DOUGLAS JONES, JR. -- Douglas Jones, Jr., 72, died Fri., May 31, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Mon., June 3, 2002, in the Brockington Funeral Home chapel in Lake City. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Piney Grove Cemetery. Mr. Jones. widower of Dorothy J. Jones, was born in Sumter County, a son of the late Douglas Jones Sr., and Ruby Ardis Jones. He retired from Farmers Telephone of Kingstree. Survivors are: two daughters, Linda Miles of Olanta; and Dorothy Denise Parrott of Scranton; one son, Douglas James Jones of Kingstree; one sister, Margaret Singletary of Hamlet, North Carolina; and one brother, James Warren Jones of Spartanburg.

HALLIE BROWN -- Funeral services for Hallie C. Brown, 83, were held Thurs., May 30, 2002, at First Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by North Brevard Funeral Home, followed at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Brown, widow of H.S. Brown, Sr., died Mon., May 27, 2002, at Faith House Assisted Living Facility. She had moved to Brevard County, Florida, in 1966 from Kingstree. She was a former school teacher, having taught in Williamsburg County, schools for 17 years. She and her husband had owned A-1 Rental Services in Titusville until 1977. She was a member of Wagon Wheels and Pilot Club for many years. Survivors are: one son, Shep Brown of Titusville; two daughters, Pam Milner of Aiken; and Debbie Prenger of Titusville; and one sister, Lillian DuBose of Kingstree. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church, 1235 S. Park Ave., Titusville, Florida 32780 or to North Brevard Charities, 4433 S. Hopkins Ave., Titusville, Florida 32780.

LEROY RICHARDSON -- Funeral services for Leroy H. Richardson, conducted by the Rev. Jerome Wilson, were held Sat., June 15, 2002, at Greater Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Richardson, 83, a retired chef, died Tues., June 11, 2002, at his residence. He was born Sept. 16, 1918, in Walterboro, to the late Fred F. Richardson and Ellen Washington Richardson. He received his formal education in the public schools of Colleton County and continued it at Denmark Area Trade in Denmark. He was a member of Greater Bethel A.M.E. Church and served as class leader, steward, president of the lay organization and member of the senior and the male choirs. He was also a life member of the NAACP and a mason. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Jessie Searcy Richardson of the home; one daughter, Joyce Lowe of Kingstree; and two sisters, Eloise Bennett of Williams and Jestine Toby of Savannah, Georgia.

CLARENCE HICKSON, SR. -- Funeral services for Clarence Hickson, Sr., conducted by the Rev. Eugene Burgess, were held Sat., June 15, 2002, at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in Scranton. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richardson Funeral Home, followed at Lee Cemetery. Mr. Hickson, 80, a retired farmer, died Mon., June 10, 2002, at the Bryan Dorn Veteran's Hospital in Columbia. He was born April 20, 1922, in Florence County, a son of the late Gervey Hickson and Jannie Hickson. He received his formal education in the public schools of the county and was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where he served on the deacon board. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Illa Jones Hickson of the home; one son, Clarence Hickson, Jr., of the home; two daughters, Gwendolyn Hickson and Ilene Hickson, both of Scranton; four brothers, Norman Hickson and Roy Hickson, both of Washington, DC; Wallace Hickson of Oxon Hill, Maryland; and Joe Hickson of Scranton; and three sisters, Mrs. Aretha Arrington of Florence; Elma Hickson of Scranton; and Mrs. Ruth Gantt of Washington, DC.

AZALEE FRAZIER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Azalee June Frazier, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Brockington, were held Mon., June 10, 2002, at St. John 4-B Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Brooks Cemetery in Greeleyville. Mrs. Fraizer died June 4, 2002. She was born May 27, 1925, in Greeleyville, a daughter of the late James Mozone and Mary Jane Dubois. She attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. She attended Beaumont School of Practical Nursing in Philadelphia, where she became a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of St. John 4-B Baptist Church and Order of Eastern Star. She worked for Rest Haven Nursing Home for over 20 years. She later worked as a licensed practical nurse in Miami, Florida for over 15 years. She was married to Herbert T. Frazier. Survivors are: three daughters, Bridget Morgan and Evelyn Irvin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Cassandra W. Mouzon of Stone Mountain, Georgia; and two sons, Craig D. Frazier and Carter White of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

EVERLENA FULTON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Everlena Fulton, conducted by the Rev. Francis Burrows, were held Wed., June 12, 2002, at Siloam Baptist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mrs. Fulton, widow of David Fulton, died June 6, 2002, at Ron McNair Nursing Home in Lake City. She was born in Williamsburg County on January 4, 1917, a daughter of the late Jannie Cooper and Ben B. Brockington. She attended Wilson Chapel School and was a member of Siloam Baptist Church. She was a self-employed child care provider. Survivors are: one son, Verdell Fulton of Beaufort; and three daughters, Mrs. Mary Barrou of Washington, DC; Mrs. Jannie Mae Dawkins of Brooklyn, New York; and Louise Fulton of the home.

ANDREA JOHNSON -- Funeral services for Andrea Eyvonne Johnson, conducted by the Rev. Clemon Grant and the Rev. Lincoln C. Lee, were held Thurs., June 13, 2002, at Central Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Salters Cemetery in Salters. Ms. Johnson died June 7, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born on November 21, 1964, a daughter of Leroy Johnson and Helen Whitfield Johnson. She was a member of Central Baptist Church. She received her formal education at C.E. Murray High School in Greeleyville and received a bachelor of science degree from Claflin College in 1988. She was formerly employed at St. Rayfield Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut, New Haven Police Department, on Dow Jones Industrial on Wall Street in New York City as a computer programmer. While residing in Charlotte, North Carolina, she was employed by Liberty Mutual Insurance Company as a computer programmer. Survivors, in addition to her parents of Salters, are: two brothers, Joey Aaron Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina; and Shantia Montigo of Montgomery, Alabama; and two sisters, Mrs. Glenda Lee Johnson Woods of Savannah, Georgia; and Karen Laniece Johnson of Montgomery, Alabama.

HARRY COLE -- Harry D. Cole, 65, husband of Elizabeth Miller Cole, died July 17, 2002. Funeral services for Mr. Cole, conducted by the Rev. Norman Fry, were held Wed., July 24, 2002, at the First Baptist Church in Friendswood, Texas. Burial, directed by Jeter Memorial Funeral Home, followed at Forest Park East Cemetery in Webster, Texas. Mr. Cole was a son of the late H. L. Cole, Sr., and Myrtie Chandler Cole of Kingstree. He had resided in Friendswood, Texas since 1965. He joined the United States Air Force in the early 1950s and became an electronics expert. Since 1960, he had worked as a computer engineer specialist, first for Univac at NASA and then for 21 years with Harris Communi-cations and was a current employee of Hewlett Packard Corp. until his death. He was one of the early pioneers of computers in the country and helped to make them an everyday reality in the lives of Americans. In Texas, he was also a pioneer in city sports, having been the Little League Colts Booster Club president and vice-president of football from 1968-1974. He also served as President of the Little Dribbers Basketball League from its inception in 1974 to 1977. Survivors are four children: Mardi Cole Parmenter, David Cole, Danny Cole and John Cole of Friendswood; three sisters, Helen Winburn and Lita Guertin of South Carolina; and Barbara Hydanus of Florida; and two brothers, Henry and Marion Cole of South Carolina.

GWYN LOCKE -- Gwyn Epps Locke, 87, widow of the late Lieutenant Commander (retired USN) Robert Page Locke, died July 20, 2002, in Gulfport, Mississippi. Born in Kingstree, she was a daughter of the late Robert Daniel Epps and Rosa Kennedy Epps. After graduating with honors from Kingstree High School, she earned her registered nurse degree from the Medical University of South Carolina School of Nursing in Charleston. She was a private nurse to General Cornelius Vanderbilt on his yacht for a year, traveling between New York and Florida, after which she joined the US Navy Nurse Corps. She met and married Ensign Robert (Bob) Page Locke of Van Nuys, California in Hawaii, after which they lived many places where her husband's Navy career took them, including Japan. Later, both joined Dr. Jim Turpin's Project Concern in Vietnam, working with the Montanyards in the highlands. After her husband's retirement, they made their home in California, North Carolina, South Carolina and most recently at the Naval Home for retired Navy officers in Gulfport, Mississippi. Survivors are: two sons, Robert P. Locke, Jr. and Vance Locke, both of California; one daughter, Suzi Locke of California; and four sisters, Florrie Epps Mixon of Charleston; Hazel Epps Price and Jane Epps Moore of Columbia; Margaret Epps Finfrock and Thelma Epps Pendarvis of Charlotte, North Carolina.

RHETT WARD -- The Rev. Belton Rhett Ward, 74, died Wed., July 24, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Fri., July 26, 2002, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Ward was born in Williamsburg County, a son of the late LeRoy Edward and Eunice Eaddy Ward. He was a graduate of Indiantown High School. He was a retired plumber and former superintendent of public works for the Town of Kingstree. For more than 39 years, the Rev. Ward was a minister in the Pentecostal Holiness Conference, having pastored Churches at Spring Pond, Oak Ridge, Prospect, Sandy Bay, Kingstree and Barrineau. He attended Barrineau Pentecostal Holiness Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Barbara Rodgers Ward of Kingstree; two sons, Gregg Ward of Summerville; and George Ward of Kingstree; one daughter, Cynthia Gantt of Conway; three brothers, Marvin Ward and Thurmond Ward, both of Kingstree; and the Rev. Robert Ward of Columbia; and two sisters, Vermell W. Douglas of Hemingway; and Lou Dell W. Mishoe of Kingstree.
