EMILY HANNA -- Emily Ann Hanna, 53, died Fri., Oct. 25, 2002, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Sun., Oct. 27, 2002, at Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at McClary Cemetery. Miss Hanna was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of Marguerite McClary Hanna and Samuel McBride Hanna. She attended Williamsburg County Schools. Survivors are: four brothers, Henley Hanna and Charles Hanna, both of Kingstree; Samuel Hanna of Manning; and Phil Hanna of Bonneau. Memorials may be made to Pee Dee Center, National Cemetery Rd., Florence, SC 29510.

THEODORE McFARLIN -- Funeral services for Theodore "Big Mac" McFarlin, conducted by the Rev. Levern O. Brown, were held Tues., Oct. 29, 2002, at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at McGill Cemetery in Greeleyville. Mr. McFarlin, 70, the former Sheriff of Williamsburg County, died Tues., Oct. 22, 2002, in Devons, Massachusetts. He was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Salters, a son of the late James Theodore "JT" and Obell Scott McFarlin. He was the first American-African sheriff elected in the state of South Carolina since Reconstruction. He was elected in 1976 and served for more than 16 years. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee Board. He served in the United States Army and had the opportunity and privilege to tour Korea, France, Germany, Vietnam and numerous other countries. In 1972, Sergeant Theodore McFarlin retired after over 20 years. He was also an entrepreneur. In 1972, he established McFarlin's Superette and Barbecue in Salters. He also served as police officer with the Kingstree Police Department for approximately one year. Survivors are: one son, Maurice McFarlin of Baltimore, Maryland; two daughters, Theodosia McFarlin-Bias and Valerie Denise McFarlin, both of Baltimore, Maryland; and five grandchildren.

THOMAS SMELTZER -- Funeral services for Thomas W. Smeltzer, 81, of Columbia, conducted by the Rev. Jerry James and the Rev. Mary Green Kearse, Mr. Smeltzer's niece, were held Mon., Oct. 28, 2002, at Rehoboth United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Shives Funeral Home, followed at Williamsburg Cemetery. Mr. Smeltzer died Sat., Oct. 26, 2002. Born in Norfolk, Virginia, he was the son of the late Iva Daniel and Edwina Kellahan Smeltzer. He served his country as a soldier in the Second Infantry Division throughout World War II, participating in five major battles including the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of of the Bulge. He graduated from the University of South Carolina, where he was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and drum major for the Gamecock Marching Band. He was a founding member of the Gamecock Marching Band Alumni Association. Survivors are: one son, Thomas W. Smeltzer, Jr., of Los Angeles, California; four daughters, Laura Smeltzer Campbell and Susan Smeltzer Mullikin, both of Camden; Jan Smeltzer Smith of Columbia; and Dot Smeltzer Rhyne of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one sister, Alice Green of Georgetown; and four grandchildren. In lieu of Flowers, memorials may be sent to Rehoboth United Methodist Church, 6911 Two Notch Road, Columbia, SC 29223 or the Carolina Alumni Association, 1527 Senate St., Columbia, SC 29201. A tribute has been established to celebrate the life of Mr. Smeltzer at www.AmericanMemorials.com.

LILLIE BEAUFORT -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lillie F. Beaufort, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Hammett, were held Mon., Oct. 21, 2002, at St. Phillip A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Smith Cooper Cemetery. Mrs. Beaufort died Wed., Oct. 16, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System. She was born April 6, 1910, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late Saul and Rebecca Fluitt. She grew up in the Taft Community and was educated in the public schools of Williams-burg County. She was a member of St. Phillip A.M.E. Church, where she was mother of the church. She was a member of the Lily White Chapter #349, Order of the Eastern Star and the Farmers Aide Lodge. She was married to the late Frank Beaufort. Survivors are: two sisters, Idell Miller of Salters; and Mary Lee Holmes of Charleston; 1 adopted grandson; 12 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

EVA NESMITH -- Funeral services for the Rev. Eva Mae Nesmith, conducted by the Rev. Virgil Hammett, were held Wed., Oct. 23, 2002, at St. Phillip A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Smith Cooper Cemetery. The Rev. Nesmith died Fri., Oct. 18, 2002, at McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence. She was born March 1, 1934, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of late Oddie and Mary (Pet) Mouzon. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of St. Phillip A.M.E. Church. While serving at St. Phillip, she started the first youth choir. She was a Sunday school teacher, leader of the Missionary Society for 21 years, leader of the YPD, a member of the Trustee Board and Class Leader No. 8. She sang in the senior choir and was a member of the Spiritual Light Gospel Group. She was assistant pastor of St. Phillip A.M.E. Church. During her early years, she worked at Scottwood Plantation. She was later employed with Oneita Knitting Mill of Lane and Andrews, Mars Bluff Knitting Mill, a supervisor at the Gordon Development Center and she owned and operated the Nesmith Country Store. Survivors are: her husband, Ernest Nesmith of the home; two sons, Jasper Nesmith of Salters; and Isiah Nesmith of Forestville, Maryland; three daughters, Ernia Graham of Trio; Joan Scott of Tampa, Florida; and Christine McBride of Salters; two children she reared as her own, Mary Smoot of Columbia; and Anthony Mouzon of Fayetteville, North Carolina; one brother, Louis Mouzon of Salters; four sisters, Pearl Bradley and Mary Frances Goss, both of Clearwater, Florida; Margaret Ross of Trio; and Minnie Gamble of Salters; 17 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

ESSIE DICKERSON -- Funeral services for Mrs. Essie Mae Dickerson, conducted by the Rev. Donnie McBride, were held Sat., Nov. 2, 2002, at Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at St. James A.M.E. Church Cemetery. Mrs. Dickerson, 87, died Sat., Oct. 26, 2002, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital in Kingstree. She was a daughter of the late Chester Davis and Ellen McDonald. She was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Greater Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she served on the Stewardess Board. Survivors are: five sons, James Fulmore of Lane; Douglas Fulmore of Clarksvile, Tennessee; Ronald Dickerson of Brockington, Massachusetts; James Edward Dickerson and Arthur Lee James, both of Tampa, Florida; two daughters, Mrs. Queen Sarah Linda Moses of Myrtle Beach; and Mrs. Doris Fulmore Witherspoon of Greeleyville; and one brother, Jim Davis of Ft. Myers, Florida.

CLYDE HAM -- Funeral services for Clyde Ham, conducted by the Rev. Levern O. Brown, were held Mon., Nov. 4, 2002, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at McGill Cemetery. Mr. Ham, 83, died Tues., Oct. 29, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born Aug. 20, 1919, in Florence County, a son of the late James Ernest Ham and Mary Graham Ham. He received his formal education in the public schools of Florence County. He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church of Salters. He served his country during World War II as a soldier in the United States Army; and while living in Miami, Florida, he was employed as a heavy duty machine operator for over 40 years. He was married to the late Mrs. Rosa Lee Montgomery Ham. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Iva Pratt of Lake City; one step-son, Ricardo Dixon of Kingstree; three brothers, Elijah Ham, Cravin Ham and Moses Ham, all of Toledo, Ohio; six grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

LOYD REARDON -- Ellie Loyd Reardon, 67, died Fri., Nov. 1, 2002, in a Kingstree hospital. Funeral services, conducted by Dr. Rodney Foster and the Rev. John Hudson, were held Sun., Nov. 3, 2002, at Midway Presbyterian Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Reardon was born in Clarendon County, a son of the late Phillip Boone Reardon and Mary Lorena Burns Reardon. He was a retired farmer and service station manager. He was a member of Midway Presbyterian Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Mae Gibbons Reardon of New Zion; two sons, Loyd Jonathan Reardon and James Phillip Reardon, both of Kingstree; one sister, Alma Nell Welch of Goose Creek; two brothers, William Boyd Reardon of Lockhart; and George Carroll Reardon of Walterboro; and one granddaughter. Memorials may be made to Midway Presbyterian Church or the American Diabetes Association.

WILL "BUDDY" MILES -- Will R. "Buddy" Miles, 67, died Mon., Nov. 4, 2002, in the Lake City hospital. Funeral services were held Wed., Nov. 6, 2002, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at High Hill Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Miles was born in Florence County, a son of the late Cleland L. and Lennie Poston Miles. He was a graduate of Lake City High School and a retired farmer. He was a member of Grace and Glory Ministries, the Pearce Hunting Club and served in the US Army. Survivors are: his wife, Barbara Hutchinson Miles of Scranton; one daughter, Karon M. Epps of Scranton; one sister, Doris Duke of Scranton; five brothers, Colonel Lee Miles of Lake City; James A. Miles and Kenneth Miles, both of Scranton; W. Laverne Miles of Kingstree; and J. W. Miles of Phoenix, Arizona; and two grandsons. Memorial may be made to Grace and Glory Ministries, PO Box 28, Scranton, South Carolina 29591.

MOTT SHAW -- Funeral services for Mott Shaw, conducted by the Rev. Levern Brown, were held Wed., Nov. 6, 2002, at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Cross Roads Cemetery. Mr. Shaw, 85, died Fri., Nov. 1, 2002, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was a son of the late James Shaw and Louisa Shaw. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was employed as a construction worker for many years. He was a member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where he served on the Trustee Board. Survivors are: one son, Rainey Woods of Salters; one step-daughter, Mrs. Bessie Woolforlk of Willingboro, New Jersey; one brother, Willie Shaw of New Haven, Connecticut; two grandchildren he reared as his own, Mrs. Dell Bradley and Jimmy Bradley, both of New Haven, Connecticut; and 11 grandchildren.
