; a sister, Christina Meier of Charleston; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning. The Rev. Jimmy Eldreth will officiate. Burial will follow in McLeod United Methodist Church Cemetery near Eastover.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence of Ronnie and Karen Myers, 534 Rudy Rd., Manning.

BENJAMIN CHARLES
Benjamin “Bennie” Charles died Tuesday, June 11, 2002, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Josh Charles Sr. and Maybell Kind Charles.
The family will receive friends at the home of his nephew, Benjamin Edward Charles, 2140 Shallowford Road.
Services will be announced by Scriven Funeral Home of Sumter.

BESSIE B. DANTZLER
Bessie Lou Baker Dantzler, 91, widow of Whorton H. Dantzler Sr., died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, at a local nursing center.
Services will be announced by Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home of Sumter.
