NORMAN POWELL, JR. -- Norman L. (Bubba) Powell, Jr., 46, died Sat., March 24, 2001, from injuries received in an auto accident. Graveside funeral services were held Monday, March 26, 2001, at Cedar Grove Baptist Church Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Powell was born in Hemingway, a son of Ella Lou Barnhill Powell and the late Norman L. Powell, Sr. He was an industrial construction worker. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Hemingway. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He served as huntmaster for Ward Hunting Club. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Hemingway, are: his wife, Beatrice W. Powell of Kingstree; one daughter, Ellen A. Powell of Kingstree; one son, W. Ward Powell of Kingstree; one sister, Vickie P. Brown of Hemingway; and one brother, Casey L. Powell of Andrews.

NADINE GREENLEE -- Nadine Dennis Greenlee, 83, widow of Clarence J. Greenlee, died Wed., March 14, 2001, in Summerville. Graveside funeral services were held Friday, March 16, 2001, at Kingstree Memorial Gardens directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mrs. Greenlee was born in Kingstree, a daughter of the late John W. and Ruth McElveen Dennis. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School, a retired employee of Warsaw Manufacturing Co. and the retired owner of Nadine's Cloth Shop. She distributed clothing and other goods for more than 20 years at the Community Center for the Needy. She was voted Citizen of the Year by the Kingstree Chamber of Commerce. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kingstree. Survivors are: one daughter, Frances G. Baker of Summerville; and one sister, Johnnie Ruth Baylor of Kingstree.

GENE HUDSON -- Carl Eugene "Gene" Hudson, 76, died Tuesday, March 13, 2001, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held March 15, 2001, at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed at McClary Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Mr. Hudson was born in Alcolu, SC, a son of the late John Ira and Oneta Tennant Hudson. He was a sales clerk at T&T Hardware in Kingstree. Survivors are: his wife, Hazel Miles Hudson of Kingstree; two daughters, Claire Watts of Cades; and Joyce Holladay of Kingstree; one son, Steve Hudson of Kingstree; one brother, Charles F. Hudson of Florence; and two sisters, Mary Gore of Florence; and Ruth Bodie of Garden City.

MARY CHEEZEM -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Welch Cheezem, 84, died Wed., March 21, 2001, at Marion County Medical Center. Graveside funeral services were held Fri., March 23, 2001, at Rose Hill Cemetery directed by Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. Cheezem was born in Kingstree, a daughter of the late William H. and Elizabeth Winslow Welch. She was twice married, first, to the late James B. Dixon, and is survived by Dr. William L. Cheezem of the home. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and received her masters degree from the University of South Carolina. She was a retired educator and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Marion. She was outstanding in the civic life of Marion. She was also involved in cultural and artistic efforts and has had some of her artistic accomplishments shown at a Regional Exhibit in the Florence Museum. Survivors are: two daughters, Elizabeth Dixon Baldwin of Charleston; and Mary Dixon Hatchell of Mt. Pleasant; and two brothers, R. Winslow Welch and James W. Welch of Kingstree.

CAROLYN THOMPSON -- Carolyn Douglass Thompson of Litchfield Beach died March 21, 2001. Memorial services were held Fri., March 23, 2001, at the Pawley's Island Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Frank S. Holsclaw directed by the Georgetown Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home. She was born in 1921 in Salters, a daughter of Carrie Dudley Sparks and Francis Adlie Douglass. She was married to Louis Bryan "Bumpy" Thompson. Survivors, in addition to her husband, are: four daughters, Lynn T. Gagliano of Georgetown; Claudia T. Bessinger of Litchfield Beach; Rebecca T. Godwin of Cambridge, NY; and Caroline T. Cummings of Greenville; one sister, Mrs. Louis J. Nexsen of Kingstree; and one brother, Frank A. Douglass, Jr. of Lake City.

MARY McKNIGHT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Jones Green McKnight were held Sat., March 24, 2001, at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, conducted by the Rev. C. W. Green. Burial followed at the Porter-Ferrell Cemetery in Salters directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home. Mrs. McKnight, 78, died Wed., March 21, 2001, at McLeod Regional Center in Florence. She was born Sept. 19, 1922, in Georgetown, a daughter of the late Ben Cone and Victoria Jones. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was farmer and housewife. She was married to the late Brice Green. Survivors are: her husband, Randy McKnight, Sr. of the home; two sons, Henry Green of Salters; and James Green of Washington, DC; three step-children, Mrs. Ruby Heyward of Kingstree; Mrs. Ella Mae Shaw and Randy McKnight, Jr., both of New Haven, CT; one brother, Horace Benbow of Lane; and one sister, Lillie Mae Jones of Lake City.

OLLIE PASLEY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ollie Singletary Pasley were held Thurs., March 22, 2001, at Chavis A.M.E. Church in Hemingway, conducted by the Rev. Jesse Marshall. Burial followed at Millpond Cemetery directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home. Mrs. Pasley, 87, died Sun., March 18, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Lake City. She was born April 18, 1913, in Scranton, a daughter of the late Robert Singletary and Drucilla Brown Singletary. She was a member of Chavis A.M.E. Church. She was also a member of Chavis O.E.S. #328. Survivors are: one son, Elder Theodore Pasley of Columbia; three daughters, Mrs. Drucilla Grimes of Glendale, WI; Mrs. Janether Wilson and Mrs. Bobby Greene, both of Hemingway.

CORINE McCREA -- Funeral services for Mrs. Corine Chandler McCrea were held Sat., March 24, 2001, at the Church of God and True Holiness Church in Georgetown, conducted by Elder Nathaniel Gamble. Burial followed at Greenlawn Cemetery in Kingstree directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral. Mrs. McCrea, 63, died Mon., March 19, 2001, at Carolinas Hospital System-Kingstree. She was born June 13, 1937, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Isiah Chandler and Idell Porsha Chandler. She was a member of Church of God and True Holiness Church. Survivors are: two sons, Alexander McCrea of Florence; and Timmy Jermaine McCrea of Salters; and three daughters, Mrs. Cora Bell Cobb of Georgetown; Mrs. Angela McClary of Kingstree; and Katherine McCrea of Salters.

EMILIE KOZMA -- Emilie Miriam Kozma, 88, died Thurs., March 22, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services were held March 25, 2001, at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial followed at Williamsburg Cemetery directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home. Miss Kozma was born in Camden, SC, a daughter of the late Massoud and Almaza Osmer Kozma. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was a retired sales person. She was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church.

CLELIA SMITH -- Mrs. Clelia Mixon Smith, 94, widow of C. Liston Smith, died Monday, March 26, 2001, at the Ron McNair Nursing Home. Funeral services were held Wed., March 28, 2001, at the Hebron United Methodist Church. Burial followed at the church cemetery directed by Brockington Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith was born in Florence County, a daughter of the late Christopher Jahue and Corrie Stokes Mixon. She was a graduate of Olanta High School and was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Joan S. Woolley of Florence; and five sons, Gerald Smith, Hugh Smith and Bruce Smith, all of Cades; Clarence L. Smith, Jr. of Bonneau; and David L. Smith of Charleston.
