RUTHENA McCOWN -- Funeral services for Mrs. Ruthena Watson McCown, conducted by the Rev. William McNeil and the Rev. Boyd McDaniel, were held Thurs., June 26, 2003, at Hopewell A.M.E. Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. McCown, 53, died Sun., June 22, 2003, in Winston Salem, North Carolina. She was born June 6, 1950, in Georgetown, a daughter of the late Delma Watson, Sr., and Florie Cunningham Watson. She attended the public schools of Georgetown County. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State College earning a bachelorıs degree in computer programming. She was formerly employed by Southern New England Telephone in New Haven, Connecticut, Williamsburg and Georgetown Counties School Systems and National Wholesale. She was a member of Hopewell A.M.E. Church. Survivors are: her husband, Charles McCown of Lexington; one son, Chaz McCown of Lexington; one daughter, Misha TaShawn McCown of New Haven, Connecticut; four brothers, Glover Watson of New Haven, Connec-ticut; Levern Watson of Poughkeepsie, New York; Timothy Watson of Hemingway; and Terrance Watson of Warner Robins, Georgia; four sisters, Mrs. Willa Dean Coles of Georgetown; Mrs. Brenda Watson, Mrs. Lila Gause and Mrs. Loretta Graham, all of Hemingway; her mother-in-law, Lorine McCown of Hemingway; and six grandchildren.

THE REV. BENJAMIN COKLEY -- Funeral services for the Rev. Benjamin Cokley, conducted by the Rev. Sylvester Wallace and Bishop J. Bernard McCray, were held Mon., June 9, 2003, at Clauddie Henryhand Memorial Chapel in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Henryhand Funeral Home, followed at Jerusalem A.M.E. Churchyard Cemetery. The Rev. Cokley died Tues., June 10, 2003, at Orlando Regional Medical Center in Orlando, Florida. He was born Oct. 26, 1926, in Lane, a son of the late Melvin Cokley and Josephine McCutchen Cokley. The Rev. Cokley grew up in Williamsburg County, where he attended the public schools. He was in the United States Army. He later moved to Orlando, Florida, where he accepted his commission to preach the Gospel. Surviving is one sister, Mary Ella Wallace of Lane.

McKEIVER BROWN -- Funeral services for McKeiver Brown, conducted by the Rev. Obed Conyers, were held Wed., June 25, 2003, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Greeleyville. Burial, directed by Redmond-Richardson Funeral Home, followed at St. John Mis-sionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Brown, 81, died Sat., June 21, 2003, at the Roper-Berkeley Day Hospital in Moncks Corner. He was born March 7, 1922, in Williamsburg County, a son of the late Peter McKeiver Brown, Sr., and Annie Montgomery Brown. He received his formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of St. John Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir for many years. He served in the United States Army during World War II. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Rachel C. Brown of Greeleyville; four daughters, Mrs. Sheila Brown Williams and Joyce Brown, both of Greeleyville; Mrs. Gwendolyn Brown Dizzley Frasier of George-town; and Addie L. Brown of New York, New York; two sisters, Mrs. Carrie Whack and Mrs. Louise Montgomery, both of Charleston; one brother, Ben O. Brown of Greeleyville; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

JAMES HAYNES -- Funeral services for James Albert Haynes, conducted the Rev. Nathaniel A. Evans and Minister Eunice Haynes, were held Fri., June 27, 2003, at Faith United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Veterans Cemetery in Florence. Mr. Haynes, 57, died Fri., June 20, 2003, at his residence in Columbia. He was born Dec. 5, 1945, a son of the late Junior Haynes and Lurleen McFadden Haynes. He was educated in the public schools of Georgetown County. He was employed by Pinkerton Security Service, where he attained the rank of captain. He was formerly employed with Anderson Car Service and served in the United States Army for 21 1/2 years. He was a member of the Church of God and True Holiness in Georgetown. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Tressie Haynes; one daughter, Letrea L. Haynes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one son, James Darryl Haynes of Orangeburg; his step-mother-in-law, Mrs. Louisa Cooper of Kingstree; seven sisters, Mrs. Lizzie A. McFadden of Titusville, Florida; Mrs. Frances Barr, Mrs. Barbara Canty and Mrs. Sandra Pasley, all of Georgetown; Mrs. Christona Wells of Sumter; Minister Eunice Haynes of Waynesboro, Georgia; and Mrs. Sharon Foster of Columbia; three brothers, Louis Haynes of San Diego, California; Johnathan Haynes of Myrtle Beach; and Andrew Haynes; and two grandsons.

CORA SINGLETARY -- Funeral services for Mrs. Cora McFadden Hanna Singletary, conducted by the Rev. Jack Peterson, were held Thurs., June 26, 2003, at the New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Lake City. Burial, directed by Samuels and Richard-son Funeral Home, followed at Restlawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Singletary, 75, died Fri., June 20, 2003, at the Carolinas Hospital System-Florence. She was born June 25, 1927, in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late John McFadden, Sr., and Minnie Brown McFadden. She received her formal education in the public schools of Williamsburg and Florence Coun-ties. She was a member of New Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the gospel choir. Survivors are: three daughters, Mrs. Laura Fulmore and Patricia Singletary, both of Lake City; and Katie Rose Gibson of Hollywood, Florida; two grandchildren, she reared as her own, Kimberley Singletary of the home; and Tyrone Singletary of Lake City; one step-daughter, Sylvia Lee McCullough of Atlanta, Georgia; one step-son, Ellis "Busterz" Eaddy of Lake City; three sisters, Mattie McFadden, Mrs. Ella Mae Henry and Queen Ester McFadden, all of Lake City; ten additional grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

JENNIE McCLARY -- Jennie Lou Bradham McClary, 83, widow of James Theodore McClary, Sr., died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in a Charleston hospital. Funeral services were held Friday, June 27, 2003, in the Williamsburg Funeral Home Chapel. Burial, directed by Williamsburg Funeral Home, followed at McClary Cemetery. Mrs. McClary was born in Williamsburg County, a daughter of the late William Manly and Bessie Easler Bradham. She was a graduate of Kingstree High School and a member of Millwood United Methodist Church, where she had served as Superintendent of the Sunday school. Mrs. McClary was also a member of the Ladies Club and had taught bible school. Mrs. McClary was a member of the Millwood Community Development Club. Survivors are: her children, Sandra M. Patrick of James Island; Douglas McClary of Georgteown; Linda Youmans of Johns Island; Sharon Bateman of Mt. Pleasant; James Theodore McClary, Jr., of Bradenton, Florida; Frances McClary of Greeleyville; Michael G. McClary, John Marion McClary, Willie Bradham McClary and Brian Greggory McClary, all of Kingstree; Jennie Robin McClary of Surfside Beach; and Lisa M. Baylor of Blair, Nebraska; one sister, Sally B. Clark of Newport News, Virginia; 26 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to McClary Cemetery, Millwood Community House or they may be made to Millwood United Methodist Church.

GEORGE BENBOW -- Funeral services for George Benbow, conducted by the Rev. Steven Brown, were held Wed., July 2, 2003, at Emanuel Baptist Church in Manning. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Greenlawn Cemetery. Mr. Benbow, 56, died Fri., June 27, 2003, in Manning. He was born November 24, 1946, a son of Mrs. Marion Virginia Felder Benbow and the late Rev. John Benbow. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County and Williamsburg Technical College. Mr. Benbow was formerly employed as an engineer with Albany International. Mr. Benbow was a former member and Deacon of Laurel Swamp Baptist Church and Antioch Baptist Church. He was also a member of Woodstock Masonic Lodge #455, Williamsburg Chapter Order of Eastern Star # 341. Mr. Benbow also served in the Vietnam War. George Benbow also served as the first African-American Councilman of Lane Town Council and became Mayor Pro-Tem of Lane. He was an auxillary fireman of Lane. Survivors, in addition to his mother of Lane, are: his wife, Mrs. Nora Lane Benbow of Manning; two daughters, Mrs. Georgetta Cash of Lane; and Mrs. Melinda Benbow Deas of North Charleston; an adopted daughter, Mrs. Sylvestene McBride of Salters; four brothers, John Benbow, Jr., of Lane; Boston Benbow of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; Henry Benbow of Lane; and Wilbur Benbow of Myrtle Beach; three sisters, Mrs. Daisy Burgess of Lane; Mrs. Johnnie Mae Hudson of Long Island, New York; and Mrs. Myrtle Bennett of Troy, New York; and four grandchildren.

PEARLEASE OWENS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Pearlease Calhoun Owens, conducted by Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper, were held Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at Believers Holiness Convention Center in Coward. Burial, directed by Dimery and Rogers Funeral Home, followed at Old Wilson Chapel First Baptist Faith Cemetery. Mrs. Owens, 72, died Thursday, June 26, 2003, at McLeod Regional Medical Center. She was born November. 8, 1930, a daughter of the late Abraham Calhoun and Isabella Dukes Calhoun. Mrs. Owens was educated in the public schools of Williamsburg County. She was a member of Trinity Holiness Church, where she served as evangelist, usher, choir member and also as bible school teacher. Survivors are: two sons, James Owens of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Perry Mason Owens of Kingstree; five daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Jean Grant of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Mrs. Henrietta Scott of Salters; Mrs. Frances Isabella Pendergrass of Kingstree; Mrs. Sherry Holt of Bridgeport, Connecticut; and Mrs. Nina Jean Scott of Columbia; two brothers, Abraham Calhoun of Deerfield Beach, Florida; and Abraham Dukes of Philadelphia, Pennsyl-vania; three sisters, Mrs. Fannie Wallace of Bridgeport, Connec-ticut; Mrs. Mary Richards of Baltimore, Maryland; and Mrs. Evelyn of Philadelphia, Pennsyl-vania. Mrs. Owens had 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

SULLAR THOMAS -- Funeral services for Mrs. Sullar Shaw Thomas, conducted by the Rev. Frank V. James and Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper, were held Friday, June 27, 2003, at St. Paul United Methodist church In Kingstree. Burial, directed by Pressleyıs Funeral Home, followed at the churchyard cemetery. Mrs. Thomas, a daughter of the Rev. Prince Shaw and the late Ruby McFadden Shaw, was born May 27, 1952, in Bronx, New York. She died Monday, June 23, 2003, as a result of an automobile accident. Mrs. Thomas graduated from Evander Childs High School in Bronx, New York and also attended Williamsburg Technical College. She was a member of Russell Institutional C.M.E. Church, where she sang in the Youth Choir, while residing in New York. Upon moving to Kingstree in 1990, Mrs. Thomas became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was employed by Helig Myers Furniture Store and various hotels in Myrtle Beach. Survivors, in addition to her father of Kingstree, are: her husband, Calvin Thomas, Sr., of Bronx, New York; her children, Calvin Thomas, Jr., of North Carolina; Lenard Thomas and Avia Shaw, both of Kingstree; one sister, Linda Henry of Durham, North Carolina; and two brothers, Prince K. Shaw, Jr., of Franklin, Virginia; and Rodney J. Shaw of Louisville, Kentucky.

JAMES MATTHEWS -- Funeral services for James Edward Matthews, conducted by Elder Dr. Linwood Cooper and Elder William Outing, were held Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Trinity Believers Holiness Church in Kingstree. Burial, directed by Pressley's Funeral Home, followed at St. John Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Matthews, a son of Martha Burgess Matthews and the late John Edward Matthews, was born Feb. 19, 1972, in Kingstree. He died Tues., June 24, 2003, in Ft. Lauderdale, in an automobile accident. He attended the public schools of Williamsburg County. He was a member of the House of God Church Keith Dominion in Kingstree. His occupation included a career in brick masonry. Survivors, in addition to his mother, are: his wife, Evelyn Matthews; three sisters, Joe Ann Matthews of Columbia; Ethel Lee Matthews and Martha Ann, both of Kingstree; and his grandfather Tommy Burgess.
