HENRY B. SANDERS
Henry Benjamin Sanders passed away Feb. 7, 2003, in Eatontown, N.J. He was born Aug. 13,1913, in Dalzell.
Henry met and married his first wife, the late Pearl Evelyn Spann. Henry performed his military service from which he was honorably discharged. As a widower, he married Maria Burgess Pitts in 1966. After many years of service, he retired from Shaw A.F.B.
Henry was a longstanding pillar of the community, whose advice, support and services were frequently sought.
Due to failing health, Henry and Maria relocated to Eatontown, N.J., at the home of their daughter, Vivian.
His memory will be lovingly cherished and sustained by his children, Fred (Genetha) China, Sumter, Vivian S. Barron, Eatontown, N.J., Alethia Crawley, Bronx, N.Y., Henry O. (Pearlie) Sanders, Atlanta, Everett L. (Julia) Sanders, East Point, Ga., Evelyn L. (Edward) Williams, College Park, Ga.; one sister, Susie Weeks, Philadelphia; one brother, Charles (Catherine) Singleton, Brooklyn, N.Y.; one sister-in-law, Louise B. (Ezel) Gadson, Sumter; one brother-in-law, Silas (Rebecca) Burgess, Bronx, N.Y.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great- grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Saturday at Wayman Chapel AME Church at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Laddie Howard, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.
The funeral procession will leave at noon from the Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 South Main St.
The family will receive friends at Mt. Vernon Motel, Conference Room, 2 Broad St., Friday from 7 to 9 p.m.

GRACE T. BRADLEY
HARLEYVILLE — Grace Truluck Bradley, 79, of 260 East Main St., Harleyville, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003, at her residence.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bryant Funeral Home and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elmore-Hill-McCreight in Sumter.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Sumter Cemetery. The Rev. John T. Hucks will be officiating.
Pallbearers will be Allen Dowling, Timmonsville, Dr. L.R. Perry II, Florence, David Truluck III, Sardis, Wilson L. Amerson Jr., Charleston, Sherry Jackson, Sumter, and Rusty Amerson, Elloree.
Mrs. Bradley was born May 31, 1923, in Florence, a daughter of Eugene David and Edna Moore Truluck. She was a graduate of Sherwood High School and a member of the Harleyville Southern Methodist Church. She was the widow of Eldridge E. Bradley and was predeceased by a brother, David Eugene Truluck Jr.
Surviving: a son, Michael “Mickey” Bradley, Goose Creek; a daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Larry Davis, Harleyville; two sisters, Orilla T. Dowling, Timmonsville, and Hazel T. Perry, Florence; grandchildren, Jana Katlin Bradley, Givhans, Sabrina Davis Hicks and Larry Wayne Davis II, Greenville; and a step-great-grandchild, Alexis Grace Hicks, Greenville.

IRA HARGROVE
On Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, Ira Hargrove passed away at the Hopewell Health Care Center, Sumter.
Ira Hargrove, a son of the late Allen and Bertha Hargrove, was born in Sumter County on Feb. 7, 1924.
He was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, he joined Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Hargrove was employed for many years with the Sumter and Laundry Cleaner as a presser.
Survivors: his wife, Helen James Hargrove of Sumter; two sons, Allen (Felicia) Hargrove, Bronx, N.Y., and Carnell Hargrove of Sumter; two daughters, Jo Ann Hargrove of New York, N.Y., and Margaret Louise H. (Leroy Jr.) Brunson of Sumter; one brother, James (Viola) Hargrove of Sumter; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Marion H. Newton, pastor. The burial will follow in the White Cemetery, Sumter.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at the home, 104 Penn St., Sumter.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

JAMES W. RIDGILL
MANNING — James Willard Ridgill, 76, husband of Frances Huggins Ridgill, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2003, at his home in Manning.
Born Dec. 24, 1926, in Manning, he was a son of the late Richard Leslie and Sheldonia Smoak Ridgill. First married to the late Iva Lawrimore Ridgill, he was retired from the maintenance department at Crescent Tool in Sumter. He was a member of St. Peter’s Lodge in Manning for 55 years and was a member of Manning First Baptist Church.
Surviving besides his wife of Manning are two sons, James Richard “Ricky” Ridgill and wife, Mary Sue, of Sumter and Thomas W. “Tommy” Ridgill and wife, Melissa, of Florence; a daughter, Joyce R. Simon of Windsor, Va.; two brothers, David L. Ridgill of Manning and Joe Ridgill of Charleston; a sister, Julia Margaret Richburg of Manning; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday in Manning First Baptist Church. The Rev. Danny Bridges will officiate. Burial will follow in Manning Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Stephens Funeral Home in Manning and at other times at the residence, 2037 Paxville Highway, Manning.
Memorials may be made to Manning First Baptist Church, 49 W. Boyce St., Manning, SC 29102 or to Tuomey Hospice, 232 W. Calhoun St., Sumter, SC 29150.
Stephens Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of the arrangements.

GLENDA P. HICKMAN
WEDGEFIELD — Glenda Ann Pointe Hickman, age 51, wife of 16 years to Mark Hickman, died on Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
She was born in Hamlet, N.C., a daughter of the late Homer Lee Pointe and Hattie Stogner Pointe.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Charles A. Kendall Jr. of Sumter and Mark Louis Cote of Maine; one daughter, Beckie McCoy and her husband, Mark, of Wedgefield; two brothers, Larry Pointe and Jerry Pointe, both of Port Arthur, Texas; one sister, Barbara Treager of Washington; eight grandchildren, Cody and Cameron Kendall, Amanda, Ashleigh, Charlotte, Kirk, Jamie and Mickel McCoy; a mother- and father-in-law, Herbert L. and Joyce F. Hickman of Sumter; two brothers-in-law, Chris Hickman of Greenville and Todd Hickman of Sumter; one sister-in-law, Tammy Patten of Maine.
A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel. Internment will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.
The family will receive friends today immediately following the service at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the residence.
Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 400 Percival Road, P.O. Box 6604, Columbia, SC 29260-6604.
The family has chosen Bullock Funeral Home to handle the arrangements.

CLARENCE M. HOLMES
Clarence Melvin Holmes, husband of the late Geraldine O. Capers Holmes, departed this earthly life on Saturday, Feb. 8, 2003, at the Mariner Health Care East, Sumter.
Born in Sumter County on Oct. 9, 1913, he was a son of the late Harrison and Mary Carter Holmes.
Funeral services will be today at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Willie Wilson, pastor, officiating.
Burial will be in Hillside Memorial Park, Sumter.

MARGIE L. BURGESS
Margie Lorraine Burgess, a daughter of Lula Bell Burgess and John Wesley Burgess Sr., entered this life on Aug. 5, 1956.
She was educated in the public schools of Clarendon County and graduated from Manning High School with the Class of 1975. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
She was employed for many years with the Hampton Nursing Center, the Sumter Dialysis Center and, before her departure, she was employed with the Lake Marion Nursing Center in Summerton.
On Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003, Margie departed this life at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center.
Survivors besides her parents include three brothers, John Burgess and James Larry, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Robert Burgess of Sumter; and six sisters, Virginia Canty, Loretta Gamble and Dianne Burgess, all of Sumter, Ida Bell Billups of Paxville, Celestine Huggins of Atlanta and Letha Adams of Charlotte, N.C.
Margie was preceded in death by one brother, Lennon Burgess.
Funeral service will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Pinewood, with the Rev. Edward Sanders, pastor, assisted by the Rev. D.L. Grant, the Rev. Clifford Gaymon and the Rev. L.W. Barnes. Burial will follow in the churchyard cemetery.
The family is receiving relatives and friends at 1154 Moose Hill Drive, Paxville community.
Community Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

LAWRENCE M. STAFFORD
MANNING — Lawrence M. Stafford, 81, widower of Marguerite Hard Stafford, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at his home in Mt. Plymouth, Fla.
Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Arthur Franklin and Elizabeth Hodge Stafford. He was retired quality control inspector for Sunbeam, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of the VFW and DAV, and was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving are a daughter, Margo Stafford Justice of Mt. Plymouth, Fla.; granddaughter, Marceia Egler of Orlando, Fla.; a stepbrother, William “Billy” Robertson of Santee; two stepsisters, Ailene McIntosh and Addie Robertson of Bishopville; special friends, Jeff Durichek, Janet Hoover, John Loomis, Susan Morelli and Darlene Herrera; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today in Stephens Funeral Home Chapel in Manning. The Rev. Mendel Baker will officiate. Burial will follow in Wilson Union United Methodist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. today in Stephens Funeral Home in Manning.

JOLETHA C. WILSON
MANNING — Joletha Canty Wilson, 62, widow of Willie James Wilson, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at 214 Alfred Henry Drive, Manning Gardens Apt. 5-C.
Born Aug. 7, 1940, in the Jordan community of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Johnnie Canty and Pattie York Canty. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County and was a 1958 graduate of Manning Training School. She was employed at Baxter Laboratories and Warsaw Manufacturing Co. of Kingstree. She joined Union Cypress AME Church, Jordan, at an early age, serving wherever she was needed.
Survivors include two sons, James (Paulethia) Wilson of Decatur, Ga., and Johnny Keith (Barbara) Wilson of Manning; three daughters, Patricia (Minister Wilbert) Holliday, Evangelist Rosa Mae (John) Fulton, all of Manning, and Tiny (Herbert) Baxter of Dalzell; three sisters, Clara David of Manning, Margaret Scott and Lillian Canty, both of South Norwalk, Conn.; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, James Canty.
The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Union Cypress AME Church in Jordan with the Rev. Melissa Green, pastor, officiating, assisted by District Elder John D. Belton, Bishop James Wilson and the Rev. O’Donald Dingle.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at her residence, 214 Alfred Henry Drive, Manning Garden Apt. 5-C, Manning.

CHARLES M. SHAW
COLUMBIA — Charles Michael “Mike” Shaw, 57, died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Donald W. Shaw and the late Elizabeth Kolb Shaw.
Mr. Shaw was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church. He was formerly employed by Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Co.
Surviving are two uncles, James Kolb and Marion Kolb, both of Columbia; and one aunt, Cecile Davidson of Columbia.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Elmore-Hill-McCreight Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

SARAH ROBINSON
SUMMERTON — Sarah “Sodia” Robinson, 86, widow of Charlie Robinson, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born Sept. 16, 1916, in Clarendon County, St. Paul community, Summerton, she was a daughter of the late James Butler and Florence Green Butler.
The family will receive friends at the residence, 2730 Liberty Hill Road, St. Paul community, Summerton.
Services will be announced by Summerton Funeral Service of Summerton.

ELIZABETH M. JAMES
ALCOLU — Elizabeth “Liz” McCray James, 74, widow of Alex James, died Feb. 8, 2003, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center, Sumter.
Born June 3, 1928, in the Alcolu section of Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Centry McCray Sr. and Frances Washington McCray and stepdaughter of the late William Brown. She received her formal education in the public schools of Clarendon County. She received her LPN from John Hopkins School of Nursing, Baltimore. She joined Green Hill Baptist Church in Alcolu, serving as an usher, missionary and choir member. She was employed as a RTA specialist until retiring in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Micheal (Dorethea) James of Sumter; three daughters, Gwendolyn McCray of Alcolu, Frances Ann James of Florence and Elaine James of Columbia; three brothers, Centry McCray Jr. of Millerville, Md., Willie Brown of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Alonza (Ora) McCray of Queens, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorothy Brown and Roberta M. (Samuel) Gigger Jr., both of Chicago; a stepson Alphonzo (Mary Ann) Nelson of Manning; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Tonia James.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Green Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Alcolu, with the Rev. James S. Hudley, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. W.J. Frierson and Minister David Woods.
Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at her residence, 5805 U.S. 521, Alcolu.
Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning is in charge of arrangements.

LOUISE SIMON
DALZELL — Louise Simon died Feb. 12, 2003, at the residence, 5065 Irving Circle, Dalzell.
She was born in Lee County.
The family will receive friends at 5065 Irving Circle, Dalzell.
Services will be announced by Wilson’s Funeral Home.
