HELEN BLAKELEY -- Helen Boulware Blakeley, 88, widow of Rhodus Emanuel Blakeley, died Tuesday, January 7, 2003, at Georgetown Memorial Hospital. Funeral services were held Thurs., Jan. 9, 2003, at Suttons United Methodist Church. Mrs. Blakeley was born in Newberry County on December 8, 1914, a daughter of James Russell Boulware and Madeline Davenport Boulware. She was a member of Suttons United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher. Survivors include: a son, James Robert "Bob" Blakeley, Sr., of Shelby, North Carolina; a daughter, Carolyn B. Cantley of Andrews; nine grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

WILLIAM SMALL, JR. -- William James (W.J.) Small, Jr., 82, died Fri., Jan. 10, 2003, in a Florence hospital. Funeral services were held Sun., Jan. 12, 2003, at Kingstree United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at Kingstree Memorial Gardens. Mr. Small was born in Salters, a son of Jenny Watson Chandler Small and William James Small, Sr. He was a graduate of Kingstree High School and was retired as Williamsburg Veterans' Service Officer after serving 15 years. He worked for Santee Oil Co. for 26 years. Mr. Small was a member of Kingstree United Methodist Church and the Wallace Connor Sunday School Class and was secretary of the Sunday School for 30 years. He was Past Master of Masonic Lodge #46, a York Rite and Shriner, and a member of American Legion Post #8, Eastern Star #137 and the VFW, having served on numerous committees and civic organizations. Mr. Small served in the Navy during World War II on the USS New York. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Williamsburg Funeral Home. Survivors are: his wife, Mildred McCutchen Small; three daughters, Mildred Ann S. Freeman of Niceville, Florida; Jane S. Griffith of St. Matthews; and Nancy S. McClary of Kingstree; three sisters, Janie S. David and Mary S. Graham of Kingstree; and Leila McPherson of Moncks Corner; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Kingstree United Methodist Church or to a charity of one's choice.

JOHN MOUZON -- Funeral services for John Edward Mouzon, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Brockington and the Rev. Ronnie Scott, were held Wed., Jan. 1, 2003, at Marion Baptist Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Bethel United Methodist Church Cemetery in Kingstree. Mr. Mouzon died Dec. 26, 2002. He was born in Eustin, Florida, on March 1, 1949, to Doc Mouzon and the late Anna S. Mouzon. He attended public school in Rochester, New York and graduated from Madison High School. Mr. Mouzon was employed by US Group Construction Co-op, where he worked as a form setter He also helped start the first softball team in Hell's-Half Acre. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Trudy Mouzon of Kingstree; four sons, Ronnie Scott of Columbia; DeMario Mouzon of Myrtle Beach; Curtis Mouzon and Jamie Mouzon, both of the home; two daughters, Tuwain Mouzon of the home; and Mrs. Johnette Divers of Atlanta, Georgia; four brothers, Doc Mouzon, Robert Mouzon, George Mouzon, all of Kingstree; and Tommy Mouzon of Fayetteville, North Carolina; four sisters, the Rev. Anna Gamble and Mrs. Laura Mack, both of Kingstree; Mary R. Vernon of Rochester, New York; and Josephine Mouzon of Salters; his grandmother, Mrs. Lela Scott of Rochester, New York; and ten grandchildren.

LESTER DUKES -- Funeral services for Lester Dukes, conducted by the Rev. Frank V. James, will be held Sat., Jan. 18, 2003, at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. Dukes, 80, a retired butcher with Williamsburg Meat Packing and a farmer, died Fri., Jan. 10, 2003, at Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. He was born Jan. 18, 1922, in Kingstree, a son of the late Dave "Lang" Dukes and Easter Shaw Dukes. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the United Methodist Men. He was a member of Boggie Swamp Masonic Lodge No. 452. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Annie Bell McClary Dukes of the home; three sons, Otis Dukes, Nathaniel Dukes and Samuel Dukes, all of Rochester, New York; three daughters, Mrs. Lola Williamson and Mrs. Gwendolyn Anderson, both of Kingstree; and Dorothy Burroughs of Philadel-phia, Pennsylvania; one brother, Abraham Dukes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Richardson of Baltimore, Maryland; and Mrs. Mae Evelyn Griffin of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 26 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

LILLIE COOPER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Lillie Maude Cooper, widow of Anderson Cooper, were held Fri., Dec. 27, 2002, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Wilson Chapel First Baptist Church Cemetery in Kingstree. Mrs. Cooper died Fri., Dec. 20, 2002, at Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia. She was born on Nov. 13, 1916, in Folkston, Georgia, the daughter of the late James Henry and Julia Williams. She received her formal education in Folkston, Georgia. She was a homemaker. Survivors are: five daughters, Mrs. Marie C. Myers of Kingstree; Mrs. Louise Smith of Columbia; Mrs. Martha Burgess of Atlanta, Georgia; Mrs. Linda Darby and Mrs. Juliet Cooper-Brown, both of Columbia; one adopted daughter, Francena Epps Henryhand; three sons, Virdell Cooper of Hyattsville, Maryland; Earl Cooper of Columbia; and Howard Cooper of Lancaster; 26 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

MATILDA LEWIS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Matilda Lewis, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Herman Gibson, were held Sat., Dec. 28, 2002, at Ranzie Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial, directed Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Smith-Cooper Cemetery in Salters. Mrs. Lewis, widow of Robert Lewis, Sr., was born to the late Dave and Agnes Swinton on June 15, 1916, in Salters. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. Survivors are: two sisters, Jannie Bradley and Katie McCrea, both of Salters; one brother, David Swinton of Albion, Michigan; one step-brother, Joe McClary of Clearwater, Florida; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

SELMA ANDERSON -- Mrs. Selma Floyd Anderson, 95, widow of Johnnie S. Anderson, Sr., died Mon., Jan. 13, 2003, in a private residential care facility. Funeral services were held Wed., Jan. 15, 2003, in the Brockington Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Brockington Funeral Home, followed at Graham Cemetery. Mrs. Anderson was born in North Carolina, a daughter of the late Tom and Delia Ann Williams Floyd. She was a homemaker and a member of Cades Baptist Church. Survivors include: one daughter, Clara Ann Lamb of Lake City; one son, Johnnie Anderson, Jr., of Lake City; six grandchildren and five great-granddaughters. Memorials may be made to Cades Baptist Church, PO Box 69, Cades, South Carolina 29518.

SIMPSON PRICE, JR. -- Simpson Eugene Price, Jr., 84, died Mon., Jan. 13, 2003, at his home. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steven M. Todd and the Rev. Edward L. Mainous, were held Wed., Jan. 15, 2003, at Trinity United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by the Andrews Chapel of Mayer Funeral Home, followed in Andrews Memorial Cemetery. Mr. Price was born in Kingstree on Dec. 23, 1918, a son of the late Simpson Eugene Price, Sr., and Leila Coker Price. He was a retired rural mail carrier and a farmer. Mr. Price was also a former employee of Carolina Life Insurance Company and the former owner and operator of The Smoke Shop. Mr. Price was a member of American Legion Post #69 in Andrews, where he served as finance officer, adjutant and post officer. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and was past chairperson of missions and a former president of the United Methodist Men. Mr. Price was also a member of the Andrews Lionšs club and VFW Post #6444 in Georgetown. He was active in the community and surrounding areas. Mr. Price was predeceased by his first wife, Pauline "Polly" Price. Survivors, in addition to his wife, Ruby McLean Price, of Andrews, are, one son Charles Price of Fairmont, West Virginia; two daughters, Louise P. Gilbert and Barbara P. Morris, both of Andrews; a step-daughter, Mar-lane Becker of Jacksonville, North Carolina; eleven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren.

CARL McCRAY -- Funeral services for Carl McCray, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Corbin, were held Thurs., Jan. 16, 2003, at St. Mary A.M.E. Church in Salters. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mr. McCray, 67, died Sat., Jan. 11, 2003, at Williamsburg Regional Hospital. He was born Sept. 6, 1935, in Williamsburg County, the son of the late Loyd and Marthena McCray. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was formerly employed at Santee Wool Plant in Jamestown, where he worked as a card cleaner. He was a member of St. Mary A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Ila R. McCray of the home; two sons, Kenneth McCray and Carl McCray, Jr., both of Charleston; three step-sons, Rogers McCray of North Carolina; Rodney Branham of Myrtle Beach; and Kevin Loyal of Charleston; one daughterof, Mrs. Levada Nesmith of Trio; two step-daughters, Mrs. Donna Brown of Trio; and Mrs. Lydia Mouzon of Kingstree; three grandchildren reared as his own, Tiarra Loyal, Amber Loyal and Portia Loyall, all of Salters; four brothers, Harold McCray, Abraham McCrea and Lloyd McCrea, Jr., all of Salters; and Emerson McCrea of Clearwater, Florida; two sisters, Mrs. Ruth Hodge of Mullins; and Mrs. Racheal Mouzon of Salters; 22 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

GEORGE SMITH, SR. -- Funeral services for George Smith, Sr., conducted by the Rev. Donnie McBride, were held Sat., Jan. 18, 2003, at Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church in Lane. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Gordon Cemetery. Mr. Smith, 97, died Mon., Jan. 13, 2003, at Roper Hospital in Charleston. He was born May 15, 1908, in Lane, a son of the late Wash Smith and Virginia Smith. He was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was formerly employed with Seaboard Coastline - U.S. Railroad as a boxcar oiler and transportation communications International Union. He was a member of Lane Chapel A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Justine C. Smith of Charleston; seven sons, Antonio Smith of Washington, DC; Timothy Cato and Garrett Rose, both of Atlanta, Georgia; Keithen Cato, Stanley Cato and Bobby Cato, all of Charleston; and Michael Cato of Jacksonville, Florida; six daughters, Mrs. Thelma Dross, Mrs. Ruby Flowers, Mrs. Jaquelyn Smith, Mrs. Cynthia Ann Cato, all of Charles-ton; Mrs. Irma Lowmon of Columbia; and Mrs. Pricilla Cato of Jacksonville, Florida; two special grandchildren, Brittany Salley and Gernardo Cato, both of Charleston; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
